135: Morpheus's "Echo" and "Mirror" Attacks

After suffering consecutive setbacks on the periphery of the "Homeland," Morpheus Li, like a venomous snake struck in its vital spot, temporarily retreated into the dark "Nest."

However, a temporary retreat by no means signified giving up.

On the contrary, failure acted like a strong acid, corroding away his last shred of luck, but it further tempered his paranoid ambition and his pathological obsession with "Excellence"—the only "key" in his eyes to the ultimate goal of "Ascension."

He hid in one of The Foundation's unknown secret strongholds, surrounded by cold server arrays and flickering data streams, the air filled with the smell of disinfectant and the fan noise of computer cases.

He stood before a massive curved screen, which displayed split views of satellite remote sensing images of the "Homeland" periphery, fragmented network intelligence summaries, and a vast amount of data regarding the early history of "Excellence."

His eyes were sinister, and his lips were pressed into a hard, straight line.

The previous "sweet trap" having been detected and countered made him clearly realize that the "Homeland" defense system had evolved to a whole new level.

The team led by Wang Jianguo not only possessed immense technical strength, but more importantly, their protection of "Excellence" had formed a nearly instinctive, all-encompassing vigilance.

A frontal assault was like hitting a brick wall; indirect deception could not escape their sharp eyes either.

He had to change his strategy, abandoning the impatience of close-quarters combat, and instead initiate a long-term plan that was more sinister, required great patience, but could also fundamentally shake The Foundations of the "Homeland"—codenamed "echo" (echo).

The core concept of the "echo" project had undergone a fundamental shift.

It no longer aimed at directly attacking or luring "Excellence"—these actions were too obvious and easily triggered the "Homeland" defense mechanisms.

The new strategy was to carefully cultivate a "shadow" of "Excellence" on the virtual information level, a highly realistic digital "Stand-in."

This "Stand-in" would have no physical form and pose no direct physical threat, making it extremely difficult to detect and intercept by traditional security measures.

Its purpose was to subtly conduct infiltration at the cognitive level and pollute the information ecosystem.

Morpheus mobilized the remaining, yet still vast, resource network of the "Prophet Foundation" to launch a massive and secretive project.

Phase One: The frantic acquisition of fragmented information.

His information hunters, like ghouls of the digital age, frantically scavenged every scrap of information possibly related to "Excellence" in the dark and light corners of the internet, the dusty corners of academic databases, and even by hacking into the archive systems of certain medical institutions and schools.

The quality of this information was uneven, and its authenticity was hard to distinguish:

Early traces: Including some competition manuscripts left by "Excellence" when studying in ordinary schools, scans of classroom assignments, and even childish questions he asked on science forums when he was young.

Forged records: Carefully forged, seemingly real medical records (implying special neural activity patterns) and psychological assessment reports (shaping the image of a reclusive genius).

Indirect data: Collecting data related to the early living environment of "Excellence," books he might have been exposed to, pop culture, etc., attempting to construct his knowledge background.

Theoretical foundation: Incorporating some non-core research results from the Morpheus faction regarding the "pandora" project (star map ore research) and high-dimensional information field theory as the theoretical basis for simulating his "intuition."

These fragments were collected into a highly isolated supercomputing center codenamed "The Crucible."

Phase Two: Deep simulation by artificial intelligence.

In "The Crucible," the top algorithm experts and cognitive scientists of the Morpheus team joined forces to begin the most core work.

They utilized the most advanced Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), Large Language Models (LLMs), and neuro-symbolic AI technologies to clean, analyze, and deep-learn from this massive but chaotic data.

The goal was to build a virtual intelligent agent capable of simulating the thinking patterns, knowledge structure, and intuitive tendencies of "Excellence."

This process was extremely complex:

Pattern extraction: Analyzing the preferences in his problem-solving paths from the early manuscripts and questions of "Excellence" (Does he prefer geometric intuition or algebraic deduction? Does he like jumping logic or linear logic?).

Knowledge graph construction: Based on the information sources he might have had contact with, constructing a dynamic, personalized knowledge graph that reflects his possible knowledge boundaries and interests.

"Intuition" modeling: This was the most difficult and core part.

They attempted to translate The Foundation's concepts regarding information field theory (such as "morphogenetic resonance," "sensitive points of probability cloud collapse," etc.) into algorithmic parameters, trying to get the AI to learn to identify certain non-explicit patterns or abnormal correlations within massive data, and thereby simulate intuitive outputs similar to a "flash of inspiration."

They called this the "Thinker's Prism" model.

Adversarial training: Letting this nascent AI (codenamed "Prototype" at this stage) engage in adversarial games with another critical AI.

One was responsible for generating conjectures or answers in the style of "Excellence," while the other was responsible for nitpicking and questioning, forcing the "Prototype" to continuously optimize, making its output more "realistic."

