317: Chapter 318 The Battlefield of Cognition and the Unquenchable Flame

The attack of the "Conceptual Virus" receded like freezing seawater, leaving behind a ship in disarray and a chill that seeped into the very marrow of their bones. Inside the bridge of the ranger, although the lights had stabilized, the lingering aura of that invisible, malicious strike against the foundations of existence refused to dissipate for a long time. Everyone, including the AI Evelyn, felt as if they had run a mental marathon, or perhaps just awoken from a brutal surgery performed on their "self," carrying fatigue, weakness, and an indescribable, subconscious wariness toward the acts of "thinking" and "understanding" themselves.

Evelyn's spiritual projection was much more transparent than before; her core logic had consumed a massive amount of computing power to resist contamination and the forced erasure of data, and she was currently running basic maintenance and self-check programs at minimum power. Under her faintly flickering halo, the data stream became sparse and slow, as if she were breathing with difficulty. In Stardust's gray eyes, that signature waterfall-like data stream had become thin and sluggish, as if pressed down by an invisible weight, each flash of data carrying a heavy sense of stagnation. Mute's fragments were so dim they were nearly extinguished, transmitting a profound exhaustion; even conscious communication seemed difficult for him, with only a faint wave rippling gently in the bridge's air. Excellence himself felt a dull ache between his brows, a side effect of the power of Order overworking to counter the conceptual erosion, as if an invisible carving knife were etching the boundaries of his consciousness.

Only the White Elder's wood carving, though its surface luster had become much more restrained, remained the sole source of stability within the bridge, emitting a warm and constant spiritual wave. Like an ancient tree standing tall after a storm, it silently soothed everyone's wounded spirits. The faint light that had originally flowed over the carving became soft and inward-looking, yet it showed an even greater sense of weight and peace born from enduring the vicissitudes of time.

"System status?" Excellence's voice was somewhat raspy. He rubbed his brow, forcing himself to concentrate. His fingers tapped lightly on the console, attempting to dispel the chaos in his mind through this physical action.

"Logic core stable, contamination removal complete. However... all analytical data, signature codes, and even the related logical deduction paths regarding the high-dimensional information 'Resonance' disturbance from the Epsilon-3 direction have been forcibly erased and overwritten as per instructions," Evelyn reported, her voice carrying a simulated lag similar to a 'memory gap.' "We remember that such a disturbance occurred, we remember that we analyzed it, and we remember that the analysis invited an attack, but... we can no longer recall any details regarding the specific 'content' of that disturbance. Any attempt to retrieve related memories or data will trigger an isolation alarm from the logic firewall."

Forced erasure, memory breakpoints. This was the price they paid for survival. They knew where the "poison" came from, but they no longer knew exactly what the "poison" looked like. While this prevented the spread of contamination, it also caused them to lose the vast majority of intelligence regarding that "Resonance," which might have been an important clue.

"The attack method... can we reverse-engineer anything from it? Even just a few characteristics?" Excellence looked toward Stardust and the White Elder, his voice carrying a hint of urgency that was hard to detect.

Stardust struggled to concentrate, the data stream in her gray eyes gathering with difficulty as if dredging fragments from a swamp of memory. "The attack... was not an energy strike, nor information indoctrination, nor direct mental control. It was more like... a form of logical parasitism and tampering. It utilized our 'desire to analyze' and 'cognitive framework' regarding the 'Resonance' information to quietly embed itself, attempting to redefine the causal relationships and value weights of our core conceptual system from within. For instance, it might have tried to force us to associate the 'stability' attribute of 'Order' with 'stagnation' and 'imprisonment'; to equate the 'purity' of 'silence' with 'dead silence' and 'nothingness'; and to distort the 'authority' of the 'key' into a 'burden' or 'curse.' Had it succeeded, we might have even 'voluntarily' abandoned our power, negated ourselves, or... viewed our companions as anomalies needing to be 'purified.'"

As she finished, her voice trembled slightly, and her fingertips unconsciously gripped the edge of the console, her knuckles turning white. This deduction was too terrifying; it meant they might not even be able to trust their own thoughts.

"The ingenuity of its methods and the malice of its intent far exceed ordinary heart-demon spells," the White Elder added, his voice carrying a rare gravity. "This was no momentary confusion, but an attempt to fundamentally shake your foundations, such that even if you possessed powerful tools, you would not know how to use them, or might even perceive them as harmful. Fortunately, you reacted swiftly and used 'forgetting' to sever its roots, allowing this old man to disperse its remnants. However, for this creature to launch such an attack, it must have an extremely deep understanding of high-dimensional information, the human mind, and even the 'Paths' you hold (Order, silence), and its ambitions are no small matter."

