118: Mirror match at Victoria Park

The September sun bathed the turf of Victoria Park, illuminating a dazzling emerald green.

The stands surrounding the stadium were already packed, buzzing with noise. This was no ordinary League One match, but a top-of-the-table clash that the media had dubbed a "tactical master showdown."

Lin Feng stood by the floor-to-ceiling window of the VIP box, his gaze sweeping across the pitch. He could feel the special significance of today's game.

Hartlepool United, a team newly promoted to League One, was undefeated in five rounds and sat at the top of the League.

Their opponent, Swansea City, was also known for its technical football, coached by Spanish manager Roberto Martínez, and hailed as "the Barcelona of Wales."

Two teams, two similar yet different football philosophies, were about to engage in a true "mirror match" on this green field.

"Boss, you seem very calm." Old John walked up to Lin Feng, a hint of nervousness in his voice.

Lin Feng smiled slightly. "Why be nervous? This is just a normal League match."

"Normal?" Old John shook his head. "All of League One's eyes are focused here.

Martínez even said in yesterday's press conference that he had found a way to limit us."

Lin Feng turned and looked at the Sky Sports commentary team already in position by the pitch.

"Let them see what real football is."

Inside the stadium, commentator Martin Tyler was speaking eloquently into the camera.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the highlight match of the fifth round of this season's League One!

Hartlepool United against Swansea City! This might be the most technically demanding match in League One this season!

Lin Feng's 'Geometric Warfare' versus Martínez's 'tiki-taka'! This is absolutely a clash of titans!"

Co-commentator Gary Black added: "Let's look at the starting lineups. The away team, Swansea City, has lined up in a 4-3-3 formation.

The goalkeeper is Dorus de Vries; the defense includes future Premier League title-winning captain Ashley Williams;

The midfield core is Spanish veteran Ferrie Bodde, and the frontline features Jason Scotland and Paul Anderson."

"The home team, Hartlepool United, continues with their main 4-3-3. Goalkeeper Schmeichel; defense Walker, Shawcross, Nelson, Robson; midfield Henderson, Sigurdsson, Tinkler; frontline Maloney, Vardy, Snodgrass. A mirror formation clash, it all depends on whose execution is stronger!"

In the player tunnel, both teams were ready to go.

Jamie Vardy stretched his shoulders, his eyes gleaming with excitement.

Since being promoted to League One, his goal-scoring momentum had not diminished, having already scored 4 goals, temporarily ranking second in the top scorer list.

"How do you feel, Jamie?" Gylfi Sigurðsson walked up to him and asked softly.

Vardy grinned. "Like I'm going to a feast.

I heard their center-back Ashley Williams is very fast, I can't wait to see how fast he really is."

Sigurdsson smiled and shook his head. Vardy was always like this; the stronger the opponent, the more it ignited his fighting spirit.

Captain Michael Nelson walked to the front of the line, looking around at each of his teammates.

"Lads, today is not just a top-of-the-table clash. This is our chance to prove ourselves to all of League One. To prove that we are not here by luck, but by strength!"

The players responded in unison, their morale high.

As the referee's whistle blew, the match officially began.

Both teams immediately plunged into an intense midfield battle.

Both sides tried to control the pace of the game through passing and possession, with the ball quickly moving back and forth in the midfield area, creating an exciting spectacle.

Swansea City certainly lived up to their reputation; their passing and receiving were very fluid,

Spanish midfielder Ferrie Bodde commanded the play with composure, at one point matching Hartlepool United in possession.

"It seems Martínez really did his homework," Lin Feng murmured softly in the box.

Swansea City's tactics were highly targeted; they successfully restricted Hartlepool United's midfield passing lanes through high pressing and zonal defense. Especially the marking of Gylfi Sigurðsson, which was almost a "two-on-one" dedicated defense.

On the field, Jordan Henderson tried to organize an attack, but his pass was intercepted by Swansea City's midfielder.

"They've studied us," Henderson said to Sigurdsson as he ran back to his defensive position.

The Icelander nodded, sweat already beading on his forehead. "They know our passing routes and habitual runs."

But Lin Feng's "variable" soon began to take effect. Hartlepool United, while possessing technical skill, also had absolute speed that Swansea City lacked.

In the 15th minute, Kyle Walker suddenly accelerated down the right wing, shaking off Swansea City's left-back, and sent in a cross from the byline.

Unfortunately, Vardy's timing for the shot in the box was slightly off, and the ball was cleared for a corner by Ashley Williams.

"Good play!" Old John applauded from the sidelines. "Keep this up, their left-side defense has a weakness!"

In the 30th minute, Swansea City's midfield pass was anticipated and intercepted by Henderson, and Hartlepool United instantly switched from possession to a lightning-fast counterattack!

Henderson sent a long pass to Vardy, who used his speed to attack the opposing defense,

drawing defenders before passing the ball to Walker on the right. Walker and Snodgrass again combined, sending in a cross from the byline.

In the box, Vardy's shot was crucially cleared by Ashley Williams.

"Too bad!" Martin Tyler exclaimed in the commentary box. "Hartlepool United's counterattack speed is too fast! This is their weapon!"

