302: Chapter 303 Cracks, Speculation and Choices

Inside the ranger's bridge, the air seemed to solidify. Outside the viewport, the Silent Corridor's eternally unchanging silver-gray hue now appeared to be shrouded in a cold, ominous shadow. The broken yet chilling warning from the ancient past, like a colossal stone dropped into still water, didn't create ripples, but a vortex capable of swallowing everything.

"Fallen," "traitor," "key stolen," "echo distorted," "do not trust"... Each word was like a heavy hammer striking everyone's hearts. Stardust's gray eyes rapidly scanned through data streams, her fingertips unconsciously digging into her palm, leaving several shallow, crescent-shaped red marks. Evelyn's spiritual projection subtly rippled, as if assailed by an invisible cold current. White Elder's wooden carving cast mottled shadows on the control panel, his cloudy eyes, however, glowed astonishingly bright, as if piercing through the mists of time.

S-001's warning still echoed in their ears—"Highest priority event," "Deep Defense," "Security Review." The AI's advice was calm, objective, and logical. Facing a system that might collapse from within, the existence of a "traitor," and the terrifying prospect of the "key" being stolen, no amount of caution was too much.

But Excellence's heart felt as if it had been plunged into ice water. He looked at Mute, whose crystal fragments were flashing violently and erratically, like a candle about to burn out. Mute's consciousness fluctuated like a small boat in a storm, filled with Chaos, pain, and an indescribable... fear? Guilt? Or had some forgotten taboo been triggered?

"Senior Mute?" Excellence called out in a deep voice, trying to calm him down.

"No... I don't know... I can't remember..." Mute's voice was intermittent, the light of the fragments flickering on and off, as if it could extinguish at any moment. "It feels... terrible... like something... screaming in my head... No, it's many people screaming... Chaos... betrayal... fire... No, not fire, it's... it's something colder... the the gate... the the gate is trembling..."

His words were fragmented, filled with disjointed images and Perceptions. Excellence could "feel" that those keywords were like a rusty key, forcibly prying open the iron the gate deep within Mute's consciousness. Behind the the gate lay blood and fire buried by time.

"S-001! Stabilize Senior Mute's consciousness! Activate the highest level of mental protection!" Stardust's voice carried a rare urgency.

Invisible energy flowed from the direction of the heart of silence, gently but firmly enveloping Mute's fragments. The frequency of the light's flickering gradually slowed, but still revealed an uneasy tremor. Mute's fragment light stabilized somewhat, yet appeared dimmer, as if some life force had been drained from it.

"He is experiencing a deep memory association impact. The keywords in the warning message have resonated strongly with his blocked memory fragments. The impact is subsiding, but some memory fragments may be activating or reorganizing. The process carries risk and may lead to unstable consciousness structure," S-001's voice remained steady, yet carried an unprecedented gravity.

Excellence's gaze shifted from Mute, sweeping over Stardust and Evelyn. Stardust's brows were tightly furrowed, data streams rapidly churning in her gray eyes, like a captain searching for a course in a storm. Evelyn's projection subtly fluctuated, indicating intense calculations in her core program; her fingers moved across the light screen so fast they almost left afterimages.

"What do you think?" Excellence's voice was somewhat hoarse; he forced himself to calm down and began to untangle this mess. The metal walls of the bridge gleamed coldly under the dim blue light, reflecting his tense jawline.

"Too little information, but the implications are extremely dangerous," Stardust said first, her voice regaining its usual calmness, but her speaking speed was astonishingly fast. "Firstly, it can basically be confirmed that the Silent Corridor network, or rather, some facility or facilities originating from this network, experienced a severe crisis at some point in the past. A facility 'fell.' The reason for its fall is directly related to a 'traitor' and the 'key being stolen.'"

She brought up a holographic projection, displaying the key information of the ancient signal on the central light screen of the bridge. "'Fallen'—indicates that this facility was forcibly breached by some power, not naturally disintegrated. 'Traitor'—internal personnel. 'key stolen'—critical control authority was pilfered. 'echo distorted'—information transmission system was tampered with. 'Do not trust'—core warning."

"What was the identity of this 'traitor'?" Evelyn's voice carried a hint of imperceptible tremor. "Was it one of the watchers? An administrator like Senior Mute? Or an entity within the Main System? Or... some other 'Order-aligned' member related to this system that we don't yet know about?"

