242: The core's discovery and the lament of the "heart of the web"
The Ark tore through the last layer of turbulent spatio-temporal curtain, plunging headfirst into the eye of the storm, even as the scorch mark of the extinguished decoy signal was still seared into their retinas.
That instant of “sudden clarity” brought not relief, but deeper suffocation.
This place was like the central tomb chamber of the Singularity Corridor, an endless labyrinth of chaos. Violent spatio-temporal currents strangely subsided and calmed here, forming a relatively static void about several hundred kilometers in diameter. But this “stillness” was not peace; it was the dead silence after exhaustion, like a battlefield where both sides were locked in a stalemate after a fierce struggle.
In the center of the void, that thing floated.
In the initial moment, no one could accurately say what they saw. It was neither any known celestial body nor an artificial construct. It was enormous—about ten times the size of the Ark, irregular oblate spheroid in shape, more akin to a slumbering giant egg. Its 'body' was composed of countless, pure, chillingly orderly light bands. These light bands were not static; they slowly flowed, intertwined, and pulsed with an incredibly complex, exquisite, and mathematically beautiful rhythm. The light was pure “white,” yet not dazzling, but a soft, all-encompassing glow, as if containing all spectrums within, yet harmoniously unified. With each pulse, the light bands alternated between bright and dim, like breathing, emitting layers of transparent energy ripples, within which incomprehensible geometric symbols fleetingly appeared.
This was the legendary core control node of The Weave system, the “Coordinating Heart.” It was the central processing unit of the entire universe's orderly immune system, the ultimate creation forged by that ancient civilization, pouring all its wisdom and power into it. Merely gazing upon it, one could feel a solemnity and sacredness that transcended civilization, originating from the very beginning of the universe.
However, this sacred “Heart” was now nailed to a cosmic cross, suffering the most blasphemous slow torture.
From the darkness of the surrounding void, countless thick, hideous, dark-red Entropy Tentacles pierced out. Unlike the relatively slender tentacles encountered in the periphery, the thinnest of these tentacles were as thick as a battleship's main cannon. Their surfaces were no longer translucent energy states but had condensed into a nauseating texture resembling a mixture of decaying flesh and molten metal, covered with pulsating dark-red blood vessel networks. They were like the most greedy parasitic vines, or like Níðhöggr, the venomous dragon from mythology coiling around the World Tree, tightly wrapping and constricting the light egg, their tips deeply piercing into the pure light bands.
The points of penetration were scenes of tragic battle. Pure white light of order and dark red power of chaos clashed fiercely, erupting not in sparks, but in a more fundamental “dissolution” and “annihilation.” At the edges where light and dark met, space exhibited brittle, glass-like cracks, and broken information debris (like fragments of collapsing reality) continuously peeled off and scattered like black snowflakes. The light egg's pulsation became heavy and difficult, each “breath” accompanied by violent tremors, its light flickering uncertainly, like a candle in the wind.
A grand, ancient “will,” permeated with endless weariness and unyielding persistence, filled the entire space like background radiation. It was not language, but an imagery directly impacting perception: the solitude of guarding for billions of years, the intense pain of being continuously gnawed, the heavy responsibility of maintaining the universe's structure from collapsing, and... a faint but never extinguished hope for “those who come after.” This was The Weave system itself, emitting a silent lament and resistance amidst the prolonged erosion.
And the perpetrator was perched directly above the light egg.
A mass of “darkness” floated there. But the word “darkness” was far from enough to describe it. It was not a lack of light, but a festering wound of “existence” itself, a void-like abscess left after the collapse of rules, an informational black hole that devoured all meaning and structure. Any detection beam fired at it returned not “no signal,” but thoroughly illogical and self-contradictory data streams. To the naked eye, it was not pure black, but a constantly shifting, foul vortex that absorbed and distorted all surrounding light and concepts, as if countless pupil-less eyes were opening and closing in its depths.
