298: Employee benefits and universal KPIs

The ranger finally stopped looking like a broken toy ravaged by a brat.

Twelve standard hours ago, this ship was still like a dying metal whale, sprawled on the grey, mirror-like ground, its hull covered in gruesome gashes, seventy percent of its internal systems paralyzed, and the flashing red lights of the life support energy readings enough to drive anyone insane.

Now, under the repair beams continuously projected by the heart of silence—beams like living silver springs, gently and firmly flowing over every scar—the ship had regained its silhouette.

On the streamlined hull, those charred wounds were being slowly filled and smoothed over by newly formed silver metal, as if time were reversing and the wounds were healing themselves.

But an insider would know at a glance that this was merely "decent."

On the bridge's main screen, the system status list still bore quite a few glaring red tags. Main weapon array: Offline (core energy conduit melted). Advanced research module: Offline (75% of processor array overloaded and damaged). And that "Silent Escape" system that Excellence couldn't help but laugh at every time he saw it: Seriously damaged (Note: 7 attempted launches since installation, 7 failures, the 7th attempt suspected of causing the current 17% structural damage to the hull).

"At least it can fly now." Excellence lay on the medical bed, muttering to himself.

This bed was a piece of equipment "generously sponsored" by S-001; it looked like a glowing metal coffin, but lying in it was so comfortable it made one want to sigh.

A gentle flow of energy seeped through the mattress into his body, like countless tiny hands massaging every muscle and every hidden injury.

The previous battle had been too draining; the backlash from the Power of Order resisting the erosion of Chaos, combined with the excessive consumption of mental energy, would have landed a normal person in a traditional medical pod, soaking in nutrient solution for a month.

But this "Silent Corridor special edition" medical bed had amazing effects. In just over a dozen standard hours, Excellence felt he had recovered eighty percent of his state, and even faintly felt that his control over the Power of Order had become more refined—like a piece of raw iron that had been repeatedly forged by the special silence environment here, removing impurities and becoming purer and more agile.

The air circulation system emitted a steady, low hum, dispelling the last trace of a burnt smell and the scent of ozone.

Lighting had been restored, though to save energy, most corridors remained at a minimum level of dimness, except for the bridge and a few core areas.

Energy readings were stable at 32%—not high, but enough to maintain basic life support, low-power shields, short-range navigation, and most importantly: slow self-repair and a limited connection to the Silent Corridor database.

"System repair progress is at 87.3%, and all basic functions are online." Evelyn's spiritual projection was much more solid than before, with clear outlines, and one could even see the focused expression on her translucent face.

She hovered beside Stardust, assisting in processing the stream of information gushing from the S-001 database.

"The core energy conduit is stable, and the shield generator can maintain 'Basic Barrier' mode to withstand conventional void dust and small energy turbulence. The short-range maneuvering engines have passed tests, but the spatial anchoring array required for long-distance jumps is still damaged. The research module... only the basic analyzer and material reconstructor are available, with an efficiency of about 18% of the original design."

"That's enough. Being able to live, move, and 'get online' to look up information is already a surplus gain." Excellence sat up, and the medical bed, sensing his movement, automatically adjusted its support angle.

He looked out the porthole—at that eternally silent, silvery-grey space, where the giant gate that spanned heaven and earth, appearing to have existed since time immemorial, still stood in silence.

The Sea of Chaos behind the gate appeared relatively calm at the moment, only occasionally surging with dark colors, like the breathing of some giant beast in its sleep.

Stardust sat before the main console, with six light screens floating in front of her, the data streams flowing on them so dense they would instantly dizzy a normal person.

Her grey eyes quickly scanned those complex geometric structural diagrams, energy spectrum analyses, and technical documents written in an unfamiliar symbol system, her fingers occasionally tapping to mark and categorize key segments.

Beside her, a smaller light screen displayed the directory tree of the "Collaborator Level" database opened by S-001, with so many entries that just scrolling through them would take several minutes.

"You call this 'getting online'?" Stardust didn't even look up, her voice tinged with a trace of fatigue, but more so with focus. "We might be connected to a facility database left behind by some predecessor civilization—or perhaps even a super-civilization from multiple epochs ago—used to maintain the basic structure of the universe. Every byte here might contain knowledge that could overturn existing physics, or... taboos capable of causing a civilization to self-destruct."

"Metaphorically speaking. Relax, Stardust." Excellence smiled and also pulled up his own personal terminal light screen.

