287: Escape from the Abyss
The rock fissure was as steep as if carved by a knife and axe, so narrow that one had to press their body tight against it. Jagged rocks interlaced like canine teeth, and slippery, shimmering moss acted like traps, covering every possible foothold. Every dig of a finger, every probe of a toe, was accompanied by the sound of gravel rustling and falling, plunging into the bottomless darkness below, which was filled with the roar of collapse and an eerie purple light. Behind them, the dull thuds from deep within the earth—like the dying struggles of a giant beast—were continuous. Every vibration made the rock walls tremble, urging them upward, higher and higher, like a death warrant.
Excellence climbed between Stardust and White Elder's drone. Sweat had long since soaked his tattered stealth suit, mixing with dust, blood, and the filthy mucus from previous battles to form an extremely uncomfortable crust on his skin. His arms trembled slightly from the continuous exertion, and a burning sting came from his fingertips—his combat gloves had long been worn through. Worse still, deep in his mind, the fragmented information and distorted images of the "stone of silence" that had been forced in did not subside after escaping danger. Instead, like impurities sinking to the bottom of water, they constantly churned up with his mental fatigue and physical pain, interfering with his focus.
Those were scenes he could not understand: boundless, writhing darkness; cold, massive structures composed of countless black crystals; a closed, conceptual "door"; and the heartbreakingly lonely silhouette of a "the watchers"... These fragments were mixed with an ancient loneliness and deep sorrow, eroding his will silently like cold venom. He had to dedicate more than half of his mind to forcibly running the equally exhausted Anchor of Order at his brow to suppress these chaotic "noises," barely maintaining his physical enhancement and the basic coordination necessary for climbing.
"Left side... two o'clock... the rock is relatively stable... there are cracks for gripping!" Stardust's voice came intermittently over the comms channel, fragmented by intense psionic interference and physical vibrations. Even so, she still moved as if walking in the smoothest laboratory corridor—precise, efficient, without a single wasted motion. Her grey eyes scanned quickly in the dim light. Even carrying heavy equipment, her body maintained a near-instinctive balance and agility while moving on the almost vertical rock wall, as if gravity were merely an adjustable parameter for her.
"Above... about twenty meters... the fissure shape changes... width increases... detected traces of artificial modification... highly likely connected to an abandoned main ventilation shaft or maintenance tunnel!" White Elder's drone hovered above like a vigilant mechanical swift. The detection beam emitted from beneath its body traced a pale gold path through the dust, while occasionally releasing weak energy pulses to precisely shake loose or push away loose rocks that might pose a threat, clearing a relatively safe path for the two below.
"Rumble—!!"
Another vibration, far more violent than before, like a spasm of the earth's heart, came violently from deep beneath their feet! The entire steep rock fissure groaned under the unbearable weight, suddenly twisting and shaking to one side! Large chunks of rock broke off and fell from above and beside them, crashing down with a whistle of death!
Excellence's pupils shrank. Relying almost entirely on combat instinct, he slammed his body against the rock wall and, using both hands and feet, lunged toward a hollow above and to the side! A stone the size of a millstone, carrying debris and dust, crashed down just past his back, the resulting wind making his back ache. He gripped the edge of the fissure tightly, his knuckles making a slight "clack" from the excessive force, his heart pounding like a drum in his chest.
"Structural instability accelerating! Must exit this area immediately!" Stardust's voice rose amidst the intense interference, a rare sense of urgency piercing the noisy background. Just as she finished speaking, a section of the fissure about ten meters long that they had just struggled to climb collapsed inward with a tooth-aching crack, as if a giant bone had snapped! Dust mixed with rubble poured down like a mudslide, instantly swallowing their path. Had they been half a step slower, they would have become part of this underground tomb.
The cold breath of death almost licked the back of his neck. Excellence clenched his teeth, a metallic taste of blood spreading in his mouth—he couldn't tell if he'd bitten his inner cheek or suffered internal injuries. He forcibly crushed the churning visions of ancient "gates" and the lonely "the watchers" in his mind, pouring all his remaining mental power and physical energy into the climb before him. He couldn't stop, couldn't think; there was only upward!
Climbing became a purely mechanical, instinctive race against gravity, time, and collapse. His sense of time was completely distorted; every second felt stretched into ten minutes of agony. Every pull of an arm and every push of a leg was accompanied by the groan of muscles and the rapid depletion of energy. Sweat ran into his eyes, bringing sting and blurriness. In his ears, besides his own heavy breathing like a bellows and his out-of-control heartbeat, was the low thunder of the rock layers continuing to disintegrate, and the increasingly clear, increasingly oppressive mad roar of the eye of suffering piercing through the thick earth. That roar was no longer a simple sound, but a noise that directly polluted the soul, filled with rage toward the destroyed anchor, hatred for the escaped prey, and a greedy desire for the impending destruction of all.
