165: The "integration" of capabilities and new directions
The pure and warm recharge of 'Family Day' acted like the most effective nutrient, soaking into every inch of soil deep within Excellence's body and mind. As external noise and pressure temporarily receded, his inner peace and sense of security were fully nourished, and a subtle yet profound internal change began to quietly occur within his unique field of ability. He was no longer like a toddler, feeling novelty and panic at every new 'sensation' or 'skill' that appeared; instead, he entered a more calm and reflective state. This internal peace and stability seemed to provide the ideal incubation environment for the evolution of his abilities, prompting him to consciously begin an important integration and sublimation.
He was no longer satisfied with viewing abilities like 'Perception,' 'Resonance Mapping,' and 'Energy Channeling' as separate 'tools' that needed to be called upon individually. His intuition told him that these abilities should share the same root and source, just as hands, eyes, ears, and nose work together to perfectly perceive the world. A bold idea sprouted within him: could he organically weave them together to form a more holistic, instinctive, and powerful way of perceiving and interacting with the outside world? He gave this new method, which he was still groping toward, a name he thought was quite cool—'Holographic Sensing Mode.'
The first attempt to activate this 'Holographic Mode' was, for Excellence, nothing less than an 'overload storm' of sensation and cognition.
He chose to conduct the experiment in a quiet training room. First, he sat cross-legged and closed his eyes, striving to make his breathing long and even as he did during meditation, letting every muscle in his body relax. Then, instead of focusing on a single sensation as he had in the past, he tried to 'open' all of his 'internal receivers' simultaneously:
On the auditory level: He no longer just listened to the content of sounds, but tried his best to distinguish every faint hum in the air (perhaps the sound of distant servers running), the hiss of airflow from the vents, and even the subtle rhythms and frequency changes of his own heartbeat and blood flow. The various sounds were no longer independent notes but were woven into a complex and layered acoustic web that enveloped him.
On the somatosensory level: He mobilized the skin and pores of his entire body to feel the subtle fluctuations in room temperature, the changes in air humidity, and the almost imperceptible vibrations coming from the floor (perhaps footsteps in a distant corridor or the low-frequency operation of equipment).
On the internal resonance level: He activated that unique 'sense of resonance,' extending it outward like invisible tentacles, trying to 'touch' and 'taste' the 'energy atmosphere' of the entire space—was it a lake surface as smooth as a mirror, or a deep sea with surging undercurrents? Was it a warm and bright spring day, or a stagnant and oppressive rainy season?
An attempt at emotional Perception: He even ventured to cast a sliver of attention toward Su Mu, who was sitting nearby reading a book but keeping a constant eye on him, and Evelyn, who was recording data at the console. He vaguely captured a 'field' coming from Su Mu's direction that was warm and relaxed with a hint of concern, while from Evelyn's direction came a 'field' that was highly focused and as cold and precise as a machine.
Initially, this simultaneous influx of massive information was like being suddenly thrown into a newsroom where all channels were playing at maximum volume, or like opening countless eyes at once to watch a high-speed rotating kaleidoscope. Disorganized sounds, touches, energy flows, and emotional fragments were like a flood breaking through a dam, instantly washing away the levees of his consciousness. He felt dizzy, his temples throbbed, and his brain felt like a pile of frantically stirred paste; the intense nausea and mental exhaustion almost made him want to give up immediately. The first attempt lasted less than thirty seconds before he slumped down, pale and gasping for breath, as if he had just run a marathon.
Evelyn, who had been closely monitoring his physiological indicators, immediately noticed his abnormality. She didn't scold or stop him; instead, she keenly realized that this might be a critical and challenging node in the evolution of his abilities. She walked to Excellence's side, handed him a glass of warm water, and began to guide him in a calm and steady tone.
“Excellence, you're doing very well; you're trying to touch a broader world.” Evelyn's voice was like a steady anchor, settling Excellence's chaotic mind. “But you need to learn to manage this information instead of being drowned by it. Imagine you're hearing all the instruments of an orchestra playing at once; you can't try to hear every single note clearly. Instead, you must grasp the main melody and the rhythm.”
She began to teach him techniques for information filtering and priority sorting:
“Ignore the faintest, most constant background noises, like the inherent vibrations of the wall's insulation.”
“Simplify the airflow changes felt by your skin into arrows in your mind that have direction and intensity.”