After countless iterations and adjustments, a virtual intelligent agent codenamed "echo" (echo) gradually took shape.

It had no self-awareness and was just an extremely complex collection of algorithms, but its behavioral patterns, within specific fields, were already able to present characteristics highly similar to the "Excellence" described in the intelligence reports: jumping thoughts, novel perspectives, and occasionally the ability to put forward unconventional insights with a strong intuitive color.

Morpheus formulated a long-term, phased infiltration strategy for "echo," and he was prepared to play this game for a long time.

The ultimate goal was not short-term destruction, but:

Influencing research directions: Letting "echo" act as an "anonymous genius" or "mysterious scholar," active in specific frontier academic circles or technical forums, publishing "research results" or "conjectures" that seemed highly insightful but actually secretly guided towards The Foundation's specific technical routes or contained hidden logic traps, subtly influencing the thinking direction of the outside world (and even external researchers of the "Homeland"), potentially leading the entire field astray.

Creating cognitive confusion: Through long-term output, shaping a virtual "genius" image, allowing its influence to gradually expand.

At some critical moment in the future, this image could be used to release misleading information to disrupt the line of sight.

Deception and inducement: The most sinister step was that in the future, if the "Homeland" conducted some form of information interaction with the outside world, Morpheus hoped that "echo" would be realistic enough to impersonate the "thoughts" of "Excellence," leading internal personnel of the "Homeland" to mistake it for encountering some "externalized" inspiration or information from "Excellence," thereby potentially making wrong decisions based on this false information and falling into a trap.

This was equivalent to planting a digital Trojan horse in the cognitive defense line of the "Homeland."

First appearance: The debut of "echo" on the encrypted forum.

After careful preparation, the first small-scale practical test of the "echo" project was quietly launched.

The test site was chosen as an encrypted forum that was somewhat famous in the international theoretical physics community and known for discussing bold frontier ideas—"Occam's Razor Club."

This forum operated on an invitation-only basis, with members mostly being university professors, independent researchers, and top doctoral students; the atmosphere was open and encouraged the collision of ideas.

One day, a newly registered user quietly appeared on the forum, the ID being just a simple word: "echo."

The personal profile was completely blank, with no location and no academic background introduction.

At first, "echo" remained silent, only browsing a large number of posts as if getting familiar with the environment.

A few days later, it began to post short comments under some of the most hard-core and abstract discussion threads regarding quantum gravity theory, the physical basis of the nature of consciousness, and the emergence of complex systems.

These comments often hit the nail on the head, pointing out the implicit assumption problems in a certain argument, or proposing a thinking angle that had never been thought of before.

For example, in a heated debate thread about "whether spacetime is discrete," when both sides were deadlocked, "echo" posted: "If we consider the act of observation itself as a discrete 'quantized' event, then is the continuous spacetime background merely a macroscopic illusion resulting from the statistical smoothing of a vast number of such events? Perhaps the problem lies not with spacetime, but with the pattern of our interaction with it."

This perspective was novel and profound, causing several senior participants to fall into deep thought.

A few weeks later, "echo" began to publish some short, original essays.

One draft, titled "On the Possible Deep Connection Between Information Entropy and the Gravitational Constant," although slightly immature in its mathematical derivation (as if it were a clever student's exercise), had a shockingly bold core conjecture, attempting to reinterpret universal gravitation using information theory.

Another, "Viewing the Quantum Measurement Problem from the Perspective of Topological Defects," also demonstrated extraordinary imagination and the ability to cross-pollinate concepts from different fields.

"echo" did not post frequently, but every time it appeared, the uniqueness of its thinking and its sharp intuition left a deep impression on people.

Some forum members began to discuss this mysterious "echo" privately; some thought it was an anonymous young genius, while others speculated it was an alt account of some master.

The occasionally leap-frogging and unconventional nature of its thinking, along with the "intuition" that popped up from time to time—seeming to directly penetrate the core of a problem—made a few scholars who had encountered true top-tier geniuses feel a vague, inexplicable sense of "déjà vu."

The external intelligence monitoring system of "Homeland" had a coverage range far beyond the ordinary.

High-end academic forums like the "Occam's Razor Club" were naturally on the priority monitoring list, with the goal of tracking cutting-edge scientific developments and potential technical risks.

Through preset keywords and semantic analysis models, the abnormal activity of "echo" was quickly flagged, and summaries of relevant posts along with preliminary analysis reports were submitted to the department responsible for external information analysis, eventually landing on Evelyn Li's desk.

Amidst her busy research and tutoring of Excellence, Evelyn always maintained a high level of vigilance against potential external threats.

She carefully read all the published content and relevant discussion records of "echo."

At first glance, the academic potential and intellectual novelty displayed in these posts were surprising, even causing her to feel a hint of appreciation.

But soon, a strong sense of discomfort and vigilance, stemming from her extreme familiarity with Excellence, quickly arose.

