272: Return trip, report, and "tuition" bill

The ranger dragged its low engine hum and the faint energy traces of a near-death experience, slowly entering the familiar dock of the Homeland base, which glowed with soft indicator lights. The airtight gates closed silently behind the ship, completely shutting out the cold, dead silence of deep space. As soon as the hull stabilized and the landing struts touched the ground with a faint hiss, Su Mu, who had been waiting by the berth, rushed up with the medical team.

"Don't move! Get checked first!" Su Mu's voice carried an unquestionable determination, and even a slight tremor; her eyes betrayed a lingering fear that she was trying hard to hide. She practically "escorted" Excellence, whose face was still pale and whose steps were slightly unsteady, to the medical center, giving him absolutely no chance to argue or show that he was "fine."

Excellence smiled bitterly and obediently allowed himself to be pressed into the medical pod. He knew Su Mu was truly terrified this time. As for himself, after escaping the star region shrouded in the pressure of "Xuan," his long-tensed nerves suddenly relaxed, and exhaustion surged like a tide; he indeed needed a comprehensive check-up.

On the other side, Evelyn and White Elder immediately threw themselves into intense work. They directed the technical team to perform multiple backups and preliminary classification of all data recorded on the ranger—from the initial encounter with "Xuan," to the activation of The Council's blue force field, the standoff, and until "Xuan" departed. In particular, the energy fluctuation spectrums involving high-dimensional rule conflicts captured by the ranger's external sensors under extreme conditions, spatial curvature distortion data, and the extremely subtle traces of information structure disturbance generated when the blue force field and the pure white light of Order annihilated each other were all treated as the highest priority research samples.

Inside the medical pod, soft white light scanned Excellence's entire body, and various probes worked silently. He lay on the examination bed, watching the data projections flowing on the ceiling, feeling the slight tingling sensation as his body was scanned by the instruments, but his thoughts drifted involuntarily back to that frozen starry sky. He recalled "Xuan's" deep eyes that contained no emotion, and that pure white purifying light which looked gentle but could actually obliterate all "heterogeneity"... The lingering burning pain from the heart-clearing pendant on his chest seemed to be acting up again.

The test results came out quickly.

"All physiological indicators are normal, no internal injuries, no organ function damage, good cellular activity," the medical AI reported in a flat electronic voice. "Mental fluctuation detection shows signs of moderate fatigue and mental exhaustion. It is recommended to rest fully and undergo 'deep consciousness relaxation' therapy. Full recovery is expected within 72 hours. Special energy residue scan... no traces of persistent contamination or erosion from high-level powers such as 'Order' or 'Chaos' were found. The structure of the heart-clearing pendant is intact, with slight energy consumption (approx. 3%), and it has entered automatic recharging mode."

Excellence breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed The Council's blue force field was indeed effective; it had completely blocked the aftermath of "Xuan's" terrifying purifying power, preventing even the slightest bit of bad stuff from touching him.

However, Evelyn's voice immediately came through the communicator, carrying a hint of gravity and confusion: "Excellence, there is a situation. Deep in the skin tissue on your chest, that conceptual mark left by the Lord of the Grand Feast... when we checked the changes in your overall energy field during the appearance of 'Xuan' and the activation of The Council's force field, we found that it had an extremely weak but definitely existing reaction."

The screen of the medical pod switched to an enlarged scan map. At a position slightly to the left of Excellence's heart, a "dot" smaller than a needle point, displaying an eerie, cloyingly sweet pink halo, was highlighted. Next to it were several fluctuation curves.

"Look here," Evelyn explained, "At the moment 'Xuan' descended and released its pressure (timestamp T1), the energy reading of this mark had an instantaneous rise of about 0.0007%; when The Council's blue force field erupted and confronted 'Xuan's' pure white light (T2-T3 interval), its reading showed a continuous, weak but steady climb, rising by a total of about 0.0021%; after 'Xuan' left and the force field retracted (T4), the reading slowly fell back, but it is currently still about 0.003% higher than the baseline before the event."

She paused, her tone even more puzzled: "This kind of reaction... it doesn't look like it was activated, nor does it look like it was suppressed. It's more like a... 'bystander' that, upon perceiving the intense collision of two forces of Order/rules that both belong to an extremely high level but have vastly different natures, produced a kind of... weak 'ripple' of being 'interested' or 'disturbed'? Is it 'watching the show'?"

Excellence subconsciously touched that spot on his chest. The skin was smooth, with no sensation of a foreign object, but it seemed... really a tiny bit "warmer" than usual. It was hard to describe, more like a psychological effect. "What is it happy about? Watching me, 'Xuan,' and The Council immortals fight, and finding it entertaining? Or could it be that this kind of collision of high-level powers has some kind of... 'nourishing' effect on something at the 'conceptual' level like it?"

"Don't guess blindly!" Su Mu's voice cut in, carrying obvious anxiety and annoyance. "This thing looks ominous! Last time it was 'temptation,' this time it's 'watching the show'... who knows what it will do next? We must find a way to get rid of it!"

White Elder's aged but steady voice also came through the communication channel: "This mark is rooted at the conceptual level and is deeply bound to the existence of young friend Excellence; it cannot be removed by ordinary energy or physical means. Its level is so high that it likely far exceeds our current understanding. Forcing a removal would carry unpredictable risks, and we might suffer the consequences. Currently, it shows no signs of active harm; it is more like a... 'observation anchor' or a 'potential interference channel.' We can only increase our vigilance, solidify young friend Excellence's own willpower and foundation of Order, and make it difficult for external evils to take advantage. The heart-clearing pendant also has a suppressive effect on this; it must never be removed."

"That's all we can do," Evelyn sighed. "I will continue to monitor the energy changes of this mark and build a more precise mathematical model, hoping to find its activity patterns or trigger conditions."

