Sensible child

Andrew's home was extremely simple, with very old-fashioned furniture. Some parts of the furniture were already damaged and peeling paint.

If their financial situation allowed it, most people would have thrown away this dilapidated furniture long ago.

In a bedroom on the second floor, Andrew's wife was helping their daughter study. Hearing footsteps behind her, she looked back and saw her husband coming upstairs with a stranger.

Andrew's wife asked, "Andrew, is this your friend? I don't think I've seen him before."

Clearly, Andrew's wife keenly sensed that something was unusual. During the months their daughter had been sick, the couple had already sought help from every relative and friend they could find, and she didn't recall anyone named Wang Xiuyuan.

Wang Xiuyuan's attire and demeanor clearly marked him as a rich man—anyone who wasn't blind could see it immediately. It made sense that Andrew, a poor grunt, shouldn't know such a wealthy person. This anomaly instantly made Andrew's wife wary.

Andrew's wife's question was simple, but at this critical juncture, Andrew genuinely didn't know how to answer.

Saying he was a friend was clearly inappropriate; Andrew knew he wasn't qualified to be friends with such a rich person, and he currently needed a favor from the man before him.

Saying it was any other relationship might upset Wang Xiuyuan, so Andrew was truly stumped by the question.

Wang Xiuyuan naturally noticed Andrew's embarrassment and proactively spoke up to help him out.

"Hello. If all goes as planned, I will be Andrew's boss in the future.

Normally, a specialist would have extended the job offer directly to him, but I unexpectedly learned that your daughter is sick, so I came over to see the little one."

"Hello, please come in, sir. I was just helping the child with her schoolwork."

Hearing that Wang Xiuyuan was offering Andrew a job, Andrew's wife was overjoyed and quickly invited Wang Xiuyuan into the room.

"Sweetheart, quickly say hello to Uncle," Andrew's wife said to their daughter.

"Hello, Uncle." Andrew's daughter was very obedient and immediately greeted Wang Xiuyuan upon hearing her mother.

The little girl was very beautiful, looking much like a young Emma Watson. Her blue eyes were incredibly clear and bright—the kind of pure, innocent eyes Wang Xiuyuan had only ever seen on truly guileless children.

Unfortunately, due to the severe illness, the little girl's complexion was very pale, and her mental state was not great.

"Hello, little angel. I'm glad to see you studying seriously when I arrived. Your life goals must be quite ambitious."

The little girl was very happy to hear Wang Xiuyuan's praise and proudly lifted her head.

"Of course my life goals aren't simple! When I grow up, I want to become a famous doctor or a great lawyer. Mom and Dad said that to achieve that goal, I must have excellent grades, so I have to study very hard."

What a sweet and innocent little girl. Even suffering from such a severe illness, she was still full of hope for the future. Indeed, the adult world is far too filthy.

"Then you must continue to study hard! Of course, you're not the only one who needs to work hard; your mom and dad must work hard alongside you. They need to earn money to pay your tuition.

Medical School and Law School tuition is super expensive. I am a student at Yale University, and when the time comes, I can write you a letter of recommendation for admission. Maybe we can become alumni."

"Really? Uncle, you're amazing! If I can live until then, you must write me a letter of recommendation."

The little girl was very excited, as if she could already see the Yale University acceptance letter waving at her.

But Wang Xiuyuan and the adults present felt terrible upon hearing this. It turned out this seven-year-old girl knew she was seriously ill and knew she might die.

She was just trying hard to pretend she didn't know, so as not to make her mom and dad sad.

Wang Xiuyuan felt a lump in his chest. Although he knew he could help the little girl and that she wouldn't die, he felt inexplicably unhappy, perhaps because his moral standards were relatively high.

"If you can live until then... little one, you know about your illness?"

The little girl froze, realizing she seemed to have let something slip.

However, she reacted quickly. After a few seconds of stunned silence, she immediately put on a smiling face.

"Of course I know! I'm seven years old now, not a kindergartner anymore.

I know I have a very serious illness, and there's a high possibility I might die."

"I also know what death is—it's like Grandma, falling asleep and never waking up again, being put into a dark coffin and buried underground."

Her voice was clear and pleasant, delivering the world's most tragic story in the most innocent tone.

Andrew Smith's wife couldn't help covering her mouth, and tears streamed down her face.

Andrew Smith was no better off; tears were welling up in his eyes, and he tilted his head back, trying hard not to let them fall.

The sensible little girl moved Wang Xiuyuan deeply. He had seen over thirty children like Andrew's daughter recently, but he had never met one as sensible as this girl.

"Since you know you might not live until then, why do you still spend time studying hard? Aren't you worried your efforts are a waste of time?"

"Mom and Dad won't let me go out and play alone, and it's boring at home, so I have to have something to do.

I don't know if I'll live until then, but my mom and dad are trying to find a cure for me, so maybe my effort won't be wasted."

The little girl's positive and optimistic attitude deeply moved everyone present. Wang Xiuyuan was equally touched, feeling that his biggest gain from this trip was this little girl.

"Little one, you will definitely grow up safe and sound and become a doctor or a lawyer. I will write you that recommendation letter when the time comes."

Wang Xiuyuan affectionately ruffled the little girl's hair, then said to Andrew Smith, "Let's go downstairs and discuss matters related to your job, and also your daughter's treatment."

Then Wang Xiuyuan went straight downstairs toward the living room. Andrew Smith, overjoyed, quickly followed behind him.

Speaking of which, Wang Xiuyuan still hadn't gotten used to the behavior of the American people. His action just now—ruffling their daughter's head without the consent of the Andrew Smith couple—could easily get him into serious trouble.

America is a very surreal country; you absolutely cannot view its people and events using normal Huaxia thinking.

This multi-ethnic nation, composed of immigrants, has wildly uneven standards of personal quality, and perverts with corrupted moral standards are as numerous as cattle hair.

Due to concerns about child safety, if the Andrew Smith couple decided to press charges, Wang Xiuyuan's action would definitely lead to a lawsuit, and he would likely lose.

At most, he could rely on his "Money Ability" to indefinitely postpone the lawsuit, effectively bankrupting the Andrew Smith couple.
