304: Chapter 305 Ripples and Mist
" 'It' is moving..."
Excellence's words were like pebbles thrown into a deep pool, stirring circles of tense ripples in everyone's hearts. Outside the porthole, that eternal, silent silver-gray now seemed to carry an indescribable, invisible weight in their Perception. The faint sign of 'fluctuation emission' pointing behind the 'the gate' toward a certain spot in the deep information sea, though still as blurry as distant mountains in the mist, was no longer a mere guess but an observed, objective, and persistent 'anomaly'.
In the following days, the 'temporary workers' of the ranger entered an unprecedented state of highly focused work. Stardust devoted almost all her energy to the continuous monitoring and data analysis of that anomalous fluctuation sign. Collaborating with S-001, she constantly adjusted and optimized the configuration of those deep passive sensing arrays, attempting to extract more details about the 'fluctuation' from the vast sea of raw data contaminated by the 'silent' environment and chaotic noise.
This task was exceptionally difficult, like trying to distinguish the wingbeats of a mosquito a thousand kilometers away in a recording of a violent storm, and then determining if the mosquito was male or female and which way it was flying. But Stardust's patience and logical capacity reached their peak at this moment. She designed dozens of different signal filtering and feature extraction algorithms, 'bombarding' the massive data in turns, trying to catch any trace of a pattern.
Progress was slow, but it wasn't entirely without gain.
"The fluctuation shows an extremely weak periodicity, with a cycle of approximately three hundred to five hundred standard hours, but it's unstable and often interrupted by clutter," Stardust said, pointing to a faint curve on the light screen that remained unsteady despite layers of processing, her fingertips turning slightly white from pressure. "Its 'spectral fingerprint' does not match any known chaotic energy fluctuation, Heart-Devouring Demon activity, or regular pulse of the 'silent' network. It seems... to be a composite signal, with an extremely weak but unusually stable 'base frequency' at the bottom, overlaid with various messy, irregular 'harmonics' and 'noise' on top."
"A composite signal? Stable base frequency?" Excellence pondered, his eyes fixed on the faint curve. "A stable base frequency usually implies a regular 'source' or 'mechanism'. Messy upper harmonics and noise... could be interference during transmission, or the source itself isn't 'pure', or... signals from multiple different sources are mixed together?"
"All are possible." Stardust nodded, her gray eyes flashing with focused light. "More importantly, through continuous observation, we can basically confirm that this 'fluctuation emission' phenomenon is persistent, not an occasional event. Although its intensity is so weak it's almost negligible, it's like a low-power, never-stopping... 'beacon' or 'radiation source' hidden in the darkness."
A never-stopping beacon or radiation source. This description reminded Excellence of the 'beacon' characteristic S-001 mentioned that the ancient warning might carry. Was there a connection between the two?
"S-001, is there any progress on the probability calculation for the source direction of that ancient signal fragment?" Excellence asked, a trace of undetectable anticipation in his voice.
"The first round of preliminary screening for the large-scale probability calculation is complete," S-001 replied, its voice steady and calm. "Based on existing models and data, three potential source direction cones with relatively high probabilities have been derived. Among them, the direction cone ranked second in probability has an approximately 35% spatial overlap probability with the general area pointed to by the anomalous 'fluctuation emission' monitored by Stardust."
35%! This number was already startlingly high given the current extreme lack of information! While it didn't directly prove the two were the same thing, it at least indicated that the facility that sent the ancient warning—which might have already 'fallen'—and the source currently emitting the persistent anomalous fluctuation were located in roughly the same, extremely distant orientation in the universe!
"What about the first and third most likely direction cones?" Stardust followed up, her fingertips quickly swiping across the light screen.
"The first direction cone points toward the other side of the 'the gate', deeper into the Sea of Chaos, an area currently impossible to describe effectively with any model. The overlap probability cannot be estimated, but the calculation model's confidence assessment for this direction is low. The third direction cone points inside the 'Order Domain', toward a theoretical 'empty' void region unrelated to any known star map coordinates, with an overlap probability of about 8%," S-001 explained.
In other words, looking at it comprehensively, the possibility that the source of the anomalous fluctuation emission was the location of the ancient warning's sender (the fallen facility) was actually the highest currently?
"If it really is the same place..." Mute's voice sounded. His consciousness seemed much more stable after this period of sorting and resting, and the light of his fragments appeared restrained and deep. "That means that place... after sending the final warning and completely 'falling'... might still be 'active' even now? Or, at least its 'remains' or 'some mechanism left behind' are still operating, emitting this faint fluctuation?"