Excellence was open-minded about it: "If you have too many lice, you don't itch; if you have too many debts, you don't worry. Anyway, 'Xuan' and The Council are already eyeing me, so one more like the Lord of the Grand Feast won't make a difference. As long as it doesn't suddenly jump out and invite me to eat 'cake,' I'll just leave it be for now."

The examination was over, and Excellence was allowed to leave the medical pod, but he was strictly ordered by Su Mu to return to his dormitory to rest and was not allowed to go to the laboratory or training ground to mess around. Excellence did indeed feel physically and mentally exhausted, so he did not object.

After resting for a few hours and feeling that his spirits had recovered quite a bit, Excellence habitually opened his personal terminal and logged into the temporary "Observer" account opened by the sentry-7391b Node. He was thinking about the 500-point mission reward and wondering what good things he could exchange for.

As soon as the account interface refreshed, the eye-catching "500" contribution point balance hadn't let him be happy for more than a few seconds before a scarlet, constantly flashing "Pending Items" notification box popped up, taking up almost half the screen!

"Important Notice: Resource Consumption and Emergency Response Compensation Settlement List (Reference: INC-114514-7391B)"

Excellence's heart skipped a beat, and he had an ominous premonition. He clicked on the list, and lines of entries that were extremely clear, rigorously worded, and carried The Council's characteristic cold style came into view:

"To: Special Potential Observer 'Excellence' (Reference: HJ-AT-0047) and affiliated civilization 'Homeland':"

"In accordance with the 'Pan-Dimensional Civilization Observation and Mediation Council Seventh Sub-bureau Public Resource Use and Management Regulations,' the 'Observer Temporary Protection Agreement Implementation Rules,' and the 'High-Dimensional Threat Event Emergency Response Cost Sharing Measures (Trial),' we are now conducting a cost accounting and apportionment for the emergency response measures initiated and resources consumed by the Seventh Sub-bureau during the unauthorized interference event involving the high-threat unidentified entity 'Xuan' (UO-001) that occurred on the edge of the K-3317 star region on [Date]. The relevant costs must be borne by the protected party (i.e., the 'Homeland' civilization and Observer 'Excellence')."

Below is a detailed cost breakdown:

"Item 1: Emergency Protocol Activation and Maintenance Fee."

"Activation of 'Observer Temporary Protection Agreement (Class A)' once. This agreement utilized the strategic reserve energy unit of the jurisdiction to instantly construct a high-intensity rule protection field. Energy consumed: 3.7 standard units."

"During the maintenance of the agreement (total 14.3 seconds), dynamic stabilization and rule confrontation calculations were performed on the protection field, consuming central processor resources."

"Converted contribution points: 1000 points."

"Item 2: High-Dimensional Rule Confrontation and Conflict Resolution Fee."

"In response to 'Xuan's' 'Forced Order Purification' behavior, a 'High-Dimensional Rule Confrontation Field (Type III)' was initiated and maintained to resist and offset it. This field required the consumption of a specialized high-stability energy matrix and occupied a large amount of high-dimensional rule calculation array resources."

"During the operation of the force field, real-time repairs and stabilization were performed on the spacetime structure disturbances generated by the rule conflict between the two parties to avoid secondary disasters."

"Converted contribution points: 2500 points."

"Item 3: Event Impact Control and Aftermath Fee."

"To prevent the leakage of event information and the spread of high-dimensional rule fluctuations, a temporary 'Information Shielding' and 'Rule Stabilization Field' were initiated for the star region within a 1-light-year radius of the incident location. This measure consumed a large amount of wide-area energy projection and information processing resources."

"Conducted collective 'Cognitive Soothing' and 'Navigation Reset' for low-level information lifeforms (such as Nebula Jellyfish) that may have been disturbed."

"Converted contribution points: 800 points."

"Item 4: Administrative Handling and Follow-up Negotiation Fee."

"Multi-dimensional recording, evidence solidification, and re-evaluation of the threat level for 'Xuan's' violation, and generation of an official incident report."

"Initiated emergency diplomatic communication channels with 'The Ring of Order' (remnants) to negotiate and issue warnings regarding this event."

"Updated Observer 'Excellence's' risk profile and protection plan."

"Converted contribution points: 500 points."

"Item 5: Observer Post-battle Assessment and Care Fee."

"Conducted a comprehensive post-battle physical and mental state scan assessment for Observer 'Excellence' (completed at the medical center)."

"Based on the assessment results, generated personalized recovery recommendations and follow-up observation plans."

"Converted contribution points: 200 points."

"Total cost: 5000 contribution points."

"Reward obtained for your current guidance mission (001): 500 contribution points."

"Current account balance: 500 contribution points."

"Outstanding debt: 4500 contribution points."

There were a few lines of small print below:

"Repayment deadline: Please pay off the full debt within 30 standard days, or negotiate a feasible repayment/installment plan with the Seventh Sub-bureau Resource Management Department."

"Overdue consequences: If not processed within the deadline, a late fee of 0.5% of the total debt will be charged daily starting from the first day of delinquency. At the same time, some of your 'Observer' permissions may be temporarily frozen, eligibility to accept new guidance missions will be suspended, and the approval process for applying for any form of resources (including technical consultation, intelligence subscription, etc.) through The Council channels will be significantly extended or directly rejected."

At the end of the list, a "Installment Payment Calculator (up to 60 installments)" link was thoughtfully attached, along with a "Disagree with the fees? Click here to appeal" button.

Excellence stared at the screen, his eyes slowly widening, and his mouth opening unconsciously. He rubbed his eyes and looked again. The number was correct; it was five thousand, not five hundred.

"This..." He felt his throat go a bit dry.

Su Mu happened to walk in with a cup of nutrient solution. Seeing him staring blankly at the screen, she leaned over to look, and instantly froze as well.

"Five... five thousand points?!" Su Mu's voice shot up, filled with disbelief. "We fought with our lives on the line and almost died to earn five hundred! They... they just shone that blue light, blocked for a moment, and want five thousand?! This, this is simply robbery! No, even robbery isn't this ruthless! This is darker than the usury and predatory loans in the legends of ancient Earth!"

