153: Chapter 153 Two Groups of Bad Guys
The city lord of the Irkut City-State sat cross-legged on the stone platform facing due north, with a bowl of completely chilled beast-bone soup placed in front of him.
Several Elders sat around on the straw mats on both sides; someone was toying with a bone piece carved with a five-toed footprint, while another was slowly whittling the scraps of a new totem pole with a dagger.
The middle-aged man who delivered the message stood at the doorway, recounting every detail he had seen in the dome house.
"That woman has fallen ill."
The middle-aged man loosened the collar of his thick leather robe, his tone excited, "When the blizzard came last night, they tried to leave the city and walked a short distance outside the low wall when that woman suddenly collapsed. The man next to her, the one wearing a yellow robe and holding a folding fan, they aren't husband and wife; they are siblings."
The person holding the bone piece nearby waved it excitedly.
"Great! She doesn't have a husband, this is just right!"
The middle-aged man took a sip of soup and continued:
"After I finished delivering the city lord's invitation, that blind man stared at me for a long time. His posture crouching beside the charcoal brazier didn't change, and he didn't say many words from beginning to end, but every time I spoke, his eye covered by the veil followed my voice."
When I left, I deliberately breathed out, and he didn't question it, but his companion, the young man with his waist hung full of copper shells, immediately nudged him with his elbow. These two people already know we aren't ordinary humans."
An extremely thin and tall Elder on the straw mat on the far left placed his dagger on his knees, and the wick of the beast-oil lamp crackled:
"Did any of you scan how many things are actually hanging on that blind man's body?
I feel something is wrong with him; the brothers at the door passed word that his aura is somewhat similar to ours, yet also somewhat opposed to it.
I stood at the edge of the square for a moment last night, and before I even touched the hem of his garment, I was bounced back by an invisible force. It seems there are other gods on him."
The very first person placed the bone piece on his knees, the five-toed footprint on the bone piece gleaming with a grayish-white luster under the beast-oil lamp:
"Could they be here to snatch the sacrificial offering from us? Any single thing he has on him is enough for Father to withdraw the blizzard from the Northern Wasteland. Does he want that girl too?"
"Unlikely."
The city lord finally spoke, carrying the same guttural resonance as the guard.
"He was the first person to decide to leave the city last night. If he wanted that girl, he wouldn't have taken her away in the blizzard.
He is protecting that girl.
The power inside that girl is something we have never encountered before. When the blizzard whipped up last night, she was the only one who collapsed.
The power within her sensed the aura of the blizzard and actively began to repel it.
Father's blizzard can activate all the fragments of the Old Gods hidden in the Bloodline, but the fragments inside that girl did not submit; they are hostile to Father.
Fragments of the Old Gods of this level, even if only as big as a finger, are enough to let Father achieve a Breakthrough against a layer of restrictions placed by the Old Gods."
"So." That slender Elder thrust his dagger back into his waist.
"What we need to do is actually very simple. That girl is ill and cannot go far. The man in the yellow robe has low cultivation, and although that blind man is covered in things, he dares not act rashly; he is wary that starting a battle in the city would hurt that girl.
The young man covered in copper shells relies on external objects, not cultivation.
And that person who has been squatting in the corner and hardly speaking, their spiritual power fluctuation is the closest to that of a human, but it is also too weak."
He placed the bone piece on the stone platform.
"With so many offspring in the city, let's all make a move together and invite them to the square to attend the North Wind Festival. Change the sacrificial target to that girl."
"What if that blind man tries to stop us?" the middle-aged man who delivered the message asked softly.
The city lord picked up the beast-bone soup and took a sip.
"Isn't he wary that starting a battle in the city will hurt the girl? Then let the blizzard continue to fall; before the next sacrifice, the north wind will not stop.
They cannot leave; trap them and let Father take action.
The North Wind Festival is at noon, and everyone in the square will be there. Arrange that girl in the front-row VIP seat of the sacrificial circle, light six totem poles, and offer venison and musk ox as usual.
When the totem poles begin to resonate and the blizzard reaches its most violent moment, Father will forcefully suck her power out from within her body.
That power does not belong to her; when Father sucks it away, she will not die. Once Father takes her away, she might even turn misfortune into a blessing."
"And then?" asked the middle-aged man delivering the message.
"Then the blizzard will subside, allowing the rest of them to leave, continue their journey for trade, and return to Jiuzhou. We will receive Father's next layer of blessing, and Irkut can survive for another year."
The city lord picked up the bone piece from the stone platform, his thumb rubbing back and forth over the five-toed footprint.
"As for whether those things on the blind man will hold a grudge against us because of this...
He already struggles just to protect himself in the blizzard last night, how could he hold a grudge?
The other person has the gaze of the Yellow King on him, but this is not the territory of the Yellow King. The permafrost of the Northern Wasteland has only carved one name from beginning to end."
He turned the bone piece over and pressed it face down on the stone platform.
"That lord will not lose to any external Old Gods."
It's a good thing Xie Feng didn't hear this, otherwise he would definitely curse out loud.
"Keep bragging."
At this moment, he was squatting at the edge of the square of the Irkut City-State, one hand pressing on the head of the cold crystal blind staff, and the fingers of his other hand slightly splayed. Silvery-white threads of magic slowly oozed from his fingertips, silently weaving an extremely thin and transparent grayish-green mist in the air.
The Rlyeh Fog Creation Technique, given by Lord Cthulhu when he was scolding him earlier.
Tu Wu and Xie Feng, who were outside under the guise of sightseeing, suddenly sneezed.
"Who is cursing this old man?"
"That might be quite a few."
Tu Wu was burying things and replied with his head lowered.
"Makes sense, keep working."
Young Master Xu Liujing nearby looked terrified.
"Are we really going to do this? If these Northern Wasteland people are just doing ordinary prayers, wouldn't this be going too far?"
"It's fine, just trust me."
"Ancestral Master above, please forgive this junior; I am also forced into this."
Xie Feng slapped the Young Master on the back of his head.
"Where do you get so many words? Let me ask you, does my ancestor count as one of the Ancestral Masters?"
"I suppose so."
"Then you listen to me!"
"You are not your own ancestor!"
Tu Ziguan recalled their past experience of Transmigration to Fengle City, as well as the time they caused a ruckus in the imperial palace over the cosplay arcade token machine.
"Hard to say, Xie Feng might be his ancestor, but it's unlikely his ancestor is Xie Feng."
After saying this, Tu Wu felt the top of his head felt a bit pointy.
Xu Liujing looked at the two of them as if seeing ghosts, pouted, and started working.
The passing merchants and the residents preparing within the city could not see what the two bad guys and their accomplice were doing.