"Is it the Scavenger?" Evelyn asked, her voice tinged with hesitation. "Or that voiceless reaper?"

"Both are possible, but the styles are slightly different." Excellence pondered, recalling the feeling of the attack, his fingertips unconsciously tapping the armrest. "The Scavenger's (wave source) attacks are direct, forceful, and carry a cold, ordered will for destruction, much like its Order Definition Beam. This 'Conceptual Virus,' however, is more hidden and insidious, focusing on corrosion and distortion. As for that reaper... its methods are completely beyond our understanding, but it feels more... 'transcendent,' like a precise 'operation' rather than a 'contamination' filled with intense malice. This time, the sense of malice was very obvious."

"Perhaps there are different branches or methods within the Scavenger?" Stardust speculated, her voice carrying a hint of a chill. "One part is responsible for frontal luring and assault (wave source), while another specifically handles this kind of hidden cognitive contamination and information warfare. That 'Conceptual Virus' might be another one of their weapons. It uses the 'Resonance' mechanism that 'survivor' groups like Epsilon-3 might use as bait and a channel to ambush any existence that attempts to analyze or contact such 'Resonance.'"

This speculation was bone-chilling. It meant that not only was responding to forged instructions a trap, but even attempting to investigate and contact those "survivors" who sent warnings could lead into another even more hidden and lethal trap! The enemy's net was cast wider and tighter than they had imagined.

"Do we... still need to continue trying to contact Epsilon-3?" Evelyn's voice carried a hint of hesitation, as if even asking the question made her feel uneasy.

"For now... we cannot," Excellence shook his head, his expression grave, a flash of resolve in his eyes. "At least not in the way we did before. The enemy has already targeted this line and may have even deliberately left 'bait.' If we touch it again, it's equivalent to walking into a trap."

"Then our exploration plan..." Stardust looked toward the possible direction of Epsilon-3 on the star map, her fingers unconsciously tracing the void, trying to find a glimmer of hope within that data.

"The plan needs adjustment." Excellence's gaze also turned toward that dark region of space, his eyes becoming more determined, as if lighting a faint lamp in the darkness. "It's not about giving up on exploration, but changing the method and focus of it. Since direct contact and signal probing are too risky, we will conduct observations from a greater distance and in a more indirect manner. We will not actively analyze any 'regular signals' that might contain traps, nor will we establish any deep information connections. We will only observe the most basic 'hard' data, such as physical phenomena, energy flows, and spatial structures. We search for anomalies, but we do not easily attribute causes."

"Like a scout outside a minefield, observing only through binoculars." Stardust understood Excellence's meaning, the data stream in her gray eyes beginning to flash rhythmically as if simulating a scout's mindset. "Looking only at terrain, vegetation, and changes in light and shadow, without touching any potential mines or bait. Although the amount of information gathered will be much less, it is safer."

"Furthermore," Excellence added, a sharp light flashing in his eyes as if he had seen a glimmer in the darkness, "this attack, though dangerous, has also given us a reverse clue. The attack was launched through our analysis of the 'Resonance,' which proves that in the region toward Epsilon-3, there indeed exists some activity or mechanism capable of triggering high-dimensional information 'Resonance.' Moreover, this activity or mechanism is closely related to the Scavenger's cognitive contamination traps. This in itself is an extremely important 'environmental characteristic.' We don't need to know the specific content of the 'Resonance'; we only need to confirm its existence and the dangerous areas it might be associated with. This will help us outline a 'danger map' of that region."

"Avoid the solid and strike the weak; observe the momentum without falling into the snare," the White Elder praised, his voice steady as an ancient bell. "Good. Since we know there is an ambush, we should no longer respond with conventional methods. By observing movement through stillness and observing noise through silence, we may yet catch a glimpse of the truth."

The plan was readjusted. The core objective of the exploration shifted from "finding and contacting Epsilon-3" to "mapping high-dimensional information activity and potential threat distribution in the Epsilon-3 direction." The observation method switched to purely passive, non-intrusive scanning of physical and basic energy levels, avoiding any form of high-dimensional information analysis or deep logical deduction.

