Chapter 156: Recruits
Chapter 156: Chapter 156: RecruitsThe soft glow of a bedside lamp cast warm shadows across the opulent room. Nicolau Silva lay beside his wife, Isabella, the sounds of their child’s distant giggles drifting in from the adjoining room. The adrenaline of the past day, the shocking revelations, had slowly receded, replaced by a profound, unsettling peace. He turned to Isabella, tracing the curve of her jaw with his thumb.
"Something’s different about you, Nicolau," Isabella murmured, her voice laced with concern. "You’re... quieter. And your eyes. There’s a fire in them I haven’t seen in years."
Nicolau smiled faintly. "I met a man today, Isabella. A very powerful man. More powerful than anyone I’ve ever encountered. He showed me things... things that will change everything." He reached for a small, velvet pouch he’d placed on the nightstand. "I want you to have this."
He pulled out the polished stone amulet Richard had given him, the Vesica Piscis symbol subtly etched into its surface. He fastened it around her neck. "Wear it, Isabella. Always. It’s a symbol of... protection. A connection to something ancient, something sacred." He watched her fingers trace the symbol, a frown of curiosity on her face. "Trust me on this."
Later, in the quiet intimacy of the night, after their whispered conversations had lulled, Isabella’s fingers brushed against Nicolau’s back. She felt the subtle raised pattern of his new tattoo. "What’s this, meu amor?" she asked softly, her voice tinged with surprise. "A new mark? When did you get this?"
Nicolau chuckled, a low rumble in his chest. "Just yesterday. It’s a symbol of protection, minha vida. And of interconnectedness. A reminder that everything, everyone, is linked." He didn’t elaborate, knowing she wouldn’t fully grasp the depth of it yet. Not until she saw it herself. Soon. Soon, she’ll understand.
Just then, the door creaked open, and their son, Mateo, a bright-eyed boy of six, padded into the room, clutching a worn stuffed jaguar. "Papai! Mamae! Can I sleep with you?" he whispered, his eyes wide.
Isabella pulled back the covers, making space. Mateo scrambled in, nestling between them. This was their ritual, their precious family bonding time, a sacred haven from the brutal world Nicolau inhabited.
"Papai," Mateo piped up, his voice muffled against Nicolau’s chest, "When will we go to space? You promised to take me, like in my books!"
Nicolau squeezed him gently. "Sooner than you think, little warrior. But only if you always pray. Keep your faith strong."
Mateo pushed himself up, his brow furrowed. "But I always do pray, Papai! Every day! Before bed and after breakfast!"
Nicolau ruffled his son’s hair, a genuine warmth spreading through him. "Then you’re doing wonderfully, filho. In fact, if you want, I’ll introduce you to someone who can take you to space. Someone who makes incredible things happen." Someone who can take all of us to a safer future.
He looked at Isabella, a silent message passing between them. "Isabella," he began, his voice dropping to a serious tone, "I’m making arrangements. Soon, I want to move you and Mateo. To a safer place. A place where nothing can touch you. A hidden place." He paused, choosing his words carefully. "I’ll introduce you to this man. In the meantime, I want you to start packing essentials. Discreetly. Little by little. We will live there, for a while. It’s temporary, until this... conflict is over."
Isabella’s hand found his, her grip firm. "This conflict... you mean the war with the PCC? Has it started already?" A shadow of worry crossed her face.
"Not yet," Nicolau reassured her, squeezing her hand. "There’s so much to do first. Preparation before all of that will happen. But it’ll be sooner than later. I just want you two to be safe and ready for anything. For everything."
Isabella sighed, a mix of apprehension and trust in her eyes. She leaned her head on his shoulder. "Don’t worry about it, meu amor. Just promise me you’ll come back to us."
Nicolau kissed the top of her head, then Mateo’s. I will, he thought, and I will make sure we all come back. To a world free from the shadows. His resolve hardened. His family’s safety was paramount.
-----------------
Seven days later, the change was subtle but undeniable. Commando Vermelho’s ubiquitous skull head with guns symbol had been replaced. Now, on flags fluttering from makeshift poles and painted crudely on the sides of trucks, was a stylized, red-themed Vesica Piscis. To outsiders, it was just a new gang motif, perhaps a nod to some obscure indigenous belief. But to the men, especially the first batch of 300 recruits, handpicked by Ciano and Nicolau, it carried a weight of profound, almost religious significance.
They rumbled along a deeply rutted jungle track in a convoy of worn, heavy-duty trucks, the air thick with exhaust and anticipation. Murmurs filled the truck beds.