S-001 had given him a "newbie starter pack." Although the access level was only the lowest "Collaborator Level," the content was already staggering.

He first clicked on "Silent Corridor Infrastructure Description (Simplified Version)."

The document described this magical place in a tone almost as calm as a textbook: a "buffer zone" located at the boundary between the Order Domain and the Sea of Chaos; a "sealing array" built by a predecessor civilization known as the "Builders" based on the rules of "absolute silence"; its core function was to isolate, filter, and regulate the erosion of Chaos, and to monitor the status of the "Chaos-Order Boundary Stabilizer-Type VII" (that is, that giant gate); the energy core was the heart of silence, the network Nodes were the "Silent Nodes" (those black monoliths) scattered everywhere, and the foundation was the "solidified seabed of information entropy"...

Excellence muttered as he read: "The headquarters (Main System) handles strategy, the branches (each Silent Corridor) have managers (the watchers), have rules and regulations (management system), and also have emergency plans (deep protocols). This architecture is practically a cross-universe conglomerate."

"From a management perspective, a highly structured and rule-based organizational model is indeed an effective way to deal with long-term, high-risk, and complex tasks." Stardust replied, her eyes still not leaving the light screen.

She was studying the "Energy Characteristic Spectrum Library of 'Chaos Eroded Entities'," trying to find certain behavioral patterns of the Heart-Devouring Demon. "It's just that the business scope of this 'company' is a bit special—maintaining the stability of the universe's foundation. The KPI is probably 'zero Chaos leakage accidents'."

"Hey! Kid! Girl Stardust! Come over here and look! There's a major discovery!"

Mute's voice suddenly exploded in everyone's minds, filled with irrepressible excitement, and a trace of... the frustration of having been deceived for thousands or ten thousands of years.

Those few fragments of the stone of silence were placed on a specially made base—one that Evelyn had rushed to build using the ship's still-working nano-fabricator, based on the blueprints provided by S-001.

The base was connected to energy interfaces and several data fiber optic cables; at this moment, the stones were emitting a stable and gentle seven-colored glow, the light flickering and changing with the fluctuations of Mute's emotions.

He was "flipping through" the database directly with his consciousness, at a speed incomparably faster than Excellence and the others browsing with light screens.

"I've dug up the dirt on the 'headquarters'! Although it's still being covered up, piecing it together gives a rough picture!" Mute quickly projected key segments of the "Core Management System Operational Code (Public Part) and Historical Major Event Records (Summary)" he was viewing onto the public light screen.

The cabin went quiet, with only the low hum of equipment running and the slight buzzing of information flowing across the light screens.

Excellence, Stardust, Evelyn, and even the White Elder, who had always been as silent as a deep, ancient well, all turned their attention to the text segments highlighted by Mute.

The code name of the "Main System" had appeared in two places: the "Eternal Tribunal" and the "Balance Council." The records hinted that this might be two sides of the same coin—perhaps different functional profiles of the same entity.

It was not within any specific Silent Corridor, but located in a place called the "Anchor of Order" or "Harmony Core." The descriptions were very vague: "an independent dimension transcending conventional concepts of space and time," "the source of all rules of silence," "the ultimate cornerstone of the stability of the Order Domain."

Its functions were grand: macro-coordinating the work of all Silent Corridors; handling major crises across corridors (such as multiple the gate appearing abnormal at the same time); maintaining the overall stability of the Order Domain; and—the last point was marked as "speculation"—"possibly acting as an interface for contact with other high-level entities or civilizations on the Order side."

"Other high-level entities or civilizations?" Excellence frowned. "Does that mean that besides this Silent Corridor system, there are other... organizations on the Order side? Countries? Or some form of existence we cannot understand?"

"The records don't explicitly state it; this part of the information was either deleted or requires higher access." Mute's voice was tinged with irritation. "But the point is what follows! Look at this—"

More segments were brought up. These records came from the logs of different Silent Corridor units (the numbers were partially hidden), spanning a vast time frame, but the content was shockingly consistent: after a certain time point that was not clearly recorded (the timestamps of different corridors couldn't even be aligned; it seemed that the time flow itself was unstable here), the regular contact and instruction updates from the "Main System" gradually became sparse, the intervals lengthened, the content simplified, and finally, they were completely interrupted.

"'Communication silence,' 'unable to contact Arbitration Court/Council,' 'executing last received instructions,' 'switching to local autonomous mode'..." Stardust softly read out those log entries. "It seems that it wasn't just our corridor that lost contact; the entire network was disconnected."