Just as Excellence felt his muscle fibers were about to tear and his lungs were about to burn at his limit, Stardust, who had emerged from the fissure above, turned back and reached out a steady, gloved hand. Excellence used his last bit of strength to grab it and was pulled up by a clever use of force! Immediately after, White Elder's drone also glided out gracefully, hovering nearby.
They returned to the relatively wide but equally perilous abandoned mine tunnel they had passed through earlier. Although it wasn't as suffocating as the vertical fissure, the situation was just as bad. The ground was covered in web-like new cracks, as if it could collapse entirely at any moment. The support structures overhead and on both sides emitted uneasy "creaks" and groans, and gravel and dust fell like a never-ending rain. The smell of sulfur and a burnt odor in the air grew stronger; the geothermal heat was completely stirred up by the violent energy conflict above, and the temperature had risen significantly.
"Heading confirmed! Along this main tunnel toward the northeast and slightly upward, a straight-line distance of about 3.2 kilometers, we can reach the preset emergency exit—the outer drainage culvert of the former Site 7 Resonance Stone Refinery!" Stardust didn't pause for a moment, not even to wipe the sweat and dust from her brow. She immediately determined the route based on constantly updating terrain scan data, and with a flash of her figure, she sped deep into the mine tunnel. Excellence and the drone dared not delay and followed immediately.
There were several times more obstacles in the mine tunnel than when they had come down. The ground was frequently blocked by fallen boulders, forcing them to risk climbing over or, relying on Stardust's precise calculations, use special rifles or Excellence's remaining energy to blast through relatively weak spots to force a path. The dust in the air was so thick that visibility was less than ten meters, and the strong smell of sulfur irritated their respiratory tracts, making them cough violently. From deeper within, there was the faint hiss of groundwater being evaporated by high temperatures and a low gurgling sound as if magma were flowing.
"Commander! Please respond! Repeat! Report your position and status!" Evelyn Li's voice finally broke through the heavy interference again, sounding over the communicator. Although it was still mixed with harsh electromagnetic hissing and the pops of energy turbulence, her words were finally audible. "The eye of suffering projection is undergoing high-energy materialization! The spatial rift is expanding steadily, and the threat level continues to rise! The Anchor of Order... shield systems have overloaded multiple times, and some external modules are damaged! They are executing high-intensity spatial disturbance tactics, trying to interfere with and delay the descent process, but the tactical window is shrinking rapidly!"
"We are... evacuating to the surface!" Excellence panted heavily as he ran, his eyes scanning the route map and distance markers flashing and updating on the edge of the tactical eyepiece shared by Stardust. "Estimated... thirteen to fifteen minutes... to reach the exit coordinates!"
"Received! Exit coordinates synchronized to ship navigation! The ranger will be on standby to pick you up in the airspace directly above the exit at an altitude of three thousand meters!" Evelyn Li's speech was extremely fast. "Warning: Surface monitoring shows the area around the exit has become a high-concentration psionic pollution zone! The spatial structure is extremely unstable, and there are a large number of aberrant entities spawned by the leakage of the eye of suffering's power! The Anchor of Order will do its best to provide orbital fire suppression and psionic interference, but ground clearing and breakthrough must rely on yourselves! Repeat, ground threat level: extreme!"
"Understood!" Excellence closed the communication, his heart heavy. Thirteen minutes in this hellish corridor would be more agonizing than thirteen hours. And even if they escaped, what awaited them was not a safe zone, but another battlefield filled with monsters.
"Speed up! Maintain formation!" he growled. Ignoring the stinging in his meridians, he squeezed out a bit more Anchor of Order to pour into his legs, and his speed suddenly increased a notch. Stardust adjusted her pace in sync, always staying half a body length ahead of Excellence, able to both lead the way and provide support at any time. The drone, like a loyal sentry, circled above and to the side, using its limited energy for alert scanning and occasional obstacle clearing.
After struggling forward for another kilometer, the slope of the mine tunnel became noticeably steeper. Regular but broken stone steps began to appear on the ground, and rusted metal supports and long-extinguished, cobweb-covered ancient lights appeared on the rock walls. They were approaching the abandoned refinery area.
However, the deterioration of the environment also intensified. Large patches of shocking black and corrosive marks, as if splashed with strong acid, began to appear on the rock walls and ground. Viscous, purple-black substances emitting a pungent, cloying stench mixed with sulfur flowed and writhed like living sores. The concentration of nauseatingly polluted psionic energy in the air rose sharply, directly irritating the skin and bringing bursts of needle-like itching and a faint sense of dizziness.