On the sidelines, Roberto Martínez watched the situation on the field expressionlessly. Although his team had more possession, they didn't create many real threats.

In the first half, both teams had chances, but neither could break the deadlock, and the score remained nil-nil at halftime.

"Martínez's team has certainly given us the biggest trouble since the start of the season," Old John said to the players as he entered the locker room.

The players looked serious. This was the first time this season they had failed to score in the first half.

Lin Feng's gaze swept across the field, finally settling on Sigurdsson, who was being tightly marked by the opposition.

On the system panel, Sigurdsson's "Long Shot" and "Creativity" values were faintly glowing. It was time.

He took out his phone and sent a message to Old John: "Second half, unleash Gylfi.

Let him make free runs forward, attacking the area between their defensive midfielder and center-back. Tell him I allow him to shoot wildly; I need his unreasonableness."

Old John frowned slightly when he saw the message. This was somewhat different from the system football they usually emphasized.

Vardy whistled, breaking the silence: "Boss, did I hear that right? Let the Icelander fire at will?" His tone was full of disbelief.

In front of the tactics board, Old John pointed to the midfield area.

"Second half, we need to change some things. Gylfi, you are no longer confined to midfield organization; I need you to push forward more, attacking the area between their defensive midfielder and center-back."

Sigurdsson was a bit surprised. "But that will disrupt our passing system."

Old John nodded. "That's right, but sometimes we need something outside the system. The boss said he allows you to shoot wildly; he needs your unreasonableness."

Vardy was about to whistle again but was stopped by a look from a teammate beside him.

He looked at Sigurdsson and saw that the Icelander's eyes were also wide, clearly not expecting Lin Feng to give him "free-fire authority."

Sigurdsson subconsciously clenched his fists, his knuckles making a slight sound. He looked up, his eyes shining with surprising intensity: "Leave it to me."

The second half began, and Hartlepool United's tactical change immediately became apparent.

Sigurdsson was no longer confined to midfield organization but frequently pushed forward, his range of activity noticeably expanding.

Swansea City clearly did not anticipate this change. Their defensive system began to loosen.

In the 55th minute, Sigurdsson received a pass from Henderson in the attacking third, and instead of passing, he took a direct long shot!

A long shot! The ball flew into the top corner! De Vries had no reaction!

"Goal! An incredible long shot! Gylfi Sigurðsson!" Martin Tyler shouted excitedly.

"This is the special privilege Lin Feng gave him! Sigurdsson did not betray that trust, and a long shot pierced Swansea's goal!"

Victoria Park erupted. Fans chanted Sigurdsson's name.

Sigurdsson ran to the sideline, pointing towards the dugout, saluting Lin Feng's tactical adjustment.

Martínez on the sidelines looked grim. He hadn't expected the opponent to make such a major tactical adjustment in the second half.

"They sacrificed some possession for more direct attacking," Martínez said to his assistant coach. "We need to strengthen our midfield defense."

But before Swansea City could complete their adjustments, Hartlepool United's second goal arrived.

In the 63rd minute, Sigurdsson again picked up the ball in the attacking third. This time, he didn't shoot, but after a feint, delivered a brilliant through ball.

Vardy, like an arrow from a bow, burst into the box, with Ashley Williams close behind.

The two engaged in a physical battle at high speed. Vardy, with his incredible explosiveness, gained a slight lead and calmly slotted the ball into the far corner from 8 yards out!

"Another goal! Jamie Vardy! Hartlepool United leads 2-0!" Martin Tyler's voice almost changed pitch.

"This is what Lin Feng called the 'variable'! Sigurdsson's creativity and Vardy's speed, Swansea City simply cannot predict or defend!"

Lin Feng smiled slightly in the box. His tactical adjustments had an immediate effect.

After "unleashing" Sigurdsson, the team's attack became even more unpredictable.

The Icelander's creativity and long-shot threat forced Swansea City's defense to push forward, which in turn created more space for Vardy's speed.

On the field, Swansea City began to get restless. Their passing and possession system was disrupted, forcing them to take risks and push forward.

In the 75th minute, Swansea City earned a free-kick opportunity in the attacking third.

Ferrie Bodde took it, and the ball accurately found the center-back in the box, who headed it towards goal, but Schmeichel made a flying save!

"A brilliant save! Kasper Schmeichel!" the commentator exclaimed. "This young Dane is keeping another clean sheet today!"

In the last ten minutes of the match, Swansea City threw everything forward, with the entire team pushing for an attack.

But Hartlepool United's defense was very resilient, and Schmeichel commanded with composure, defusing several dangerous situations.

The final whistle blew, and Hartlepool United defeated Swansea City 2-0 at home, continuing to lead the League One table!

"A perfect victory!" Martin Tyler concluded. "Lin Feng once again proved his tactical wisdom.

When possession-based football encounters obstacles, he knows how to unleash players' individual abilities, create 'variables,' and break the balance!"

At the post-match press conference, Old John appeared particularly confident when facing media questions.

"Today's victory proved that we are not just a possession-based team; we also have the ability to win games through individual skill and direct football."

A reporter asked: "Sigurdsson's role clearly changed in the second half. Was this planned before the match?"

Old John smiled slightly. "Football matches are always full of variables. A good coaching team needs to