The ranger once again entered a long state of navigation and stealth. This time, the destination was the peripheral area of Epsilon-3's possible direction, a void Node expected to be relatively "clean" and capable of wide-area scanning. The voyage was extremely slow and cautious; for every distance advanced, they performed long-duration, omnidirectional silent lurking and background noise sampling to ensure they hadn't attracted any attention.

During this period, everyone was also taking time to recover. Excellence and Mute, with the assistance of S-001 and the White Elder, attempted to repair the subtle damage to their respective power foundations caused by the "Conceptual Virus" attack and reinforced their core conceptual defenses related to Order and silence. Excellence's brow still ached slightly, but through meditation, he gradually rewove the power of Order into a tougher barrier, no longer relying solely on "definition" but integrating a subtle balance of "guarding" and "understanding." Although Mute's fragments were dim, he gradually restored the stability of his consciousness by repeatedly recalling the most core and steadfast memory Nodes regarding "guarding" and "duty."

Stardust and Evelyn collaborated to develop a more robust and "foolproof" observation and data analysis protocol. This protocol would actively filter out any suspicious signals with complex logical structures or high-dimensional information characteristics, retaining only the most basic, repeatable physical readings to eliminate the possibility of being exploited by the "Conceptual Virus" at the source. After her core logic was repaired, Evelyn became more "dull" and "conservative," which ironically became an advantage—she was no longer eager to analyze everything, focusing instead on the raw presentation of data.

Time passed, and in this slow, cautious voyage filled with repair and preparation, another hundred-plus standard hours went by.

Just as the ranger finally arrived at the designated observation Node and was preparing to begin the wide-area scan, S-001, which had been monitoring the rear (the direction of the hidden coordinates), suddenly transmitted an unexpected message.

"Detected a non-aggressive, high-energy-level spatial structure change in the direction of the hidden coordinates. Change characteristics: Suspected to be the 'preparation phase' energy accumulation and spatial anchoring for a large-scale structure's hyperspace jump. Energy characteristics: Highly homologous with the energy source previously detected inside the coordinates, suspected to be the 'Green Light' reaction. Target: Predicted direction of Epsilon-3. Estimated jump initiation time: Unknown, but the energy accumulation rate indicates that preparations have entered the final stage."

The "thing" inside the coordinates was about to jump? And it was heading toward Epsilon-3?!

This news, like a giant boulder thrown into a calm lake, instantly sent everyone's recently settled emotions into a turmoil again.

"That coordinate point... as expected, it's not dead!" Mute's conscious wave came through, carrying a hint of excitement and wariness that was hard to hide. "The 'thing' inside has been active all along! Now, it's 'leaving,' heading toward Epsilon-3! Is it going to rendezvous? Or is it going to execute some mission?"

[part:gemini-2.5-flash]

"What's the wave source unit's reaction?" Excellence immediately asked, a hint of undetectable tension in his voice.

"The wave source miniature assault unit, approximately 0.5 seconds after it began energy accumulation at the coordinate point, its stealth field showed violent fluctuations. Subsequently... it actively disengaged stealth and began sending a high-priority, strongly encrypted emergency status report at maximum power towards the wave source (pseudo-coordinate) direction!" S-001 reported quickly. "The report content cannot be parsed, but the signal strength is extremely high, clearly attempting to transmit intelligence before the 'thing' within the coordinate point jumps away."

The entity within the coordinate point was trying to escape, and the wave source's observer was anxious to tip them off!

"Can we intercept or jam its report?" Stardust asked, her fingers rapidly tapping on the control panel, pulling up real-time data for the wave source unit.

"The distance is too great, and the opponent's signal power is extremely high and highly directional. Conventional jamming is ineffective. Forcibly intercepting or attacking would immediately expose our position," S-001 replied.

"Let it report." Excellence, however, made an unexpected decision, a calm light flickering in his eyes as if he saw an opportunity in the darkness. "Let it send the message back. We can then observe how the wave source (Scavenger) reacts when it learns that something at this coordinate point is trying to escape, and is doing so towards Epsilon-3, a direction they are also concerned about. Will they send people to intercept? Or will they strengthen surveillance? This can help us determine the Scavenger's level of concern for this coordinate point and the Epsilon-3 direction, and may even reveal their force deployment and reaction patterns."

"Sitting on the mountain to watch the tigers fight, and the fisherman benefits?" Evelyn understood Excellence's strategy, a hint of undetectable admiration in her voice.