Even more heart-pounding was a low, dense "rustling" sound, as if countless slippery arthropods were crawling collectively in the dark. It began to permeate from the darkness ahead, from the gaps in the overhead ventilation pipes, and even from the tiny cracks in the ground, quickly converging into a scalp-numbing background noise.
"High-threat biological signal cluster! Quantity... extremely high! Energy spectrum 87% similar to 'Rot-Echoes,' but life reactions are more dispersed, chaotic, and carry strong spatial distortion attributes!" Stardust suddenly braked, her special rifle instantly raised, the muzzle pointing steadily toward a ninety-degree sharp turn in the mine tunnel ahead, data streams flashing wildly in her grey eyes.
Excellence's "Emotion Observation" field of vision was also instantly filled with dark red light spots flooding from ahead like a turbid sea of blood! It wasn't just hunger and madness; it was mixed with a chaotic and disorderly desire for destruction generated after being forcibly distorted and polluted by a higher-Order existence. The numbers were far beyond anything they had encountered in the underground caverns before!
"They are secondary aberrations spawned directly by the radiation of the eye of suffering's power! They might have fused surface organisms, residual pollutants, and even... distorted spatial fragments!" Excellence made an instant judgment, the grip of his energy pistol soaked by the sweat on his palm. "We can't get bogged down in a war of attrition! Full breakthrough!"
Just as they were about to charge through, the "rustling" sound suddenly turned into a sharp hiss, like metal scraping glass! Immediately after, from behind that corner, from the broken ventilation grates above, and from the cracks that suddenly opened in the ground, black, layered masses of deformed monsters surged out like bursting sewage!
They still vaguely showed the outlines of echo creatures or certain local rodents and reptiles, but all had been distorted beyond recognition. Some looked like multi-legged centipedes haphazardly pieced together from countless small, pale bone segments, writhing at high speeds on the ground and rock walls, their mouthparts opening and closing to drip corrosive mucus. Some were like wax statues melting under high heat, their bodies constantly lengthening and deforming, extending slimy pseudopodia with ends split into suckers, trying to entwine prey. Others were simply rolling masses of tumors covered in constantly opening and closing eyes and salivating mouthparts, leaving disgusting trails of slime wherever they went. Their only commonality was their eyes (or similar sensory organs) burning with dark red light spots of the same origin as the eye of suffering, filled with pure malice, and the distorted psionic field they emitted that made even the soul feel polluted.
"Free fire! Breakthrough formation!"
Excellence and Stardust's firepower instantly interlaced into a net! The hiss of energy beams and the scream of the special rifle's silver-white electrical arcs echoed in the narrow mine tunnel! The first few monsters in front were blown to pieces under the dense fire! But this was merely a drop in the bucket! More monsters surged forward like a black tide, stepping over the remains of their kind, hissing, writhing, and rolling! Their vitality was terrifyingly tenacious; unless hit directly in the core or struck by Order-attributed attacks, even if their limbs were broken or their torsos torn, the mangled parts would still frantically lunge and bite!
"The numbers are too high! Conventional firepower cannot effectively stall them!" Stardust fired with incredible precision while moving laterally, trying to find a weak point in the monster tide or usable terrain. But the monsters surged from all directions, and they were instantly surrounded on three sides, supported only by the relatively solid rock wall behind them.
"Use the shock grenades! Watch out!" A fierce light flashed in Excellence's eyes as he quickly unclipped the only two remaining high-explosive shock grenades from his waist—these were prepared for the most extreme situations. They were incredibly powerful, and using them in an underground space was akin to playing with fire! He estimated the distance and angle, and with all his strength, he threw the two metal spheres, which were blinking with a dangerous red light, toward the center of the most crowded passage and the branch surging from the left!
"Take cover!"
Both of them dove behind a relatively recessed section of the rock wall on the right at the same time, curling their bodies tightly and covering their ears (though they knew it wouldn't do much).
"Boom!!! Boom—!!"
Two bursts of blinding white light erupted almost simultaneously, followed by a low-frequency shockwave strong enough to shatter internal organs and a high-frequency vibration that could tear eardrums! The monsters near the center of the explosion were instantly vaporized and torn apart! Those further out were struck as if by an invisible giant hammer, stumbling, their limbs breaking as they let out chaotic screeches! The entire mine tunnel shook violently; large amounts of the ceiling and both side walls peeled off, and dust instantly filled the entire passage!
"Go!"
Taking advantage of the moment when the monsters were temporarily cleared and the path was forcibly widened by the explosion's shockwave, Excellence and Stardust dashed out from behind their cover like two arrows released from a bow. They ran at top speed through the thick dust, the scorching air currents, and the severed limbs of monsters scattered across the ground, racing up the stairs! White Elder's drone followed closely behind, continuously firing energy beams to precisely clear out the occasional stragglers pouncing from the shadows on the sides.
