41: Eve of the Apocalypse
"Mianmian, don't you think Su Ran and Li Mei are problematic?"
"The way they looked at your brother, it was obvious, full of shock and fear."
Shi Xu said thoughtfully, resting his chin on his hand.
Su Mianmian nodded in agreement, "I suspect they definitely did something with a guilty conscience."
Shi Xu nodded. He felt they were involved in the poisoning incident.
Xu Qing hadn't found anything during this time, and he felt that perhaps the direction of the investigation was wrong.
Su Jinxuan didn't quite understand what kind of riddle the two of them were speaking in.
"Mianmian, what are you two talking about?"
"Why do I not quite understand?"
Su Jinxuan looked bewildered. Had those people done something he didn't know about?
Shi Xu glanced at Su Mianmian. Seeing this, Su Mianmian explained, "When you were in a coma, someone poisoned you. Shi Xu has been having people investigate this, but they haven't found anything. Seeing them both like this today, we think maybe..."
Su Mianmian didn't finish the rest of her sentence. She believed that with Su Jinxuan's intelligence, he would understand.
Su Jinxuan hadn't expected that mother and daughter to actually want his life. A dangerous smile involuntarily appeared at the corner of his mouth.
"It must be them. That woman was afraid I'd wake up and snatch her son's family fortune."
"New grudges and old hatreds, we'll settle them all after the apocalypse."
Su Jinxuan said angrily.
Su Mianmian thought of the little tyrant from the Su Family, and she couldn't help but sigh and smile helplessly.
That boy was raised by his mother; she was speechless.
As the apocalypse drew closer, all the Shi Family members came to the villa. Butler Li also learned about the impending apocalypse.
Su Jinxuan walked more and more smoothly, which even Su Mianmian couldn't help but admire.
He was so ruthless, so hard on himself that she didn't know what to say.
He wouldn't listen when told to rest for a bit before continuing his practice.
If it weren't for the spirit spring water, he probably wouldn't have had so much stamina.
Su Mianmian shook her head, standing outside the rehabilitation room, her face full of heartache.
Shi Xu walked up beside her at some point, patted her shoulder, and comforted her, "Your brother knows his limits; don't worry."
Su Mianmian nodded. Worry was secondary; more importantly, she just felt bad for him.
"Has the poisoning incident been investigated thoroughly?"
Shi Xu had been investigating this matter with Xu Qing for the past two days, and she hadn't seen him for two days. Now that he was back, she guessed he must have received news.
Shi Xu nodded, "When Su Jinxuan first fell into a coma, Li Mei had Su Ran administer the poison."
Upon hearing this, Su Mianmian looked enlightened.
No wonder Su Ran was so surprised when she saw Su Jinxuan wake up; so that was why.
"This Li Mei is also a ruthless person, directly having her own daughter administer the poison."
"If they were caught, wouldn't Su Ran be arrested?"
Su Mianmian's tone was full of sarcasm, as if mocking Su Ran's position in Li Mei's heart, which was nothing special.
Shi Xu said coldly, "At that time, I only allowed close relatives to visit him. That's probably why she had Su Ran administer the poison."
He hadn't expected it to harm Su Jinxuan.
Shi Xu shook his head, feeling a little guilty.
Su Mianmian seemed to have read Shi Xu's thoughts. She reached out and patted his shoulder, saying, "Don't feel anything. This isn't your fault. If you feel guilty, they'll be happy."
Shi Xu looked up at Su Mianmian, who was watching him with concern, and the corners of his mouth couldn't help but curl into a slight smile.
He nodded and softly said, "Mm."
Just then, Butler Li rushed over.
He saw Shi Xu, as if he had seen his savior.
"Young Master, there's a strange-looking man attacking the villa gate."
"Is he a zombie?"
Butler Li said nervously.
Upon hearing this, Su Mianmian and Shi Xu both ran to the surveillance room.
Su Mianmian's eyes were fixed on the surveillance footage of the gate. She frowned as she watched.
The figure in the footage was no longer human.
His arms had no flesh, only bones remained.
There was a large gash on his face, the wound was rotten, and covered in dense maggots.
Su Mianmian felt her scalp tingle just looking at it.
It was too disgusting.
His eyes were gray, a level zero zombie.
"Shi Xu, how do we handle this?"
"Call the police or...?"
Su Mianmian confirmed the identity of the thing outside, then turned to look at Shi Xu, asking.
Shi Xu nodded and said, "The order hasn't been disrupted yet, and the surveillance hasn't been damaged. Calling the police is the safest decision."
He went out and had Butler Li call the police. When the police arrived, they were fully armed, clearly experienced individuals.
They told Butler Li not to go out during this time, as many such people had already appeared outside.
After Butler Li saw them off, he returned and relayed these words to Shi Xu and Su Mianmian.
Su Mianmian glanced at her phone and found that there were no posts discussing these zombies on social media.
They were probably all censored.
As the day of the apocalypse outbreak drew nearer, Su Mianmian and Shi Xu wanted to go out and check the situation.
Seeing this, Su Jinxuan also wanted to go out with them.
Shi Xu advised him to continue his rehabilitation training first.
Su Jinxuan thought about it and gave up.
When Su Mianmian and Shi Xu went out, there were very few people on the road.
"Shi Xu, let's go check out the nearby supermarket!"
"I think everyone should have gone there."
Su Mianmian turned to look at the scene outside, feeling it was a bit desolate.
Shi Xu grunted in affirmation and drove the car to the side of a large supermarket nearby.
Su Mianmian saw that the area was packed with cars. Many people were rushing with food, and some looked extremely wary.
She got out of the car and randomly stopped a passerby, asking, "Why are you all so nervous? Has something happened?"
The man who was stopped saw that Su Mianmian was a delicate woman, and his wary expression eased quite a bit.
"There are many man-eating monsters appearing outside now, and we don't know when they'll be dealt with. If we don't stock up on food, and the outside gets occupied by monsters, how will we get out?"
"You're a young lady, you should also hurry in and buy some things to stock up!"
"If you go too late, the prices will probably skyrocket!"
The man finished speaking and hurried away.
Su Mianmian got the information she wanted. She opened the car door and got back in.
"Shi Xu, it seems this apocalypse is not quite like the one in my dream."
"In my dream, the apocalypse began with a rain."
"But now..."
Su Mianmian shook her head, a little confused.
Shi Xu thought for a moment and said, "Perhaps it's not different at all. It's just that everything has signs. In your dream, you might not have paid attention to these details."
After hearing what he said, Su Mianmian thought about it and felt it made sense.
If they hadn't come out today, they wouldn't have known that things outside were slowly descending into chaos.
There were still two days until the apocalyptic rain she spoke of, and already many zombies had appeared outside.
Perhaps the rain only accelerated the zombification, and it wasn't that the rain itself was the cause of people turning into zombies.
After Su Mianmian figured this out, she felt much more relaxed.
"Shi Xu, let's go back!"
"Actually, it's quite good this way. When it rains, fewer people should go out in the rain."
"Fewer zombies mean greater hope for humanity."
Su Mianmian said helplessly.
In fact, this was just her hope. The speed of zombification is always fastest at the beginning.
When the two returned to the villa, Father Shi and the others were watching the news.
The news advised people not to panic excessively, to stock up on food and wait at home, as the country had dispatched various forces to deal with these people carrying a "contagious disease."
Upon hearing this, Su Mianmian shook her head helplessly.
"Oh, what is this?"
Mother Shi suddenly asked with curiosity.
