36: A wise sheriff

At this moment, Ron and Litton exchanged glances.

"Doctor Litton, please wait a moment," Matt said to Litton and Ron, completely ignoring them.

Then, he went in alone to announce their arrival.

Litton's expression was solemn as he said to Ron, "Ron, don't be afraid. Once we're inside, I'll explain everything for you."

Ron nodded, his face a little pale, as if he was very scared.

Meanwhile, inside the room, Gevas, upon hearing Matt's report, was somewhat surprised.

"What? Doctor Litton is here too?"

"Yes, Captain," Matt nodded, and Gevas frowned deeply.

After pondering for a moment, Gevas asked, "Does Doctor Litton value that Ron very much?"

"Tell me in detail about the capture of Ron just now. Don't leave out any details."

Upon hearing this, Matt thought for a moment, then recounted the situation in detail.

When Gevas heard how much importance Litton placed on Ron, his eyes darkened, and he felt a surge of irritation.

"Damn it, this is troublesome now..."

Previously, Gevas had learned from the records that Ron's parents were deceased, and he owned no property.

His only sister, Mirar, had long since been sold to the Saar Family.

In such circumstances, Ron was without support, and Gevas only needed to intimidate him slightly to easily subdue him.

Once Ron was locked in a cell, he could be slowly 'processed'.

After a few days, he would surely become more obedient than a pet hunting dog.

At that point, he would be charged with a few crimes and stripped of his freeman status.

Wouldn't it be easy to turn him into a slave?

Pollock just now, and before him, O'Neal, Simon, Sally... they all went through this exact process!

Gevas had originally thought Ron would be the same.

But he never expected this kid to be so lucky as to be valued by Litton?

"..."

Gevas's expression was grim and shifting. After a long while, he took a deep breath and feigned nonchalance, saying, "I understand. Go and bring them in."

"Yes, Captain," Matt responded, then went out and said to Litton and Ron, "The Captain wants you to come in."

Litton's expression was solemn, but he showed no sign of backing down, standing in front of Ron.

"Alright, Ron, let's go in."

Upon entering the office, Gevas was already standing, his expression gentle, and he said with a smile, "Mr. Litton, I didn't expect a simple investigative interview to trouble you to come along."

A simple investigative interview?

Recalling Pollock, who had just been dragged away, Litton didn't believe a word of it.

However, he didn't show it, merely responding with neither subservience nor arrogance, "Lord Gevas, it's no trouble at all."

"As Ron's assistant, it's only natural that I come along to see what's happening."

Gevas nodded, then looked at Ron.

"You are Ron Yeager? Don't be nervous, you just need to answer a few questions for me."

Ron pretended to be timid, quickly lowering his head and agreeing, "Yes, yes, Lord Gevas."

Gevas sat down and then asked in a calm tone, "Ron, you know about Barto's injury, right?"

Upon hearing this, Ron quickly nodded and said, "Yes, Lord Matt has already told me about it."

"Then, what were you doing in the days Barto was injured?"

Ron thought for a moment, then said, "I didn't do anything. I just hid in my own house."

"Your house?" Gevas frowned, staring intently at Ron.

"Didn't all your property get sold to Barto to pay off your debt?"

Ron nodded, saying very naturally, "Yes, but after Lord Barto took my house, he didn't resell it to anyone, nor did he send anyone to guard it."

"So, I had nowhere to go those days, and I just secretly climbed over the wall and stayed for a few nights."

As if afraid Gevas would blame him, Ron quickly added, "Later, I was afraid someone would find out, so I didn't dare to stay any longer and slept in an alley near the hotel for a few more nights..."

"Until I met Doctor Litton. He kindly took me in and let me stay at his house."

Litton, who was nearby, interjected in time, "What Ron said, I can vouch for him."

Gevas nodded, his expression unchanged, and continued to ask, "Then, with all your family's assets taken by Barto, leaving you homeless, don't you hate him?"

Ron was silent for a moment upon hearing this.

Then, he sighed, saying with a complicated expression, "Mr. Gevas, Lord Barto is a wealthy large-scale farmer, and I am just a farmer's child..."

At this point, Ron couldn't continue his sentence.

But his meaning was expressed very clearly.

So, after Gevas casually asked a few more questions, he stood up and said to Ron, "Alright, Ron and Mr. Litton, you may leave."

Ron quickly stood up, saying with some joy, "Really? Thank you, Mr. Gevas. You truly are a wise sheriff."

Litton's expression also relaxed, and he stepped forward to flatter Gevas, "Lord Gevas, as Ron said, you truly are the most outstanding protector of Kura City."

Gevas chuckled, saying very humbly, "Mr. Litton, thank you for your praise, but I think there is still much room for me to improve."

The few of them exchanged pleasantries for a while longer, then Gevas had Matt escort Litton and Ron away.

When Gevas was alone in the office, the smile on his face gradually disappeared, and his expression became somewhat gloomy.

"Damn it, this Litton, he ruined my plans!"

The interrogation just now was merely a pretense.

Because from beginning to end, he had never suspected Ron of being the culprit who set the beast trap.

After all, he had already made a judgment earlier.

The one who killed Barto was either a secret organization with well-informed intelligence and clear division of labor, or a sorcerer with mental energy capable of hypnotizing and guiding Barto to step into a pre-set trap.

Ron, however, was just a weak farmer's son, unrelated to either of those possibilities.

Furthermore, Gevas had no intention of avenging Barto; he merely wanted to use Barto's name to create freeman slaves.

So when he learned that Ron was accompanied by Litton, he knew that the charade was destined to fail.

Therefore, he could only ask a couple of questions, make a show of it, and then let Ron go.

Just then, the two subordinates from earlier came to report.

"Madam Mirar is here."

Gevas paused, then motioned for the two of them to bring Mirar over.

"Mr. Gevas, how did things go?" Mirar immediately asked after the two officers left.

"It can only be considered... barely satisfactory."
