179: A "small test" of the FA Cup debut

The turf at Victoria Park gleamed emerald green under the afternoon sun, and the air was filled with the faint scent of fresh grass.

Fans had gathered early in the stands, waving blue and white scarves and humming familiar team songs.

Lin Feng stood in the executive box, looking down at the entire stadium through the glass window. He was quite excited about today's rotated lineup; these players, who usually had few opportunities to start, finally had a stage to prove themselves.

"Boss, the players are all ready," Richard Arnold said, pushing open the door, holding the latest player status report.

Lin Feng took the document and quickly scanned the data. The rotated players' excitement levels were generally high, and this eagerness to prove themselves often inspired extraordinary performances.

In the player tunnel, both teams were lining up to enter. Although most of Hartlepool United's players were substitutes, the confident aura they exuded was no less than that of the starting lineup.

Mansfield Town's players, on the other hand, seemed a bit nervous. They knew they were facing the League One leaders, and even if the opponent fielded a rotated lineup, the strength gap was still obvious.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the first round of the FA Cup!" The commentator's voice echoed through the stadium via the loudspeakers. "League One leaders Hartlepool United are hosting League Two team Mansfield Town. Hartlepool United has made extensive rotations today; let's see if they can advance smoothly."

Lin Feng's gaze swept across the starting lineup, and he nodded silently. Goalkeeper Carson was experienced, the defensive combination of Simpson and Smalling was solid and reliable, and the midfield pairing of Bridcutt and Tinkler, one old and one young, was well-matched.

Upfront, Maloney had been in good form recently, Kevin Kyle's height advantage was a threat in set pieces, and Snodgrass's technique and awareness were both excellent.

On the bench, core players like Vardy and Sigurdsson sat quietly, showing no dissatisfaction. After such a long period of integration, the team had developed a good rotation culture.

The referee's whistle blew, and the match officially began.

Hartlepool United immediately showed strong control, with quick passing rhythms and active runs. Mansfield Town adopted a clear defensive stance, trying to restrict the opponent's offense through compact defense.

In the 8th minute, Bridcutt got the ball in midfield. Faced with two defenders, he calmly passed it to Snodgrass on the right wing. The Scotland winger, after receiving the ball, did not choose to cross from the byline but cut inside to the edge of the box, unleashing a low shot that the goalkeeper parried for a corner.

After the corner kick, Smalling headed the ball at the far post, but it grazed the crossbar and flew out. The away fans breathed a sigh of relief, while the home fans let out a sigh of regret.

Lin Feng observed the situation on the field quietly from the executive box. He was satisfied with the performance of the rotated players; they were playing entirely according to the team's tactical system, with excellent passing, control, and pressing.

In the 18th minute, Maloney actively pressed in the frontfield, successfully intercepting a pass from an opposing defender. He didn't try to go for glory himself but quickly passed the ball to the surging Ince. The young winger dribbled into the left side of the box and, facing the charging goalkeeper, opted for a chip shot, but unfortunately, it was a little too powerful and went over the crossbar.

Mansfield Town's coach constantly waved his arms on the sidelines, trying to encourage his players to be more proactive in attack. But against Hartlepool United's tight defensive system, they struggled to create any real threats.

In the 25th minute, the opportunity finally arrived.

Tinkler received a throw-in from Carson near the center circle. The experienced veteran didn't rush to release the ball but looked up to observe the runs in the frontfield.

Maloney understood, suddenly accelerating forward, shaking off the center-back marking him. Tinkler's pass was perfect, accurately finding Maloney's running path.

The Ireland forward was one-on-one with the goalkeeper when he received the ball. Facing the charging goalkeeper, he didn't hesitate, pushing the ball into the far corner, and it went into the net!

"Goal! Maloney opens the scoring for Hartlepool United!" The commentator's voice echoed excitedly throughout the stadium.

Victoria Park instantly erupted. Fans jumped up, waving their scarves, and the cheers were deafening. Maloney excitedly ran towards the corner flag, and his teammates gathered around to celebrate the brilliant goal.

Lin Feng clapped softly in the executive box, a satisfied smile on his face. This goal perfectly demonstrated the team's tactical prowess, initiated from the back, organized in midfield, and finished in the frontfield, with every link executed flawlessly.

After taking the lead, Hartlepool United did not relax their vigilance. They continued to maintain high-intensity pressing, giving their opponents no chance to breathe.

In the 32nd minute, Ince won a free-kick on the left wing. His cross was of high quality, and Kevin Kyle, in the box, leaped high to head the ball, but it went just wide of the post.

In the 38th minute, Bridcutt's long-range shot caused the goalkeeper to fumble, and Snodgrass's follow-up shot was cleared off the line by a defender.

At halftime, Hartlepool United led 1-0. Although it was only a one-goal advantage, the absolute control of the game made everyone believe that they would further extend their lead in the second half.

During halftime, Lin Feng gave no special instructions. He believed that this lineup had enough strength to win the battle, and too much interference might affect the players' performance.

In the locker room, Old John briefly summarized the first half's performance, emphasizing a few details that needed attention. The players were relaxed and confident about the second half.

After the second half began, Hartlepool United continued to control the game. Mansfield Town tried to strengthen their attack, but the difference in their strength made these efforts futile.

In the 58th minute, Hartlepool United won a corner kick. Ince's corner kick had a good arc, and the ball accurately found Kevin Kyle at the far post.

The tall striker had an absolute advantage in the air, and his header powerfully struck the goal. Although the goalkeeper made a save, the ball's power was too great, and it still found the back of the net.

2-0! Kevin Kyle extended the team's lead with a textbook header.

Kyle was exceptionally excited after the goal; it was his first official goal of the season. Teammates gathered around him to celebrate, and players on the bench also stood up and applauded.