Her face was flushed with anger, and her chest heaved violently; she looked like she wanted to rush to that silver Node immediately and demand an explanation.

"Clearly priced, with a clear process," the White Elder's voice arrived from outside the door at the right moment.

The old man walked in slowly, showing no surprise on his face, as if he had expected it all along.

"The Council's action, while seemingly heartless, is actually logically sound.

Its protection is not a free handout, but a service based on rules and contracts.

If not for its force field this time, let alone Excellence, even the 'ranger' and everyone on board would likely no longer exist.

These 5,000 contribution points buy the lives of us all and the chance for our civilization to continue.

Judging by the results, the cost... is not unacceptable."

He stroked his beard, his gaze deep: "It's just that this amount is truly not something we can easily afford at the moment.

This 'contribution point' system is likely also one of the important means by which The Council regulates, screens, and even 'binds' civilizations and individuals like us."

"You're right, senior," Evelyn also walked in, holding a data pad.

She had clearly already seen the bill, and her expression was still calm: "This is essentially a 'protection fee' or, in other words, an 'emergency rescue service fee.'

The Council listed a detailed cost breakdown; although we cannot verify its authenticity, at least it is 'transparent' in form.

Moreover, they provided options for installments and appeals, not killing us off in one blow, which shows they still left some room for maneuver.

What we need to do now is not complain, but figure out how to resolve this debt."

She looked at Excellence: "Let's do installments.

It's the only choice.

See how many installments we can stretch it to, how much to pay each period, and calculate whether we can cover the monthly payments by completing tasks in the future."

Excellence had already recovered from his initial shock.

Hearing this, he gave a wry smile and clicked on the 'installment calculator.'

He entered the debt of 4,500 points and selected the maximum installment period of 60 months (5 years).

The calculator quickly provided the results:

"Installment plan: 60 periods."

"Principal to be repaid per period: 75 contribution points."

"Estimated total interest (calculated at 18% annual compound interest): approximately 1,218 contribution points."

"Total repayment amount per period (including principal and interest): approximately 95.3 contribution points."

"Due date for the first repayment: 30 days later."

"I have to pay nearly a hundred points for the first installment..." Excellence rubbed his chin.

"In other words, I have to at least ensure I complete one decent guidance task every month just to barely cover the monthly payment, and that's assuming I don't make mistakes and get at least a medium rating.

If I want to save money to exchange for other things, or pay off the debt early, I have to do better and do more."

"And that's just the minimum repayment amount," Evelyn added, "If we only pay the minimum, the interest will snowball quickly.

It's best to make excess repayments.

But the prerequisite is that we have a sufficient source of tasks and a stable task completion rate."

"There should be tasks," Excellence looked at the pathetic 500-point balance in his account, gritted his teeth, and clicked the 'Confirm 60-period installment' option.

"Didn't teacher Clear Mirror say that the guidance process is continuous?

It's just that the interest on this 'student loan' is a bit high... Fortunately, our Observer status and temporary protection agreement weren't canceled due to the debt; that's the silver lining in this misfortune."

"I'm afraid that after this incident, your 'importance' assessment with The Council will increase," Evelyn analyzed.

"After all, it triggered an 'A-level Protection Agreement,' which means the 'trouble' you caused and your potential 'value' have both reached a new level.

But accordingly, the 'monitoring,' 'guidance,' and 'constraints' on you will definitely be strengthened.

This 5,000-point debt is, in a sense, a way to strengthen the 'binding'."

"A heavy debt doesn't worry, and many lice don't itch," Excellence quickly adjusted his mindset, even finding a bit of dark humor in the situation.

"Since we can't avoid it, we might as well make good use of it.

These 5,000 points of 'tuition' shouldn't be paid in vain.

Sister Evelyn, Senior White Elder, we must carefully study the data recorded this time, especially the rule characteristics of The Council's blue force field, and the power operation mode of 'Xuan'.

This is a 'combat teaching video' bought at a high price!

It might hide clues that could make us stronger, or even allow us to withstand attacks like 'Xuan's' one day in the future!"

"I have the same intention." Evelyn and the White Elder nodded simultaneously, their eyes burning with the fire of research.

This direct (protected) contact with a higher-dimensional existence, while extremely dangerous, left behind data that was truly invaluable.

The way The Council used a systematic, logical 'rule system' to counter the pure, overbearing 'will of Order' of 'Xuan' was in itself a demonstration of 'power application' at the highest level.

And the characteristics displayed by 'Xuan's' power also provided valuable first-hand information for understanding the mysterious organization 'The Ring of Order.'

Over the next few days, the 'Homeland' base operated in a complex atmosphere.

On one hand, there was the relief of having survived the disaster and astonishment at The Council's 'sky-high bill'; on the other hand, there was an urgency to seize the opportunity and deeply study the data.

Under Su Mu's 'supervision,' Excellence honestly rested and recovered, while also burying his head in the vast ocean of learning materials assigned by 'Clear Mirror.'

The first periodic test was imminent, and he dared not slack off.

Those theories regarding the original definitions and interrelationships of Order, chaos, entropy, information, and concepts, while abstract and dull, made Excellence gradually realize that once he understood these foundations, looking back at his own process of using the Power of Order, as well as observing the scene of 'Xuan' and The Council's powers clashing, many things that were previously vague and incomprehensible suddenly became clear.

Su Mu transformed into a 'study monitor,' 'checking in' on him at fixed times every day to prevent Excellence from slacking off or going to conduct dangerous experiments, while also finding ways to prepare nutritious meals for him.

Although she was always scolding him, her care was evident.

The research team led by Evelyn and the White Elder entered a state of forgetting to eat and sleep.

They repeatedly analyzed, modeled, and deduced the data brought back by the 'ranger.'

