138: Chapter 138 The Battle Lasted a Day and a Night
A faint, grayish-green light barrier spread out in all directions from beneath Xie Feng's feet, firmly shielding the three of them in the center.
The blades and swords of several Taixuan Sect Disciples charging in the front rank struck the barrier, sending sparks flying off their edges, and the recoil sent them stumbling back several steps.
More than a dozen Fourth Realm Cultivators leapt into the air simultaneously from both sides of the square. Several Fifth Realm Elders also stepped down slowly from the stairs of the council hall, no longer merely watching from afar.
They saw the situation with absolute clarity.
The fighting style of those three outsiders was extremely bizarre, unlike any Cultivation Technique from any sect in Jiuzhou. If they let the Disciples continue to march to their deaths, morale would completely collapse.
Xie Feng thickened the Barrier of Nak-Titer by two more layers. The grayish-green light barrier rotated slowly in the center of the square. His magic points were already half depleted, but he knew he must not show any sign of fatigue at this critical moment.
"Tu Wu, take care of those four Fourth Realm Cultivators on the right flank. Don't let them flank Lu Mingyuan. Mingyuan, stall those two Fifth Realm Cultivators on the left for me. You don't have to beat them, just stall them."
"Stall them? Easy for you to say," Lu Mingyuan grumbled before he could even finish his sentence. A Fifth Realm Cultivator had already lunged at him from the side, a longsword wrapped in brilliant metal-attribute spiritual energy thrusting straight toward his left ribs.
Lu Mingyuan clapped his hands together, and a tiny Spacetime Gate opened silently in front of the sword tip. The blade plunged through the portal, and Lu Mingyuan whipped out a plasma gun with a quick flick of his wrist, shocking the Cultivator until black smoke spewed from his mouth.
The Cultivator screamed in agony. Lu Mingyuan didn't even cast him a second glance, immediately opening another portal that swallowed a Third Realm Cultivator who was attempting a sneak attack from behind.
Tu Ziguan's maxim gun barrel was glowing red-hot. Xie Feng tapped the casing with his chill staff to rapidly cool it down.
The runic circuits on the barrel's surface began to crack under the continuous, high-intensity fire. He poured the last half-canteen of water into the water-cooling jacket, where it instantly hissed into white steam.
Tossing an empty ammo belt onto the ground, he pulled a block of C4 from his waist and pitched it toward the several Fourth Realm Cultivators on the right who were attempting to form a battle array.
The C4 arced briefly through the air, and just as it reached the center of their formation, he shot and detonated it mid-air. A dark-gold fireball erupted across the square, the shockwave blasting those Fourth Realm Cultivators back over a dozen paces and instantly shattering their battle array.
Xie Feng used this brief opening to reorganize the magic within his body.
His current state was delicate. The marks of all the Great Old Ones and Outer Gods were awaiting his command, but he knew full well that invoking any Old One projection right now would reduce the entire square to ash.
Xie Feng had no desire to say goodbye to his brothers just yet.
He could only rely on his own magic points and the few summoning Spells that didn't require a divine manifestation.
"Brain Matter," he called out deep within his consciousness, "scan those Sixth Realm Elders who are still spectating on the edge of the square and see whose willpower is the weakest."
Brain Matter rolled over deep inside the choroid plexus of his lateral ventricle. Its chitinous shell produced a faint friction sound in the cerebrospinal fluid, and then an extremely fine, sharp mental wave probed out from between his eyebrows, silently sweeping across the perimeter of the square.
"The one on the far right wearing a gray robe—just barely Sixth Realm, with unstable Divine Sense. His spiritual energy fluctuation frequency shows obvious emotional instability. He's probably terrified after witnessing his fellow Disciple turn into moss earlier.
His fear level is extremely high. Perfect target."
Magic unlocked the mouth on his left hand, and the God of Depravity immediately began frantically chanting terrifying knowledge.
No one could understand it, but anyone who heard it suffered a mental attack.
While everyone's attention was drawn to the barrier and the gunfire, the sound quietly slithered into that Elder's ears.
A few breaths later, an agonizing, bloodcurdling shriek echoed from the edge of the square.
The gray-robed Elder clutched his head in both hands and fell to his knees. His pupils dilated wildly, and he babbled incoherent phrases like "twisted" and "don't turn me into moss!"
Several nearby Elders rushed forward to support him, but he had completely suffered a mental breakdown. Shoving aside the people holding him, he sprinted frantically back toward the council hall, stumbling as he ran.
At that moment, the morale on the square completely collapsed.
Panic spread like a plague from low-realm Disciples to high-realm Cultivators. The Fourth and Fifth Realm Cultivators who were pushing forward noticeably slowed their pace, and a few even began retreating toward the edge of the square.
Unfortunately, under the supervision of the Elders behind them, the Cultivators couldn't flee the battlefield either.
They had no choice but to bite the bullet and continue their frantic assault.
"Even that didn't scare them off? Xie Feng, got any other tricks?"
Tu Ziguan hurriedly pulled out a fresh barrel and jacket, swapping them onto his machine gun.
"You brought this on yourselves! Don't blame me!"
Xie Feng stopped holding back. Over the past month of undercover work, he had come to realize that these bastard Cultivators didn't treat common people like human beings at all.
If you play dirty, then I'll play dirtier!
Xie Feng grabbed at the air with his left hand, and a razor-thin spacetime rift tore open silently beside him. The first Formless Spawn slithered out from the rift.
Its gelatinous body squirmed forward across the bluestone pavers. Wherever it passed, any swords or blades that slashed into it became entrapped in the viscous gel, impossible to pull out.
Next came a Byakhee, its dark brown chitinous carapace gleaming with a dull luster in the sunlight. Its leathery wing membranes whistled sharply as they snapped open.
Xie Feng pointed his right hand toward the center of the square. The Byakhee swooped down, snagging two Cultivators who had just drawn their swords in its foreclaws and hurling them into the air, followed by two dull thuds at the edge of the square.
Then came the Xyclotl Star-spawn. (This Spell is recorded in the revelations of glaaki.)
This kind of monster is a species enslaved by the Insects from Shaggai during their wanderings. A Xyclotl Star-spawn looks like a massive tree growing tentacles. (Image attached)
These carnivorous monsters hail from the planet Xyclotl. They possess robust bodies and low intelligence, making them ideal slaves for the Insects from Shaggai.
Xyclotl Star-spawn can strike or capture prey with their tentacular appendages and devour them.
Brain Matter inside his brain let out a delighted sound and began controlling them using the Shaggai language.
These Star-spawn were around five meters tall, more than twice the size of a Formless Spawn. Their gelatinous trunks were densely covered with minute black specks. As their massive bodies squeezed out of the spacetime rift, spiderweb-like cracks cracked across the bluestone pavers beneath them.
Xie Feng let out a few strange cackles. While the mouth on his left palm continued cursing up a storm, the Damage Reduction Spell had already wrapped him up tightly, allowing him to take several incoming hits head-on without even ripping his cloak.
Behind him, Tu Ziguan rested the barrel of his maxim on the edge of the barrier. As soon as one ammo belt was spent, he loaded another, sweeping a dark-gold whip of light from the left flank to the right, pinning back the rear-rank Cultivators who attempted to bypass the barrier, occasionally throwing out a few C4 blocks and booby traps.
Lu Mingyuan's plasma weapon detonated in the center of the square, creating a brilliant arc of blue-white light. Arcs of electricity leaped across the bluestone pavers, relentlessly chasing several Third Realm Disciples, while he recklessly teleported Cultivators around with his new Spacetime Gate Spell.
This chaotic battle continued uninterrupted until the sun set and the moon rose.