"It's observation, record-keeping," Excellence corrected, his voice steady. "We are far from 'benefiting.' But any action from either side will leave traces and information. What we lack most right now is information."

Indeed, shortly after the wave source assault unit sent its emergency report, the energy accumulation in the direction of the coordinate point reached its peak, and the spatial structure twisted to its extreme. Then, accompanied by a strong spatial ripple that was clearly perceptible even from a great distance, a deep green energy beam, not dazzling but exceptionally solid and possessing a steady, profound feel, shot out from the core area of the coordinate point, 'tearing open' a relatively stable, though not particularly massive, hyperspace jump channel in the void!

Immediately after, a blurry, difficult-to-discern small vehicle (or unit), seemingly with an irregular polyhedral structure and deep gray in color, flashed out of the channel, instantly vanished into it, and disappeared. The channel then rapidly collapsed and closed.

The entire process was swift and clean, from energy accumulation to jump completion, taking only a few seconds. Clearly, the entity within the coordinate point had prepared for this jump for a long time, and the technology was very mature.

"Jump complete. Target bearing confirmed: highly consistent with the inferred Epsilon-3 direction. Jump unit energy signature recorded. After the jump, the coordinate point's force field energy level plummeted, returning to a state of deep silence, but its core area still seems to retain a faint, continuous 'Green Light' energy reaction, suspected to be some kind of automated maintenance system or beacon," S-001 reported.

It's gone. The entity that might have preserved some 'relic information' of the wanderer, possibly a 'validation station' or 'outpost,' has jumped away, heading towards Epsilon-3. Is it to report? To rejoin its unit? Or to carry out an urgent mission?

"What about the wave source unit?" Excellence asked, his gaze sharp.

"After confirming the coordinate point jump was complete, its emergency report was also finished. Subsequently, the unit re-entered deep stealth, but the stability of its stealth field significantly decreased, and its energy signature showed unstable fluctuations, suspected to be damaged after prolonged 潛伏 and high-intensity reporting. Currently, it remains near the coordinate point, has not left, and has not shown any further reaction to the jump event," S-001 replied.

The wave source (Scavenger) received the message but did not immediately take interceptive action. Was it too late? Did they believe the target was beyond interception? Or... were they waiting for further instructions, or was this already within their expectations or plans?

The situation became even more perplexing.

"Record all of this," Excellence said gravely, his voice carrying a decisive calm. "The coordinate point's jump, the wave source's reaction, the jump unit's direction and characteristics... these are all pieces of the puzzle. Now, as per our original plan, we will begin a wide-area scan in the Epsilon-3 direction. Note, focus on scanning basic data such as abnormal spatial structure stability, residual energy signatures, and high-dimensional information background noise levels. Pay particular attention to whether there are residual spatial ripples or navigation trails consistent with the energy signature of the jump unit we just observed."

The ranger's observation array quietly activated, beginning a meticulous and lengthy scan of the vast, dark, unknown void in the Epsilon-3 direction, operating at minimum power and in the most concealed mode.

The scanning was tedious, and the data was massive and fragmented. On the screen, most areas displayed the nearly perfect, sleep-inducing dead silence baseline of silence. Occasionally, some faint chaotic background fluctuations or distant, irregular Heart-Devouring Demon activity signals would appear, but they were quickly filtered out.

It wasn't until the seventh day (standard time) of the scan, approximately fifteen hundred standard light-years from their current observation Node (deep in the Epsilon-3 direction), in an area where the silence baseline information density was slightly below average, that Evelyn's data filtering algorithm suddenly captured a set of extremely faint, yet persistent and non-naturally occurring anomalous readings.

"Anomalous region detected. Coordinates: marked as Sector-Gamma-9," Evelyn's voice carried the alertness of someone who had found prey. She pulled up the detailed data, a hint of undetectable excitement in her voice. "The quantum fluctuations of the silence baseline in this region show regular low-frequency suppression. The suppression frequency and amplitude have a statistically significant similarity, less than 1% but still significant, to the model of the 'environmental stabilization field's' suppression effect on external background noise when a Silent Corridor unit is stationed long-term. At the same time, an extremely faint, non-naturally formed, long-term 'depression' in spatial curvature is detected in this region, suspected to be caused by a massive/high-energy object having undergone hyperspace jump operations here for a long period or multiple times."

Regular background noise suppression? Spatial 'depressions' left by long-term jumps?