Evelyn focused on starting from energy spectrums, changes in information structure, and mathematical models of rule conflicts; while the White Elder was better at comprehending from the perspective of formations, the overall trend of energy flow, and 'artistic conception.'

The two complemented each other, and they actually managed to extract some extremely valuable findings from that complex data:

For example, they discovered that the defense of The Council's blue force field was not a simple energy shield.

It was more like a complex, multi-layered nested system of 'logical judgment' and 'rule veto.'

When 'Xuan's' pure white light of purification touched the force field, the force field didn't just resist it head-on; instead, it quickly 'analyzed' the 'rule intentions' contained within its power, such as 'forced definition,' 'rejection of heterogeneous matter,' and 'structural overwriting,' and then invoked corresponding 'rule bases' from its own database, such as 'Universal Civilization Protection Clauses,' 'Principle of Individual Self-Determination,' and 'Convention on Prohibiting Unilateral Concept Overwriting,' to perform 'logical rebuttal' and 'permission veto' against 'Xuan's' power intentions, thereby rendering it 'ineffective' at the rule level.

This was a 'debate' and 'ruling' of a higher dimension; the energy clash was merely its external manifestation.

Another example: they analyzed the characteristics of 'Xuan's' Power of Order and found that its 'purity' and 'exclusivity' reached an appalling degree.

In its energy spectrum, there were almost no 'impurity' harmonics; all energy pointed to the same absolute concept of 'Order.'

This extreme purity endowed it with powerful 'definition' and 'purification' capabilities, but it might also make it lack flexibility and the elasticity to deal with complex rule systems (like The Council's).

Perhaps this was one of the reasons why 'Xuan,' despite seemingly having a higher power level, was temporarily blocked by The Council's rules?

Although these findings were only preliminary and even contained speculative elements, they undoubtedly opened a valuable crack in the window for 'Homeland' to understand higher-level power confrontations.

After the incident, the 'sentry-7391b' Node's attention toward Excellence seemed to enter a new phase.

It was no longer just that bystander AI that passively recorded the environment and occasionally conducted 'popular science,' but began to 'interact' with Excellence more actively.

It would periodically (usually after Excellence finished a period of study or practice) push some 'personalized learning suggestions' and 'periodic risk assessment prompts' to his personal terminal.

These suggestions were often very precise, pointing directly to his current weak points or knowledge blind spots:

"Detected that Observer Excellence's recent mental consumption curve fits the 'moderate rule confrontation sequelae' model.

It is recommended to add two daily 'Basic Meditation: Consciousness Anchoring and Information Filtering' exercises, each lasting no less than 15 minutes.

Relevant guided audio and energy field auxiliary programs have been sent to your terminal."

"Based on the analysis of the residual 'Xuan' Order power in the K-3317 incident, it has extraordinary interference efficiency against targets involving 'information structure stability' and 'conceptual self-definition integrity.'

It is recommended that you strengthen training in the following areas: 1. Reinforcement and control of microscopic information Nodes by the Power of Order; 2. Building and maintaining a clear, multi-layered self-concept cognitive defense system.

Recommended reading: 'Information Fortress: From Theory to Practice,' 'The Definition of "I": The First Line of Defense Against Conceptual Erosion.'"

"Warning: It is monitored that the activity level of the 'Unknown Higher-Dimensional Concept Mark (Source: Lord of the Grand Feast)' within Observer Excellence has shown a continuous, slight upward trend over the past 96 hours (cumulative +0.0085%), and it is currently approaching the set 'Level 1 Observation Threshold' (0.01%).

The correlation between the rise and the 'Xuan' incident, as well as subsequent high-frequency rule learning and mental consumption, is 72%.

Recommendation: Avoid contact with environments of strong emotional fluctuation, chaotic energy fields, and activities that may trigger a loosening of consciousness.

If deep analysis, risk assessment, or attempts to suppress this mark are required, you may apply to the Seventh Sub-bureau for 'Specialized Detection and Treatment Services'; the basic service package starts at 2,000 contribution points."

Excellence chose to directly ignore the last 'paid service'—he was currently in a state of negative assets, so where would he have spare money for a deep medical check-up?

However, the change in the activity level of this mark did confirm his guess: his 'highly active' constitution, plus the high-level events and high-pressure learning he had recently experienced, were like constantly stirring a pool of water, causing this sleeping (or latent) 'conceptual anchor' to also ripple.

This made him more vigilant and also gave him a more intuitive understanding of the methods of existences like the 'Lord of the Grand Feast'—their influence was so subtle and difficult to eradicate.

What he valued more were the learning suggestions actively pushed by the Node AI.

After performing meditation and targeted training according to the suggestions, he indeed felt his mental state recovered faster, and his ability to finely control the Power of Order, especially when it involved the information level and conceptual defense, had improved significantly.

This made him have to look at the teaching effectiveness of The Council's 'standardized guidance system' with new eyes—it was expensive, but what it taught was truly useful.

The day of the first periodic test arrived amidst tense preparation.

The test was not a traditional paper-and-pencil or computer-based exam, but was conducted through the 'sentry-7391b' Node in the form of 'immersive consciousness Q&A and scenario simulation.'

Excellence put on a specially made neural interaction headband (providing a temporary link from the Node), and his consciousness accessed a pure white virtual space.

The test content was divided into three major parts:

Part One: Basic Concept Analysis.

Various abstract conceptual models, energy structure diagrams, and rule logic chains appeared in the virtual space, requiring Excellence to accurately point out their names, core definitions, basic properties, and interrelationships with other concepts within a specified time.

The questions covered multiple facets of the original definitions of Order, chaos, entropy, information, concepts, time, causality, etc.

Part Two: Understanding Safety Regulations and Ordinances.

Simulating various scenarios of higher-dimensional contact or civilization interaction that might be encountered, requiring Excellence to make correct judgments and response choices based on The Council's 'Basic Law' and 'Observer Code of Conduct' and other relevant ordinances.

