92: Chapter 92 Interesting Stories
Jiang Chen looked at the screen, the corners of his mouth curling up slightly as his fingertips quickly replied: [Got it. I'll head over to sign in later.]
Su Wanqing: [Mm, manage your time well. Don't be too late; it wouldn't look good if the Counselor calls you out in front of everyone.]
Su Wanqing: [Want to grab dinner after the assembly tonight? A new private kitchen opened near my place, and the reviews are pretty good.]
Jiang Chen didn't decline and simply agreed: [Sure, send me the location. I'll head straight there to find you once the assembly is over.]
Putting down his phone, Jiang Chen tossed it back into the cup holder and casually tapped his fingers on the steering wheel twice.
The green light turned on, and he stepped on the accelerator to continue forward.
The traffic on the overpass wasn't very dense, so he drove smoothly, leaving a narrow crack in the window.
The cool evening breeze poured into the car, blowing the stray hairs on his forehead back slightly. His expression was indifferent yet relaxed.
The car drove off the overpass and entered the city roads. The phone vibrated gently again.
The message was from Lin Wan.
Lin Wan: [I haven't seen you these past few days. Where did you go?]
Lin Wan: [Let me tell you, I encountered something ridiculous and hilarious at the law firm.]
Jiang Chen replied: [Went to Lanbei City to handle some matters, just got back to Jiangcheng. Go ahead.]
Lin Wan's reply came a few seconds later. Without any exaggerated exclamations, she still managed to tell the story with great vividness.
Lin Wan: [Today, an older lady came in to consult about a neighbor dispute. She said the neighbor downstairs makes noise every night in the middle of the night, seriously affecting her rest, and she wanted us to sue them for compensation.]
Lin Wan: [The lawyer mentoring me asked her to specify the source of the noise. The lady hesitated for a long time before saying the neighbor was practicing handstands at home in the middle of the night, making thumping sounds against the wall. She even said the shadow cast on the window during the handstand looked like a dark figure, scaring her so much she couldn't sleep.]
Lin Wan: [We went to verify it and found out that the lady lives on the top floor, and nobody even lives downstairs. The so-called neighbor was actually her getting up at night and doing handstands against the bathroom wall herself. The shadow was cast on the window, and she scared herself, holding a grudge against the floor below for half a month.]
Lin Wan: [When the lawyer explained it clearly to her, the lady was stunned for three minutes. Finally, she said, "So I've been getting angry at myself," and turned to leave. The lawyer and I were at the firm holding back laughter until our shoulders shook.]
Looking at the message, a faint trace of a smile appeared in Jiang Chen's originally indifferent eyes.
Lin Wan's way of telling the most nonsensical anecdotes in the calmest tone created a full sense of contrast and felt exceptionally lively.
He tapped the screen lightly, replied with "That's quite interesting," then put away his phone, stepped on the gas, and drove toward Jiangcheng University.
Jiang Chen parked the car in the school's east gate parking lot and walked toward the School of Finance teaching building while carrying his backpack.
Before he could reach the building, someone hooked an arm around his neck from behind.
"Holy crap, Jiang Chen! You're still alive?"
Wang Hao hung on his shoulder with a grin, his curly hair flying wildly in the wind. He held an iced Americano in his hand, the straw already bitten out of shape.
Jiang Chen pried the hand off his neck and said in a flat tone, "Alive."
"Where have you been running off to these past few days? You really screwed me over."
Wang Hao followed beside him, grumbling incessantly.
"In Wednesday's Financial Markets class, Old Zhang called roll. I helped you shout 'Here,' but he asked why your voice had changed. I said you had a cold, and he even asked how a voice could be so booming with a cold?"
Jiang Chen glanced at him: "And then?"
"Then he made me stand up and stared at me for five seconds, exposing right then and there that I wasn't you!"
Wang Hao had a face of grief and indignation. "Over sixty people in the class were looking at me. It was so awkward I wanted to crawl into a crack in the ground. Finally, Old Zhang told you to submit a self-reflection to his office before next Monday. Hurry up and write it, don't drag me down with you."
"Got it," Jiang Chen replied.
The two of them crossed the plaza in front of the library and noticed a stage being set up.
Workers were climbing up and down carrying speakers, banner stands were being erected, and boxes of mineral water were piled on the ground. They were clearly preparing for the School of Finance's assembly this afternoon.