“Imagine the energy flows captured by your sense of resonance as mist flowing with different colors and densities.”
“Most importantly, set a ‘focus’ for your current task. For example, if our task now is to perceive the overall state of the room's environment, then the information most relevant to this task—such as ventilation and the operation of major equipment—is the primary information; everything else is background noise.”
Evelyn also introduced more abstract data processing concepts. She had Excellence try to convert various sensations into more symbolic 'data streams,' such as converting sound frequencies into undulating waveforms and temperature changes into numerical scales, performing rapid integration and pattern recognition in his consciousness like a biological computer processing multiple input signals.
The process was exceptionally difficult, filled with repeated failures and a sense of frustration. Excellence often lost his way in the ocean of information, feeling discouraged and self-doubting. But Evelyn was extremely patient, and Su Mu always provided warm encouragement and snack rewards whenever he felt disheartened. Under continuous practice and scientific guidance, Excellence gradually found the knack. He learned to tune his 'reception sensitivity' like adjusting a radio knob and learned to build temporary 'pontoons' and 'filters' within the torrent of information.
Hard work pays off. As Excellence gradually mastered the preliminary ability to integrate multi-source information, this 'Holographic Sensing' mode began to demonstrate astonishing practical value and unique insight.
Precision in environmental prediction: Once, while looking up materials in the library, Excellence suddenly looked up and said to Su Mu, who was tidying the bookshelves, “Class Monitor, that vent on the left will increase its airflow in about three minutes. You’d better use a paperweight on those lightweight materials next to you.” Su Mu was skeptical but did as he said. Sure enough, two minutes and fifty seconds later, the hum of increased wind power came from that vent as expected, and the airflow grew significantly. While other materials were blown about, only the stack Su Mu had weighted down remained undisturbed. Excellence's explanation was that he had synthetically captured the subtle premonitory changes in the air conditioner compressor's operating frequency, the sense of pressure accumulation before the airflow accelerated in specific ducts, and the brief 'stagnation' of energy flow at the valve nodes, thus making a comprehensive judgment.
Deepening of emotional insight: He could now more accurately distinguish the nature of Su Mu's fatigue. If it was just physical tiredness, the 'field' he perceived was a uniform, slightly heavy sense of weariness, like a warm blanket wrapping around a slow heartbeat. But if Su Mu was hiding some unspoken worry or concern, her 'field' would be mixed with a very subtle, high-frequency flickering 'anxiety ripple,' like a small vortex hidden beneath a calm lake surface. This allowed him to more considerately choose whether to hand her a cup of ginseng tea, just sit with her quietly, or tell a little joke to make her happy.
Sharpness in anomaly detection: In the most amazing instance, while passing through a corridor, he suddenly stopped and pointed to a floor tile, saying, “Sister Evelyn, underneath here... it seems like a ‘small blood vessel’ is quietly ‘crying.’” Maintenance personnel later pried up that floor tile to check and indeed found an extremely tiny leak in an old underground water supply pipe. The amount of water seepage was minimal and had not yet caused wet spots on the surface, but it would have wasted water in the long run. Excellence described what he 'saw' as a very small but persistent 'low-lying vortex' appearing in the energy flow beneath that area, as if something was slowly 'sucking away' energy. This energy-mapping Perception of microscopic physical anomalies exceeded even certain periodic instrument inspections in its sensitivity and foresight.
This 'fusion' of abilities marked Excellence's growth into a brand-new stage of greater strategic value. He evolved from a passive receiver of information to a participant who could actively intervene in tiny systems, and then leaped to becoming a 'living sensor network' capable of integrating multi-source information for comprehensive situational awareness. Although this was still very far from direct 'combat' or 'defense' applications, this comprehensive, sharp, and near-intuitive Perception ability undoubtedly held incalculable value in optimizing daily life, providing early warning for safety hazards, and identifying the complex, hidden threats he might face in the future that would require high levels of insight.
Evelyn placed high importance on this new potential Excellence displayed. She quickly shifted the focus of training from the refinement of single abilities to 'contextualized comprehensive applications' that promoted the synergy of multiple abilities.
She meticulously designed a series of 'contextual puzzles' that required the use of 'Holographic Sensing' to solve, packaging these training sessions as engaging 'detective games,' which greatly stimulated Excellence's interest and competitiveness.