Behind them, after a brief moment of chaos, the monster tide let out even more violent and ear-piercing screeches, regrouping like a black wave of vengeance in hot pursuit. However, the chain-reaction collapse triggered by the shock grenades was also spreading; the mine tunnel behind them was constantly blocked by falling boulders and disintegrating rock, forming natural barriers that temporarily slowed the pursuers.
The three of them didn't dare to pause for a moment, pushing their speed to their physiological limits as they ran desperately up the increasingly steep stairs. The sounds of collapse behind them, the screeches of monsters, and the increasingly clear vibrations from the ground above—along with that energy roar that felt as if the sky were about to fall—interwove into a desperate march of escape.
Finally, at the end of the stairs ahead, a pale and distorted light, different from the eerie glow of the underground ores, filtered in! That light was mixed with an ominous purple-red, dyeing the dust floating near the exit with a bizarre color.
At the end of the stairs was a heavy metal gate, so rusted it had almost merged with the rock wall. the gate was half-closed, its hinges long since rusted shut, leaving a narrow gap. Through the gap, one could see collapsed metal frames, twisted pipes, and that apocalyptic sky shrouded in purple-red light.
"This is it! Charge out!" Excellence took the lead, slamming his shoulder hard against the half-closed, rusted gate!
"Creeeeak—Clang!"
Amidst the ear-piercing sound of metal grinding and snapping, the gate was forced open into a larger gap! Blinding (though distorted) sky light, mixed with thick dust, chemical residue, and violent psionic pollution, instantly flooded in! Excellence didn't hesitate and ducked out!
Outside was a massive ruin plaza, like a graveyard for giant beasts. This was clearly the core area of that abandoned Resonance Stone refinery. Giant furnaces dozens of meters high lay toppled on the ground, their massive openings revealing dark, congealed residues of unknown substances. Thick conveyor pipes, like blood vessels twisted by a giant force, hung haphazardly, their breaks covered in rust. Various nameless giant mechanical wrecks were scattered everywhere, covered in thick dust and the marks of time's erosion. The ground of the entire plaza was covered in cracks and potholes; from some of the cracks, a faint dark red light shimmered, emitting high heat and the smell of sulfur.
And the sky... it was no longer the sky in the memory of any living being.
Thick, constantly rolling and surging purple-black clouds hung low, almost pressing down on the tops of the collapsed furnaces. In the center of the clouds, a suffocatingly large vortex was slowly rotating. At the center of the vortex, a projection of the eye of suffering—so clear that every scarlet blood vessel and every writhing shadow could be seen, filled with madness and malice—had materialized to a terrifying degree! It wasn't embedded in the sky; rather, it looked as if the sky itself had been torn open, revealing a peephole for that indescribable existence behind it! The vast, abyss-like psionic pressure was like physical lead and mercury, weighing heavily on the ruins and on the heart of every living creature trying to look up, bringing endless fear and despair.
"ranger! We have reached the surface exit! Request immediate pickup!" Excellence shouted into the communicator, his eyes like lightning as he quickly scanned the surrounding ruins. Countless "gazes" filled with malice, hunger, and chaos were locked onto them from behind collapsed machinery, from cracks in the ground, and from the shadows of twisted metal frames.
"Signal locked! Pickup coordinates sent! Arriving in thirty seconds! Watch out for orbital and aerial attacks!" Evelyn's voice carried a metallic tension.
Almost the moment the communication ended, the pupil of that giant eye in the sky shrank slightly. Then, a torrent of dark purple destructive energy, as thick as a mountain and composed purely of annihilation, tore through the air like the spear of a fallen giant god from myth. With a scream that could annihilate everything, it crashed into an open space a hundred meters ahead of them! It wasn't aimed directly at them; it was more like a deterrent area-of-effect strike, or perhaps clearing potential obstacles and pickup points!
"Scatter! Find cover!"
Excellence, Stardust, and the drone instantly dove in three different directions, each finding the nearest, relatively sturdy piece of wreckage for cover!
"Rumble—!!!!"
The dark purple energy torrent slammed into the earth! Instantly, a terrifying crater over fifty meters in diameter, its edges flowing with lava-like substance, appeared on the spot! The shockwave from the explosion was like an invisible tsunami, carrying rubble, metal fragments, and scorching air as it spread wildly in all directions! Wherever it passed, smaller pieces of wreckage were blown away or disintegrated! Even a hundred meters from the center of the explosion, the half-toppled furnace shell where Excellence was hiding shook violently, letting out an unbearable groan. Scorching air flooded in through the gaps, nearly suffocating him!
