106: Encountering the enemy
When Su Mianmian heard Shi Xu say that, she nodded.
Shi Xu made sense; there was no rush for supplies, they could collect them slowly later.
The return journey was much easier, at least they wouldn't get lost again.
Just as they reached the cars, Shi Xu raised his hand, signaling them to stop.
Su Mianmian looked at him in confusion, not understanding why he stopped them from going forward when they were already in front of the car.
Just as she was about to ask, a bullet hit the car's windshield.
Su Mianmian hadn't expected them to be targeted, and her heart tightened suddenly.
Shi Xu protected her, and the team scattered, hiding.
This feeling of the enemy being hidden and them being exposed was the most tormenting.
Just as they had found cover, several more bullets came from other directions.
Su Mianmian frowned, wondering what these people wanted to do.
"Mianmian, be careful, there are quite a few enemies."
Shi Xu handed a small pistol to Su Mianmian, and after cautioning her, he aimed in the direction of the recent shots and fired.
A faint "bang" reached Shi Xu's ears, and the corner of his mouth curved slightly; he knew he had hit his target.
Su Mianmian watched Shi Xu hit an enemy, and she too began to search for enemy positions, cautiously probing.
Su Mianmian and Su Jinxuan helped Shi Xu draw fire, while Shi Xu was responsible for striking the enemies.
His eyes were sharp; as soon as he spotted a target, his finger rapidly pressed the trigger, each pull accompanied by a crisp gunshot, suppressing the enemies so they had no power to resist.
Flashes of light flickered in the dark environment, like the breath of a fierce dragon in the night.
The hidden enemies did not give up because of Shi Xu's counterattack; they relentlessly fired at Shi Xu's position.
Bullets whizzed through the air, stirring up dust and small stones, several times narrowly grazing Shi Xu's ear.
Su Mianmian watched Shi Xu, disregarding his position and luring the enemy with his body, her heart tightening more and more.
She looked at Shi Xu; although she believed he wouldn't be in trouble, she was still extremely worried.
Su Mianmian glanced in the direction of the enemy, thinking they needed to end this quickly.
At this moment, the air was filled with tension and the smell of gunpowder; neither side was willing to back down.
As an enemy on one side was taken down, Shi Xu no longer stayed in place; he glanced at Su Mianmian, telling her not to go out, while he, relying on his agile movements and the cover of the terrain and surrounding cars, constantly changed positions.
Su Mianmian watched Shi Xu, who seemed to merge with the night, feeling incredibly nervous.
Fortunately, Ren Tingfeng's people were not to be underestimated; seeing Shi Xu put himself in danger, they began to help him by drawing fire.
Su Mianmian didn't know how many bullets she had used, but the battle finally gradually subsided.
She heard someone shout "retreat" and subconsciously looked up towards the source of the sound, but it was too dark; she only vaguely saw a few figures.
The surroundings gradually returned to calm; Su Mianmian and the others were still hiding behind the cars, not daring to come out easily.
Shi Xu used his mental power to scan and found that the enemies had left.
He walked out and calmly said, "They've gone, you can come out now."
As soon as Su Mianmian heard Shi Xu's voice, she immediately walked towards him.
She couldn't find Shi Xu during the latter part of the battle, so hearing him speak now made her incredibly happy.
"Shi Xu, are you okay?"
Su Mianmian walked up to Shi Xu, anxiously examining him.
Shi Xu shook his head and casually said, "It's nothing serious, just got grazed by some bullets in a few places."
Su Mianmian motioned for him to show her the wounds; seeing this, Shi Xu reluctantly showed her his injured areas.
Shi Xu thought it was nothing, not even needing treatment.
Su Mianmian, however, disagreed; she felt some of the wounds were quite serious.
She used her healing ability to treat some of the more heavily bleeding wounds, leaving the other minor injuries alone.
Others must have been injured too, and she couldn't use all her ability on Shi Xu.
Indeed, when she finished treating Shi Xu and went to check on the others, she found that many people were injured.