For example: What steps should be taken first when discovering unknown civilization ruins? How should one report when encountering incomprehensible higher-dimensional phenomena? How to define the boundary between 'observation' and 'intervention' during a mission?

Part Three: Scenario Simulation and Practical Application.

This was the most challenging part.

Excellence's consciousness was cast into several highly realistic simulated environments:

In an ancient library ruin, he encountered a weakened version of the 'Dream Weaver's' information tentacles, which attempted to steal his memories and fragments of future possibilities.

Traversing a nebula contaminated by the "Return to Void" Whisper, void-like murmurs constantly echoed in his ears, tempting him to abandon the meaning of existence.

Facing a small "World Devourer" energy remnant (simulation), its greedy devouring field was eroding the shields of a small space station.

In these scenarios, Excellence could not rely solely on brute force; he had to flexibly apply the knowledge he had learned—using "Information Anchoring" and "Logical Firewalls" to counter the theft by the Dream Weaver; using clear definitions of self-existence and "Conceptual Rebound" techniques to resist the Return to Void Whisper; and using the strategies of analyzing energy absorption Nodes, constructing local "Anti-Entropy" structures, or performing "Conceptual Hedging" to weaken or break the devouring of the World Devourer remnant.

Especially when battling the simulated "Dream Weaver," Excellence had a flash of inspiration. Instead of choosing a head-on information defense, he attempted to wrap a small portion of trivial, or even logically flawed, memory fragments with a layer of "extremely tempting but actually a trap" "information shell" using the Power of Order, and actively "fed" them to those tentacles. The simulated Dream Weaver's tentacles indeed "took the bait." When they attempted to parse these fragments, they triggered internal logical conflicts, causing a brief disorder. Excellence seized the opportunity to "sever" their link to the main body in one stroke, ending the battle prematurely.

After the test ended, the score was generated almost immediately.

"Basic Concepts Section: Questions answered 150, correct 147, accuracy 98%. Evaluation: Excellent. Comments: Accurate understanding of fundamental concepts, clear discrimination, and possesses a good theoretical framework."

"Safety Standards Section: 20 scene judgments, 19 correct, accuracy 95%. Evaluation: Excellent. Comments: Deep understanding of The Council's basic regulations, capable of making compliant and reasonable judgments in simulated scenarios."

"Comprehensive Performance in Scenario Simulations:"

"Countering 'Dream Weaver (Simulation)': Tactical choices were novel and effective, using ingenuity to overcome force, short time taken, low consumption. Evaluation: Excellent+."

"Resisting 'Return to Void Whisper (Simulated Environment)': Self-anchoring was stable, conceptual defense was effective, no significant impact. Evaluation: Excellent."

"Dealing with 'World Devourer Remnant (Simulation)': Analysis was accurate, response strategy was reasonable, successfully weakened the target and retreated safely. Evaluation: Excellent."

"Comprehensive Scenario Simulation Evaluation: Excellent."

"Phase Test Summary: Excellent (A)."

"Learning Progress and Potential Assessment Update:"

"Knowledge Absorption and Integration Speed: Fast."

"Theoretical Understanding Depth: Good (steadily improving)."

"Knowledge Application and Innovation Ability: Excellent (demonstrates good practical application and creative thinking)."

"Current Overall Potential Rating: Maintained A- (Stability and controllability assessment slightly improved due to test performance and recent events)."

"Test Completion Reward: 'Observer' basic authorization partially unlocked. Contribution point exchange knowledge base list updated, adding categories such as 'Detailed Explanation of Primary Application Techniques,' 'Overview of Advanced Theoretical Frameworks (Partial),' 'Analysis of Common Threat Entity Behavioral Patterns (Extended),' etc."

"New guidance tasks will be released to your terminal in 24 standard hours. Please pay attention and be prepared."

Seeing the "Excellent" summary and the "partial authorization unlock," Excellence felt much better. Although he was burdened with debt, at least his learning results had received authoritative (albeit very expensive) certification. Moreover, there were more things to exchange, meaning that the paths to improve his strength in the future were more abundant. He impatiently browsed the updated exchange list.

The list was indeed much more extensive. "Primary Energy Structure Optimization Method (applicable to the Power of Order)," 200 points; "Basic Conceptual Defense Matrix Construction Principles and Diagrams (Simplified Version)," 350 points; "Weakness Analysis Report on Common High-Dimensional Threat Entities (Non-Core) - Volume 1: Dream Weaver, Return to Void (Whisper Form), World Devourer (Primary)," cost a staggering 1200 points! There were also some "Advanced Theoretical Overviews" in fields such as Introduction to High-Dimensional Materials Science, Basics of Information Topology, and Introduction to Rule Logic Calculus, with prices ranging from dozens to hundreds of points.

Excellence was dazzled and itching to get them, especially that "Weakness Analysis Report," which was simply strategic-level intelligence for the current "Homeland"! But looking at his -4500 account balance, and then at the despairing prices, he could only sigh and close the list.

"Stop looking, out of sight, out of mind." Su Mu appeared at the right moment, pulling him away from the terminal. "Hurry up and prepare for the next mission. Earn more contribution points, pay off the debt sooner, and then think about buying good things."

"Understood, Squad Leader." Excellence raised his hands in surrender.

24 hours later, the new guidance mission arrived as promised.

"Guidance Mission Number: 002."

"Mission Name: Practice of Observation and Risk Assessment of Internal Crises in Primary Civilizations."

"Mission Category: Civilizational Sociology Observation / Threat Assessment / Rule Compliance Test."

"Issuer: Seventh Sub-bureau Investigator 'Clear Mirror' (General Responsibility), 'sentry-7391b' Node (Assistance and Recording)."

"Recipient: Special Potential Observer 'Excellence' (Number: HJ-AT-0047) and designated assistance team."