"Amplify this area! Conduct a higher-precision scan! But be careful, only scan basic physical parameters!" Excellence immediately ordered, his voice focused, like someone who had found a clue.

The higher-precision scan results showed that the area called Sector-Gamma-9, on the background 'canvas' of silence, was like an extremely blurred, dim, irregular 'shadow.' The quantum fluctuation level in its central region was about 0.0001% lower than the surrounding areas. This difference was so tiny it was almost negligible, yet in an environment of absolute silence, it appeared exceptionally prominent. And that spatial 'depression' was like an invisible giant object that had pressed down on the 'membrane' of spacetime for a long time, an almost smoothed-out 'shallow pit' that nevertheless left a trace.

"Something... existed here for a long time," Stardust murmured, staring at the data, her voice carrying the excitement of discovery, yet also a hint of caution. "Or, things frequently performed high-energy spatial jumps here. That regular suppression of background noise doesn't seem naturally formed. And this spatial 'depression'... it's not small, and it seems to have existed for a long time, but it hasn't been completely 'smoothed over' by the silence baseline. This could very well be... a discarded, or periodically used, 'jump rendezvous point,' 'relay station,' or even... the peripheral traces of a hidden 'base'!"

"Could it be one of Epsilon-3's strongholds? Or... the Scavenger's?" Evelyn asked, a hint of uncertainty in her voice.

"Cannot be determined. But its location is in the inferred direction of Epsilon-3, and there seems to be some kind of extended linear connection with the direction of the coordinate point jump unit we just observed," Excellence analyzed, his finger gently tracing the star map as if outlining an invisible line. "More importantly, the 'traces' it left are physical, fundamental, not involving high-dimensional information or complex logic, making them less susceptible to cognitive traps. This is much safer than directly touching those 'Resonance' signals that might be 'poisonous'."

"You want to go there and see?" Mute's consciousness fluctuations came through, carrying a hint of anticipation.

"No, not yet," Excellence shook his head, a thoughtful glint in his eyes. "There might still be unknown surveillance there, or it could simply be a trap. But we can use this 'trace' area as a center to expand our scanning range, looking for more similar, less obvious 'anomaly points.' Perhaps, through these 'physical traces,' we can outline the hidden activity 'network' and 'Nodes' in the Epsilon-3 direction. This is like observing the footprints, resting places, and gnawing marks left by wild beasts in a forest to determine their range of activity and habits, without having to confront the beasts themselves."

This was a grander, longer, but potentially safer and more systematic investigation plan.

The ranger, like the most patient cosmic archaeologist, began to conduct a more detailed and systematic 'traceology' scan of the vast void in the Epsilon-3 direction, starting from Sector-Gamma-9. They were no longer looking for 'signals,' but for the most subtle, most fundamental physical imprints left when silence itself was 'disturbed.'

This work progressed slowly, but every day, new, tiny 'anomaly points' were added to the star map. Some were suspicious energy residues, some were inexplicable micro-distortions in spatial structure, some were unnatural distributions of matter density... Taken in isolation, these points might all be natural phenomena or measurement errors, but when they were marked on the star map and correlated with obvious 'trace' areas like Sector-Gamma-9, some blurry, intermittent outlines, like a 'path' or 'network,' began to vaguely emerge.

They seemed to point deeper into the Epsilon-3 direction, towards that unknown realm, spied upon by the Scavenger, contaminated by cognitive viruses, and possibly inhabited by 'survivors,' a place full of secrets and dangers.

The crew of the ranger were attempting, in an unprecedented and extremely indirect way, to 'listen' to the silent 'footsteps' and 'heartbeats' that had long dissipated but still echoed in the spacetime baseline, deep within this silent battlefield.

They knew that the path ahead was still shrouded in mist and fraught with danger. But at least, they had found a new way, their own way, to continue advancing and observing in this cruel chess game where cognition and existence were both considered battlefields.

The spark might be faint, but the eyes peering into the darkness had opened. The search for answers, though slow, had not ceased.

Inside the bridge, time flowed in silence. Evelyn's ethereal projection flickered slightly on the screen, as if deep in thought; Stardust's data streams flowed slowly, as if deciphering those silent 'footprints'; Mute's fragmented light, though dim, was slowly recovering; and Excellence gazed out at the eternal darkness beyond the viewport, his eyes holding both vigilance and a hint of undetectable hope.

They knew this silent war had just begun.
