13: Chapter 13 The Immortal Collects the Corpse
Drifting clouds slowly swept across the horizon as several figures arrived, stepping on Flying Swords. Their sword auras were of different colors, and they landed steadily in front of the old man, stirring up a faint rustle of wind.
"Steward Wu, another tragedy has occurred at the mine." A young Cultivator looked at the mess on the ground and sighed softly.
Steward Wu nodded slowly upon hearing this, his voice deep, slow, and solemn: "They are all poor souls; do not delay."
He paused, his gaze sweeping over the corpses of the Miners lying on the ground, and continued to instruct in a deep voice: "Quickly gather the bodies properly and send them back to their respective villages. Then, take some silver to distribute, and properly comfort the villagers and their families."
"Remember, you must comfort them properly."
Steward Wu's tone grew heavier, carrying an indisputable authority: "If the villagers are disheartened, no one will dare to come to the Sect to mine in the future."
"Do not forget, when they entered the mine and had their Spiritual Roots tested, they all left their village addresses. Go to the Sect's household registry office and use their Miner tokens to look them up by name. Do not miss a single person."
"Yes!" The other Cultivators replied in unison, saying no more.
As the words fell, the figures of the group flashed simultaneously. Their movements were as light as willow catkins dancing in the wind, slowly landing beside the Miners' corpses.
The elder Cultivator casually patted his waist, and a cluster of lustrous white mist drifted leisurely from it.
At first, the white mist was only the size of a fist, wrapped in a soft, hazy halo that looked very gentle.
When the white mist drifted above a Miner's corpse, it slowly expanded, like a strange, blooming cloud, completely enveloping the body.
Immediately after, the white mist wrapping the corpse was pulled by an invisible force, shrinking to the size of a thumb in the blink of an eye. It turned into a faint glimmer and shot back to the Cultivator's waist.
The other Cultivators followed suit. Clusters of white mist drifted out and flew back; in just a moment, the Miners' corpses on the ground had all been collected.
This scene left Yun Song dumbfounded, his mind a tangled mess of confusion.
He really couldn't figure out what mystery was hidden within that seemingly ordinary white mist that allowed it to collect corpses so miraculously.
After the Cultivators had collected the bodies, they nodded slightly to each other. They then stepped onto their Flying Swords, transforming into several streaks of light that shot into the sky, disappearing into the vast horizon in the blink of an eye.
Yun Song remained frozen in place, his mind repeatedly replaying the white mist drifting out to collect the bodies, unable to snap out of it for a long time.
Various speculations surged in his mind, but every idea that emerged was quickly dismissed by him, leaving him completely bewildered.
He gritted his teeth and muttered in confusion: "That white mist looked unremarkable, yet it could actually swallow a corpse... These Cultivators have kinder hearts than those villains."
After thinking it over, he still had no clue, so he muttered helplessly: "Forget it, forget it. I am just a lowly Miner; thinking about these immortal mysteries is just a waste of effort."
As he finished speaking, he heaved a heavy sigh and decided to stop dwelling on the matter.
It was only then that he suddenly realized he had spent a full twenty days in that dark and sunless Mine Cave.
He subconsciously looked down at his body, and upon doing so, a bitter smile couldn't help but tug at the corner of his mouth.
His originally gray Miner's clothes had long been soaked through with mine dust, turning pitch black and filthy.
His gaze inadvertently swept over his waist, where two tokens hung quietly, appearing exceptionally conspicuous against his pitch-black attire.