Mute continued searching, his voice becoming more and more excited: "Some corridor logs just stopped, perhaps due to catastrophic events. Others, like ours, were maintained by local management systems (like an AI such as S-001) for basic operations. But what makes me—me, a 'former watcher'—most frustrated is this!"

A record that had been encrypted and archived, but had left a trace in the summary, was brought up:

[Instruction Archive: Highest Priority · Top Secret]

Source: Eternal Tribunal / Balance Council (Last verifiable source)

Sending Time: [Data Corrupted / Timeline Cannot Be Aligned]

Receiving Unit: All Silent Corridor Network

Core Instruction: Silent Lurking

Content Summary:

Immediate Execution: Upon confirming this instruction, all units must initiate the "Silent Lurking" protocol.

Core Requirement: Maintain the sealing stability of the corresponding "the gate" with the highest priority, and at all costs, prevent large-scale Chaos leakage.

Code of Conduct: Minimize self-presence to the greatest extent, avoid unnecessary energy leakage, external signal transmission, and active contact with unknown entities.

Information Processing: According to the protocol attachment "Lurking Period Information Control Regulations," encrypt, isolate, or physically delete sensitive information involving Main System coordinates, internal architecture, network topology, relationships with other Order-side entities, etc.

Waiting Status: Enter deep lurking status until receiving a specific, multi-verified "Restart Signal" or determining that the "pre-set timing" has arrived.

Supplementary Note: During the lurking period, the local management system gains temporary supreme decision-making power and can adjust resource allocation according to local conditions, but must not violate core requirements. the watchers should cooperate or enter standby / low-power status to reduce risks.

Status: Received · Confirmed · Executed

Attachment: "Lurking Period Information Control Regulations" (Insufficient access, cannot view)

silence. A silence lasting over ten seconds.

"So," Mute's voice finally sounded, filled with self-mockery and a sense of absurdity, "I'm not some 'secondary administrator.' I'm a... gatekeeper grandpa who was dumped in the wilderness by the headquarters to watch a warehouse, didn't even know what shocking secrets were hidden in the warehouse, the headquarters might have been gone for a long time, and in the end, I was 'optimized' into a rock by my own security system (deep protocol)?"

"From the logs, the core of the 'Silent Lurking' instruction is to preserve strength, hide information, and wait for the right moment." Stardust analyzed calmly, her fingers tapping the light screen to bring up more related records. "Deleting key information is to prevent the entire network from being leaked if a lurking unit is infiltrated or captured by the enemy. Making each corridor switch to a highly autonomous, low-power state is to keep the most basic 'the gate' sealing function from failing in the event that the Main System might be paralyzed. This is more like a strategy of... cutting off the tail to survive, or deep-diving standby."

"A form of protection." The White Elder's aged and peaceful voice slowly sounded, his mental fluctuations like ripples in the deep sea, carrying the wisdom accumulated over time. "Sealing away danger and secrets together, waiting for the correct 'key' or 'timing' to unlock them. Old man observes this 'corridor,' the rules are strict, the logic is meticulous, and every design has its purpose. Whoever issued this Order, if not forced by necessity, must have laid out a long-term plan. Your arrival, the return of this 'key' (he meant Excellence's Power of Order and Mute's fragments), may not be a coincidence."

Excellence was thoughtful: "Does White Elder mean that we might be 'variables' guided here by this 'plan' itself, or by some mechanism yet unknown? That 'supplementary clause'... could it be one of the judgment conditions for the 'pre-set timing'?"

"Cause and effect are like a web, hard to see the full picture." The White Elder said slowly, "But since we have entered the game, it is fate. The urgent matter is to use this place and these resources to strengthen ourselves and uncover the truth."

"Makes sense." Excellence took a deep breath, pushing down the shocking speculations about the whereabouts of the "headquarters" and the cosmic-level conspiracy, and turned to more pressing issues. "Senior Mute, regarding that abnormal 'Chaos Tide' that almost wiped us out earlier, and the abnormal activity of the 'Heart-Devouring Demon,' have you found any new clues in the higher-access records? Especially the 'will-driven' and 'sense of familiarity' you mentioned in that last record."

Mute's light flickered a few times, as if conducting a deeper search. "Regarding that tide... about 70% of the complete monitoring data was lost, as the system sensors were severely overloaded during the peak impact. But the remaining data fragments show that its energy characteristics are completely different from conventional Chaos fluctuations."