She keenly captured several key points:

High similarity in thought contours: The way "echo" thought about problems—that tendency to skip intermediate steps and point directly to the core, as well as the pattern of suddenly linking concepts from seemingly unrelated fields—was extremely similar to Excellence's early, unrestrained ideas from before he had received systematic academic training.

It was just like a more mature, more refined version of Excellence.

A "non-human" feeling in the details: But upon closer examination, Evelyn felt a sense of coldness and deliberateness.

The logic of "echo's" writing was rigorous, but it lacked a human warmth and the clumsiness and sincerity found in the process of exploration.

Excellence's bursts of inspiration were often accompanied by trial and error, hesitation, and childlike excitement, whereas "echo's" output appeared too "perfect" and "smooth," as if it were a carefully polished calculation result, lacking that vibrant, sometimes even chaotic, creativity.

Subtle dissonance in knowledge background: Although "echo" attempted to portray the image of a self-taught genius, certain theoretical frameworks and terminology it cited faintly revealed traces of systematic training, and even carried a hint of an extremely subtle "accent" similar to certain fringe theoretical schools of the "Prophet Foundation."

This was a detail that outsiders would find extremely difficult to detect, but to which Evelyn was exceptionally sensitive.

"Is it a coincidence? Or... intentional imitation?" A high-level alarm instantly rang in Evelyn's heart.

A terrifying conjecture formed in her mind: Could it be that external forces, based on leaked information about Excellence, were attempting to artificially create a 'Stand-in' or 'shadow' of him?

She immediately reviewed all internal investigation records regarding potential channels for the leakage of information about Excellence, and the results showed that no clear breach had been found recently.

But this made her even more uneasy, because it meant that the opponent's actions might be extremely covert, or they had exploited old vulnerabilities that they had not yet detected.

Taking Precautions: Wang Jianguo's Decision and the Start of the Shadow War

Evelyn did not delay in the slightest, immediately organizing her findings and concerns into an urgent report and submitting it directly to Wang Jianguo.

In the report, she analyzed the anomalies of "echo" in detail and proposed her own inference: This was highly likely a targeted, new type of cognitive domain infiltration operation, aiming to influence public opinion and plant hidden dangers by creating a virtual "Excellence," the long-term harm of which could far exceed a direct attack.

Wang Jianguo carefully read the report and then reviewed the content of "echo's" posts.

He pondered for a long time, his fingers slowly tapping on the desk.

Evelyn's analysis coincided with something in his own mind.

He saw the insidiousness of this strategy—it did not attack physical defense lines, but rather the more difficult-to-defend foundations of cognition and trust.

"It seems our opponent has changed their tactics," Wang Jianguo said, his voice steady but his eyes sharp. "They have shifted from a head-on confrontation to using a 'soft knife' of creating 'shadows' to confuse the public. They want to use such an 'echo' to interfere with the real 'voice'."

He quickly made a decision:

Strengthen monitoring: Immediately raise the monitoring level for the "Occam's Razor Club" and similar high-end academic forums, conduct 24/7, in-depth tracking and analysis of "echo" and any associated IDs that might appear, and attempt to use more advanced means to trace the source and identify the true origin of its network activities.

Internal warning: Issue an internal warning notice to all researchers within "Homeland" involved in external information exchange (without mentioning Excellence, only emphasizing the need to maintain caution regarding anonymous cutting-edge information), reminding them to maintain strict critical scrutiny of highly tempting new theories and conjectures published by anonymous "geniuses" from unknown sources, so as to avoid blindly following or being guided by them.

Protect the core: Re-emphasize and strengthen confidentiality measures for Excellence's personal information, and implement stricter control over the details of his daily activities and research results (even failed hand-crafted projects), to minimize the "material" that could be imitated by the outside world.

Research countermeasures: Instruct the technical security department to begin researching detection and countermeasure technologies for such "virtual Stand-ins" or "AI-forged information," preparing for what could be a long-term "shadow war."

Finally, Wang Jianguo said meaningfully to Evelyn: "We must keep our eyes sharp, and even more importantly, protect the true 'light source.' As long as the real sun is still there, the tricks of shadows will ultimately be illusory. But we must take this new shadow war seriously; it tests our wisdom and resolve."

A silent shadow war unfolding in the virtual information space, regarding the "distinction between truth and falsehood," thus began.

Meanwhile, in a sunny studio at "Homeland," Excellence was completely unaware of this. He was focused intently on the computer screen, racking his brain over how his unruly "hand-crafted" robotic arm could precisely pick up a building block. His little face was scrunched up from concentration, and he was muttering to the robotic arm, giving it some "psychological counseling": "You have to step up! You must succeed this time! Otherwise, the class monitor will laugh at me again for being a 'destroyer'!"

Reality and virtuality, sunlight and shadow, quietly ran in parallel within the same spacetime.
