152: The Dignity of Relegated Teams (Part 2)

Colchester United, through quick wing play, saw Yates cross from the byline.

The tall center-forward Pratt, outmuscling Nelson in the box, headed the ball towards goal.

But the angle was too central, and Schmeichel easily collected it.

Hartlepool United immediately launched a counter-attack.

Schmeichel threw the ball to right-back Walker.

Walker quickly advanced to midfield, then distributed the ball to Sigurdsson.

The Icelander did not rush to pass the ball, but instead observed the situation on the field.

He noticed Vardy was engaged in a positional battle with the opposing center-back Duggan.

However, Duggan's experience was clearly richer.

He not only used his body to block Vardy's running lines but was also constantly ready to make a tackle.

Sigurdsson ultimately chose a safe horizontal pass.

The ball arrived at Henderson's feet.

The Liverpool academy product midfielder immediately showcased his characteristics.

Strong physique, excellent passing, and that tireless running ability.

He withstood Izzet's close marking and passed the ball to left-winger Maloney.

Maloney attempted to break through on the wing using his speed advantage.

But Colchester United's right-back Buck was already prepared.

He did not rashly commit to a tackle, but patiently followed Maloney's movements.

When Maloney attempted to cut inside, Buck decisively made a sliding tackle.

The ball went out for a throw-in.

Hartlepool United won a throw-in.

Robson quickly took the throw, finding the onrushing Henderson.

But Izzet's defensive recovery was very timely.

He used his body to push Henderson aside, clearing the ball out for a goal kick.

This was a typical Championship-level defense.

Experienced, accurate in judgment, and resolute in execution.

The game began to become a stalemate.

Both sides engaged in a fierce tug-of-war in midfield.

Hartlepool United held the possession advantage but struggled to create substantial threats.

Although Colchester United had less possession, every one of their attacks was purposeful.

In the 28th minute, the match saw its first real climax.

Tinkler delivered a precisely guided long pass from midfield.

The ball bypassed Colchester United's defense, accurately finding Vardy.

Vardy's speed advantage was fully displayed at this moment.

He shook off Duggan, creating a one-on-one opportunity.

The Hartlepool fans in the stands instantly erupted.

But goalkeeper Gerken's reaction was equally superb.

He decisively chose to rush out, collecting the ball before Vardy could shoot.

This save earned thunderous applause from the home fans.

Gerken stood up and waved to the stands.

His face was filled with confidence.

Vardy shook his head, a little frustrated.

But he quickly adjusted his mindset.

Lin Feng's voice echoed in his mind: "Opportunities will always come; the key is to remain patient."

The match continued.

The contest between the two sides grew more intense.

Colchester United began to frequently use Pratt's height advantage to create threats.

In the 35th minute, they earned a corner kick.

Peters took the kick, lofting the ball to the near post.

Pratt outjumped Shawcross, heading the ball towards goal.

But the ball just grazed the post.

The home fans let out a sigh of regret.

Hartlepool United immediately organized a counter-attack.

Schmeichel kicked a long ball, finding Snodgrass in the attacking third.

The Scottish winger showcased his individual ability.

Continuous changes of direction and feints left the opposing left-back Heath struggling to cope.

But just as Snodgrass was about to cross, Duggan timely covered from the center.

He made a precise sliding tackle, clearing the ball out for a goal kick.

This was another textbook example of covering defense.

The value of experience was fully demonstrated at this moment.

In the final moments of the first half.

The most dangerous attack from either side came from Hartlepool United.

In the 42nd minute, Sigurdsson received the ball about thirty meters from the goal.

He observed the goalkeeper's position, then lifted his right foot.

A powerful long-range shot whistled towards the goal.

Gerken reacted incredibly fast, making a diving save.

His fingertips touched the ball, changing its trajectory.

The ball hit the crossbar and bounced out for a goal kick.

"That was close!" commentator Taylor couldn't help but exclaim.

"Sigurdsson's long-range shot almost went in!"

"Gerken's save was crucial!"

The Colchester fans in the stands erupted in a huge cheer.

They celebrated their goalkeeper's heroic save.

The referee checked his watch, then blew the whistle for the end of the first half.

0-0.

Both sides were level.

The players gradually walked towards the tunnel.

The Colchester United players had satisfied smiles on their faces.

They had successfully withstood the league leaders' first-half attacks.

More importantly, they had proven that they would not easily give in.

The Hartlepool United players appeared relatively calm.

Vardy and his teammates discussed the gains and losses of the first half.

Henderson was thinking about how to break the deadlock in the second half.

In the away team's changing room, Old John was making halftime adjustments.

"Lads, a good first half."

His tone was calm.

"We adapted to the opponent's rhythm and found some opportunities."

"But in the second half, we need more patience."

He walked to the tactics board and drew a few lines.

"Their stamina will drop in the second half."

"Especially in the last twenty minutes, that's our chance."

Vardy raised his hand to speak.

"Coach, I think Duggan's positional sense is very good."

"I need to make more runs to create space."

Old John nodded.

"That's right, Jamie."

"In the second half, you can pull wider to the wing more often, creating opportunities for Maloney and Snodgrass to cut inside."

Meanwhile, the atmosphere in the home team's changing room was even more enthusiastic.

Lambert was very pleased with the team's performance.

"Well done, lads!"

His voice was full of excitement.

"We've proven that we're just as good as them!"

"Keep playing like this in the second half, and victory will be ours!"

The players high-fived each other in celebration.

They felt victory was within reach.

But they didn't know that the real test had only just begun.

Lin Feng sat in the away team's box, observing everything on the field with a composed expression.

There was no hint of anxiety in his eyes.

The stalemate in the first half was completely within his expectations.

Colchester United indeed had strength, but they also had weaknesses.

Unreasonable stamina distribution, and a lack of tactical variation.

These weaknesses were not obvious in the first half, but they would be exposed in the second half.

He took out his phone and sent a text message to Old John.

"Wait patiently. Start to speed up after the 60th minute."

Old John, who received the message, nodded slightly.

He fully understood Lin Feng's intention.

This was like a psychological game.

Whoever lost patience first would reveal their flaws.

And what Lin Feng had in abundance was patience.

The second half was about to begin.

The players returned to the field.

The home fans' cheers grew even louder.

They felt victory was within their grasp.

But they didn't know that Hartlepool United, this mighty lion, was merely dozing.

Waiting for the bugle call to awaken.
