11: Chapter 11 Hunting in the Wild
Lin Duo couldn't help but throw herself into his arms, hugging Lin Fan along with their mother.
They were genuinely happy and relieved for Lin Fan.
Lin Fan was stunned for a moment, not expecting them to be so emotional.
He hesitated for a moment, his arms suspended in mid-air, unsure whether to return their embrace.
But this hesitation lasted only for a fleeting moment.
"I am Lin Fan now, and they are my family."
Lin Fan thought to himself.
He immediately stretched out his arms and hugged his mother and sister tightly.
After a good while, the three of them let go of each other and sat back down at the dining table to continue their meal.
"If your father knew about this when he returns, he would definitely be very happy."
"When he gets off work and returns, you must tell him."
Mother suggested.
"Hmm... Actually, I need to go meet someone later, so I might be back a bit late. Could I trouble you to tell Dad?"
Lin Fan asked.
"No problem, leave it to Mom! Eat more, and if it's not enough, just ask for more!"
Mother said with a smile.
The smile on her face was brighter than ever before.
"Alright, Mom!"
"I'm leaving now, I'll try to be back early."
Lin Fan waved at his mother standing at the doorway, slung his old little backpack over his shoulder, and turned to leave home.
"Take care on the road!"
Mother also waved at him, watching his back disappear around the street corner before turning to go back inside.
Lin Fan was wearing a simple but clean old hoodie.
Paired with a pair of brown trousers.
He walked along the street lined with old houses toward the commercial district of Baiyun City.
That was the gathering place for various organizations and shops in Baiyun City.
People could trade goods and find work there.
In fact, Lin Fan had already visited the commercial district once after dinner yesterday.
Because today was the weekend and he didn't need to go to the academy for classes, he had long prepared for today's affairs.
Yesterday.
He wore the omniscient mask and the undying robe, disguising himself as a mysterious person.
He went to the Alliance to register as an explorer.
This Alliance was equivalent to the official organizations in his previous life's world.
Anyone who wanted to leave the city either had to have the status of an explorer or have a legitimate reason.
So-called explorers were people who specialized in hunting magical beasts and entering spatial rifts to slay the demon race.
Spatial rifts were randomly appearing spatial fissures that led to other planes.
From those planes, powerful demon races whose strength far exceeded ordinary magical beasts would emerge.
The reason Lin Fan wanted to become an explorer.
Was partly to complete the magical beast hunting missions issued by the system, and partly to earn money.
He was currently dirt poor and couldn't even afford the basic resources needed for cultivation.
Fortunately, explorer registration with the Alliance was free.
If registration required money.
He probably wouldn't even have the qualifications to sign up.
Of course, earning money was only one reason.
He also learned from the original owner's memories.
His parents owed a debt, and if they couldn't pay it back on time, their house would be repossessed.
His parents had kept this matter hidden from him and his sister, fearing it would affect their studies.
But in reality, the original owner had long ago accidentally seen his mother crying secretly about this, only his mother didn't know.
Besides that.
Staying in the library reading books every day was just too boring; he wanted to find something more exciting to do.
Yesterday.
He successfully registered his explorer status using the alias "Chen Ping".
The staff member had notified him to come and collect his ID card today.
Thoughts returned to the present.
As Lin Fan was about to reach the commercial district, he turned into a quiet alley.
He took out the mask and robe used for disguise from the system space and put them on.
Lin Fan, appearing on the street again.
Wore a white mask on his face and a black robe over his body.
And carried that worn-out little backpack on his back.
Looking both mysterious and eccentric.
"Alright, let's go!"
Lin Fan took a deep breath and strode into the commercial district.
He headed straight for the Alliance's office building.
It was a skyscraper reaching into the clouds, with dozens of floors.
Entering the building.
The lobby on the first floor was crowded, just as lively as when he had come yesterday.
Lin Fan didn't have extra time to wander around and walked straight to the staff member at the counter.
The receptionist behind the counter immediately noticed him and put on a professional smile.
"Hello, sir. Is there anything I can help you with?"
The young receptionist asked in a respectful tone, his gaze lingering on his attire for a few seconds.
He hadn't been working yesterday, so he hadn't met Lin Fan.
"I'm here to collect my explorer ID card."
Lin Fan said concisely, trying to project the stance of an expert.
"Alright, please wait a moment."
The receptionist replied politely.
He immediately picked up the communicator on the desk, made a call, gave a few brief instructions, and hung up.
"Someone will be here shortly to take you there."
The young receptionist smiled at Lin Fan and said.
Lin Fan nodded and walked over to sit on a nearby bench to avoid blocking others from conducting their business.
Not long after, someone walked toward him.
"Hello, Mr. Chen. You've come very early today. Please follow me."
A gentle voice rang out beside him.
The person who arrived was the staff member who had helped Lin Fan with the registration process yesterday.
The alias "Chen Ping" was something Lin Fan had chosen himself.
As for why he chose this name.
It was purely on a whim.
He felt it sounded like the names of protagonists in the fantasy novels he had read in his previous life.
Lin Fan recognized the other person at a glance.
Although he didn't remember the other person's name.
But to avoid exposing his identity, he just nodded as a response.
The staff member saw this, smiled kindly, and didn't mind.
After all, from their contact yesterday, this "Mr. Chen" was someone who didn't like to talk much.
"This way, please."
The staff member made a "please" gesture, his gaze inadvertently sweeping over the old backpack on Lin Fan's back.
"This gentleman is clearly a mage, so why is he carrying such a worn-out backpack?"
The staff member muttered to himself, but still dutifully led the way.
The two left the lively lobby and entered a separate office.
The staff member handed an explorer ID card and an out-of-city exploration permit to Lin Fan.
"Mr. Chen, are you heading out of the city to carry out an exploration mission today?"
The staff member who helped Lin Fan with the paperwork asked casually.
"Hmm."
Lin Fan remained sparing with his words and just nodded.
The staff member's eyes lit up, and his tone became even more enthusiastic.
"That's truly a coincidence!"
"Mr. Chen, since you are an explorer registered at our branch, the Alliance can provide you with several exclusive benefits!"
"If you sell the magical beasts you hunt or the treasures you find to our Alliance, the handling fee will only be 10%, which is half the cost of ordinary explorers!"
"And you can enjoy a 5% discount on anything you purchase in the Alliance's stores!"
The staff member paused.
His gaze fell on Lin Fan's backpack again.
And continued.