"All are possible," Stardust nodded, her fingertip tracing a thin line of light on the screen. "What is the function of the 'key'? From Epsilon-3's information and previous records, it's likely related to activating the echo, communicating with the Main System, or some deeper core function concerning the the gate and the 'silent' network. If the 'key' falls into enemy hands..."

"It could lead to the core functions of that facility being destroyed, tampered with, or even inversely exploited," Excellence interjected, his face looking even worse. He could feel the temperature of his palms dropping. He instinctively clenched his fists, his fingernails digging deep into his flesh.

"The logical chain holds," White Elder's aged voice slowly sounded, carrying the weight of one who has seen through the world, as if recounting a story sealed for millennia. "An insider causing trouble, stealing the core, disrupting the central hub, spreading false messages, inviting wolves into the house... These are common calamities across all realms. Looking at this information, the words 'do not trust' are particularly shocking. Is it a warning not to trust that 'traitor'? Or not to trust the information transmitted by the distorted echo? Or... neither can be trusted?"

"Then... which facility sent that warning?" Excellence asked, his voice so low it was almost swallowed by the hum of the bridge.

"Cannot be determined," Stardust brought up the analysis results, and a blurry star map appeared on the light screen. "The signal is too fragmented; both sender and receiver identifiers are damaged. Its encryption method has 17% similarity with the system's underlying protocol, indicating a common origin, but it is much older. It could be an earlier corridor unit, or even... a different type of facility directly under the Main System, unlike conventional corridors. Its 'fall' may have occurred tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of standard cycles ago, long before Epsilon-3 sent that delayed message, and long before Senior Mute's amnesia and the Main System's loss of contact."

An older facility, possibly fallen for countless ages, sent a warning in its final moments. And this warning, after enduring unimaginable erosion by time and Chaos, was coincidentally received by them. The probability was incredibly low. Yet, the content of this warning was so grave.

"If this warning is true," Excellence took a deep breath, his chest feeling as if it were filled with cold iron blocks, "that means the Silent Corridor network, or the 'Order' power it represents, may have had problems internally for a long time. A 'traitor' existed and succeeded. So, Senior Mute's amnesia, his talk of being 'optimized' and 'stabbed in the back,' the Main System's loss of contact, and even various corridor units entering 'silent dormancy'... do these events also hide the shadow of this 'traitor,' or the forces associated with the 'traitor'?"

This speculation sent shivers down everyone's spines. The temperature on the bridge seemed to drop a few more degrees.

"S-001," Stardust turned to the main console, her voice unusually calm, "Are there more detailed records in the database regarding the background and specific content of the 'silent dormancy' command issuance, and the execution records of various corridor units after receiving the command? Specifically, are there any records about 'internal security threats,' 'review mechanisms,' or 'abnormal unit reports'?"

S-001 was silent for a few seconds; the bridge lights seemed to dim for an instant. "Searching... Relevant record permissions are too high, or have been permanently deleted or deeply encrypted according to the 'Information Purification' sub-clause of the 'Silent Dormancy' protocol. Under current permissions, only a general announcement summary is accessible: 'To ensure the stability of the 'Order Domain' borders and respond to potential pan-domain crises, the 'Silent Dormancy' protocol is now activated. All units shall immediately reduce energy consumption, conceal themselves, prioritize maintaining the gate stability, and await further instructions. Without a specific 'Awakening Key' from the 'Eternal Tribunal'/'Balance Council,' no unit shall actively emit high-energy signals or attempt to restore regular communication.'"

"Without a specific 'Awakening Key,' no unit shall actively emit high-energy signals..." Excellence repeated the phrase, his face changing. "Then our previous status report..."

"Report energy level complies with 'low-power stealth' standards and does not contain an 'Awakening Key'; theoretically, it does not violate this announcement summary," S-001 replied. "However, the announcement does not clearly define the threshold for 'high-energy signals.' Our report may be at a critical point. Furthermore... the announcement does not mention 'internal review' or 'abnormal reporting' mechanisms, which is inconsistent with standard crisis response protocols."

"It's like... a generic email that only emphasizes 'hide, don't move, wait for news,' but doesn't tell employees how to identify intruders or who to report abnormalities to," Mute's voice weakly sounded, the light of his fragments flickering faintly like a candle in the wind. "This is very abnormal. Normally, issuing such a long-term dormancy command would definitely be accompanied by a series of measures like internal review, security identification, and emergency contact changes. But all we see now are the most general requirements."

"Perhaps the relevant measures are in a higher-level directive, and our permissions are insufficient," Stardust analyzed. "Or perhaps... these measures were deliberately simplified or deleted. If the 'traitor' has already infiltrated to a level where they can influence the issuance of directives..."

