Back to school

A luxury motorcade drove through the streets of New Haven City, Connecticut.

In the middle of the motorcade was a black mercedes-benz 450sel sedan, with a black armored Chevrolet Suburban at both the front and rear to ensure the motorcade's security.

This armored Chevrolet Suburban SUV was the model that Wang Xiuyuan's bodyguards had unanimously requested, the reason being that it was sufficiently safe and reliable.

They even hoped that Wang Xiuyuan would replace his own vehicle with an armored model, as this would help them protect his personal safety.

Wang Xiuyuan was not the type to act willfully; he naturally adopted such suggestions that were beneficial to him without hesitation, immediately placing an order with Germany's Mercedes-Benz for two armored mercedes-benz 450sel sedans.

For the same mercedes-benz 450sel sedan, the price difference between the armored and non-armored versions was nearly fivefold.

But Wang Xiuyuan had always believed in a principle: you get what you pay for, and there's always a reason for a high price.

When money is no object, never talk about "cost-effectiveness," because products with high cost-effectiveness will surely cause a major disaster at some unexpected moment in the future; this was a bloody lesson from his past life.

Wherever the luxury motorcade passed, it firmly attracted the gazes of passersby; everyone knew that the owner of such a motorcade must be some extraordinary big shot, so they naturally looked on with curiosity.

Little did they know that the owner of this motorcade was just an ordinary student at Yale University Law School over half a year ago—a Chinese-American student who was often ostracized by his classmates due to skin color issues.

There were many Yale University graduates working on Wall Street. When the news of Wang Xiuyuan making a fortune trading gold futures spread, his background was naturally thoroughly investigated, and the news of him being a current Yale student naturally made its way back to the campus.

In other words, Wang Xiuyuan was now a celebrity at Yale University, a legendary student.

The education industry in America has always been a very profitable business. As a private university, Yale University receives no financial allocations from the American government; its daily operating expenses rely entirely on student tuition, alumni and social donations, and technology patent licensing and transfer fees.

As a top-tier private university in America, the tuition and donations Yale University receives each year are certainly no small sum.

But there is an eternal truth in this world: the more money you make, the faster you spend it.

Therefore, Yale University's financial situation isn't necessarily much better than that of other ordinary private universities; when facing a financial crisis, it will still cut expenses through layoffs just like a corporation.

To maintain a healthy financial status, almost every school in America sets up a specialized department whose sole responsibility is to lobby graduated alumni to donate to the school.

These departments are usually called the Office of Alumni Development or the Office of Alumni Giving, and are sometimes collectively referred to as the Office of Board of Trustees and Alumni Relations.

Alumni who have graduated and are doing well in society are targeted by this department, and then repeatedly harassed by its employees over the phone; wealthier alumni might even be harassed in person.

The entire process can be summarized as low-frequency harassment plus moral kidnapping; the reason the employees of this department do this is to squeeze some donations out of the alumni's pockets.

Otherwise, once the school's finances run into trouble, they have to weather the storm by cutting staff and research projects; if things don't go smoothly, it's easy to fall into a vicious cycle.

Although Wang Xiuyuan hasn't graduated yet, given the volume of wealth he currently possesses, he has absolutely become the number one lobbying target for the Office of Alumni Giving.

The seventeen phone calls and two home visits he received over the past month are the most direct proof.

Even though he had filed for a leave of absence, he was still a student at Yale University after all, and he still wanted to get that diploma.

After all, Yale University is a world-class institution with a plethora of famous alumni; the status of being a Yale alumnus would certainly provide many opportunities in the future.

Spending money to "buy" a diploma is definitely not a losing deal.

The motorcade stopped in front of the Administration Building. After Wang Xiuyuan got out of the car, he was surprised to find the President of Yale University, the Dean of the School of Finance, the Dean of the Law School, and the Head of the Tax Law Department where he was enrolled, all standing in front of the building to welcome him.

Every single one of them was a big shot he couldn't even dream of meeting half a year ago.

Seeing this grand scene, he knew he was definitely going to have to bleed a lot of money today.

'This is America; spending some money to buy a good reputation is a very cost-effective deal. Just bear with it and it'll be over.'

Wang Xiuyuan repeatedly muttered this to himself, forcing a brainwashing session; he had thought only Chinese people were capable of such shameless maneuvers, but now he was finally seeing the world.

The President of Yale University took the initiative to step forward, greeting Wang Xiuyuan and shaking his hand: "Welcome back to campus, Student Wang Xiuyuan. As your alma mater, Yale University is sincerely proud of the great achievements you have made."

As the President of Yale University finished speaking, a large group of deans and department heads immediately chimed in.

"Welcome back to your alma mater, Student Wang Xiuyuan."

"Welcome, Student Wang Xiuyuan."

"Yale University is proud of the achievements you have made."

Every one of these people held a very high social status in America, yet now each of them wore an incredibly enthusiastic smile while flattering Wang Xiuyuan; their purpose was self-evident.

This eerie enthusiasm made Wang Xiuyuan's hair stand on end. As a man of the world, he knew very well in his heart: the more enthusiastic these people were now, the more blood he would have to shed later.

The subsequent process was laughable; Wang Xiuyuan, like an alumnus who had been graduated for years, was surrounded by this large group of school leaders as they toured various important parts of the campus.

'I've only been on leave for half a year! I'm on a leave of absence! What the hell is there to tour?! Which of these places didn't I visit half a year ago?!'

Wang Xiuyuan roared frantically in his mind. If he could, he would even want to crush the heads of these school leaders, because no matter how he thought about it, he couldn't understand the point of a student who had been on leave for half a year touring these places.

But he had to suppress his displeasure and pretend to be full of interest.

These people might not necessarily be able to help him much in the future, but if he offended them, they were more than capable of messing up his affairs.

They were the typical group that was incapable of achieving anything but more than capable of ruining everything.

After the baptism of several hours of walking, Wang Xiuyuan finally arrived at the VIP reception room, surrounded by the group of school leaders. He knew that a grueling and difficult battle was about to begin.

(Brothers, the new book needs your strong support. I don't dare to shamelessly ask for gifts, but I just hope for a wave of free favorites and recommendation votes.

As a struggling author, I make a promise here: starting from the early morning of January 2nd, for every 200 additional recommendation votes, I will add an extra chapter; for every 100 additional monthly tickets, I will add an extra chapter.

My typing speed is quite slow; writing a two-thousand-word chapter plus thinking time takes at least three hours. But to get the votes from you brothers, I want to give it my all. Please, brothers, give me a chance to go all out.)