Before the dust could settle, screeches filled with excitement and hunger echoed from all corners of the ruins! Countless secondary pollution aberrations, more bizarre and powerful than those in the mine tunnel, surged from their hiding places! Some were like skinless flying Nightgaunts, consisting only of muscle and bone, circling at low altitudes. Others were like slimes that merged with the shadows on the ground, capable of changing shape at will. Most were indescribable stitched monsters, fusing mechanical wreckage with biological tissue. Their only common goal was the three people—Excellence and the others—who had just appeared and were radiating the aura of fresh life!
"Hold the position and wait for backup! Save ammunition!" Excellence leaned out from behind his cover, his energy pistol firing continuously, hitting two metal-scorpion-like monsters that were trying to approach from the side, sending sparks flying and making them stumble back. Stardust occupied a relatively high, half-collapsed console wreck, her special rifle calmly firing silver-white electric bolts. Every shot precisely hit the cores or joints of the distant monsters, efficiently reducing their numbers. White Elder's drone circled flexibly above them, its purification beams and micro-energy bolts interweaving to form a low-altitude defense net, intercepting flying monsters and long-range attacks from the ground (such as acid and bone spurs).
However, there were simply too many monsters, and they seemed to be surging in continuously from the more distant polluted areas! Even more fatal was the fact that in the sky, the giant pupil of the eye of suffering, after completing its deterrent strike, began once again to condense that soul-freezing dark purple light! This time, that destructive "gaze" seemed to move slowly, beginning to truly "scan" the ruins, searching for the "bugs" that had just luckily escaped!
Attacked from both front and back, with no way to the sky! A desperate situation within a desperate situation!
At this critical, almost hopeless moment—
"Vwoom—!"
A pure, soft, yet undeniably stable rhythm of an azure beam of light, like a ray of hope tearing through thick dark clouds, shot precisely from the edge of the purple-black vortex high in the sky! It didn't attack the main body of the eye of suffering (which would have been like an ant trying to shake a tree). Instead, it acted like a precise scalpel, "cutting" hard into the edge of the pupil where the eye of suffering was condensing energy!
It was the Order's Anchor! That dark purple crystal ship had somehow risked leaving its relatively safe orbital altitude and broken into the core area of the eye of suffering's energy radiation, launching this extremely dangerous but vital interference shot!
The process of condensing the dark purple energy was forcibly interrupted! The giant pupil of the eye of suffering trembled violently, and then it erupted with an even more frenzied and venomous flashing light! It seemed to be completely enraged by the offense of this "tiny flying insect," and instantly turned the vast majority of its "attention" and malice toward the Order's Anchor in the high sky!
"Now! tractor beam ready!" Evelyn's voice rang out like heavenly music!
Excellence looked up abruptly to see the familiar, streamlined silver hull of the ranger. Like a sword cutting through chaos, it was diving toward their coordinates from the high sky covered in purple-black clouds at a nearly vertical, almost suicidal angle! The hatch on the ship's belly was already open, and the tractor beam generator emitted an increasingly bright, reassuring blue glow!
Hope had never been so close, yet so fragile!
On the ground, the monster tide, having lost the direct attention of the eye of suffering, did not stop its attack. Instead, because of the appearance of the ranger—a larger and more conspicuous target—they became even more frenzied and excited! Several exceptionally strong flying aberrations with tattered fleshy wings on their backs let out sharp screeches and were the first to break away from the ground battlefield. Like kamikaze attack planes, they lunged fearlessly toward the diving ranger!
"Evelyn! Watch the air!" Excellence shouted into his communicator while firing to repel a slime monster trying to pounce onto his cover.
"Locked!" Evelyn's calm voice held a trace of coldness. Several close-in pulse cannon turrets on the ranger's broadside instantly turned and fired! A dense, light-blue energy barrage wove a net of death in the air, precisely blowing those lunging flying monsters into clumps of viscous, burning wreckage! The ship's speed didn't decrease at all as it continued its heart-stopping dive, getting closer and closer to the ground!
"Converge at the ship's designated hovering point!" Excellence blew apart the head of a giant earthworm-like monster emerging from a crack in the ground. He exchanged a look with Stardust, and both leaped out from behind their cover. They retreated quickly toward the relatively open area below the ship marked as the pickup zone, firing continuously to suppress the monsters surging from the sides and rear. White Elder's drone fired at full capacity, acting like a miniature mobile turret, clearing the threats from their rear and flanks.
One hundred meters! Fifty meters! Twenty meters!