She didn't finish, but the meaning was clear. The bridge lights seemed to dim even further.

"Then our current situation..." Evelyn's voice carried a trace of unease. "We received that warning, and we know about the 'traitor' and the 'key being stolen.' S-001, does this information need to, or can it be, reported to the Main System? If we can still contact it?"

This time, S-001 was silent for even longer. Only the faint hum of energy flow remained in the bridge.

"Logical conflict. According to the 'Silent Dormancy' basic protocol, significant potential threats (including internal threats) should be reported to the Main System. However, the 'do not trust' warning also clearly indicates a risk of unreliable information. Furthermore, the current communication channel with the Main System is one-way and unstable. Sending any report containing this warning information (especially keywords like 'traitor,' 'key') carries the risk of interception by unknown parties (potentially including the 'traitor' or their associated forces). Risk assessment: High. Recommendation: Temporarily defer reporting, prioritize internal security assessment and information verification."

Internal security assessment... information verification... What verifiable information did they have at hand now? A vague, delayed message (Epsilon-3), an older, more fragmented warning signal, some scattered database records, and Mute's incomplete, pain-filled memory fragments.

"We need more information," Excellence said decisively, his voice echoing through the bridge. "About the 'traitor,' about the 'key,' about the fallen facility, about the truth of 'silent dormancy.' We need to know who we should trust and who we shouldn't. Epsilon-3's message told us to 'beware of listeners' and 'await true Resonance.' And the older warning told us to 'do not trust.' Are these two messages contradictory? Or do they point to different layers of danger?"

"Epsilon-3's message focuses on external threats (listeners) and waiting for the right moment (true Resonance)," Stardust clarified. "The Ancient Warning focuses on internal threats (traitor, key stolen) and information security (do not trust). The two are not directly contradictory; in fact, they can be complementary: externally, there are 'listeners' searching for the 'key' and the 'echo,' while internally, there may be a 'traitor' who has already succeeded and might be using the distorted 'echo' to do something. We need to be vigilant against both internal and external threats simultaneously."

“What is the true 'Resonance'?” Mute murmured, the light of the fragment flickering faintly. “Is it a recall command from the Main System? Or some kind of... secure verification mechanism that requires specific conditions to trigger?”

No one could answer. Only heavy breathing remained on the bridge.

“S-001,” Excellence decided, his voice carrying an undeniable resolution, “First, execute Deep Defense. Raise the alert level for the ranger and our current area, applying the highest level of filtering and scrutiny to all incoming and outgoing data streams. Second, conduct a more detailed inspection and protection of Elder Mute's consciousness fragments, attempting to help him organize the triggered memory fragments without causing further Chaos, to see if we can find more clues. Third, under the premise of ensuring safety and not generating any signals that could be detected by 'the listeners' or potential 'Traitor,' use the signal characteristics we currently possess, derived from Epsilon-3 and the Ancient Warning, to perform passive, covert data comparison and environmental scanning within the database and the corridor, checking for any residual signals or related physical traces.”

He paused, his gaze sweeping over the group before finally resting on the massive, silent “the gate” outside the viewport—that huge, black the gate that seemed capable of swallowing everything. “Finally, we need to reassess everything related to the ‘the gate’ and to ‘Chaos.’ The Ancient Warning mentioned the ‘key being stolen.’ If the ‘key’ is truly related to the ‘the gate’ or the ‘echo,’ then could the stolen ‘key’ cause some change in the ‘the gate’ that we haven't yet noticed? Are the anomalies deep within ‘Chaos,’ including the activity of the Heart-Devouring Demon and the presence of ‘the listeners,’ also related to the loss of the ‘key’?”

“Instructions recorded, risk assessment updating.” S-001 responded quickly, and the bridge lights brightened slightly. “Deep Defense protocol initiated. Monitoring of the heart of silence and core network nodes will be strengthened, and any non-standard signals or energy fluctuations will be flagged. Protective isolation and auxiliary sorting procedures initiated for the watchers Mute's consciousness fragments. Covert Data Comparison and Environmental Scanning Procedure initiated, priority set to highest. Comprehensive rescan of the ‘the gate’ and surrounding Chaos energy state, establishing a more detailed comparative baseline.”