It had no fixed form, only a chaotic aggregate that constantly wriggled, expanded, and contracted. However, a cold, indifferent, and utterly greedy will, like absolute zero radiation, emanated from its invisible “core,” enveloping everything. It resembled an immense, incredibly ugly spider, sprawled on its self-woven, invisible web of chaotic rules, plunging its thickest “proboscis”—a tentacle more solid than the other Entropy Tentacles, its tip continuously dripping foul dark-red liquid (substantiated high-density chaotic information)—deep into the most intensely pulsating core region of the Coordinating Heart, continuously sucking the power of order while injecting its own chaotic venom.
“We...” a young researcher in charge of monitoring energy readings, his voice as dry as sandpaper, “Did we come too late? It... it's already been half-eaten...”
The bridge was dead silent, save for the hum of instruments and people's suppressed breathing. The scene before them surpassed any pre-war briefing or the most pessimistic imagination. This was not a battlefield where two armies confronted each other, but a slow, cruel vivisection that had lasted for untold millennia.
“No,” Excellence's voice broke the silence. It wasn't loud, but like a tempered blade, it cut through the spreading despair. “We're just in time.”
He stood before the main screen, his back straight as a spear. The screen's light reflected on his face, half the pure white struggle of the Coordinating Heart, half the murky shadow of the 'Entropy' entity. There was no fear in his eyes, nor the recklessness of a greenhorn, only an extreme, settled cold fury, and the focus of a hunter seeing its prey finally fully expose its weakness.
“Look at its 'proboscis,' the depth and angle of penetration, and the distribution of the surrounding Entropy Tentacles.” Excellence's finger traced lines on the tactical display, bringing up a magnified local view. “It's in a state of deep 'feeding' and 'transformation.' Just like a beast biting a prey's throat and swallowing with all its might, this is when it's most focused and 'immersed.' All its strength and attention are concentrated on digestion; its reaction to the surrounding environment... will be relatively a half-beat slower. This half-beat,” he paused, his gaze sweeping over Su Mu and Evelyn's projections, “is our only chance.”
“What are you going to do?” Su Mu asked. She had entered an absolutely calm, pre-combat state, her voice like a taut bowstring.
“Perform emergency surgery on it,” Excellence stared at the mass of darkness, his gaze sharp enough to cut through space. “First step, pull out that most disgusting 'infusion tube.'”
The command was swiftly given.
“Evelyn, immediately begin final connection preparations! Scan the Coordinating Heart, find the most stable access point with the least contamination of its orderly structure, and aim all the beacon keys and repair terminals we brought at it! Once the access protocol is ready, await my command, and establish a secure channel at the first opportunity!”
“Understood.” Evelyn's projection glowed brightly, almost dyeing half the bridge blue. She began to mobilize all computational resources with the highest authority, analyzing the flow patterns of the countless light bands on the surface of the massive light egg, searching for the theoretically existing “safe door.”
“Su Mu, organize full ship defense! Abandon stealth, activate all shields and weapon systems! Establish a 360-degree circular defensive perimeter with the ship as the core. Engineering team, prioritize energy supply and shield generators! Once we start, it'll be like lighting a match next to a powder keg; it will go mad.”
“Already doing it.” Su Mu's hands moved rapidly across the control panel, and the defense status and weapon online status of various areas of the ship cascaded across her screen. Short, powerful confirmation replies came through the security force's channel. On the ship's hull, long-dormant turrets began to rotate silently, and shield generators emitted a low hum of charging.
Just as the Ark disengaged stealth and its energy signature suddenly increased—
The mass of darkness perched above the light egg rippled ever so slightly.
As if a sleeping abyss had been startled by a pebble, a cold, indifferent, yet indescribably playful will—like a higher being looking down on a tiny insect—like an invisible, intangible, yet immensely heavy cold current, penetrated unimpeded through the ship's hull, shields, and even everyone's skulls, directly “pouring” into the depths of everyone's consciousness:
【...Interesting insects...crawled in...from the edge...the trick just now...was somewhat admirable... (the intent mixed with a hint of 'appreciation' after analyzing the 'decoy' and more mockery)...but the stage...has closed...here...only...the final feast remains...become...new...cornerstones...】
It was not a sound, but a direct projection of concept; understanding it meant simultaneously bearing the cold weight and all-consuming hunger it contained.
Almost in the same millisecond that this thought swept through, the battle situation changed drastically!