The ranger leveled its hull abruptly at a height of less than fifteen meters from the ground. The tractor beam generator on its belly glowed intensely, and several soft blue beams of light, like precise lassos, instantly extended downward, enveloping the sprinting Excellence, Stardust, and the following drone!
A gentle but irresistible force field wrapped around them. Their bodies felt weightless as they began to quickly rise from the ground toward the open hatch above, which represented survival!
"Roar—!!!"
On the ground, the monsters unable to fly let out angry and futile roars, throwing stones and spitting venom and acid at the sky. However, most were easily deflected or annihilated by the ranger's energy shield. A few strong monsters that tried to jump and pounce were also taken down in time by the close-in cannons.
Survival seemed within reach.
However, at the very last moment before the three were about to be pulled into the hatch, an anomaly descended in a way that far exceeded everyone's expectations!
High in the sky, the eye of suffering, which was engaged in high-intensity entanglement with the Order's Anchor, seemed to have its final limit completely provoked by the fact that the ants beneath its feet were about to escape. Its giant pupil suddenly contracted inward into an extreme black dot, and then it abruptly expanded and dilated! A terrifying fluctuation that defied description and transcended the scope of energy attacks swept out silently but violently in all directions from the center of its pupil, like the shockwave of a supernova! It wasn't energy, but a crude interference and solidification of the spatial rules themselves!
"Maximum alert! Ultra-standard spatial anchoring field detected! Local gravitational constant disrupted! Shield system suppressed at the rule level! Overload critical!" Evelyn's warning voice instantly became sharp and ear-piercing!
The ranger shuddered as if it had crashed into a piece of suddenly congealed, invisible amber. Its speed plummeted! The tractor beams wrapping around Excellence and the others flickered violently and twisted, becoming extremely unstable as if they would break at any moment! Even more terrifying was that the space around the ship began to "solidify" and "crystallize" visibly, with dense, ice-crack-like purple-black patterns appearing! The ship itself was being tightly gripped and squeezed by an invisible giant force originating from space itself. The light-blue energy shield erupted with a blinding glare, and the hull's keel let out an ear-grating groan as if it were about to disintegrate in the next moment!
Enraged, the eye of suffering was forcibly interfering with and solidifying local spatial rules at any cost, attempting to permanently imprison the ranger along with the prey it was about to obtain in this airspace, and then slowly crush and devour them!
“Evelyn! Maximum thrust! Crash out!” Excellence roared amidst the violently fluctuating tractor beam; he could clearly sense the terrifying and absolute nature of that spatial imprisonment, as the ship's shield energy readings plummeted like an avalanche!
“Engine overload initiated! Diverting all shield energy to the fore! Maximizing structural integrity support! We—strike!” Evelyn's voice had lost its usual softness, leaving only a cold, metallic resolve.
In that same instant, all the main and auxiliary thruster nozzles at the rear of the 'ranger' erupted with a blazing, dazzling azure flame, like miniature stars! The entire ship seemed to transform into a silver arrow, burning its own essence to break free from its cage at any cost. Abandoning all maneuvers and evasion, it poured every joule of energy into the bow's shields and propulsion systems, charging forward with resolute finality toward the invisible yet indestructible spatial barrier!
“BOOM—ZAP—!!!”
An indescribable roar and shriek erupted simultaneously! It wasn't sound, but a terrifying vibration acting directly on the soul level, produced by the forced tearing of spatial structures and the violent collision of energy and rules! The 'ranger's' bow shield slammed into the invisible spatial barrier, triggering an energy flash brighter than a thousand suns! The ship shuddered violently, every armor plate wailing as the internal lighting cut out instantly, leaving only the emergency red lights flashing frantically! But just after that moment of seemingly eternal torment—
“CRACK—!!!”
A crisp sound, like glass shattering, pierced through all the noise! The invisible, purple-black spatial barrier was forcibly struck by the silver arrow burning with the Power of Order, creating a fleeting rift!
Like a bird breaking free from a spiderweb, the 'ranger' suddenly felt light. Its speed surged instantly, turning into a beam of light as it shot through the rift and plunged into the churning purple-black clouds above!
Almost at the same moment the ship vanished into the clouds, the violently flickering tractor beam finally pulled Excellence, Stardust, and the White Elder's drone safely into the vibrating cabin.
“CLANG!” The heavy alloy hatch slammed shut and locked behind them, completely sealing off the monster's shrieks, the energy explosions, the silent roar of the eye of suffering—filled with resentment and destruction—and that purple-red apocalyptic light.