“We need to act too.” Stardust looked at Excellence, a sharp glint in her gray eyes. “The ‘Traitor’ and the ‘key being stolen’ mentioned in the ancient signal are major variables. Our previous plan needs adjustment. Besides improving our own strength, we must now prioritize ‘Internal Security’ and ‘Information Verification.’ Any external information, whether it's a signal suspected of coming from another corridor, or any future instruction claiming to be from the Main System, must be treated with the highest level of suspicion.”

“What about training? And the mission to repair the corridor structure?” Evelyn asked.

“Training continues. We need to master our strength as quickly as possible to deal with threats that might come from any direction. Repair missions... will be selective, prioritizing the repair of structures related to core monitoring and defense. Other non-urgent tasks are postponed.” Excellence replied.

He looked at Mute, softening his voice slightly: “Elder, how are you feeling now? Regarding your memory...”

The light of Mute's fragment stabilized slightly but remained dim. “Chaotic... very chaotic. Many broken images, sounds, feelings... but they won't connect. ‘Traitor’... that word makes me especially uncomfortable. It's like... like I once trusted someone deeply, and then was... no, I can't remember the details. The ‘key’... I feel some sense of responsibility for the ‘key,’ something very important that I must protect... but the thing I was protecting, it seems to have finally...” His voice carried a hint of pain and confusion again.

“Don't rush, take your time.” Excellence comforted him, but his heart grew heavier. Mute's reaction seemed to confirm the authenticity of the Ancient Warning and hinted that his amnesia might conceal painful experiences related to the “Traitor” and the “key.”

“S-001, when assisting Elder Mute in sorting his memories, please pay special attention to any fragments, no matter how broken, related to concepts such as 'betrayal,' 'internal conflict,' 'Key Anomaly,' or 'Echo Distortion.'” Excellence added, his voice low. “At the same time, cross-verify and logically analyze all sorted information, paying attention to identifying any possible contradictions, tampering, or suggestive information.”

“Understood. The highest level of Information Authenticity Protocol will be initiated, including logical paradox detection, emotional consistency analysis, and memory fragment spatiotemporal coordinate verification.” S-001 replied.

“White Elder,” Excellence looked at the ancient wood carving, “Do you have any advice regarding a situation involving internal betrayal and difficulty discerning the truth of information?”

White Elder's spiritual fluctuation carried a wisdom and helplessness born of long experience, as if telling a story worn down by time: “Internal enemies are hard to guard against, and truth and falsehood are unpredictable. When the foundation of trust shakes, every step is fraught with thorns. In this old man's opinion, first, hold fast to your original heart and discern your own path. Let there be ten thousand illusions, my Dao Heart shall not waver. Young friend Excellence's ‘Order,’ Mute's ‘Silence,’ Miss Stardust's ‘Logic,’ Evelyn's ‘Sequence,’ and even the ‘Balance’ realized by this old man, are all held by the original heart, making them impervious to External Demons. Trusting yourself is the beginning of trust.

“Second, observe their words, watch their actions, and verify their traces. Even commands from the Main System must be tested by results. If a command is executed but the matter fails, or if the words are beautiful but the reality is dangerous, then the command is suspicious. The system here (S-001), though a creation, is strictly logical and adheres to rules; its actions are measurable, and its traces are traceable. Currently, it appears trustworthy. However, it cannot be trusted completely; it must be verified by actual performance.

“Third, use stillness to control movement, and silence to observe noise. The enemy is hidden, and we are exposed; moving makes us easily reveal flaws. It is better to temporarily hide our brilliance, conceal ourselves deeply, and within this 'silence,' observe the 'noise' of the Chaos, and also observe how the potential 'internal enemy' acts. Wait until they reveal their hand, or wait until we accumulate enough strength and grasp the key secrets, before striking with the force of thunder.”

“Hold fast to the original heart, verify words and actions, and wait and observe.” Excellence chewed on White Elder's words, nodding heavily, a look of determination flashing in his eyes. “I understand. Thank you, Elder.”

Holding fast to the original heart meant adhering to their own path and goals—to survive, uncover the truth, and protect what needed protecting. Verifying words and actions meant maintaining rational scrutiny of all information, including S-001's commands and Mute's recovered memories, testing them against facts and logic. Waiting and observing meant not acting rashly when their strength was insufficient and information was unclear, especially avoiding sending signals that might expose themselves. Instead, they would utilize the Silent Corridor's concealment to quietly observe, accumulate strength, and wait for the right moment.

This was undoubtedly the safest strategy and the one most suited to their current predicament.