A complex energy spectrum comparison chart was projected. On the left was the spectrum of a "conventional Chaos tide," looking like a piece of wildly restless noise, with all frequency bands full of random spikes. On the right was the spectrum of the "abnormal tide - record fragment," where, against the generally chaotic background, several specific frequency bands showed strange, regular modulated waveforms.

"Look here, and here." Mute highlighted those waveforms, "These are not patterns that natural chaos can produce. It's as if... someone has embedded regular 'instructions' or 'markers' into the chaotic noise background. Although extremely faint and heavily distorted by the essence of chaos, the system still detected these 'non-chaotic' traces of modulation."

Stardust's grey eyes grew sharp: "Conscious guidance. That matches our previous hypothesis. Chaos itself is disordered and random, but this 'modulation' indicates that a force with a high degree of Order—or at least a force capable of 'harnessing' or 'guiding' chaos to a certain extent—influenced that tide, making it more destructive and targeted."

"As for that 'sense of familiarity'..." Mute's voice carried a hint of confusion and uncertainty, "It wasn't in the complete record. It might have been my intuition at the time, or perhaps... it's related to the part of my memory I lost. When I try to analyze the 'style' of those modulation traces, there's a strange, unsettling... sense of deja vu. It's as if I had encountered something similar somewhere, a long time ago."

Memory loss again. Mute's consciousness was too fragmented, and much key information had been lost with the shattering of the "stone of silence".

"S-001," Excellence turned to the omnipresent management AI, "Are there any records in the system regarding non-chaotic entities that can 'guide' or 'utilize' the power of chaos? Or, historically, are there any cases where the "Sea of Chaos" exhibited 'organized and purposeful' erosive behavior?"

S-001's response was calm and swift: "Database retrieval in progress... Relevant records involve 'highly sensitive information', with categorized keywords including: 'possibilities of high-Order evolution on the chaos side', 'Order/Chaos symbiosis or contamination entities', 'lingering hazards from previous civilizations', etc. Your current clearance level only allows you to browse summaries and partial redacted report titles. Would you like to browse?"

"Browse."

Several chilling titles appeared on the light screen:

"Hypothesis and Observation Records Regarding Potential 'Self-Organizing Consciousness Aggregates' within the "Sea of Chaos" (No Empirical Evidence)"

Summary: Long-term monitoring data indicates that chaotic energy may produce short-term, localized self-organization phenomena under certain extreme conditions, manifesting as directional movement, simplification of energy structures, etc. The hypothesis suggests that if conditions persist, it could catalyze the birth of a chaotic consciousness aggregate with basic Perception and purpose, but its stability and level of intelligence remain questionable. No empirical evidence captured.

"Seven Historical Cases of 'Order-side' Fallen Individuals/Civilizations Abusing the Power of Chaos Leading to Boundary Loss of Control (Records Incomplete)"

Summary: Records seven incidents where Order-side lifeforms, in pursuit of power or knowledge, actively drew chaotic energy into themselves or established unstable links, leading to individual distortion, civilization contamination, and eventually the collapse of local boundaries. All cases ended with the expansion of chaotic erosion and the 'cleaning' of the involved individuals/civilizations by the Silent Corridor system or unknown forces. Detailed process records are incomplete, with some involving higher clearance levels.

"Fragmentary Records of Suspected 'Chaos Controllability' Experiments Discovered in 'Previous Civilization' Ruins (Dangerous, Sealed)"

Summary: From data core fragments recovered in ruin area γ-7, sporadic records involving experiments such as "directional guidance of chaotic energy", "maintenance of Order-Chaos mixed states", and "artificial generation of boundary membranes" were parsed. Experimental results showed partial success but were accompanied by extremely high risks and uncontrollable side effects. All related physical objects and data have been sealed in accordance with the "High-Risk Relic Handling Regulations". Contact requires Level 5 or higher clearance.

"Report on Design Flaws and Potential 'Backdoor' Risks of "the gate" (Insufficient Clearance, Unable to View Details)"

Summary: [Title only. Content requires "the watchers" or higher level clearance. System note: This report was last updated 17 cycles before the dormant command was issued (local time of the corridor).]

Every title was like a crack in a door leading to deeper darkness, exuding an unsettling aura.

"Self-organizing chaotic consciousness... Traitors and madmen on the Order side... Dangerous experiments by previous civilizations... and "the gate" itself might have issues." Excellence felt his temples throbbing, "Any one of these sounds like a disaster-level event that could make the headlines of cosmic news (if such news still existed). And we seem to have accidentally stepped onto the intersection of all these minefields."

