147: Chapter 147 Hypoglycemia
It was Leng Yue.
The image instantly surfaced in Jiang Chen's mind.
On the day of the arrest at the logistics park, she was in her police uniform, standing tall with a sharp gaze. Amidst a group of men, her speech was crisp and decisive, carrying an aura of integrity that felt out of place with the surrounding clamor.
"Captain Leng, hello."
Jiang Chen's tone was calm, without a hint of panic. "I am currently at the entrance of Jiangcheng University. Do you need me to go to the police station to cooperate, or can we communicate over the phone?"
Leng Yue had clearly done her homework in advance and knew of Jiang Chen's student status, so her tone softened slightly.
"There is no need to make a special trip. I happen to be in the vicinity of the university investigating leads related to Wantai. Let's meet at the convenience café on the west side of the school gate in ten minutes. It won't take up too much of your time."
"Alright, I will wait for you there."
Jiang Chen hung up the phone, told Lu Zheng to park the car, and walked to the designated café himself.
He chose a quiet spot by the window. Just as he had ordered two cups of warm water, a tall, upright figure pushed the door open and walked in.
Leng Yue was not wearing her police uniform; she was dressed in simple casual wear, with her long hair tied into a high ponytail, revealing her smooth forehead.
Her features were still as exquisite and defined as ever, and that chill between her brows remained, but without the oppressive feeling of the police uniform, she seemed much more relaxed and approachable.
She walked straight over and sat down opposite Jiang Chen. Without pleasantries, she pulled a request for assistance notice from a document folder, pushed it toward him, and got straight to the point.
"Mr. Jiang, we are currently investigating a case of illegal capital flow involving Wantai Real Estate. We discovered that your company, Chenxing Capital, bid for the property management fee income rights of Wantai Commercial Management today. We need you to briefly explain the reason for the bid and the source of funds."
As she spoke, her gaze rested calmly on Jiang Chen, devoid of any scrutinizing intent. Her fingertips rested naturally on the edge of the table—clean and slender, just as sharp and efficient as she was.
Jiang Chen glanced at the notice, his expression composed, and responded clearly and logically: "Chenxing Capital is an investment firm. Participating in compliant financial asset transactions is a normal business practice. The property management fee income rights for these three complexes under Wantai Commercial Management have stable cash flow and no operational risks; they are high-quality passive income assets."
"The starting bid for this asset was 18 million. We secured it with a compliant bid of 24 million. The source of funds is entirely my personal legal assets. The entire process was conducted through the formal procedures of the Jiangbei Financial Assets Exchange, and all qualifications and proof of funds are available for inspection at any time."
His speaking pace was steady, his gaze open and honest. Every word was backed by evidence, unlike those businessmen who get nervous upon seeing the police and want to hide their entire net worth.
Leng Yue nodded slightly.
Before coming, she had already reviewed the transaction records of Chenxing Capital. All procedures were indeed fully compliant; finding Jiang Chen was just a routine procedure.
But sitting down to talk face-to-face, looking at this young person before her who was unbelievably composed, she couldn't help but feel a twinge of surprise.
His peers were still burying themselves in books on campus, yet this person had already set up a watertight scheme involving tens of millions in assets.
"Captain Leng."
Jiang Chen initiated the conversation, his tone indifferent.
"May I ask, does the Wantai Real Estate case involve any criminal risk? I just acquired these assets; if Wantai is involved in illegal activities, the subsequent operations might be affected."
Leng Yue raised her eyes, meeting his calm gaze, and hesitated for half a second.
Within the scope of compliance, she responded simply: "The actual controller of Wantai, Zhou Wanquan, is suspected of illegally misappropriating company funds and privately connecting to illegal funding channels to fill a capital gap."
"We have already obtained some evidence and are conducting further investigations. However, you can rest assured that your side belongs to a normal, compliant transaction, and the asset ownership will not be implicated by the case."
As soon as she finished speaking, her phone on the table rang urgently.
Leng Yue answered the call, listened for a few moments, and her brows suddenly knitted together. Her tone instantly became sharp: "Is the location confirmed? I'm heading over immediately. Notify the team to set up surveillance, and don't alert the enemy!"
After hanging up, she stood up and left.
Her movements were a bit hurried. Her elbow brushed against the notebook on the edge of the table; it slid off, and several clue sheets tucked inside scattered all over the floor.
Jiang Chen leaned over to help her pick them up.
While organizing them, his fingertips inadvertently brushed against her hand. The touch was cool.
Leng Yue subconsciously pulled her hand back, the tips of her ears turning slightly red, but the expression on her face remained steady. She said in a low voice, "Thank you."
"Emergency mission?"
Jiang Chen handed the notebook back to her, his gaze sweeping over her slightly pale complexion, and added casually.
"There is a convenience store on the right side of the school gate. Looking at your state, you must be too busy to eat. Buy something to eat on the way and replenish your energy before you go."
Leng Yue's figure paused.
She had been busy since early morning without eating or drinking, relying entirely on sheer willpower to keep going.
She thought she had concealed it well enough, but she didn't expect Jiang Chen to see through it at a glance.
In all her years as a police officer, people around her either kept their distance or only spoke about work. Rarely had anyone so quietly noticed the state of her health.
This concern came so naturally, so naturally that she didn't know how to respond for a moment.
"Thanks for the reminder, I'm leaving now."
She suppressed the strange feeling in her heart, her tone still cool, but with less aloofness than when she first entered.
She turned and walked quickly out of the café toward the police car parked on the side of the road.
Jiang Chen watched her retreating figure as she left efficiently, his lips curling slightly. He didn't think much of it and stood up, preparing to return to school.
Just as he reached the entrance of the café, he saw that near the police car not far away, Leng Yue was bending over to get in, but her figure suddenly swayed. Her hand instinctively grabbed the car body, and her face was terrifyingly pale.
It was hypoglycemia.
Long hours of high-intensity work coupled with an empty stomach had caused dizziness.
Jiang Chen's footsteps paused, then he strode over. Before she could react, he reached out and gently steadied her: "Careful."
"I'm fine."
Leng Yue subconsciously wanted to pull away, but the feeling of weakness all over her body could not be faked.
She had been handling cases for years with irregular schedules; hypoglycemia was an old ailment, but it had to flare up at the worst possible time today.
Jiang Chen did not let go, his grip gentle but firm.
He supported her to the shade of a tree by the roadside, turned and walked quickly into the convenience store, bought a bottle of warm sugar water and a bag of whole-wheat bread, returned, and stuffed them into her hand.
"Replenish your sugar first, then go execute your mission. Don't force yourself."
His tone was very flat, without any excessive attentiveness, yet it was so considerate that one could not refuse.
Leng Yue looked down at the sugar water and bread in her hands, her throat moving slightly.
She wanted to say no need, but her body truly couldn't hold on any longer. In the end, she whispered a "Thank you," unscrewed the cap, and drank it in small sips.
The warm sweetness slid down her throat, the dizziness receded bit by bit, and color finally returned to her face.
"Thank you. How much is it? I'll transfer it to you." She took out her phone.
"It's a small matter, don't worry about it."
Jiang Chen waved his hand, stepped back, and pulled the distance back to just the right amount. He was crisp and decisive, with no intention of using this opportunity to strike up a conversation.
"The mission is important. Stay safe. If the police need any further cooperation, feel free to contact me at any time."
After saying this, he turned and walked toward the campus, his posture upright and his gait composed, without leaving a single extra glance behind.