"Oh, right."
Wang Hao suddenly slapped his head.
"At three o'clock this afternoon, there's a School of Finance Freshman Entrance Education and Academic Atmosphere Construction Mobilization Assembly at the sports field. The Counselor sent a notice in the group; everyone from the Department of Finance must be there for on-site sign-in. No leaves of absence allowed!"
Jiang Chen pulled out his phone and scrolled through the class group. The Counselor had sent three consecutive messages, with the last sentence ending in three exclamation marks.
All students of the Department of Finance must be present for on-site sign-in. No leaves of absence allowed!!!
"What time?" Jiang Chen asked.
"Three o'clock. It's two-forty now."
Wang Hao checked his phone, his expression turning mischievous. "And the host for this assembly is Teacher Su, Su Wanqing."
Jiang Chen's footsteps paused for a moment. He didn't say much, just slung his backpack over his shoulder and turned toward the sports field.
"Hey, wait for me! I haven't finished my coffee!" Wang Hao quickly followed.
Quite a few people were already sitting on the sports field. Students from all four years of the School of Finance were gathered, forming a dense black mass.
Jiang Chen and Wang Hao found a seat near the edge. The sun overhead wasn't particularly fierce, but the muggy air still made their backs slightly damp.
On the rostrum, there was a row of tables covered with deep blue tablecloths. The microphones were tested, and staff members were moving back and forth making final preparations.
Jiang Chen leaned against the back of his chair, arms resting on his knees, looking at the rostrum with boredom.
Wang Hao leaned over and peeked at his phone, winking. "You've been so mysterious lately. You don't have something going on outside, do you?"
Jiang Chen turned his head to look at him with a faint, emotionless gaze.
Wang Hao immediately lost his nerve and quickly raised his hands in surrender. "Just kidding, bro. Don't look at me like that, I'm scared."
Jiang Chen withdrew his gaze and ignored him.
More and more people gathered on the sports field, the noise surging like a tide.
Several Counselors held sign-in sheets, checking the names of the Department of Finance students one by one in the crowd.
Exactly three o'clock.
A slight screech came from the speakers before they were adjusted to the proper volume.
A woman wearing a white chiffon shirt and black wide-leg pants walked up from the side of the rostrum.
She was in her early thirties, with her long hair loosely tied back and a few stray strands hanging by her ears. Her temperament was composed and efficient.
On her earlobes was a pair of small pearl studs—not flashy, but showing complete refinement.
She walked to the center of the rostrum and leaned over the microphone to test it: "Hello, students. Can you hear me?"
Her voice was clear and steady, carrying a natural sense of command over the venue.
The entire field fell silent instantly, followed by scattered applause.
Wang Hao whispered in Jiang Chen's ear: "Sister-in-law looks way too good today. Her aura is incredible."
Jiang Chen didn't speak, his gaze resting quietly on the rostrum.
Su Wanqing slightly turned her head to look at the script. When she looked up again, her gaze swept across the crowd below.
It paused for a brief moment in Jiang Chen's direction before she quickly withdrew it as if nothing had happened, speaking calmly into the microphone.
"Leaders, teachers, and students of the School of Finance, good afternoon. I am Su Wanqing, a teacher from the Department of Finance, and I will be hosting today's assembly..."
Her tone was steady and her logic clear. With just a few simple opening remarks, she took control of the entire venue.
She spoke about the requirements for academic atmosphere construction in conjunction with the professional characteristics of the Department of Finance. Occasionally, a few lighthearted words dispelled the seriousness of the assembly.
Every gesture exuded the elegance of a mature, sophisticated woman.
"Next, let us welcome the school leaders to the stage with warm applause."
Su Wanqing turned and made an inviting gesture, her movements crisp and generous. Her gaze calmly swept over the audience and happened to meet Jiang Chen's eyes for an instant before indifferently moving away.
Sitting in the corner, Jiang Chen pulled up the hood of his hoodie, leaned back, and watched the woman hosting composedly on stage with narrowed eyes. The corners of his mouth curved up unconsciously.
Wang Hao was still muttering beside him: "Say, if the Counselor made you go up to give a self-reflection and Sister Wanqing called your name in public, wouldn't that scene just explode?"
Jiang Chen still ignored him.
His fingertips lightly tapped his knee. There were no ripples in his eyes, but they held a bit more undetectable laziness.
