125: Evelyn's "Transgression" and Ethical Dilemma

After the 'one-way mirror' project had been running for several weeks, Evelyn Li found herself sliding into the most tempting and dangerous situation a scientific researcher could encounter—total obsession with the unknown.

The raw data, continuously streaming out of the isolation chamber and filtered through layers, no longer appeared to her as cold numbers and curves, but rather as a window slowly opening into the deepest mysteries of the universe.

She spent almost all of her waking hours at the data analysis center. On the massive circular screen, data streams of different colors poured down like a waterfall, representing synchronized information from dozens of channels, including star map reflection spectra, mineral fluorescence, environmental magnetic fields, and micro-gravitational disturbances.

Evelyn's desk was surrounded by multiple monitors running complex spectral analysis software, custom pattern recognition algorithms, and constantly iterating mathematical models. Like an experienced codebreaker, she attempted to salvage meaningful fragments of information from the vast ocean of cosmic background noise.

At first, progress was slow and frustrating. The data seemed random, fitting the statistical characteristics of thermodynamic noise. But Evelyn did not give up; she adjusted algorithm parameters, tried different filtering methods, and conducted cross-channel correlation analysis.

Finally, in the early hours of one morning, when she focused her attention on an extremely weak, ultra-low-frequency fluorescent fluctuation emitted by a blue mineral, an extremely subtle but highly ordered pattern emerged, ghost-like, under the cover of the noise.

This was not a simple periodic fluctuation, but a complex cluster of fluctuations with self-similarity (fractal characteristics) and non-linear phase locking.

As the analysis deepened, she discovered similar but slightly different collaborative patterns in other minerals and even in specific frequency bands of the star map reflection spectra. These patterns were not constant; they evolved at an extremely slow pace that seemed to follow some higher-order law.

They gave Evelyn a strong intuition—this did not look like a static record, but rather like a continuous, dynamic 'breathing' or 'The Whisper,' originating from some underlying mechanism of the universe itself.

This discovery made her tremble with excitement, and she spent several days without food or sleep, trying to build a mathematical model to describe these 'constant ripple.'

She drew from quantum field theory, complex systems theory, and even some cosmological models that were still in the hypothesis stage. Preliminary fitting results shockingly showed that certain characteristic parameters of these ripples had highly non-trivial mathematical correlations with fundamental physical constants, such as the fine-structure constant and the Planck mass. This seemed to confirm previous conjectures: they were peeking at the 'pulse' of the universe's fundamental rules.

However, as the research deepened, when Evelyn began trying to understand the eerie 'Resonance' phenomenon between these 'constant ripple' and the observer (especially Excellence), a more profound and unsettling inference gradually took shape in her mind.

This inference did not stem from hard evidence in the data itself, but was a logical deduction and terrifying conjecture based on the combination of data patterns, fragmented information from The Foundation's early taboo research archives, and the unique reactions exhibited by Excellence.

She began to suspect that these 'constant ripple' might not merely 'reflect' cosmic laws passively. They themselves might be an extremely weak but definitely existing 'Information Field' or 'Influence Field' capable of bi-directional interaction with the material world (especially highly ordered, complex dissipative systems like the human brain)!

In other words, the 'Resonance' between Excellence and the star map minerals might not just be his brain unilaterally 'receiving' or 'interpreting' some static information. It was more likely that this 'constant ripple' field itself was actively interacting with the conscious state of the contactee in an extremely secretive and subtle way!

This interaction could manifest as: Information Injection: Directly 'writing' or 'resonating' information containing specific patterns into the activity patterns of neurons, which might explain the 'intuition' and 'inspiration' Excellence had that could not be explained by common sense.

State Modulation: Subtly influencing the synchronization of brain waves, the balance of neurotransmitters, and perhaps even shaping long-term thinking tendencies and cognitive patterns. This might explain the changes in conscious state (trance, abnormally heightened focus) that Excellence exhibited when studying the star map.

Potential Activation/Suppression: Directionally enhancing or suppressing certain specific neural functions, which could be an opportunity (such as enhancing a certain cognitive ability) or a huge risk (such as inducing neural disorders or mental issues).

The terrifying aspect of this conjecture was that it completely overturned the significance of the research. They were no longer just archaeologists interpreting an ancient 'cosmic text,' but more like radio operators actively 'tuning in' and 'connecting' to a continuously broadcasting 'cosmic signal station' of unknown origin.

And the intent and long-term effects of the 'program' content sent by this signal station were completely unknown! They might be receiving harmless cosmic background noise, or they might be listening to a treasure trove of knowledge left behind by a highly advanced civilization, or, even more likely, they were unknowingly exposing the brain of Excellence (and indeed all contactees) to an invisible influence field with potential shaping (or even manipulative) power!

Evelyn was broken out in a cold sweat by her own deduction. She recalled the near-'obsessed' state Excellence exhibited when studying the star map deeply, and the uncontrollability of his abilities, which sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. These were signs that this 'Influence Field' was at work.

If this field was directional, who was the 'sender' behind it? What was the purpose? Was it a random natural phenomenon, or something intentional by some intelligent entity? If it was the latter, was its intent benevolent guidance, or malicious experimentation or erosion?

Evelyn fell into extreme conflict and pain. As a scientist, revealing the truth was her vocation; if this conjecture were confirmed, it would be an epoch-making discovery in the history of science. But as one of the guardians of Excellence, she absolutely could not place him in such huge and unknown risk.

After struggling through several sleepless nights, she finally decided that ethical responsibility must take precedence over scientific curiosity.

She compiled her preliminary analysis, the deduction process, and the resulting immense ethical concerns into a strictly worded confidential report with a risk assessment rated as 'extremely high,' and submitted it to Wang Jianguo and the temporary ethics review committee urgently established by 'Homeland.'