A facility that had fallen for perhaps tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of years, yet its remains were still emitting regular fluctuations? It sounded somewhat incredible. But considering the sense of time and form of existence in a place like the Silent Corridor, it wasn't entirely impossible. Perhaps the residual 'silent' force field, the broken energy network, or some automated protocol that hadn't fully stopped there was still running at extremely low power, like a stuck gear on a massive machine still slightly vibrating.
But in Excellence's heart, there was a faint, more uneasy premonition. If it were just the unconscious vibration of remains, why would its fluctuation be 'composite' and carry a stable 'base frequency'? Why would it correlate with the ancient warning they had caught by chance, which possessed 'beacon' properties? And why was it being monitored by them at this particular time?
Too many coincidences made it seem less like a coincidence.
"S-001, is it possible that this fluctuation... is a communication attempt? Or some kind of status broadcast?" Excellence proposed a bolder hypothesis, his voice low and solemn. "Despite the signal being extremely weak and heavily encrypted or distorted, does its persistence and stable base frequency mean it might be trying to transmit some information to the outside? For example... 'I am still here', 'status anomaly', 'need rescue'... or, more dangerously—'bait', 'trap', 'coordinates'?"
"That possibility cannot be ruled out," S-001 responded cautiously. "From an information theory perspective, any regular, non-random signal could carry information. However, its information density, encryption method, and intent are completely unresolvable at the current observation level. If it is active communication or broadcasting, its transmission power is so low and the signal so obscure that it far exceeds conventional communication needs, making it closer to... a 'covert beacon' or a 'deep lurking signal'."
Covert beacon, deep lurking signal... these terms seemed to have a subtle resonance with the 'silent lurking' command.
Just then, Evelyn's voice cut in: "Commander, Stardust, I have an additional discovery regarding the 'composite' nature of that fluctuation."
She projected a processed data spectrum onto the main screen. "After separating that stable 'base frequency' and the large amount of messy 'harmonic noise', I tried to perform a separate analysis on the remaining 'secondary harmonic' components, which are slightly higher in intensity. I found a group of extremely faint 'pulse clusters' that seem to follow a simple repeating pattern."
As the spectrum zoomed in, one could barely see that amidst the messy background, every so often, a small cluster of 'bumps'—composed of several closely connected tiny pulses with an intensity slightly higher than the surrounding noise—would repeat very regularly. Its repetition period was highly close to the average value of the unstable cycle (300-500 standard hours) mentioned by Stardust.
"The morphology of this 'pulse cluster' has an approximately 5% morphological similarity to a very ancient protocol signal variant in the S-001 database used to identify a 'system low-power standby - periodic self-check' status," Evelyn said slowly, a trace of undetectable excitement in her voice.
System low-power standby... periodic self-check... the group fell into silence again.
If this 'pulse cluster' really related to some 'standby self-check' signal, it was almost certain that the distant fluctuation source was not mere 'remains' or a 'natural phenomenon', but a system or facility still operating to some extent with intelligence or preset programs!
A facility that might have been 'fallen' for long ages, and its system was actually still executing 'periodic self-checks'?
What did this mean?
Did it mean its core might not be completely damaged? Did it mean 'falling' might not be total physical destruction, but some form of 'loss of contact', 'occupation', or 'functional anomaly'? Did it mean that 'traitor' or the entity that took the 'key' might still be active there, maintaining some minimum level of system operation? Or even... deliberately maintaining this operation to achieve some purpose?
"'key stolen', 'echo distortion'..." Stardust whispered, repeating the words from the ancient warning, her eyes flashing. "If the 'key' is truly deeply bound to the control system, then the entity that took the 'key' likely obtained partial or even full control of the facility. Does it maintain the facility's minimum 'standby' and 'self-check' to keep basic functions from shutting down completely for future use? Or is this 'self-check' signal itself a means it uses to monitor the facility's status, or... to send some covert information outward?"
"Or perhaps," White Elder's aged voice carried the vicissitudes of one who had seen through the world, as if telling a story eroded by time, "it is not a self-check, but a struggle. Like a bound beast, though unable to break free, it still scratches the ground with its claws, twitching periodically to show it is not dead, or... to seek help?"
Struggling? Seeking help?
This possibility stirred something in Excellence's heart. If that facility truly hadn't completely fallen and there were still residual forces inside resisting and trying to send signals... were the ancient warning they received and the faint fluctuation they were now monitoring—with its suspected 'standby self-check' characteristics—manifestations of this 'struggle' and 'plea for help'?