"Mission Background Brief:"

"On the edge of the Seventh Sub-bureau's jurisdiction, within the stable star system numbered L-5589, there exists a primary civilization that has just stepped into the interstellar era but exhibits a severely deformed and unbalanced state in its social structure and technological development (tentative codename: 'iron and fire'). This civilization is dominated by military industry and heavy resource extraction, with sharp social contradictions and intense conflicts of interest between various power groups. The situation is currently highly tense, and it is on the eve of the outbreak of large-scale internal armed conflict (civil war)."

"Even more noteworthy is that, according to preliminary limited observation and information fragment analysis, there is at least one major faction within this civilization that is secretly researching and attempting to apply a highly dangerous forbidden technology excavated from an ancient civilization ruin. This technology is preliminarily judged to be associated with 'World Devourer' secondary infection bodies or related energy/material corruption phenomena, but its specific nature, completeness, and potential harm need further confirmation."

"Core Mission Objectives:"

"Proceed to the L-5589 star system. While strictly maintaining an 'Observer's neutral stance' and the 'Information Concealment Principle,' conduct in-depth and systematic observation and information collection on this civilization and the star region it inhabits. Key evaluation dimensions include:"

"1. The scale, root causes, main participants, comparative military strength, and potential evolutionary paths of the civilization's internal conflicts (focus on assessing the possibility of civil war, its scale, and the degree of self-damage the civilization might suffer)."

"2. Research progress, scope of application, and potential risks of the suspected 'World Devourer'-related forbidden technology (including technical loss of control, energy leakage, the possibility of attracting the attention of a real 'World Devourer', etc.), as well as the faction's level of control and intent regarding this technology."

"3. Whether there are other potential threat factors in the L-5589 star system and its surroundings (such as undiscovered 'World Devourer' residual traces, signs of unknown high-dimensional interference, unstable natural celestial bodies, or spatial phenomena, etc.)."

"4. Synthesizing the above information, provide preliminary evaluation opinions and suggestions on the civilization's 'sustainability,' 'potential for risk spillover,' and whether it possesses the value and foundation for 'limited contact,' 'risk isolation,' or 'conditional assistance' within The Council's framework."

"Mission Duration: 15 standard days from the time of arrival at the mission area."

"Resource Support:"

"1. Basic star map of the L-5589 star system, gravity well distribution, main celestial body parameters, and known scope of civilization activity."

"2. Briefing on the 'iron and fire' civilization (basic information such as social structure, main forces, historical contradictions, characteristics of the technology tree, etc.)."

"3. Preliminary energy characteristic description and danger level estimation of the suspected forbidden technology (F+ to D- level)."

"4. During the mission, you may apply to the 'sentry-7391b' Node for no more than five (5) instances of non-direct intervention technical consultation, information verification, or data analysis support (each consultation will have a deposit of 20-100 contribution points deducted in advance based on complexity, and final settlement will be made based on actual consumption)."

"Core Code of Conduct (Strictly Prohibited):"

"1. It is strictly prohibited to directly intervene in the internal affairs, conflicts, or decision-making processes of the 'iron and fire' civilization in any form or by any means. This includes but is not limited to: providing military assistance, leaking technology, information guidance, assassinating or protecting specific targets, manipulating public opinion, directly participating in combat, etc."

"2. It is strictly prohibited to expose one's own ('Homeland') existence, technological level, and connection to The Council. All observation activities must remain highly covert and must not leave any traceable, obvious traces."

"3. It is strictly prohibited to use equipment, capabilities, or methods beyond the current average technological level of this civilization for information collection (special circumstances require prior application and approval). Passive listening, remote observation, environmental information analysis, and other indirect methods should be the primary means."

"4. If unavoidable contact or danger is encountered, prioritize evasion and evacuation. In extreme cases, minimum defensive means consistent with the civilization's cognitive scope may be used, and a detailed report must be filed immediately afterward."

"Mission Rewards:"

"Basic Reward: Depending on the completeness, accuracy of information, depth of analysis, value of risk assessment, and feasibility of suggestions in the final submitted observation report, 200-1000 contribution points will be awarded."

"Extra Reward: If the report is evaluated as 'Excellent' or 'of special value,' you may receive additional 'Observer' experience, one free technical consultation opportunity, or unlock specific knowledge exchange permissions."

"Failure Penalties:"

"If any of the above 'Core Codes of Conduct' are violated, or if the mission is exposed due to operational errors, triggering unpredictable chain reactions, or causing substantive impact on the stability of the 'iron and fire' civilization or the star region, one or more of the following penalties will be imposed based on the severity of the circumstances:"

"- Deduction of contribution points (starting from 500 points);"

"- 'Observer' authorization temporary or permanent demotion/freezing;"

"- Cancellation of eligibility to accept subsequent guidance missions;"

"- Pursuit of compensation for losses and negative impacts caused to the 'Homeland' civilization;"

"- For particularly serious cases, the 'Observer Qualification Revocation' procedure will be initiated, and further accountability from The Council may be faced."

The mission description was very long, and the rules and regulations were extremely strict. Reading it didn't feel like an adventure mission; it felt more like an "Expatriate Researcher's Work Manual" filled with legal jargon and confidentiality clauses.

Excellence, Su Mu, Evelyn, and "White Elder" gathered together, finished reading it carefully, and had different expressions.

"This time it's... going to be an interstellar war correspondent? And the kind wearing shackles?" Su Mu frowned. "Cannot intervene, cannot expose, can only watch, and also have to write an in-depth analysis report... This is much more frustrating than being a cleaner last time, and much harder."

"To be precise, it's a 'Civilization Crisis Observer' and 'Potential Threat Assessor'." Evelyn pushed up her glasses, her gaze sharp. "The focus of the mission is very clear: observe a civilization that may self-destruct, assess the risks of its internal dangerous technology, and judge its 'value' and 'salvageability'—of course, from The Council's cold and utilitarian perspective. This is not just a capability test, but a comprehensive assessment of one's state of mind, determination, and awareness of rule compliance. Especially in an environment full of conflict and temptation (forbidden technology), whether one can adhere to the bottom line of 'non-intervention' is crucial."