"Correction," Stardust's voice remained calm, but flames flickered deep in her eyes, "We didn't 'step' into it; we were likely 'arranged' or 'attracted' here. Abnormal tides, the activity of the Heart-Devouring Demon, the triggering of deep-level protocols, the judgment of supplementary clauses... the probability of this series of events being a coincidence is too low."

"So, us 'temps' have actually fallen into a super mess that spans Order and Chaos, involves previous civilizations, and touches on unknown dangers?" Mute summarized, his light flickering weakly, "And the head office might have already gone out of business, with no one to pay our salaries or insurance?"

"At least here provides housing, and even 'training'." Excellence tried to lighten the mood, although he also felt heavy-hearted. He stood up, walked to the porthole, and stared at the giant door in the distance. The chaos behind "the gate" looked relatively calm at the moment, but that surging darkness always made one feel like it was brewing something. "But we have no choice, do we? The ship is repaired, but the 'silent escape' system is broken. Even if we could escape, what's the situation outside? Other corridors? The Order Domain? Who knows what the outside has become since the dormant command was issued. Staying here, we at least have S-001, this 'local butler', this relatively safe stronghold, and this terrifyingly vast database."

He turned around, his gaze sweeping over every companion on the bridge—Stardust, focused and sharp; Evelyn, calm and loyal; White Elder, profound and wise; and that mass of shimmering stone fragments on the pedestal representing Mute.

"Our 'KPIs' are clear now." Excellence's voice became firm, "First, use the resources and time here to improve our strength. I need to better master the Power of Order and understand the rules of 'silence'. Stardust, you need to digest the knowledge in the database and build our own analytical models. Evelyn, continue to optimize the ship's systems, especially defense and stealth functions. Senior Mute, you are the key—we must find a way to repair your consciousness and restore your permissions and memories."

"Second, under the premise of ensuring safety, investigate those 'highly sensitive information' items. Focus on the parts related to the abnormal tides, the Heart-Devouring Demon, and the potential 'mastermind'. We need to know where the enemy is, what they are, and what they want to do."

"Third, assist S-001 in stabilizing this corridor. This is our temporary base; it cannot fall. At the same time, try to find a way to re-establish contact with the Main System—that Eternal Tribunal or Balance Council. Even if it's just to confirm whether it still exists."

"Fourth," he paused, "Prepare for everything. Prepare for the worst. If that force guiding the tide comes again, if we accidentally trigger other 'deep-level protocols', if the chaos behind "the gate" completely spirals out of control... we need contingency plans."

Stardust nodded: "The goals are clear, but every step is like walking on thin ice."

"The ice has always been thin, but we have a few more 'scouting poles' in our hands." Excellence pointed to the database screen and then at himself—the Power of Order surging within him, and the affinity he faintly felt with this space. "S-001, regarding our status as 'temporary assistants', are there any more specific arrangements? You can't expect us to work for free, right?"

"Request reasonable." S-001's voice sounded right on cue, "Based on the current situation, potential value assessment, and available resources, the 'Temporary Assistant Work Agreement (Draft) and Phased Goal Suggestions' has been generated. Please review."

A more formal document with more detailed clauses appeared on Excellence's main light screen. It clarified the rights of "temporary assistants": limited but stable energy supply, activity permissions in designated areas (including near some silent Nodes), "Assistant Level" database access, basic resource synthesis support, and receiving defensive assistance from S-001 when the corridor is under external threat. Obligations include: submitting regular activity reports (at least once every ten local corridor days), assisting in maintaining the structural stability of the corridor (within capabilities), participating in low-to-medium risk investigation/repair missions issued by S-001, and not proactively leaking the corridor's coordinates or core secrets.

The "Phased Goal Suggestions" listed specific "work tasks":

Capability Adaptation Training: In a simulated environment, master the methods of applying the Power of Order and other abilities under the rules of "silence", reducing energy leakage and rule conflicts.

Structural Maintenance Tasks: Assist in repairing the unstable energy output of three "silent Nodes" and one micro-crack in the "information entropy seabed" caused by recent chaotic tides.

Threat Analysis Project: Utilize existing combat records and database materials to build a behavior prediction model for the Heart-Devouring Demon, and attempt to analyze the energy residue of abnormal tides to find the possibility of tracking the "modulation source".