But the warning 'do not trust' hung high above. Was this distress signal true or false? Was it a trap, or hope?
"We need more information to verify these guesses," Excellence said solemnly, feeling his thoughts being led into a more complex and dangerous maze. "S-001, can we attempt to use the energy network characteristics of the Silent Corridor itself to perform an... ultra-long-distance, ultra-low-power, non-intrusive 'Gravitational Lens' or 'Spacetime Curvature Probe' observation in that direction, without actively sending any signals or exposing ourselves?"
He proposed a technique that was theoretically feasible but extremely difficult to execute, requiring insanely high precision and control. Simply put, it involved using the relatively stable 'base' and energy network of the special space of the Silent Corridor to create an extremely tiny, brief local spacetime distortion—like throwing an incredibly small pebble into water—and indirectly inferring whether a massive object (or high-energy source, anomalous spacetime structure, etc.) existed in that direction by observing the almost imperceptible deflection or flickering of starlight (referring to information flow here) from a distant point (the target direction) as it passed through this tiny distortion.
This method would not emit an active signal, and the observation target was not 'seen' directly; rather, it detected 'indirect effects' of its existence. It was highly covert, but the amount of information obtained would be minimal, and the success rate was slim.
S-001 was silent for a moment, clearly performing a complex feasibility assessment. "The plan is feasible, but there are multiple constraints. First, the Silent Corridor energy network is currently in a low-power maintenance state. Forcibly calling upon some nodes to create controllable spacetime micro-perturbations could trigger local network instability, requiring precise calculations and energy compensation. Second, the target distance is unknown, and signal attenuation is difficult to estimate. Even if the micro-perturbation is successfully created, the resulting deflection effect on the information flow from the target direction will be so weak it will approach the quantum fluctuation level; the detection success rate is estimated to be below 0.001%. Finally, while this operation itself does not actively transmit a signal, mobilizing network energy could produce extremely faint 'ripples' localized within the corridor. If a highly sensitive 'listener' is in close proximity, there is still a slight risk of being detected."
A 0.001% success rate and a slight risk. This was almost like looking for a needle in a haystack, and the needle might even prick your hand.
But Excellence's gaze was exceptionally firm. "Do it. Even if there's only a one-in-a-billion chance, we have to try. We need to know what's behind there—is it a dead remain, a dangerous trap, or a... possible opportunity? As for the risk, keep the energy fluctuations to a minimum, compress the operation time to the shortest possible, and be ready to interrupt and annihilate all traces at any time."
"Command confirmed. Beginning ultra-precise simulation calculations and energy node scheduling planning. Estimated preparation time: seventy-two standard hours. Operation execution window: no more than zero point zero zero one seconds. Please maintain a state of minimum activity during this period to reduce any unnecessary energy disturbances." S-001 accepted the command and began operating at high speed.
Seventy-two hours; they needed to wait. During this time, everyone adjusted their states to minimum power consumption. Aside from necessary life support and core system monitoring, all training, research, and even the lights inside the ship were further dimmed. The ranger seemed to completely merge into the 'silent' background, turning into a true, lifeless 'metallic reef'.
Excellence spent most of his time meditating, consolidating his control over the power of Order—especially that restrained, quiet state that simulated 'silence'—while repeatedly deducing various possibilities in his mind. Stardust and Evelyn continued to dig deep into the existing fluctuation data under minimum power. Mute, with S-001's assistance, continued to slowly and safely sort through his memory fragments, looking for any clues that might be related to 'fluctuations', 'falling', or 'traitors'.
White Elder's spirit was like the deepest ancient well, enveloping the area, using his beyond-normal Perception to stay alert for any trace of unusual 'noise'.
Time flowed second by second in this deliberately suppressed silence.
Just before the scheduled operation time, a new and unexpected development suddenly came from Mute's side.
"I... seem to remember something." Mute's voice carried a trace of confusion, the light of his fragments fluctuating slightly. "It's not about the 'traitor' or the 'key'... it's about... about the construction purpose of our Silent Corridor units, or rather, an... emphasized 'underlying logic'."
"Underlying logic?" Excellence's spirits lifted, his voice carrying a hint of urgency.