“Cough! Cough, cough...” Excellence staggered and nearly fell, propping himself against the cold cabin wall with one hand as he coughed violently. Each cough pulled at the searing pain in his chest, and blood seeped from the corner of his mouth again. He felt as if his bones had been disassembled and hastily put back together; he was pained and exhausted everywhere. Stardust also slid to the floor against the cabin wall, her face pale as paper and her chest heaving rapidly. However, her gaze immediately fell upon the specialized containment canister at her waist; only after confirming it was intact did she close her eyes and take several deep breaths. The White Elder's drone hovered silently in the corner, its surface luster dimmed to the extreme, its energy reserves clearly near exhaustion.
“Report... status!” Excellence panted, trying to make his voice sound steady as he looked toward the main console. In the holographic projection, Evelyn's spiritual silhouette was somewhat blurred and flickering; the extreme maneuver just now had clearly placed a massive load on her core.
“Hull... light structural damage, seventeen external sensors failed, main shield generator overloaded and burned out, energy circuits require cooling and maintenance. Main engines severely overheated, forced cooling initiated; high-mobility or secondary overload impossible for seventy-two hours.” Evelyn's voice carried a faint, imperceptible electronic hiss, but her report remained clear. “Successfully escaped the eye of suffering's direct spatial lock and attack range. But... the 'Anchor of Order'...”
The main screen automatically switched to an external view. Through the thinning clouds and the ship's own observation equipment, the tragic scene high above was visible: that dark purple crystal ship, the 'Anchor of Order', was currently like the last stubborn fishing fire in a stormy night. It maneuvered, evaded, and returned fire with extreme difficulty under the siege of dark purple energy torrents—dancing like octopus tentacles—and the constantly opening and closing spatial rifts projected by the eye of suffering. Its hull was already covered in scorch marks and damage, its once elegant and fluid geometric patterns broken and dimmed in many places. The light of its psionic shield flickered like a candle in the wind, clearly at its limit.
“'Anchor of Order', this is the 'ranger'. We have successfully boarded and are evacuating the atmosphere. What is your situation?” Excellence connected the comms, his voice low.
There was a brief silence, with only the roar of energy collisions and the shriek of tearing space as background noise. A few seconds later, that cold, neutral voice sounded again, but more intermittent than ever before, carrying obvious energy overload distortion and an indescribable... calmness:
“Objective One... complete. Source of pollution... purified. Anchor point... destroyed. Descent process... interrupted.”
“Objective Two... in progress. Final interference protocol... initiated.”
“You... immediately... evacuate. This sector... will soon... become unstable.”
“Promise... fulfilled. Data package... sent.”
“Perhaps... we shall meet again.”
The communication cut off abruptly.
Immediately after, on the screen, the 'Anchor of Order' performed an action that took everyone's breath away—it ceased all evasive maneuvers. All remaining complex geometric patterns on its hull contracted inward simultaneously, and then it suddenly erupted with an unprecedented, pure deep-purple light that seemed to condense the very concept of 'Order'! Like the last star moving against the tide, it did not retreat but advanced, resolutely charging into the most unstable, straining purple-black spatial rift in front of the eye of suffering's pupil!
There was no impact, no explosion.
The moment the hull touched the edge of the rift, all the light pulled inward, and then—it bloomed!
A massive, serene deep-purple halo, filled with a strange and harmonious rhythm like an Order Lotus blooming in the universe, instantly expanded with the last position of the 'Anchor of Order' as its center, filling the entire airspace in front of the eye of suffering's pupil! The light was so pure that it temporarily dispersed the surrounding purple-black energy turbulence, making even the giant, evil eye appear blurred and distorted!
“HUMMM—”
A low, majestic psionic harmonic that seemed capable of smoothing all agitation and chaos swept across the battlefield along with that deep purple light! Everywhere it passed, the wildly dancing energy tentacles shattered and were annihilated; the opening and closing spatial rifts were forcibly smoothed and mended; even the eye of suffering itself seemed to be knocked 'back' by this impact containing the powerful concept of Order, letting out a silent roar of shock, pain, and a hint of disbelief!
“That was... using itself as a temporary vessel and amplifier for the concept of 'Order' to perform a one-time, beyond-specification strike on the conceptual level...” Stardust had stood up at some point and was staring at the screen, her voice soft but carrying a nearly solemn tone. “The price... is likely the complete dissociation of its own structure, or falling into an unpredictable... silence.”
In that gradually spreading and slowly fading deep-purple halo, the silhouette of the 'Anchor of Order' had long since vanished, as if it had never existed. There was no wreckage, no fragments, only the lingering resonance of Order still working to neutralize the chaos and stabilize space, proving the resolute manner in which it had fulfilled its promise of 'interference'.
Was it a sacrifice? Or some form of transformation or departure? What did that phrase 'we shall meet again' actually mean?
There was no answer.