Limited External Exploration: Once the corridor's energy level recovers to over 45% and the "temporary assistant" team is assessed as ready, a short-range exploration of the void adjacent to the exterior of "the gate" can be conducted to assess the current surrounding environmental conditions.

Assistance in Repairing Former Watcher's Consciousness: Provide necessary energy and data interfaces to assist Mute (stone of silence fragment) in attempting consciousness integration and memory recovery; S-001 will provide limited technical support.

"There really is a performance review." Excellence was between laughing and crying. The style of this "property management company" was truly consistent, even in this abandoned outpost at the edge of the universe.

"Reasonable work planning and definition of responsibilities help improve efficiency and reduce misunderstandings and conflicts." S-001 answered matter-of-factly, "You may choose to accept the draft or propose modifications for negotiation. Please note that agreement performance, task completion, and risk assessment will directly affect your 'Assistant Assessment Score', which is related to subsequent permission levels, resource quotas, and task delegation priority."

"Accepted." Excellence did not hesitate much. This agreement gave them a legal, protected status, clear tasks and goals, and relatively fair resource exchange. In this place with strict rules and hidden dangers, having a "position" was much safer than being an "unregistered person" or an "intruder". "However, regarding the specific details of task risk rating standards, resource quotas, and autonomous action authority in emergencies, I hope to have more specific supplementary clauses."

"Suggestions have been recorded. Negotiation of supplementary clauses will take place in the next system cycle. The draft agreement has been recorded, and the temporary assistant status is officially activated. I wish you a smooth workflow." S-001's voice returned to that business-like calmness.

"Alright, everyone." Excellence clapped his hands, a complex smile mixed with fatigue, determination, and a desire for challenge on his face, "The temporary team of the 'Silent Corridor Property Management Company', branch number three thousand... I don't know what number, is officially on duty. First task: attend the 'pre-job training for new employees' taught by our 'former senior employee', Senior Mute."

"And then," he looked out the porthole at the eternal silence and the giant door in the distance, "let's see if this group of temps can achieve some 'full-time employee' results in this cosmic-level mess."

Stardust's mouth curled slightly, a barely visible arc, but the flames in her eyes burned brighter. Evelyn's projection nodded slightly. White Elder's mental fluctuations conveyed gentle affirmation and a hint of imperceptible anticipation.

"Now that's the spirit!" Mute's voice was full of vitality again, or rather, an excitement of "finally having something to do and being able to mess with people legitimately", "Come, come! Rookies! First lesson, let's start by understanding the underlying energy network of this godforsaken place! Don't think that having the Power of Order makes you special; if you use your abilities indiscriminately here, you'll be backlashed by the rules of 'silence' into an idiot in minutes, or attract something even more troublesome! When I first started, I suffered quite a bit before I figured out the ropes..."

The bridge of the ranger became a temporary classroom. Mute directly instilled complex energy structure diagrams, silent force field parameters, internal safe paths of the corridor (as well as dangerous restricted areas), and other information into everyone via data streams, accompanied by his vivid explanations (or rather, rants) mixed with a lot of "back in the day" and "let me tell you". Stardust quickly recorded, asked questions, and cross-verified database materials. Excellence tried hard to perceive the flow of the rules of "silence" that Mute mentioned, attempting to adjust his own Power of Order so that it was no longer an "outsider" clashing with the environment, but trying to integrate, comply, and even leverage it.

The training proceeded intensely and orderly. And in places they couldn't see, in the silent deep space outside the porthole, changes were happening.

Behind that towering gate, the surging of the Sea of Chaos seemed to show an extremely subtle, short-lived regular fluctuation, as if some sleeping existence had gently moved a finger in a dream. A trace of an imperceptible "gaze" with an inquisitive intent swept over the outer barrier of the Silent Corridor faintly.

And in the deepest part of the corridor management system's logs, a status report marked as "Low Priority · Delayed Sending" had its sending queue priority quietly adjusted upwards by an insignificant notch by an unrecorded underlying process. The report title was: "Detection of new type of Power of Order carrier intervention and reactivation of former watcher (fragment state) consciousness signal — Potential variable assessment in progress."

The calm of the eye of the storm is often the most subtle. The adventure of the temps has just written its first comma.

Somewhere distant, beyond conventional space-time, where the Anchor of Order might have once existed, there was only solidified silence and thick dust accumulated during a long wait.

The universe is like a chessboard; the pieces have already been quietly placed.