"Yes," Mute said slowly, as if struggling to organize the vague concepts that had just surfaced. "The 'Silent Corridor'... is more than just a 'buffer zone' and a 'seal.' It is more like an... observation station, a filter, and also an... incubator? My memories are very fragmented, but I recall a strong realization: our existence is for the purpose of observing the evolution of 'Chaos,' screening the 'seeds' of 'Order,' and guiding their growth under absolute control. The 'the gate' is not just for isolation, but also for... controllable exchange. It draws the nourishment of 'possibilities' from Chaos, purifies them through 'Silence' and nurtures them in the 'Corridor,' transforming them into stable, orderly 'Rule Fragments' or 'Existential Ground States,' then injects them into the 'Order Domain' to promote its evolution and development."
This explanation was similar to the "regulating balance" and "import processing" mentioned in previous data, but it went deeper, pointing out the active and constructive side of the "Corridor."
"But at the same time," Mute's tone grew serious, "the memory also emphasizes that this process must be absolutely controllable and absolutely safe. Any component of Chaos that has not been fully 'purified' and 'tamed,' any factor that could trigger an 'echo' distortion or 'Order' contamination, must be strictly isolated and cleared. To this end, the system has set extremely rigorous internal monitoring and self-censorship mechanisms. Every Watcher is, in themselves, an object of monitoring. Our consciousness, our decisions, and every deep interaction we have with the 'key' and the 'Corridor' are recorded, analyzed, and evaluated... to prevent... 'Deviation.'"
Internal monitoring, self-censorship, preventing deviation... these words reminded Excellence of the "security review" S-001 was undergoing, as well as the warning "Do Not Trust."
"So, 'traitor' might refer to a Watcher who has undergone 'Deviation'? Or some other high-level authority within the system?" Stardust asked, a sharp glint flashing in her gray eyes.
"Very likely," Mute confirmed. "I don't know the specific criteria for 'Deviation,' but it feels very strict. Any undue interest in 'Chaos,' any attempt to bypass security protocols to use the 'key,' any unauthorized attempt to deeply 'resonate' with the 'Main System' or other units... could be flagged as a risk of 'Deviation.' And once 'Deviation' is confirmed... the consequences seem severe. I seem to have... a vague impression of some kind of 'Purification Program' or 'Forced Hibernation'... a very bad feeling."
Purification Program, Forced Hibernation... could this explain Mute's own "standby" state? But was he processed because of "Deviation," or for some other reason?
"You mentioned 'incubator' and 'guiding growth,'" Excellence seized another key point. "How exactly is that operated? What role does the 'echo' play in it?"
"That... is even more blurred," Mute struggled to recall. "The 'echo'... seems to be a verification mechanism and also a guiding tool. When a seed of Order absorbs Chaos nourishment in the 'Silence' environment of the Corridor and grows to a certain extent, it produces a specific 'resonance.' If this 'resonance' matches a preset 'Purity Template,' it will be recognized by the system, triggering a 'True echo.' This 'echo' is both a certification of its 'qualification' and a help for it to better integrate with the basic rules of the 'Order Domain' to complete its 'incubation.' But if the 'resonance' is impure or contaminated, the 'echo' will 'distort,' and that seed will be regarded as a 'reject' or 'hazard' and be... 'reclaimed' or 'destroyed.'"
Verification mechanism, guiding tool, qualification certification, reclamation and destruction... Excellence felt he was approaching a core truth. "Then, what role does the 'key' play in the 'incubation' process?"
"The 'key'... is authority, and also a 'Catalyst.'" Mute's tone carried an instinctive awe. "A key holder with the corresponding authority can actively adjust the parameters of the 'Silence' environment, guide the flow of Chaos nourishment, and even... to a certain extent, 'shape' or 'influence' the 'resonance' characteristics of that seed, thereby affecting the final 'echo' it triggers. Theoretically, this is to optimize the 'incubation' process and cultivate Order products that better meet requirements. But obviously, this also means huge risks. If the 'key' is abused, or if the holder 'deviates'... they could deliberately cultivate 'twisted' seeds, trigger 'dangerous' 'Echoes,' or even... use the 'Echoes' for other things."
"For example, attracting the listeners?" Stardust added coldly.
"...That possibility cannot be ruled out," Mute admitted after a moment of silence.
The information was linking up again. The purpose of building the "Corridor," the strict internal monitoring, the authority and risks of the "key," the verification and guiding role of the "echo," and the potential harm of a "twisted echo"... a more complete and more solemn picture of the Silent Corridor network's operating mechanism gradually emerged before everyone's eyes. This was by no means just a gatekeeping "property management company," but a highly sophisticated, strictly authorized, and simultaneously high-risk "cosmic-level bio/rule laboratory" and "border quarantine station."
