5: Chapter 5 Those who reap what they sow
"Look at this, just look at this. I tried talking to you nicely, but you wouldn't listen. You just had to force Manager Guo and the others to use force. Now let's see what you're going to do!"
Sister Hong crossed her arms over her chest and cast a cold glance at the Blockhouse.
"This young punk is really pathetic. When people give you a chance, you should take it. Once the door is broken, let's see if you can still act so cocky!"
Yang Wei added salt to the wound at the perfect moment. He was about to continue mocking when he suddenly felt someone tugging at his clothes from the side.
He saw that it was his young wife, Wang Yalan, who was twenty years his junior.
"What's wrong?"
Wang Yalan frowned deeply, her eyes revealing a hint of worry.
"Yang Wei, I don't think this is a good idea. Let's stop joining in on this mess. Since Chen Ze was able to get this Blockhouse, he might have other skills. We shouldn't completely alienate him."
Yang Wei scoffed upon hearing this and said dismissively, "He's just a little brat who got lucky and randomly rolled a decent Fortress. What kind of skills could he possibly have? Once the door is pried open, I'm going to break his legs!"
Wang Yalan didn't waste any more breath trying to persuade him. She looked at the tall, upright figure on the Blockhouse and felt that the man seemed far too calm. She could only clutch tightly onto Yang Wei's sleeve to keep him from stepping forward.
Meanwhile, Chen Ze watched Security Captain Lei Dayong and the others approach the Blockhouse aggressively, and the lingering bit of pity in his heart completely vanished.
He looked at the group coldly, his eyes filled with indifference.
Since these people didn't know what was good for them and insisted on pushing things this far, he wouldn't be polite any longer.
"You're courting death!"
Chen Ze bent down to pick up the arisaka type 38 rifle. The crisp "click" of him pulling the bolt sounded exceptionally abrupt in the tense atmosphere.
He appeared at the observation window again, the dark muzzle pointed directly at Security Captain Lei Dayong.
Security Captain Lei Dayong and his group were still cursing at Chen Ze. Seeing Chen Ze leave, they had assumed he was afraid, but they hadn't expected the kid to pull out a gun from somewhere, leaving them all stunned in place.
"Holy shit, what is that? A gun? How does this kid have a gun?!"
Looking at that dark muzzle, his face instantly turned pale. His legs felt as if they had been filled with lead, and he didn't dare move another inch.
"Xiao... Xiao Chen, you... don't be impulsive! Quickly put that thing away, someone's going to get killed!"
Security Captain Lei Dayong said tremblingly.
The others around him also noticed the rifle Chen Ze was holding and were immediately terrified, scattering in all directions.
However, the prevalence of guns in Long Country was simply too low. A young man wearing a security uniform was still doubting the authenticity of the gun.
Although he was a little scared inside, he still gathered his courage and shouted.
"Hmph, maybe that's just a toy gun, trying to scare us! Don't let him fool you, everyone!"
"Bang!"
The response was a crisp gunshot.
The bullet shot directly into the man's chest, and bright red blood gushed out, instantly staining his shirt.
"Ah! Ah! Holy shit, I... I've been hit! Help me!"
The young man's pig-like screams echoed all around, completely shattering the last shred of hope in everyone's hearts.
The psychological defenses of the crowd collapsed in an instant, and then endless fear began to spread.
"Ah! Murder!"
"Run! Run! He's a devil!"
The crowd instantly descended into extreme panic. Everyone was in chaos, fleeing in all directions, completely losing the momentum they had earlier when they wanted to seize the Blockhouse.
"Oh my, oh my god, murder!"
Sister Hong was so scared her legs went weak. She scrambled and crawled toward Yang Wei's house, but just as she was about to reach it, the security door slammed shut with a bang, with no intention of waiting for her at all.
"You goddamn Yang Wei, I curse you with impotence for the rest of your life!"
Guo Changzheng had decent physical fitness. He ran several dozen meters in one breath until he hid behind a house. Only then did he lean on his knees with both hands, gasping for breath. His heart was pounding violently, as if it were about to burst out of his chest.
"Damn it! Why does this kid have a gun?!"
Guo Changzheng never expected that a seemingly ordinary young man would not only obtain a top-tier shelter like the Blockhouse but also have a lethal weapon like a gun in his hands.
"Damn! I should have chosen a random Fortress back then!"
He punched the ground, making a thudding sound.
At this moment, Security Captain Lei Dayong finally came to his senses. His face was as pale as paper, his lips were trembling uncontrollably, and he said with a crying tone.
"Manager... Manager Guo, what do we do now? That kid really dared to shoot. I... I was almost scared to death just now."
"Useless trash, shut up!"
Guo Changzheng shouted angrily, and Security Captain Lei Dayong didn't dare to make another sound, though his whole body was still shaking like a sieve.
Guo Changzheng had, after all, been involved with gangs and had some guts. He poked his head out and secretly looked toward the Blockhouse, realizing that Chen Ze didn't seem to be on a killing spree, which made him breathe a long sigh of relief.
"It seems the Blockhouse can't be taken for now!"
Security Captain Lei Dayong's throat moved, and he asked cautiously.
"Then, what do we do? Do we go back to our own homes, or..."
Guo Changzheng frowned, pondered for a moment, and said.
"Going back to our own homes might allow us to survive for a while, but if we want to be superior to others in this Fortress survival world, we must stick together!"
He looked at the Blockhouse, narrowed his eyes, and continued.
"It's true that the kid has a gun, but I don't believe his bullets are infinite. Don't let me catch an opportunity, otherwise... Hmph!"
A flash of ruthlessness crossed Guo Changzheng's eyes, and he clenched his fists.
"Manager Guo, where are we going now?"
Security Captain Lei Dayong asked.
Just then, among the people who had fled here together, a tall, thin young man spoke up.
"Manager Guo, Captain Lei, when I was coming over earlier, I discovered a very large factory building over there. That thing is all steel-structured and looks sturdy!"
Hearing this, Guo Changzheng's eyes lit up instantly, and he hurriedly asked.
"Where? Are there any windows?"
"Hmm... I don't think so, it's just over there!"
Following the direction of the young man's finger, the group immediately saw the vague outline of a massive steel structure that looked two or three stories high.
"Good, let's go there!"
Meanwhile, on Chen Ze's side.
He stood before the high observation window of the Blockhouse, watching the figures of the panicked crowd gradually disappear from his field of vision, and frowned slightly.
"Hiss! That hurts!"
The arisaka type 38 rifle had a shockingly large recoil. Even though Chen Ze had been prepared, as a first-time shooter, his shoulder was still aching from the kick.
With that shot just now, Chen Ze had originally aimed at Security Captain Lei Dayong, but unfortunately, his marksmanship was too poor, and the shot veered off to the side, hitting the lackey instead.
Glancing at the figure below who was unconscious or dead, Chen Ze felt no regret whatsoever.
He knew deeply that in this doomsday world, kindness to the enemy is cruelty to oneself.
If he hadn't fired to intimidate them just now, once these people broke into the Blockhouse, his fate would be no better than that man's.
"You reap what you sow. Since you wanted to rob my Blockhouse, you should have been prepared to be killed in retaliation!"
After muttering to himself, Chen Ze decided to take advantage of the fact that it wasn't completely dark yet to study the system interface again. He had been interrupted by those people earlier, and he hadn't yet fully understood many of the system's functions.
