167: Goodison Park's meat grinder (Part 1)

The lights of Goodison Park illuminated the night sky.

Forty thousand Everton fans sang their team anthem in unison, their voices surging like a tide towards the center of the pitch. They waved blue scarves, their eyes burning with hostility towards this “nouveau riche” team.

Banners in the stands were particularly glaring: “Money can’t buy glory” and “League One go home”.

In the Sky Sports broadcast booth, Martin Tyler adjusted his headset.

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the highly anticipated fourth-round League Cup match!”

His voice reached the world through the television.

“A much-anticipated showdown is about to begin!”

“Hartlepool United, who just announced a sky-high sponsorship deal, are challenging Premier League powerhouse Everton away from home!”

His partner, Andy Gray, took over.

“This is not just a game; it’s a clash between a new force and tradition.”

“An 80 million pound naming rights deal has shocked the entire football world, but Everton will not be intimidated by these numbers.”

Martin Tyler flipped through the material in his hand.

“Let’s look at the starting lineups for both teams.”

“Home team Everton has fielded most of their main players, in a 4-4-1-1 formation.”

“The goalkeeper is United States national goalkeeper Tim Howard. In defense, Joseph Yobo and Joleon Lescott anchor the center, with Tony Hibbert and Leighton Baines as the two full-backs.”

Andy Gray added: “The midfield is anchored by captain Phil Neville and Lee Carsley, with Steven Pienaar and Tim Cahill on the wings. The attacking midfielder is Spanish core Mikel Arteta, and the lone striker is Nigerian target man Victor Anichebe.”

“This is a balanced lineup, and Moyes clearly takes this match very seriously.”

The camera cut to the away team’s bench.

Hartlepool United players were doing their final warm-up.

“The away team, Hartlepool United, is also playing with their full main squad, in a 4-3-3 formation.”

Martin Tyler continued to introduce them.

“Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, and the defense from right to left are Kyle Walker, Ryan Shawcross, Sam Nelson, Matty Robson.”

“The midfield trio consists of Jordan Henderson, Gylfi Sigurðsson, and Stuart Tinkler.”

“The attacking trident is made up of Shaun Maloney, Jamie Vardy, and Robert Snodgrass.”

Andy Gray nodded.

“They will challenge the authority of the Premier League in their most accustomed way.”

“This team has achieved twelve consecutive victories in League One and is in excellent form.”

Referee Mark Clattenburg blew the opening whistle.

The match officially began.

Everton kicked off first.

Anichebe passed the ball back to Arteta, and the Spaniard immediately distributed it to the right wing.

Pienaar received the ball without any hesitation and immediately pushed forward.

Robson moved up to intercept, but Pienaar had already passed the ball to the center.

Neville received the ball and immediately passed it to Cahill.

The Australian didn’t even look up, sending a long pass to Anichebe in the front.

This series of passes took less than ten seconds, the pace was breathtakingly fast.

Shawcross jumped to contest, but Anichebe’s height advantage was clear.

The Nigerian striker headed the ball to Baines, who was overlapping on the left.

Hartlepool United’s defense immediately contracted, forming a compact defense.

Baines’ cross was headed clear by Nelson.

The ball fell to midfield, and Sigurdsson prepared to take possession.

But Cahill had already rushed forward, the Australian’s pressing was exceptionally fierce.

Sigurdsson managed to pass the ball to Henderson, but the pass lacked power.

Neville intercepted midway and immediately distributed the ball to Arteta.

The Spanish midfield maestro turned to evade Tinkler’s defense, then delivered a through ball.

Anichebe successfully beat the offside trap, creating a one-on-one opportunity!

Schmeichel decisively rushed out and gathered the ball at the edge of the penalty area.

He narrowly defused Everton’s first wave of attack.

Moyes on the sidelines clapped his hands vigorously, signaling his players to maintain this intensity of pressure.

Hartlepool United’s players were clearly somewhat unaccustomed to it.

This Premier League-level pressing intensity far exceeded their previous experience.

Whenever they had the ball, at least two Everton players would immediately swarm them.