The thick Entropy Tentacles, which had been tightly wrapped around the “Coordinating Heart,” focused on erosion and absorption, instantly “activated” like a neural network receiving a supreme command! Hundreds of more flexible and rapid dark red branches split off and shot out from the main tentacles like an enraged swarm of cobras, lunging from every direction at a speed far exceeding the Ark's maneuverability! They were no longer focused on “feeding,” but carried a pure will to destroy, their tips condensing terrifying spatial collapse energy.
Simultaneously, ripples suddenly appeared in the seemingly empty void all around. Twisted figures emerged—the very Entropy Devourers encountered before, but their numbers were more than tenfold! Furthermore, there were more unspeakable monsters: “Shadow Beasts” formed from solidified shadows and chaotic geometries; “Noise Aggregates” that constantly shifted form and emitted shrieks of mental contamination; and even several remnants of warships, clearly bearing the characteristics of different civilizations but completely twisted and corrupted by chaos, driven like zombies by unseen forces, their empty muzzles aimed at the Ark.
The tidal wave of enemies instantly submerged the small Ark in a desperate offensive.
"Open fire! All weapons, free shot! Focus shield energy on the impact side! Buy Evelyn every second!" Su Mu's roar exploded through the communication channel, overriding the chill that rose in her heart.
In an instant, the Ark transformed into a raging steel hedgehog.
The main cannons' thick ion beams tore through the darkness, the secondary cannons wove a dense net of intercepting fire, and the close-in defense systems sprayed scorching metallic streams and directed energy pulses. Orderly energy violently collided with chaotic constructs, detonating silent yet dazzling (or foul) energy fireworks around the ship. When hit, the Entropy Tentacles would spasm and break, splattering foul, dark red "blood," but more tentacles rushed forward relentlessly. The Entropy Devourers charged through the barrage, striking the shields with their twisted limbs and contaminating energy fields, causing the shield readings to plummet. Shadow Beastss darted through the gaps in the firepower, and the shrieks of the Noise Aggregates attempted to penetrate the ship's mental defenses.
The flashes of explosions, the brilliance of energy annihilation, the ripples of shield overload, the grating friction of metal being eroded and torn (conducted through the structure)... all sensory information mixed into a cruel battlefield symphony.
Excellence, however, seemed oblivious to the explosive defensive battle raging around him.
He closed his eyes, shutting out visual interference, and poured the entirety of his mental power, willpower, and even the weight of his soul into a different dimension of "aiming."
His "target" was not the dark entity itself—that was too distant, too vast, and beyond his current ability to shake. His target was the connection point between the thickest, deepest-piercing core Entropy Tentacle, which clearly bore the main "sucking" function, and the "Coordinating Heart."
It wasn't a clash of energy. In a head-on confrontation, his power was like a Firefly compared to the full moon before the entity of "Entropy." What he had to do was "Authority Override" and "Order Resonance."
Inside him, the power of the five activated beacons (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Zeta) operated in an unprecedentedly coordinated manner. They were no longer just energy sources, but transformed into five distinct yet identically sourced "keys." The Zeta beacon provided the highest authority The Weave identification code and connection protocol; the Gamma beacon provided microscopic insight and precise manipulation of matter and energy structures; the Beta beacon reinforced mental linking and intention penetration; the Delta beacon granted the characteristics of concealment and infiltration, which were now used in reverse to "inject" the order command into the chaotic defenses; and the Alpha beacon, the initial and purest source of order, served as the foundation and resonator for all powers.
At the same time, he fully sensed the faint yet tenacious order framework information emanating from the tragic pulsation of the "Coordinating Heart." Although the framework was severely damaged, its underlying logic and its steadfast "meaning of existence" were still stubbornly running. What he had to do was make the command he issued resonate at the deepest level with this framework, allowing his authority as a "latecomer" to be recognized by the system as a "highest priority administrator command."
Time was stretched and twisted amidst the fierce offense and defense.
The veins on Excellence's forehead bulged, and cold sweat instantly soaked his temples and back. Performing such subtle, multiple operations simultaneously taxed him far beyond any previous attempt. The external roar of cannons, shield alarms, and casualty reports (though Su Mu tried to filter them, emergency information still seeped into his perception) became distracting noise that had to be forcefully excluded.