Lin Feng nodded in the executive box; Kyle's goal came at just the right time. A two-goal lead essentially secured the victory, and he could now consider giving more young players a chance.

In the 72nd minute, Lin Feng made a substitution. He replaced Maloney with the young Baker, giving the excellent striker some applause.

Baker seemed a bit nervous after coming on but quickly settled into the rhythm of the game. He was very active in the frontfield, creating a lot of space for his teammates.

In the 86th minute, the match saw its final climax.

Ince received a pass from Bridcutt on the left wing. Faced with the pressing defender, he chose to cut inside to the edge of the box. Seeing a good shooting angle, Ince decisively shot, a powerful long-range effort that flew directly into the top right corner of the goal.

Although the goalkeeper made a save, the ball's angle was too tricky, and it ultimately pierced the net.

3-0! Ince's long-range shot put a perfect end to the match.

The young winger excitedly ran towards the stands, saluting the fans who supported him. This goal not only sealed the victory but also showcased his excellent shooting technique.

The final whistle blew, and Hartlepool United comfortably defeated Mansfield Town 3-0, successfully advancing to the second round of the FA Cup.

The players celebrated the victory on the field. Although their opponents were not strong, winning in such a comfortable manner still left them satisfied.

Lin Feng walked out of the executive box and waited for the players at the entrance to the player tunnel. Seeing their boss appear, the players' celebration became even more enthusiastic.

"Well done, lads," Lin Feng said, patting each player on the shoulder. "You proved your strength."

When Maloney walked over, his face still showed the excitement from his goal: "Boss, thank you for giving me this opportunity."

"Opportunities are earned," Lin Feng replied with a smile. "Keep up this form, and you'll get more opportunities."

At the press conference, media reporters showed great interest in Hartlepool United's rotation strategy.

"Mr. Lin, how did today's rotated lineup perform?" a reporter asked.

"I am very satisfied with the players' performance," Lin Feng's answer was concise and clear. "This proves that we have enough squad depth to cope with multi-front competition."

"What are your expectations for the FA Cup?" another reporter pressed.

Lin Feng pondered for a moment: "The FA Cup is a great competition, and we will give it our all. Every round is a new challenge, and we will be fully prepared."

After the press conference, Lin Feng returned to his office to deal with other matters. Today's victory made him even more confident about the team's future.

On the computer screen, major media outlets had already started reporting on the match. The Guardian's headline was "Hartlepool United's Rotated Lineup Advances with Ease," while The Times described the victory as "A Perfect Display of Squad Depth."

What impressed Lin Feng the most was The Daily Mail's comment: "For Hartlepool United, it seems they can use two completely different lineups to simultaneously dominate League One and domestic cup competitions. This terrifying squad depth is reminiscent of Manchester United and Arsenal in their prime."

Such praise made Lin Feng feel gratified. After more than a season of building, the club finally had real competitiveness.

His phone rang; it was Sophie Green.

"Congratulations on your easy advancement," Sophie's voice was joyful. "Today's rotation strategy was very successful."

"Thank you. The players' performance was indeed satisfying," Lin Feng leaned back in his chair. "Were you at the stadium today?"

"Of course, I wouldn't miss any match," Sophie replied with a smile. "Maloney's goal was brilliant, and Tinkler's pass was also spot on."

They chatted for a few minutes, mainly about the tactical details of today's match. Sophie's professionalism allowed her to accurately capture key information from the game.

After hanging up, Lin Feng continued to check other reports. On social media, fans highly praised today's performance.

One retweet from the official Twitter account had a particularly high share count: "Hartlepool United has proven with action that they not only have an excellent starting lineup, but their substitute players are also very strong. This squad depth is an important guarantee for challenging higher Leagues."

Lin Feng closed his computer, preparing to leave the office. Tomorrow, the team would continue to prepare for the League, and that match, which could make history, was waiting for them.

As he walked out of the office building, night had already fallen. Victoria Park in the distance looked particularly magnificent under the lights.

Just then, the stadium's big screen suddenly lit up, displaying a prominent line of text: "Congratulations to the team on 13 consecutive League wins! Next match, let us witness together the birth of a new record!"

This sudden display made Lin Feng stop. He knew it was an arrangement by the club staff, intended to build momentum for the upcoming record-breaking match.

The fans gathered around the stadium erupted in deafening cheers after seeing the text. They waved their scarves and loudly chanted the team's name.

"Hartlepool! Hartlepool!"

"Fourteen consecutive wins! Fourteen consecutive wins!"

This fervent atmosphere infected Lin Feng. He could feel the entire city's anticipation and support for the team, and this power would become the driving force for the team's progress.

Back home, Lin Feng opened the system interface to check player statuses. The rotated players who played today all had high morale, and this victory significantly boosted their confidence.

"[Task Completed: FA Cup First Round Victory]"

"[Reward: System Energy +50, Player Loyalty +5]"

The system's prompt made Lin Feng nod with satisfaction. Although these rewards were not lavish, they accumulated over time and were very helpful for the club's long-term development.

He began to plan the upcoming training schedule. With the record-breaking match imminent, he had to ensure that the main players maintained their best condition. At the same time, he also needed to continue giving opportunities to rotated players to maintain the vitality of the entire team.

Late at night, Lin Feng stood by the window, looking into the distance. The small town of Hartlepool had been revitalized by football, and this change made him proud.

From a team on the verge of relegation to the current League leaders, this transformation was nothing short of a miracle. But Lin Feng knew this was just the beginning. The real challenges were yet to come, and the European stage was their ultimate goal.

The FA Cup victory was just a small milestone; greater glory awaited them ahead.