Moreover, the opponent’s pressing was not just simple positioning, but an organized and premeditated collective action.

Schmeichel threw the ball out, finding Walker on the right.

The young full-back had just controlled the ball when Hibbert closed in.

Walker wanted to cut inside, but Carsley had already blocked the route.

Helpless, he could only pass the ball back to Shawcross.

The center-back immediately felt the pressure after receiving the ball.

Anichebe dropped back from the front to press him.

Shawcross quickly passed the ball to Nelson.

But this pass was a bit rushed, and the power was a bit too much.

Nelson barely controlled the ball when Arteta had already arrived in front of him.

The Spaniard’s eyes gleamed with a predator’s light.

In a panic, Nelson hoofed the ball towards the front, but it completely lacked accuracy.

The ball was easily headed back to goalkeeper Howard by Lescott.

The American goalkeeper did not rush to clear the ball after taking possession, but deliberately delayed time, allowing his teammates to reorganize their formation.

This was a detail handled only by an experienced veteran.

Lin Feng sat in the away team’s box, his expression serious but not flustered.

He crossed his hands on the table, his eyes fixed on the situation on the field.

Although they were on the back foot in the opening stages, the players had not completely fallen apart.

They were still trying to execute the “triangle passing” tactic, even if they weren’t doing it smoothly enough.

More importantly, no one chose to blindly hoof the ball forward.

This indicated that the players were still maintaining calm heads.

Howard’s throw found Neville in midfield.

The English veteran immediately surveyed the situation up front after receiving the ball.

Arteta was running to the right, signaling for the ball.

Neville understood, delivering a precise short pass to the Spaniard.

As Arteta received the ball, Henderson had already closed in.

But the Spanish midfielder’s technique was simply too good; a simple drag-back and turn allowed him to escape the defense.

Immediately, he delivered a through ball with extreme penetration.

The ball accurately found Pienaar, who was overlapping on the right.

The Spanish winger shook off Robson’s defense and burst into the penalty area.

Facing the onrushing Schmeichel, Pienaar opted for a shot to the far corner.

But the young Danish goalkeeper reacted swiftly, blocking the ball out for a corner with his toes.

Goodison Park erupted in groans of disappointment.

Everton earned a corner kick.

Arteta walked towards the corner flag, his face devoid of any expression.

The technical maestro was contemplating the best tactical option.

Inside the penalty area, Anichebe and Cahill had already occupied advantageous positions.

Two strikers with excellent aerial ability put immense pressure on Hartlepool United’s defense.

Shawcross marked Anichebe tightly, while Nelson was responsible for Cahill.

Walker and Robson also returned to the penalty area to assist in defense.

Arteta took a run-up and struck the ball into the penalty area with his right foot.

The ball arced, heading straight for the far post.

Cahill leaped high, overpowering Nelson to head the ball towards goal.

But the angle was too central, and Schmeichel easily gathered the ball.

The Australian shook his head in frustration.

It was a good opportunity, but he couldn’t convert it.

The match continued.

Everton’s high press remained fierce; their players were like a pack of hounds, tirelessly chasing the ball in the attacking third.

The scene had completely turned into a “meat grinder.”

Every challenge was exceptionally intense, every pass full of risk.

In the 15th minute, Robson received a pass from Schmeichel in the backfield.

The young left-back wanted to pass the ball to Sigurdsson, but the passing lane was read by Pienaar.

The Spanish winger intercepted the ball and immediately distributed it to Arteta in the center.

The Spanish midfield maestro, without any hesitation, immediately delivered a through ball.

Anichebe successfully beat the offside trap, creating a one-on-one!

The Nigerian striker, facing the onrushing Schmeichel, opted for a shot to the near post.

But the Danish goalkeeper’s save was as if divinely aided, blocking the ball out with his body.

The ball struck the post and rebounded, then was cleared with a powerful kick by the arriving Shawcross.

It sent a cold sweat down the away team’s spine.

Lin Feng frowned slightly in the box.

Robson’s mistake almost led to a goal.

But he didn’t immediately send a message to criticize; instead, he continued to observe the players’ reactions.