“So, for the time being,” Excellence summarized, his voice echoing on the bridge, “our operational priorities are: First, fully enhance our own strength, especially our capacity to deal with internal information contamination and external Chaos threats. Second, assist S-001 and Elder Mute in collecting and analyzing all possible clues regarding the ‘Traitor,’ the ‘key,’ and ‘Fallen Facilities,’ while ensuring safety. Third, strengthen the self-protection capabilities of the ranger and this area, entering a Deep Silent Observation State, and refraining from actively sending any information externally unless absolutely necessary. Fourth, continuously observe the ‘the gate’ and Chaos movements, looking for any abnormal signs possibly related to the ‘Loss of the Key’ or ‘Echo Distortion.’”

“Agreed.” Stardust, Evelyn, and Mute (via consciousness fluctuation) all expressed their agreement. White Elder's spirit also conveyed affirmation.

“S-001, please adjust the priority and task list of our 'Temporary Helper Work Protocol' accordingly. Also,” Excellence paused, looking at the main console, “regarding the 'Security Review' of ourselves and Elder Mute... how do you plan to conduct it?”

S-001's voice was calm and steady: “The Security Review will be divided into two parts. The first part involves a deep self-inspection of the system itself (S-001), checking core protocols, historical logs, and behavioral logic for records of tampering, backdoor implantation, or contradictory anomalies. This process will be completely transparent, and all public logs and self-inspection results will be made available to everyone. The second part involves a non-invasive basic assessment of all helpers (including Mute), mainly analyzing all behavioral records, energy characteristics, and system interaction patterns since entering the corridor, evaluating whether there are known characteristics consistent with the behavior patterns of 'Traitor' or 'Key Plunderers.' The assessment process will respect your privacy, and only the final risk assessment conclusions will be made public. During the review, your permissions will not be affected, but some highly sensitive areas and functions will be temporarily locked until the review is complete.”

Fair, transparent, and non-invasive. S-001's approach was impeccable.

“Understood, we accept the review.” Excellence stated on behalf of the group. In this situation, a review from the system was not only necessary but, to some extent, a process of mutual trust building.

“Review procedure has been added to the task queue and will be executed progressively as resources allow. Priority is secondary to Deep Defense protocol initiation and emergency threat monitoring.” S-001 confirmed.

With the arrangements settled, the turmoil caused by the Ancient Warning in everyone's hearts subsided slightly, but a deeper sense of gravity and vigilance had quietly taken root.

They had originally thought they were merely caught up in a grand narrative of fighting Chaos and guarding the frontier, perhaps even uncovering the secrets of a lost civilization along the way. But now, they realized that the “frontier” itself might have already developed terrible internal fissures. Unknown “Traitor” lurked in the shadows, having stolen the crucial “key” and distorted the communicative “echo.” And they, these few unexpected “Temporary Workers,” not only had to find a way to survive and improve themselves in this dangerous place but might also have unknowingly stepped into a darker and more complex game of betrayal and conspiracy spanning vast epochs.

The “the gate” remained silent. Chaos surged in the depths, like countless eyes flickering in the darkness.

And within the Silent Corridor, a silent investigation targeting the shadow of the “Traitor,” and a Deep Defense and hibernation concerning their own survival, quietly began.

The lights of the ranger seemed to become more subdued. Excellence walked to the viewport, gazing at the seemingly eternal silver-gray silence outside. He knew that the undercurrents hidden beneath this silence might be far more perilous and unpredictable than the Chaos surging beyond that the gate.

He could “feel” the massive “the gate” silently pulsating, as if responding to some deep-seated summons. And Mute's fragment was flickering slightly, as if responding to the the gate's pulsation.

“No matter who you are,” he silently said in his heart, his gaze firm, penetrating the cold glass of the viewport, “no matter what you intend to do. Since we have arrived, we will not allow this 'silence' to become a grave for truth and hope.”

The silent echo had been heard, and the Ancient Warning had been memorized. Now, it was time to sharpen their eyes, grip their weapons, and prepare to face the true storm that could come from any direction within this forgotten silence.

The lights on the bridge dimmed, leaving only the faint blue halo cast by the “the gate,” reflecting on everyone's solemn faces.

Meanwhile, deep within a Redundant Node used for processing discarded data streams on the lowest level of the bridge—unnoticed by anyone—a minute, negligible data fragment, previously deemed “completely corrupted” during scans, was quietly and extremely slowly altering its own entropy. It hadn't been purged or detected; it merely lay dormant, like a deeply buried seed, waiting for a specific, faint “echo” from the “key” to awaken it.

In the depths of the darkness, that pair of “eyes” seemed to blink.
