22: Poker's Legacy

At this moment, Ron’s eyes flickered, and a plan slowly emerged in his mind.

Originally, after he delivered the letter to Poke that afternoon, he didn’t intend to take any further action.

Because he knew that Nem, in his trip to Kula City, would certainly not bring back reinforcements.

And after Poke received the letter that afternoon, he only had two paths to take.

Either he would be overcome with fear and flee, disappearing with his assets.

Or he would be bold and audacious, strike back, and take the risk of killing Barto.

Whichever choice he made, it would bring a heavy blow to Barto.

Therefore, Ron concluded that Barto would almost certainly die in five days.

So, he didn't need to do anything extra.

After all, as the saying goes—the more you do, the more mistakes you make; the less you do, the fewer mistakes; do nothing, make no mistakes.

But now, since Barto and Mirar still didn’t intend to let him off the hook.

Then he had to take a risk and act again.

After finalizing his plan, Ron continued to look down.

Suddenly, Ron was taken aback.

“Poke is dead? And he was killed by Grace?”

“Hiss, the most venomous heart belongs to a woman; it’s true…”

Ron couldn't help but gasp, not expecting Madam Grace to be so ruthless.

She actually personally killed the biological father of her own son.

“However, I can understand Grace’s thinking.”

“After all, she is the sister of a Just Knight, and she isn’t afraid of Barto’s threats at all.”

“There’s absolutely no need for her to take risks with Poke…”

Ron thought to himself, then looked at Poke’s legacy.

“Barto’s three hidden stashes of gold are inconvenient for me to retrieve right now.”

“But the gold coins Poke left behind, those are very easy to get my hands on.”

Finally, after Ron finished reading the remaining two pieces of intelligence, he went straight to sleep.

The next morning.

Ron woke up and ate with Litton and his daughter.

Litton told Ron that he was going to take Lisa to school and also submit his resignation to Barto.

He also gave Ron two silver coins, asking him to go out and retrieve the custom-made signboard.

Ron agreed, and after Litton left, he immediately took the money and departed.

Subsequently, he went to another restaurant and sent another letter using the same method as last night.

Only this time, Ron paid for the meal in advance.

Because he knew that if he used the cash-on-delivery method again.

Then Barto, that stingy miser, would very likely refuse to accept it.

After doing this, Ron went to the inn where Poke had rented a room.

Because Poke had planned to escape yesterday, he had only rented the room for one night.

It was still early morning, so ordinarily, that room should not yet have a new tenant.

“Hello, sir, are you here for a meal, accommodation, or to rent a car?”

The front desk attendant asked. Ron, wearing an alchemical mask, answered calmly and naturally.

“Hello, I want to stay here. Can you show me a room first?”

“Of course.”

Immediately, after the front desk inquired about Ron’s accommodation requirements and the price he could pay.

Someone was arranged to take Ron upstairs.

Five minutes later, after looking at several rooms, Ron finally stopped at the door of a medium-sized guest room on the south side of the second floor.

“Hmm, I think this room is good, so I’ll book this one.”

Ron pulled out copper coins and handed them over.

“Alright, sir, please wait a moment, I’ll get the key right away.”

The attendant said, then went downstairs, retrieved the key, and opened the door.

After giving a few simple instructions, Ron asked the attendant to leave and not to disturb him for a while.

After closing the door, Ron, according to the location shown in the intelligence, first moved a stool, then went to the corner cabinet.

This cabinet was over two meters tall. Stepping on the stool and looking up, he saw a small rectangular wooden box in the dead corner between the wardrobe and the wall.

He took down the small wooden box, opened it, and saw a golden gleam inside.

“Ten gold coins, a few silver coins, several forged identity documents, and a low-grade essence fruit.”

Ron’s lips curved upwards; this was Poke’s entire legacy.

Among them, the ten gold coins were what he had slowly saved over the years.

And that essence fruit was bought by Poke through secret channels for his son, Lola.

He had originally intended to wait until Lola was a bit older and capable of practicing the Breathing Technique.

Then he would pay a Potion Master to refine a breakthrough potion, giving Lola a chance to become a true knight.

Unexpectedly, he was suddenly ambushed and killed by Grace last night, dying on the spot before he even had time to leave a last will.

“What a good father, but unfortunately, you’ll never have the chance to give this fruit to your son.”

Ron put the items back, placed the small wooden box in his arms, and then swaggered out of the inn.

By the time Ron had returned to his original appearance and retrieved the signboard Litton had custom-ordered.

He happened to see Litton, who had also returned home.

“Ron, help me bring the ladder.”

Litton said, and then he and Ron together hung the signboard on the top of the front yard gate.

A line of text was written on it—[Litton’s Private Clinic].

“Starting tomorrow, I will be the doctor of a private clinic.”

“As for you, Ron, you will be my most capable assistant!”

Litton looked at the signboard, nodded with satisfaction, and said with a smile.

Ron also bowed slightly and said with a smile.

“Mr. Litton, thank you for your recognition. I will work hard.”

Meanwhile, on the other side.

At the Barto Family home, a servant came to report.

“What? Poke sent someone to bring me breakfast?”

Barto, who was in a critical condition and weak, widened his eyes.

“That scoundrel, what is he up to?”

As a landlord, how could Barto’s family not have a cook? Why would he need an outsider to bring breakfast?

He was a bit puzzled, but since Poke had already paid, being very stingy at heart, he still decided to have the servant bring the breakfast.

When Barto saw that, in addition to breakfast, a letter was also included, he was even more bewildered.

“Poke, what tricks are you playing?”

Barto impatiently opened the letter, and when he saw its contents.

He suddenly sat up, his face filled with shock and anger.

The letter read—

“Barto, by the time you read this letter, it means I am already dead…”

This was a will, detailing Poke and Grace’s affair, and that they had even given birth to Lola.

For some reason, he had planned to elope with Grace and her son last night.

But he knew Grace was ruthless and power-hungry, and it was very likely she wouldn't go with him.

She might even kill him to keep the secret hidden.

So, he had prepared a backup plan, which was this letter.

If he didn’t make it out alive, he would have someone deliver this letter to Barto, taking Grace down with him.

“Bitch! Bitch!”

Barto’s face was twisted, and his breathing was rapid.

Already critically ill, he now saw black before his eyes and nearly died of anger.
