56: Chapter 56 The Truth Begins to Emerge
The light faded away.
Chen Mo found himself standing in a completely different space.
It was not a cave, not a corridor, not any scene he had ever seen before. It was a Void Realm—no up, no down, no left, no right, no front, no back. There was only endless darkness and countless points of light.
Those points of light were dense, like a starry sky, or perhaps some kind of gigantic network.
Every point of light was connected to a golden thread.
Those threads extended in all directions, disappearing into the depths of the darkness.
Chen Mo looked down at himself.
A thread was also connected to his body.
It extended from his chest, connecting to the nearest point of light.
【Entering the core area of the Source of the Sequence】
【Current coordinates: Sequence Network Hub】
【Connection count detected: 3,847,291】
Three million, eight hundred and forty thousand.
This was the number of all Chosen Ones.
Each point of light represented a living person.
Those dim points of light represented people who had already died.
Chen Mo took a step forward.
There was no ground, but he could "walk."
Those points of light swept past him, some near, some far. He felt as if he were traveling through a starry sky, or perhaps wandering inside some gigantic living organism.
He did not know how long he had been walking.
A gigantic sphere of light appeared ahead.
It was larger than any point of light, as big as a star.
It floated in the center of the Void Realm, rotating slowly.
All those golden threads were connected to it.
That was the Source of the Sequence.
Chen Mo stared at that sphere of light.
In his Eye of Sinister Sight, its internal structure was clearly visible—
Countless lines of rules were interwoven together, forming a gigantic web. Every node of the web corresponded to a Sequence ability. Every line of the web corresponded to a rule.
This web was the underlying code of the Ghost Realm.
All Ghost Shadows, all Chosen Ones, and all rules were derived from here.
Chen Mo took a step forward.
The sphere of light suddenly stopped rotating.
A voice resounded in his mind.
It did not come from the outside; it appeared directly in his consciousness.
"You have come."
Chen Mo did not speak.
The voice had no emotion, no fluctuation, like a machine reading aloud.
"You are the 1274th lifeform to enter here."
"The previous 1273 have all perished."
"You are the weakest one, and also the fastest one."
Chen Mo opened his mouth.
"Who are you?"
The voice was silent for a second.
"You may call me, the will of the ghost realm."
The will of the ghost realm.
Chen Mo's heartbeat quickened by a beat.
That was the entity that controlled the entire Ghost Realm.
"You want to know the truth," the will of the ghost realm said.
Chen Mo nodded.
"The truth is—this is an experiment."
The surrounding points of light began to move, arranging themselves into some kind of pattern.
"Your world is just one of countless experimental fields."
"We plant seeds, observe their growth, and record data."
"You call it the Ghost Realm. We call it, a petri dish."
Chen Mo's hand tightened around his cleaver.
But he did not move.
He knew that in the face of such a thing, taking action was useless.
"Why?"
"For evolution," the will of the ghost realm said. "The evolution of life requires pressure. We provide the pressure and observe the results. The most excellent individuals will be selected."
"Selected for what?"
"To become a new Observer," the will of the ghost realm said. "Join us."
Chen Mo was silent for a few seconds.
"What about those Transformed Ones?"
"Failed samples," the will of the ghost realm said. "The data had flaws, so they were recycled and processed."
Zhang Weiguo's face flashed through Chen Mo's mind.
The person who did not want to kill but could not control himself.
The person who smiled and said thank you at the end.
"How long will your experiment last?"
"Until a perfect individual appears," the will of the ghost realm said. "An individual capable of a Breakthrough against all rules and transcending all limitations."
It paused.
"You are the closest one."
Chen Mo was stunned for a moment.
"Me?"
"Your Pupil of the Sequence is the only one that had an autonomous Awakening," the will of the ghost realm said. "Everyone else's was implanted. Only yours grew on its own."
Those points of light began to gather toward Chen Mo.
"You are qualified to become an Observer."
"Join us and leave this place."
"Or, continue the experiment until death."
Chen Mo looked at those points of light.
Looking at that gigantic sphere of light.
Looking at that golden thread on his chest.
Then he opened his mouth.
"I refuse."
Those points of light stopped.
"Why?" the will of the ghost realm asked.
Chen Mo did not answer.
He turned around and walked back.
"You will die," the voice of the will of the ghost realm sounded behind him. "All rules will target you. All Ghost Shadows will hunt you down. You will die on the road, in a corner, in a place no one knows."
Chen Mo did not look back.
"Perhaps," he said. "But that is my own choice."
He continued to walk forward.
Those points of light receded behind him.
The Source of the Sequence grew further and further away.
Finally, he walked out of that Void Realm.
Standing at the entrance of the trial tower.
Lin Wei was waiting for him.
Seeing him come out, she breathed a sigh of relief.
"Are you okay?"
Chen Mo nodded.
He sat into the pickup truck and started the engine.
Lin Wei got into the passenger seat.
The pickup truck drove back the way they came.
In the rearview mirror, that tower grew further and further away.
Chen Mo gripped the steering wheel, looking at the road ahead.
Experimental field.
Observer.
Perfect individual.
He did not care.
He only wanted to live.
In his own way.