"White Elder" slowly nodded, his gaze profound. "This mission has deep implications. First, it is naturally to examine Excellence's ability and state of mind in dealing with complex situations. Second, it is also to let the 'Homeland' experience firsthand how higher civilizations (such as The Council) view and handle the crises of lower civilizations. Third, that forbidden technology 'suspected to be related to the World Devourer'... we may use this opportunity to observe at close range the specific manifestations and impacts of such threats at the civilizational level, which will be of great benefit to our 'Homeland' in preventing future troubles. However, the boundaries here are extremely difficult to grasp. A slight carelessness could lead to trouble, or violate The Council's strict rules."

"No physical action, only using the brain, using the eyes..." Excellence scratched his head, feeling this task was quite challenging, but deep down, a hint of curiosity and desire for inquiry was stirred. "To see how other civilizations reached the brink of civil war, to see what exactly that 'World Devourer' technology they're researching is, and by the way, assess if it's worth 'saving'... This perspective is something we've never had before. Like a... bystander standing at a higher vantage point?"

"The key is that 'suspected World Devourer secondary infection-related technology'," Evelyn emphasized again, her tone serious. "If it really is a derivative or infection residue of a 'World Devourer', even the most marginal contact is extremely dangerous. That civilization is playing with fire, yet we can only watch from the sidelines, recording how the fire spreads, assessing if the house will collapse, and if the collapse will affect the neighbors... This feeling is indeed very passive, even somewhat cold. But this is the 'observer' stance required by The Council."

"The Council's logic is very clear," White Elder summarized. "Do not easily interfere in the internal affairs of a civilization, unless their actions pose an 'irreversible, existential threat' to their own survival, or constitute a 'clear and significant direct risk' to the stability of the star sector or other civilizations. This mission likely also has the intention of using the 'iron and fire' case to let 'Homeland' personally experience and understand this logic. At the same time, observing what kind of evolution 'World Devourer'-related factors trigger in a lower civilization is also valuable intelligence gathering."

"Then when do we set off?" Excellence looked at Wang Jianguo. The negative balance in his account constantly reminded him of the urgency of earning contribution points.

Wang Jianguo pondered for a moment, his gaze sweeping over everyone: "Preparation time, 24 hours. The 'ranger' needs special modifications for this mission, focusing on strengthening stealth capabilities, passive detection arrays, and the information processing hub. Evelyn, you are responsible for technical modifications. Senior 'White Elder', please assist in setting up higher-level concealment and protective arrays. Regarding personnel..."

He paused, his gaze falling on Excellence and Evelyn: "Excellence, Evelyn, you two must go. Excellence is responsible for core observation and assessment; Evelyn is responsible for technical support, information analysis, and liaison with the Node."

Then he looked at Su Mu, who wanted to speak: "Su Mu, you stay at the base."

"Why?!" Su Mu stood up immediately, her face full of dissatisfaction and worry.

"The nature of this mission is different," Wang Jianguo said in a calm but firm tone. "It is not a direct conflict or environmental cleanup, but covert observation and risk assessment. Excellence needs Evelyn's professional technical support, and the base needs you to hold the fort, coordinate resources, handle daily affairs, and act as one of our direct liaisons with The Council's Node. The base cannot have all core members away at the same time, especially when facing such an uncertain mission. Senior 'White Elder' also needs to stay to oversee the base's defense and the overall situation."

"White Elder" nodded slightly, indicating agreement. Su Mu opened her mouth, looked at Wang Jianguo's unquestionable gaze, then looked at Excellence, and finally bit her lip and sat back down unwillingly, but the look she gave Excellence was full of a warning: "Just try to get into trouble."

Excellence hurriedly patted his chest to guarantee: "Don't worry, Squad Leader! I'm just a civilization observer with a telescope and a notebook; I definitely won't cause trouble! I guarantee I'll come back in one piece, not a single hair missing! I'll also bring back a detailed 'review' and earn enough contribution points to pay off my debts!"

Preparations began in a tense and efficient atmosphere. Evelyn practically moved into the hangar, leading the technical team in a major overhaul of the 'ranger'. They removed some unnecessary weapon modules and active launch devices, installing more passive sensor arrays—these arrays were based on technology 'comprehended' and improved from the Node AI, capable of more sensitively capturing electromagnetic signals, energy fluctuations, information flows, and even collective consciousness ripples at the social-emotional level (very weak and vague). The ship's hull was coated with a newly developed composite material capable of absorbing and distorting various detection bands, the engines were adjusted to the quietest mode, and energy trail dissipation devices were installed. "White Elder" carved complex concealment runes at key Nodes of the ship and set up obfuscation arrays capable of interfering with prophecy and divination-type detection.

Excellence dove headfirst into the background information of the 'iron and fire' civilization and the relevant regulations of The Council. He needed to understand the historical context of this civilization, the focal points of social conflict, the character genealogy and interest demands of major factions, and the possible manifestations of that 'forbidden technology'. At the same time, he repeatedly studied the 'Core Code of Conduct', simulating various scenarios he might encounter in his mind, thinking about how to obtain the necessary information without violating the rules.

24 hours later, the 'ranger', now modified and radiating a low-key dark gray matte finish, quietly sailed out of the dock again. This time, besides Excellence and Evelyn, the ship only carried an elite reconnaissance and technical support team of six, each of whom had undergone strict psychological screening and confidentiality training.

The 'Homeland' base gradually shrank in the rear, turning into an inconspicuous dot of light in the starry background. Excellence stood in front of the porthole of the 'ranger', looking at the nebulae and distant stars flashing by outside, a complex and indescribable emotion welling up in his heart.