For example, in a simulated warehouse environment, she would hide an 'anomaly source' (a disguised small device) that emitted a specific frequency of faint sound waves, dissipated abnormal heat, and carried a unique energy signature. Excellence was required to be blindfolded and, relying solely on 'Holographic Sensing,' accurately locate this 'anomaly source' within a time limit in a warehouse filled with various background noises and distractions. This required him to synthetically use hearing, heat sensing, and energy Perception, and to effectively filter out a large amount of background interference such as machine operation and ventilation airflow.
In another example, she set up a simple domino-style or series-circuit chain reaction device, but intentionally included several extremely hidden 'weak links' or 'logical traps' that could cause the chain to break. Without directly observing the structure of the device, Excellence had to predict the final result of the entire chain reaction—and even point out the most likely link to fail—by perceiving the transmission path, speed changes, and potential 'blockage points' or 'abnormal diversions' of energy or information within the device.
These training sessions were no longer dull repetitions but were filled with the joy of challenge and discovery. Excellence never tired of them, often forgetting to eat or sleep to crack a difficult problem. In the process of successfully 'solving cases' time and again, his ability for information integration and pattern recognition was greatly tempered.
At the same time, Evelyn also began to prudently and gradually introduce Excellence to some of the most basic and core concepts of information theory, systems theory, and complexity science. She knew that perceptual experience alone was not enough; he needed a rational framework to help him better understand and master such complex abilities.
She never used obscure terminology but instead used the most vivid metaphors to link abstract theories closely with his own personal experiences:
She compared the flow of information to a 'river,' the amount of information to the 'water volume,' and information redundancy to the 'silt in the river,' and Excellence needed to learn how to 'pan for gold in the silt.'
She compared a system (such as the ventilation system, or even his own body) to a 'precision clock' composed of many interconnected 'gears' (components); systems theory was about teaching him to understand 'how a tiny deviation in one gear affects the timing of the entire clock through linkage.'
She used the 'Butterfly Effect' to explain how tiny initial conditions can lead to massive consequences through complex interactions, which perfectly aligned with the importance of his ability to perceive tiny leaks or subtle changes in emotion.
Evelyn never required him to memorize formulas or concepts by rote but encouraged him to compare and verify these 'seeds of thought' with each of his perceptual experiences. Excellence would sometimes listen and have a sudden realization, clapping his hands in excitement; at other times, he would knit his brows and sink into long periods of deep thought. Most of the time, he only half-understood, but those scientific 'seeds' had already been quietly sown in his mind—which was exceptionally fertile due to his rich experiences—nourishing each other with his extraordinary perceptual abilities, waiting for future germination and growth.
Once, after successfully cracking a high-difficulty contextual puzzle involving triple disguises of sound, heat, and energy along with dynamic interference, Excellence's little face was flushed with excitement and his eyes were sparkling. He flew to Evelyn's side like a happy little bird, gesturing wildly as he described his brand-new experience:
“Sister Evelyn! I feel like I’m ‘seeing’ things now... it’s not just with my eyes anymore! It’s with... with my whole body, and lots of ‘little radars’ in my head, ‘seeing’ together! I seem to be able to ‘see’ many things that eyes can’t see, and they... they combine themselves into a big, moving, colorful picture! It’s like... like there’s a super powerful projector in my head!”
Looking at his face, which was filled with pure joy from the expansion of his cognitive boundaries, an incredibly gratified and appreciative smile appeared on Evelyn's face. It was the joy of seeing a precious seedling break through the soil and face the sunlight. She gently patted his shoulder, her tone full of encouragement and expectation:
“That is the true charm of Systems Thinking and perceptual fusion, Excellence. You are using your own strength to push open a door to a richer, more three-dimensional, and more wonderful world. Continue to explore bravely and cautiously; you will constantly find that the boundaries of your own world are far broader and deeper than any of us imagined.”
A new dimension of ability had opened up, like a more grand and magnificent scroll slowly unfolding before Excellence. This provided a broader space for imagination and a more solid foundation for his future, which was already full of infinite possibilities. This growth toward a higher level of integration, nurtured in tranquility, care, and scientific guidance, was also quietly accumulating an internal, profound, and incalculable strength for the even more magnificent challenges he was destined to face in the future.
