142: Chapter 142 The Cruel White-Robed Magician
"How could it all disappear overnight? You're bragging again. Do you know how much grain it takes to feed 500,000 people? Besides, places like granaries are usually heavily guarded. Would they let thieves be so brazen?" The scrawny guard's mouth curled up almost to his ears as he pointed at the tall guard and said mockingly.
"What do you know? Have you heard of Space Magic? That's a magical secret technique that has been lost for hundreds of years. It's incredibly powerful!" The tall guard said mysteriously, "I heard that all of Wei He's subordinates know Space Magic. This world is bound to change sooner or later!"
"What are you saying? Shh! Keep it down, don't let anyone hear you. Don't talk about the world changing again. If you don't want to live, I still do!" The scrawny guard put a finger to his lips and said very nervously.
"Alright, alright, I won't say it. I won't say it anymore!" The tall guard scratched his head and said with a grin.
"Hey? What are you doing here?" The scrawny guard asked, very vigilantly, as he saw the Spy walking toward the gate.
"Are you blind? Look at who I am!" The Spy said irritably. He had already disguised himself as the officer in charge of this granary when he approached it.
"Oh, it's Lord Lu Jia! My eyes were dim, please forgive me!" The scrawny guard quickly bowed to apologize, afraid that this petty officer would hold a grudge against him.
"Hmm, alright. No suspicious people have approached here, right?" The Spy asked, pretending to be nonchalant.
"No, no, everything is normal here. Not even a mosquito could get close!" The tall guard replied quickly.
"Hmm, stand guard properly and don't slack off! Do you hear me?" The Spy swaggered into the gate.
"Yes, my lord!" The two men said in unison.
The Spy arrived inside the granary and saw grain filling the storehouse. Under the pretext of inspection, he chased all the staff out, then took out the red Magic Crystal from his body, muttering: "This Magic Empire isn't completely useless. At the very least, this fire stone is quite beautiful! Hahahaha!"
Laughing, the Spy rubbed two pieces of Magic Crystal together. Before long, fires broke out in several places throughout the granary. The fire grew larger and larger, and the Spy disguised himself as another guard. While others were busy fighting the fire, he ran to other granaries and continued to set fires. In just a short time, all four or five granaries in the courtyard were ablaze.
Those responsible for fighting the fire were dumbfounded. They never expected that the fire would spread through all the granaries in the entire courtyard at the same time.
By the time the fire was completely extinguished, it had been burning for several days, and all the granaries had been reduced to ashes, with all the grain inside destroyed.
"Who? Who on earth did this? What are you all good for? Go investigate, find out for me immediately!" Lu Jia walked out of his room, reeking of alcohol. Seeing the scene before him, he instantly sobered up and shouted angrily at the guards.
"We don't know, my lord. Weren't you inside just a moment ago?" Several staff members at the granary said with innocent faces.
"What? You made a mistake in your duties, and you dare to slander this official? Guards, seize them all, interrogate them with torture, and find the real culprit for me!" Hearing their words, Lu Jia's eyes were practically spitting fire, and he angrily ordered the soldiers to arrest them.
"My lord, my lord, we were wrong, we were really wrong, please spare us!" The few people were led away by the soldiers.
"What am I to do now? The grain is gone, it's all gone. Ah, hahahaha, you, why didn't you notify me sooner?" Lu Jia laughed in extreme anger, pointing at the soldiers nearby.
"My lord, we notified you long ago, but you were drunk for several days. No matter what we said, we couldn't wake you up!" A soldier replied, bowing respectfully.
"Hahahaha, drinking ruins things, drinking ruins things!" Lu Jia laughed, his entire demeanor nearing madness.
Meanwhile, in Laiseluo City, several other large granaries were also reduced to ashes by fire, just like the one Lu Jia was in charge of.
At the Laiselo Temple, Emperor Alexander looked angrily at the memorial before him, staring fixedly at the minister who submitted it. After a long while, he squeezed out a sentence: "Tell me, what is going on? Why did this happen?"
"Your Majesty, all the granaries in the city caught fire at the same time. The city's yamen runners all rushed to fight the fire, but unfortunately, everything was burning, and the runners couldn't put it out in time. Now, the granaries are nothing but a pile of charred remains!" The minister knelt on the ground, cold sweat dripping from his forehead onto the floor.
"Now not only is there no grain supply for the front line, but even feeding the common people in the city is a problem!" Emperor Alexander supported his forehead, his tone full of helplessness.
"Your Majesty, I am guilty, I deserve to die. Please calm your anger, Your Majesty!" The minister kneeling on the ground banged his head hard against the floor, blood streaming down his forehead.
"Of course you deserve to die. Guards, drag him out and behead him!" Emperor Alexander had never been this angry before. Several fully armed soldiers immediately dragged the minister away.
"Send all those who were guarding the granaries to the front line. In the event of battle, have them charge at the very front!" Emperor Alexander continued to order.
The White-Robed Magician on the front line did not know that the granaries had been destroyed. He only thought that the grain transport route must have been attacked by Wei He's Puppet Beasts, and he still wanted to send men to guard the transport troops.
"Great Magician, we have no more grain to use. We should retreat!" A magician wearing a red magic robe said cautiously to the White-Robed Magician.
"No, we cannot retreat. When we set out, His Majesty repeatedly urged us to take the entire Southern Province. If we return now with our tails between our legs, His Majesty will surely be furious!" The White-Robed Magician said with a firm expression.
"If we have no grain, don't we still have those cattle and horses? Use them to stave off hunger!" The White-Robed Magician pointed to the prisoners outside and said.
"But that's still not enough! We still have thousands of people, and these prisoners have already been killed down to just a few dozen!" A servant said at this moment, in a worried tone.
"Not enough? Then kill these servants too!" The White-Robed Magician said, pointing to the talkative servant.
"Ah! My lord, no! My lord, spare me! I won't talk back again!" Hearing the White-Robed Magician's words, the servant knelt on the ground, frantically slapping his own face with both hands, begging for mercy.
"Hmph, useless thing. Just make your final contribution to the Magic Empire. This is your honor. Otherwise, you'll be a waste your whole life!" After saying this, the White-Robed Magician pointed his finger, and a beam of holy light shot out from it. A bloody hole instantly appeared on the servant's forehead, and he collapsed to the ground.
The other magicians showed a hint of reluctance on their faces. A few who were further away whispered to each other behind his back: "In the end, he won't eat us too, will he?"
"Shh, be careful, stop talking!" The people next to them raised their fingers, signaling them to be quiet.
Wei He, who was in Kela City, originally thought that since the granaries in Laiseluo City were burned, these Magic Legions on the front line would surely fall apart. He didn't expect them to still be holding on, which left Wei He somewhat baffled.