And "traitor" and "stolen key" meant that the most dangerous authorities and tools in this laboratory had fallen into the hands of someone with potentially ill intentions. They could use these to create monsters in the "incubator," send dangerous signals using "twisted Echoes," or even... destroy the filtering function of the "the gate," introducing "Chaos" directly into the "Order Domain."
"That fluctuation we monitored..." Excellence said slowly, a terrifying hypothesis forming in his mind, "could it be... a 'side effect' of an illegal or 'deviant' 'incubation' experiment continuously carried out by a 'traitor' after controlling a 'fallen' 'incubator'? Or, is it a continuous 'aftershock' of some kind of 'twisted echo' deliberately triggered by that 'traitor' using the stolen 'key'?"
This hypothesis made the temperature inside the bridge seem to drop several degrees.
If this was true, then what they had monitored was not a silent ruin, nor a desperate distress signal, but the extremely faint "noise" leaking across vast time and space from an ongoing, unknown, and potentially extremely dangerous "experiment" or "ritual"!
"The seventy-two-hour preparation time is about to end." S-001's voice broke the heavy silence. "The Gravitational Lens observation operation has entered the final countdown. Ten, nine, eight... all personnel, please enter a state of silence, secure yourselves, and prepare to endure possible faint tremors in the spatial structure. Three, two, one... operation executing."
There was no sound, no light.
But the moment S-001's voice fell, Excellence, Stardust, and everyone else on the ship had an extremely strange, indescribable illusion, as if their entire existence had been extremely gently and briefly "twisted" and then quickly restored. The feeling was fleeting, so fast it made one doubt if it was a hallucination.
At the same time, the most precise space-time curvature monitoring array, deployed around the ranger and near the heart of silence, recorded a segment of complex space-time ripple data that lasted only 0.000001 seconds and had an amplitude so low it needed to be magnified billions of times to be seen.
The operation was over.
"Operation complete. Energy fluctuations controlled within the expected range, no obvious signs of leakage found. Space-time perturbations have subsided. Beginning reception and analysis of probe data..." S-001 reported.
The next few minutes felt as long as centuries. Everyone held their breath, waiting to see if that one-in-a-billion possibility would bring a glimmer of light.
"...Data reception complete. Beginning large-scale noise filtering and signal extraction... comparing with preset models... anomaly detected."
S-001's voice remained steady, but the word "anomaly" made everyone's heart leap.
"In the target direction, within the preset observation 'window,' an extremely faint but statistically significant non-background space-time curvature anomaly signal has been detected. The signal characteristics indicate that at a great distance in the target direction, there exist one or more gravitational sources or high-energy density regions, whose presence caused detectable, non-random deflections when the distant information flow passed through that region."
Success?! They had really indirectly "seen" that there was something in that direction?!
"Can we analyze further? Scale? Quantity? State of motion?" Excellence asked urgently.
"The signal is too faint for precise mass or energy estimation. Preliminary inference suggests its overall scale should be quite massive to produce an effect that we could capture in such an indirect manner at this distance. The quantity cannot be determined; it could be a single giant structure or a collection of several smaller structures. Regarding the state of motion... data shows its gravitational field/energy field has extremely faint, periodic perturbations. The perturbation period... after preliminary calculation, has a high correlation with the 'fundamental frequency' period of the anomaly fluctuation monitored by Stardust."
Massive scale. Periodic perturbations. Perturbation period correlated with the fundamental frequency of the anomaly fluctuation!
All the clues, at this moment, seemed to suddenly tighten, pointing toward a clear and heart-stopping conclusion—
In that distant direction, toward the deep information sea behind the flank of the "the gate," there indeed existed a giant, unnatural structure or facility (or group of them) that was still "active" to some degree, and its activity was directly related to the continuously emitted anomaly fluctuations!
It was very likely the "fallen" Silent Corridor unit (or similar facility) that had sent the ancient warning!
And the fluctuations it emitted, as well as its own "activity," were likely related to the "stolen key" and "distorted Echoes," or might even be some kind of continuous, unknown "operation" or "experiment" being conducted there by the "traitor" using the "key"!
"We... found 'it'." Stardust's voice carried a hint of dryness, but her eyes were startlingly bright.
Yes, they had found it. Although it was still distant and shrouded in mist, the "shadow" lurking in the depths of the darkness, which might be the source of all crises, had for the first time had its outline touched by them in this extremely indirect way.