The committee meeting was chaired by Wang Jianguo himself, and the atmosphere was as heavy as ice. When Evelyn finished expounding her conjecture, the conference room fell into a long, suffocating silence. Everyone could feel the weight of this conjecture—it touched the most sensitive nerve of scientific exploration: the conflict between unknown risks and the safety of human subjects.

Subsequently, a fierce debate erupted:

The conservatives (represented by the head of the security department and several senior medical experts) were resolute: 'The risks are completely unpredictable, and the potential consequences could be catastrophic! All related research should be stopped immediately! Not only should the 'one-way mirror' project be stopped, but all related items such as the star map and minerals should be placed in the highest-level physical containment, severing all possibility of contact. At the same time, Excellence should be placed under long-term isolation observation to ensure he is not further affected. Do not restart research until absolutely safe and reliable protective technology is developed!' Their viewpoint was based on worst-case assumptions, placing safety above everything else.

The radicals (mainly composed of several top physicists and some young researchers) held the opposite view: 'This is just an unproven conjecture! We cannot give up a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that could change the human cognitive paradigm just because of fear! We should continue research under the premise of strengthening protection and monitoring, focusing on understanding this interaction mechanism and finding ways to interact safely, or even potentially utilizing its positive aspects. Giving up eating for fear of choking is the behavior of a coward!' They emphasized the costs and opportunities of scientific progress.

The centrists (including Evelyn herself and some cautious scientists) proposed a more compromise-oriented plan: 'Immediately suspend in-depth analysis of the active modes of the 'constant ripple,' especially experiments that might enhance its interaction with the observer. Immediately shift the focus of research to two directions: first, develop higher-level information shielding/filtering technology to ensure the safety isolation of the data acquisition process; second, prioritize the development of monitoring equipment and evaluation models capable of real-time monitoring of the biological effects of this potential 'influence field,' establishing finer physiological and psychological baselines for Excellence so that even the smallest abnormal changes can be detected in time. Suspend high-risk exploration until breakthroughs in safety technology are achieved.'

In her speech, Evelyn's voice was slightly hoarse from fatigue and the weight of responsibility, but she was exceptionally firm: 'I desire to know the truth more than anyone. But we must acknowledge that what we are facing may not be neutral knowledge, but something 'active' that can interact with consciousness. Until we are sure we can protect ourselves, blindly going deeper is no different from walking into a minefield blindfolded. The safety and health of Excellence are the unshakeable bottom line for all our actions.'

Wang Jianguo listened quietly to the statements from all sides, his fingers tapping unconsciously on the desktop, his brows locked in a frown. He knew the importance of this decision; it concerned the fate of Excellence, and might also concern the future of 'Homeland' and even a broader scope. Finally, he made a decision that reflected his steady style:

'Adopt the core suggestions of the centrists. Execute the following orders immediately:

Suspend all in-depth analysis and interactive experiments of the 'constant ripple' active modes in the 'one-way mirror' project. Data acquisition will be maintained at a minimum level, but all data streams must pass through the highest-level security filtering, retaining only the parts used for environmental monitoring and basic recording.

Launch the 'shield' sub-project: Concentrate all efforts on prioritizing the research and development of highly effective shielding, attenuation, and filtering technologies against potential 'information fields/influence fields.' The goal is to achieve absolute physical and information isolation between the data acquisition end and the research personnel end.

Launch the 'sentry-7391b' sub-project: The medical and biophysics teams will immediately set to work to establish a set of ultra-fine, 24-hour uninterrupted physiological and psychological multi-modal monitoring systems for Excellence. Not only must conventional indicators be monitored, but attempts must also be made to define and capture specific biomarkers that may be related to the 'influence field.' Establish a dynamic baseline; any minor deviation must trigger an immediate alert.

The Ethics Committee will continuously evaluate risks, and any subsequent research steps must pass its strictest approval.'

This decision meant that the most cutting-edge exploration would temporarily enter a bottleneck period. It did not close the door completely, but it set a very high safety threshold for moving forward. Many researchers felt disappointed, but more understood and supported this decision—in the face of the unknown abyss, caution is not cowardice, but respect for life.

After the resolution, Evelyn felt a sense of relief, despite the mixed feeling of disappointment at the setback in scientific exploration. She devoted all her energy to the new research directions—the 'shield' and 'sentry-7391b' projects.

She led the technical team to study how to use superconducting materials, electromagnetic shielding chambers, quantum teleportation principles (for information isolated transmission), and other technologies to build safer isolation barriers. Together with the medical team, she designed more sensitive sensors and algorithms, trying to capture the most subtle changes in Excellence's brain waves, heart rate variability, and even cellular electrical activity that might be caused by external fields.

Her role shifted from a scientist of frontier exploration to more of a vigilant guardian. She paid closer attention to every detail of Excellence, not just through cold data, but also through daily observation. She would pay attention to the erratic changes in his mood, the quality of his sleep, and even whether the thinking tendencies revealed in his 'hand-crafted' inventions were abnormal.

One late night, Evelyn was still on duty at the 'sentry-7391b' monitoring center. On the massive screen, real-time data from Excellence's bedroom was displayed: brain waves stable, heart rate regular, breathing long and steady. He was immersed in carefree sleep.

Evelyn looked at the curve representing the calm consciousness of Excellence, her heart filled with mixed emotions. The temptation of the boundaries of science is infinite, but the bottom line of ethics is like a lighthouse, guiding one not to get lost. She whispered in her heart, as if declaring to Excellence, and also to that unknown mystery:

'No matter what, your safety comes first. We can search for the truth slowly, but it must never be at the cost of your health.'

Scientific exploration and ethical guardianship were struggling to find a balance in this deep valley. The road ahead might be long, but the original intention of guardianship remained steadfast.