Without the final restraint of the 'Anchor of Order', even though space was briefly stabilized, the eye of suffering's desecrated and obstructed rage had climbed to an unimaginable peak! Its giant pupil once again locked onto the 'ranger', which was accelerating out of the atmosphere in an attempt to flee into deep space! This time, the malice and desire for destruction in its gaze were so thick they nearly became a physical curse!
“Lock cleared! Maximum conventional speed! Target: star system's outer edge jump point! Initiate emergency warp pre-charging!” Evelyn's voice carried an unquestionable decisiveness. Simultaneously, all functioning thrusters at the 'ranger's' rear fired at full power. The ship let out a final groan as its speed surged frantically again, like a startled silver flying fish, desperately trying to escape the terrifying 'gaze' behind it, racing for its life toward outer space and the freedom of the deep void!
Behind them, the once-blue Resonance Star, now shrouded in purple-black shadows, shrank rapidly. But in the planet's orbit, that giant eye, seemingly condensed from the deepest nightmares, was like a red-hot iron brand seared into everyone's consciousness. Vaguely, they could still 'hear' that intent crossing through space, filled with extreme malice and greed, coiling around them like a cold viper:
“Mark... inscribed...”
“Escape... is but... a prolonged... prelude to the feast...”
“The shadow... of the end... shall eventually... cover all...”
“Wait... for the return... to the final... silence...”
The 'ranger' finally broke free from the planet's gravitational pull and rushed into the cold, empty interplanetary space. Behind it, that horrific eye seemed constrained by some invisible rule or boundary, unable to move too far from its anchored planetary orbit. Ultimately, it could only slowly fade into the shadows cast by the planet's rotation, carrying a sky-high hatred. However, that soul-chilling 'feeling of being watched' did not dissipate for a long time, as if it had become a mental brand.
Inside the cabin, there was a dead silence. Only the low, steady hum of the engines and the faint hiss of the life-support system reminded them they were still alive. The exhaustion of surviving a disaster flooded everyone like a delayed tsunami.
Excellence slumped into the command chair and closed his eyes, yet he couldn't stop the images from churning in his mind: the pulsing, filthy 'tumor' deep within the planet, the wail of the pure resonance core, the diagrams appearing on the ancient altar, the lonely and urgent intent of the stone of silence, the resolute purple light of their ally, and finally, the eye of suffering's malicious curse that clung like a maggot on a bone... The slight gratification of successfully purifying the source of pollution had long been replaced by the massive price, the heavy unknowns, and a profound exhaustion.
He slowly opened his eyes, his gaze falling on the seemingly peaceful containment canister at Stardust's waist. The canister was cold to the touch; through the specialized material, he could almost feel the absolute 'silence' and... ominousness radiating from the black crystal inside.
“Evelyn,” his voice was hoarse and tired, “set a course for the nearest recorded, uninhabited, and spatially stable peripheral region of a star system. We need time to repair the damage, replenish supplies, and... evaluate our 'harvest'.”
“Command confirmed, Commander.” Evelyn's spiritual light stabilized slightly, her voice returning to its usual softness, though it held a hint of gravity. “Course set. Estimated departure from the current system's primary gravitational influence in fifty-six standard hours, entering the safe warp window. Ship self-diagnostic and repair protocols initiated.”
Stardust silently began to organize the scattered equipment and check the status of their weapons, but her gaze also drifted to the containment canister from time to time, her grey eyes holding a calm scrutiny and unsolved questions. The White Elder's drone was quietly docked on its dedicated charging and maintenance rack, its light extremely faint as if it had fallen into a deep slumber.
The temporary safety brought not relaxation, but a deeper silence mixed with exhaustion, confusion, and a faint unease. The secrets obtained from the planet's core, the direction pointed to by The Whispers in the stone, the mysterious end of their ally, the 'Anchor of Order', and the eye of suffering's prophetic final curse... all of this was like an invisible yet heavy shackle placed upon the 'ranger' and its crew.
Excellence's fingertips unconsciously tapped the armrest of his chair as he looked out the porthole at the boundless starry sky, which now appeared exceptionally empty and cold. The ship was entering its planned cruising orbit; the starlight was normal, yet in his eyes, it seemed covered by a faint shadow from that purple-black eye.
“'Edge of the Source Sea'... 'the gate'...”
He whispered these two keywords captured from the stone of silence's intent, his brow furrowed. Deep within his tired eyes, however, a sharp light began to shine once more.
This rescue and observation mission, which had begun with the echo civilization, seemed to have inadvertently pushed open a door for them leading to a deeper, more dangerous, and more unknowable... dark side of the universe.
And no one knew what lay behind that gate.
The storm had perhaps only just settled its first wave. The true deep sea still lay ahead, waiting in silence.