Just a short time ago, he was still an ordinary member of 'Homeland' who could only hide and run with everyone under the attack of the 'World Devourer', struggling with all his might for survival. But now, he had to go to another star sector with the unfamiliar and rather weighty identity of 'Special Potential Observer of the Seventh Sub-bureau of the Pan-Dimensional Civilization Observation and Mediation Council', to calmly observe and assess another civilization that might be on the edge of war and madness.

This change in identity and shift in perspective happened so fast that he felt a bit dazed, even feeling a hint of absurdity and unreality.

"What's wrong, don't feel used to it?" Evelyn's voice came from beside him. She had just finished the final system self-check after departure and walked to the window.

"A little," Excellence said honestly. "Before, when fighting and risking my life, the goal was very clear. Now I have to watch others potentially fight and risk their lives, yet I can't intervene, and I have to analyze why they are fighting, who will win, what will happen after the fight, and... whether it's worth saving. This feeling... is quite strange."

"This is part of growing up, and it's also the other side of the universe that The Council wants us to see." Evelyn crossed her arms, her gaze passing through the porthole, cast into the deep distance. "The fates of individuals and civilizations intertwine, collide, rise, and fall in the vast sea of stars. Some can walk out of dilemmas on their own, while others will fall into the abyss. Standing at a higher level, rationally observing, analyzing, evaluating, and making judgments that align with broader interests... it might be cold, but this is one of the norms for how advanced civilizations handle problems. Getting used to this perspective early on may not be a bad thing for the future path choices of 'Homeland'."

She turned her head and looked at Excellence: "Besides, witnessing another civilization's struggle and choices in a crisis with your own eyes is like a mirror, allowing us to see our own weaknesses and strengths more clearly, and to think about how we should avoid falling into similar dilemmas. This in itself is a valuable asset, even more valuable than contribution points."

Excellence nodded thoughtfully. Evelyn was right. This mission was not just 'working to pay off debts', but a precious opportunity for learning and reflection. Perhaps, 'Clear Mirror' arranging this mission also had this deeper meaning in it.

The 'ranger' engines maintained a smooth, low-power operation, like a giant whale gliding through the deep sea, silently sailing towards the L-5589 star sector.

Shortly after they left, inside the 'Homeland' base leisure center, the silver hexagonal Node 'sentry-7391b' that had always stood quietly, its surface's steadily flickering blue light suddenly accelerated its rhythm, and then sent a new encrypted information stream to the distant Seventh Sub-bureau headquarters:

"Observer 'Excellence' (HJ-AT-0047) and his designated team have, at standard time XX:XX, departed the port aboard the modified reconnaissance ship 'ranger', heading to the L-5589 star sector to execute 'Guidance Mission-002: Practice of Internal Crisis Observation and Risk Assessment for Primary Civilizations'."

"Comprehensive risk assessment for this mission: Medium (Primary risk sources: high internal instability of the target civilization, uncontrollability of suspected forbidden technology, unpredictability of observer 'Excellence's' behavior, and potential 'high-activity' attraction effect). Systematic evaluation of observer 'Excellence's' 'situational judgment', 'information analysis ability', 'rule adherence discipline', and 'risk avoidance awareness' has been activated simultaneously with the mission's launch."

"Additional observation item: According to the last full-ship scan before departure, the activity level of the 'unknown high-dimensional conceptual mark (Lord of the Grand Feast)' within observer 'Excellence' remains at a relatively high level, close to the threshold (0.0098%). In accordance with headquarters instructions, 'Special Risk Monitoring Protocol - Mild' has been added for this target, and its possible changes during this mission will be continuously monitored."

"Information transmission complete. Waiting for further instructions."

Moments later, a brief reply from the Seventh Sub-bureau headquarters arrived: "Received. Mission progress is remotely monitored by Investigator 'Clear Mirror'. Maintain full-band monitoring and data recording of the Node. Report immediately if there are any anomalies."

The blue light of the 'sentry-7391b' Node returned to a steady flickering frequency, continuing its silent and diligent observation and recording work.

In the distant L-5589 star sector, on the main planet of the 'iron and fire' civilization, the clouds of war were gathering in the sky, fleets of different factions were confronting each other in orbit, surface factories were producing weapons of slaughter day and night, while a few researchers who knew of the 'forbidden' were, in deep underground or orbital laboratories, harboring fear and ambition, toying with powers they perhaps had no ability to control at all. They were completely unaware of the approaching, cold, and rational 'gaze' and 'assessment' from the depths of the starry sky.

A silent 'observation' and 'judgment' concerning the fate of a civilization was about to unfold in this corner of the sea of stars. And the result of this observation might determine whether 'iron and fire' would be reborn from the flames or completely turn to ashes, and might even affect the future relationship between 'Homeland' and The Council, as well as the personal growth trajectory of Excellence.

Inside the 'ranger', Excellence yawned, stretched his somewhat stiff limbs, and looked at the target star sector identification getting closer and closer on the navigation screen, his eyes flashing with a mix of curiosity, vigilance, and a hint of a sense of mission.

"Civilization observer... an interstellar reporter who can't take action... I hope this time, the drama of 'iron and fire' won't be too tragic, and I also hope to complete the mission smoothly, earn more 'manuscript fees', and get rid of the title of 'debt-ridden man' as soon as possible."

He muttered to himself, turned, and walked towards the bridge, preparing to start work.

A new 'course' began in a completely different form. This time, the 'tuition' was calm observation, rational analysis, strict self-discipline, and a personal understanding of the heavy weight behind the word 'rules'.

A storm was brewing between the sky and the earth of another civilization. And the young 'Order' bearer would, for the first time, attempt to gaze at this storm with the eyes of an 'observer' that transcended individual emotions, and write an assessment report on its trajectory and outcome.

The road ahead was unknown, and the challenges were arduous. But the 'ranger' still forged ahead without hesitation, sailing towards the star sector shrouded in the clouds of war and dangerous technology.