Two people had even been hit by several bullets.
Su Mianmian quickly began on-the-spot rescue work.
Fortunately, she had crammed surgical knowledge in her space, otherwise, she really wouldn't have known what to do.
Shi Xu and the others also knew how to remove bullets, and they shared a lot of the work with Su Mianmian.
Despite their quick treatment, several people still died from excessive blood loss.
Su Mianmian looked at the lifeless bodies, feeling a bit sad for a moment.
Although corpses were the most common sight in the apocalypse, Su Mianmian still felt a little sad seeing someone die beside her.
The person who was standing alive beside her just moments ago was now... "Xiao Qi's family are all gone, he was the only one left, and now he's gone too, so he can be reunited with his family."
"Miss Su, you don't need to be too sad, you've already done incredibly well."
"If it weren't for your treatment, many more people would have left us."
Zhang Jianping watched his brothers leave, and his heart ached, but it wasn't Su Mianmian's fault; seeing her sad, he couldn't help but comfort her.
Su Mianmian hadn't expected the usually indifferent Zhang Jianping to comfort her, and she couldn't help but be surprised for a moment.
Zhang Jianping saw Shi Xu approaching, nodded at him, and turned to leave.
Su Mianmian probably needed Shi Xu's comfort more now.
As soon as Zhang Jianping left, Shi Xu came to Su Mianmian's side.
"Mianmian, does it make you sad to see these people leave?"
"You have to get used to it, the apocalypse is just that cruel."
Shi Xu didn't know how to comfort Su Mianmian; he only hoped she could understand this truth sooner.
Su Mianmian shook her head; she wasn't sad, she just felt a little regretful.
"I've seen these things many times, it's just the first time I've encountered someone losing their breath little by little right beside me."
"But I'll get used to it."
"I just hope this kind of thing doesn't happen again in the future."
Su Mianmian sighed, muttering.
Shi Xu couldn't help but smile; how could it not happen?
He couldn't even promise Su Mianmian that wish.
"Mianmian, we should continue our journey."
"There are too many bodies here; there's no guarantee something won't come over."
Shi Xu looked at Su Mianmian, his expression serious.
Su Mianmian nodded; she was just about to ask how to deal with the bodies of their people when she saw someone pouring oil over their bodies, followed by a fire.
Su Mianmian watched their actions, her eyes wide with curiosity.
"Burying them isn't ideal; it wouldn't be good if some animal dug them up and ate them. The best way is to burn them."
Shi Xu looked at Su Mianmian's shocked expression and explained.
Su Mianmian nodded, indicating understanding.
Due to the recent battle, some cars were damaged, so Su Mianmian gave them some new ones.
They saw them and expressed their gratitude.
"Alright, no need for thanks. Some people aren't feeling well yet, we need to get back quickly."
"Don't keep pushing yourselves."
Su Mianmian looked at some of the pale-faced individuals, unable to help but worry.
They nodded, and their companions helped them into the cars first.
Su Mianmian and Shi Xu got into their original car.
Once back in the car, Su Mianmian finally couldn't help but ask who had attacked them.
Shi Xu knew she would ask this question; he shook his head and said, "I don't know yet, but I found this."
After speaking, Shi Xu pulled an insignia from his pocket.
Su Mianmian curiously took it, examining it repeatedly but finding nothing.
She returned the insignia to Shi Xu, shaking her head and saying, "I don't recognize what this is either."
Su Mianmian thought of Ren Tingfeng; she suggested taking it to him to see if he knew anything.
Shi Xu nodded and put the insignia away.
The journey back was smooth, and they arrived downstairs on the second night.
Su Mianmian saw her home after several days away, and her expression couldn't help but show excitement.
"Shi Xu, I feel like it's been so long since I've been back."
"I miss my room so much!"
Su Mianmian looked up towards the seventeenth floor, her face full of longing.
Shi Xu didn't share that sentiment; he looked at the longing Su Mianmian and couldn't help but smile.