However, before they could recover from this shocking discovery, S-001's voice sounded again, and this time, its tone rarely carried a hint of urgency:
"Warning! Detected an abnormal, high-priority information flow disturbance from the direction of the 'the gate'! Not Chaos background noise, not Heart-Devouring Demon activity characteristics, signal structure parsing... parsing failed, signal encryption level is extremely high, but energy characteristics... show a 15% weak match with the Silent Corridor system's underlying protocol! Signal strength is rapidly increasing, propagation direction... points toward this region!"
What?!
Everyone turned their heads sharply, looking at the eternal giant gate standing outside the porthole. They saw that the faint, chaotic shimmering light between the the gate's cracks now seemed to be... fluctuating more violently? As if a stone had been thrown into a calm lake.
Immediately following, a clear, cold thought stream with an unquestionable sense of authority, yet simultaneously giving an unspeakable, twisted, and eerie feeling, acted directly on the high-level information plane. Like an invisible tide, it ignored some of the blockage from the "Silence" field, instantly sweeping through the core area of the entire Silent Corridor. It was also clearly transmitted into the consciousness of every individual within the ranger with sufficient information reception capability (Excellence, Stardust, Mute, White Elder, and even Evelyn):
"Full-spectrum broadcast (Emergency Protocol - Highest Priority)"
"Sender: Authority Identifier Obscured - Tribunal/Balance Council - Emergency Communication Protocol**""
"Recipient: All Silent Corridor units, associated observation stations, secondary authority nodes."
"Instruction Content:"
"Detected a regional severe shift in the 'Chaos-Order' Balance Axis. Deviation source coordinates: Gamma-7, Delta-3, Epsilon-11 (Highly overlapping with the direction of the monitored anomaly fluctuation!). Nature of deviation: High risk, suspected to be related to illegal 'key' activities and large-scale 'echo' distortion."
"Now, based on Chapter 7, Article 3 of the 'Ultimate Balance Code,' we are initiating the 'Purge Protocol - Purify Deviation' contingency plan."
"All units receiving this instruction, immediately enter the highest state of alert. Designated units with 'Purge' authority and capability (list has been issued in encrypted form), assemble at the deviation source coordinates immediately to execute purification operations."
"Other units, hold your positions, strengthen monitoring, and guard against the intensification of Chaos erosion and the possible spread of 'twisted derivatives.'"
"Priority of this instruction: Absolute. Repeat, priority of this instruction: Absolute."
"For the purity of Order, for the continuity of Balance."
"——Eternal Tribunal/Balance Council (Emergency Signature - Verification Code: Data Corrupted)""
The broadcast ended.
That cold, majestic thought stream, carrying an unquestionable will for destruction, quickly dissipated like a receding tide.
Inside the ranger, there was dead silence.
Everyone was stunned into silence by this sudden "highest instruction," which supposedly came from the "Main System" but had such soul-stirring content.
"Purge Protocol - Purify Deviation"? Assembling at the deviation source (the source of the anomaly fluctuation they monitored!) to execute "purification"?
This... was the "headquarters" finally discovering that "fallen" or "abnormal" facility and sending people to "clean house"?!
But... there seemed to be a problem with the sender's identity verification (data corrupted), and the cold, absolute sense of destruction in the instruction had a faint sense of discordance with the previous description of the Silent Corridor as an "incubator" and "observation station."
"Do Not Trust..." The three words from the ancient warning boomed in Excellence's mind like a cold alarm bell.
This sudden "Purge" instruction, which seemed to be issued by the "Main System"... was it a timely rain, a signal for reinforcements, or... another more sophisticated and more lethal trap?
The "Ripples" had risen, and the "Shadows" were lingering. A storm sweeping across the boundaries of "Order" and "Chaos" seemed to be truly brewing and exploding, centered on that distant shadow they had just indirectly "touched."
The bridge lights seemed to dim for a moment, as if matching this sudden sense of tension. Everyone's heart was in their throat, a premonition that the mountain rain was coming and the black clouds were pressing down on the city silently spread.
And in the lowest level of the bridge, deep within an unnoticed redundant node used for processing discarded data streams, that fragment of data that had been considered "completely destroyed" during the scan was quietly and extremely slowly changing its own entropy value. It had not been purified, nor had it been detected; it just lay dormant, like a deeply buried seed, waiting for a specific, faint "echo" from the "key" to wake it up.
In the depths of the darkness, those "eyes" seemed to blink.