Three seconds.
Five seconds.
He found it—the most vulnerable "Logic Node" at the connection point where order and chaos fiercely intertwined.
He opened his eyes, and five-colored radiance flowed within his pupils, finally converging into a beam of pure white light, condensed to the extreme and containing no impurities. This light did not shoot from his eyes; rather, his entire being seemed to have become the carrier of the command. He pressed his hands forward virtually, not toward the control panel, but toward that invisible, conceptual battlefield.
There was no incantation, only the driving force of his core will, mixed with the full authority of the five beacons, transforming into a silent energy beam containing infinite information and mandatory commands, crossing the void and shooting with absolute precision toward that fatal connection point!
"—Disconnect!"
The pure white beam plunged into the center of the vortex where dark red and pure white frantically intertwined.
In that instant, everything froze around the connection point.
The surging chaotic energy, the pulsating light of order, and even the subtle fluctuations of the surrounding space experienced an extremely brief "freeze frame." It was as if the universe had hit the pause button.
Immediately afterward, an indescribable upheaval occurred.
The largest core Entropy Tentacle suddenly went rigid, like a giant python struck by high-voltage electricity, and then began to wildly spasm and twitch! The dark red veins constituting its surface flickered erratically, and a nerve-grating "sound" (acting directly on perception), as if billions of pieces of glass were shattering simultaneously, emanated from within. The section piercing the "Coordinating Heart" began to be violently impacted by an overwhelming, repulsive force of order that erupted from within the light-egg!
The "Coordinating Heart" itself seemed to be jolted awake from a long nightmare by a powerful stimulant! Its heavy, labored pulsation suddenly became vigorous and surging! Countless light bands shone and flowed with unprecedented brightness, and rings of pure order ripples, carrying the will to repair, burst forth from its core!
[—?!]
The entrenched darkness emitted a clearly discernible mental fluctuation for the first time, one that was neither mockery nor indifference! That fluctuation was filled with the fury of interrupted pleasure, the astonishment of being stung by an ant, and... an extremely subtle yet genuine feedback of pain, as if it had been "burned"!
The core connection was forcibly and violently severed!
Although this interruption might only last for a few short seconds—the entity of "Entropy" was too immense, and it would soon stabilize the connection again, or even launch a fiercer counterattack—these few seconds were the only window Excellence had fought for with all his strength!
"Evelyn!!!"
Almost simultaneously with Excellence's shout (his throat hoarse from overload), Evelyn, who had already run the connection program to the final moment and was only awaiting the trigger signal, pressed the invisible key.
Below the Ark's bow, a specially reinforced energy projection port opened. A pure white energy channel, far more stable and wider than the beam Excellence had just emitted, and internally flowing with countless encrypted data streams, connected steadily like a raised rainbow bridge to a relatively intact Light Band Node on the surface of the "Coordinating Heart" that Evelyn had just marked.
The channel was established! The secure link, protected by the Coordinating Heart's own order field and the full power of the Ark, and intended for transmitting repair commands and energy, was finally opened!
The final mission to repair The Weave and purge the Entropy contamination, after paying a heavy price and crossing endless perils, was officially initiated at the core of this cosmic scar!
However, this also completely ignited the powder keg.
"Entropy," whose feeding was forcibly interrupted and whose core tentacle was wounded, the dark entity itself, roared silently across the entire void like an utterly enraged primordial beast! Its "body" violently swelled and writhed, and the cold malice and will to destroy it radiated intensified tenfold! All the Entropy Tentacles, Entropy Devourers, Shadow Beastss, Noise Aggregates... every chaotic construct attacking the Ark instantly descended into total madness, and the intensity of the offensive instantly skyrocketed!
More terrifyingly, the dark entity began to slowly "turn," and its all-consuming "attention," like a cosmic-scale searchlight, finally locked completely and firmly onto the Ark, and onto that tiny "bug" on the bridge who had made it feel "pain" for the first time—Excellence.
The true, unadorned decisive battle against the ultimate evil of the universe erupted at this very moment!