"Where exactly are we going, man?" a young recruit named Miguel whispered to his buddy, Pedro, as the truck bounced violently over a root. "Boss Nicolau just said ’pack a few clothes, you’re reassigned.’ But this ain’t no new outpost."
Pedro shrugged, adjusting his worn backpack. "Ciano’s leading. That’s all I need to know. After what happened with the boss... and Cortez... I ain’t questioning nothing." He touched a crude, hastily drawn Vesica Piscis on his arm, a mark of recent faith.
"They say it’s a hidden training camp," another voice chimed in from the back, a grizzled veteran named Santos. "Something special. For the chosen." He’d seen Nicolau’s demonstration. He still couldn’t fully process it, but it had shaken his hardened skepticism to its core.
The convoy pressed on, deeper and deeper into a part of the Amazon few had ever seen. The air grew heavier, the canopy thicker, until the sun became a mere suggestion above. Then, abruptly, the lead truck slowed.
Ahead, through a parting in the dense foliage, glimmered the still, pristine surface of Lake Pereira. The trucks pulled to a halt along its bank. The men, dusty and cramped, piled out, stretching their limbs, grumbling softly.
"What’s the holdup?" Miguel asked, shading his eyes. "Just a lake?"
But as Ciano, towering and silent, emerged from the lead truck, a low, guttural gasp rippled through the crowd. The tranquil water of Lake Pereira began to ripple, not from wind, but from an unseen force beneath. A colossal circle of water, hundreds of meters wide, began to rise, then peel back, rip open, as if a giant, invisible hand was tearing apart the fabric of reality. It revealed not mud, but an impossibly vast, perfectly smooth, obsidian-black shaft that plunged into the earth. Steam hissed faintly as the water retreated.
"Mother of God..." João whispered, his voice hoarse, crossing himself. Pedro just stared, his jaw hanging open. "What in all hell is that?"
From the depths of the gaping hole, a colossal, perfectly circular platform, glowing faintly, began to elevate with agonizing slowness. It broke the surface, droplets of water clinging to its pristine sides, and continued to rise until it was level with the lake’s bank. It was massive, easily capable of holding all their trucks.
Ciano stepped onto the platform, his figure silhouetted against the bright interior of the shaft. He gestured, a silent, imperious command. "One by one. Drive forward."
Hesitantly, the first driver, his face pale, maneuvered his truck onto the immense platform. The sheer scale, the otherworldly silence of the colossal structure, was overwhelming. More trucks followed, their engines roaring softly as they parked. Even the most jaded drivers were utterly stunned, muttering prayers or just staring into the abyss.
"This ain’t no training camp, Santos," Miguel whispered, his voice trembling. "This is... this is something out from a movie."
Santos, for once, had no answer. He could only stare.
Once the last truck was positioned, a low, resonant BZZZZZZT echoed through the cavernous space. The massive platform emitted a beeping sound, and slowly, inexorably, it began to descend. Above them, the colossal ceiling, the very surface of Lake Pereira, slid back into place, sealing them off from the world they knew. The last sliver of sunlight vanished, replaced by the cool, artificial glow of the descending shaft.
Murmurs of fear and wonder erupted. "We’re going into hell!" someone cried, quickly hushed. "This is impossible! It’s a trick!" "No trick, brother, this is a miracle!"
The descent was smooth, silent, lasting several unnerving minutes. Then, with a soft thunk, the platform stopped. A disembodied voice, calm and sterile, echoed through the shaft in perfect Portuguese: "Welcome. Level Minus Two: Command and Operations Nexus."
As the platform rotated slowly, the men saw it: a massive, illuminated wall with a detailed map outline, stretching into the distance. Highlighted departments pulsed with soft light: Parking Area, Receiving Area, Security HQ, Mission Control, Monitoring Grid. The entire outline of every department area was shaped like a donut, with the main egress hole in the middle, making it easy to locate everything. As they peered down the platform, the egress hole was indeed massive, and the depths seemed to extend into an abyss, terrifying in its unknown expanse.
Ciano, now on a small, all-terrain vehicle, drove off the platform and onto the driveway. He looked back at the stunned faces. "Move!" he barked, his voice echoing. "Follow me! Drivers, get your trucks to the parking area!"
The trucks lurched forward, following Ciano onto the expansive, brightly lit driveway. They arrived at an immense parking area, where other, smaller, futuristic-looking vehicles were neatly lined up.
"Everyone out of the trucks!" Ciano shouted, his voice ringing with authority. "Follow me! Now!"
The men, disoriented but obedient, scrambled out. They were the chosen, handpicked by Ciano and Nicolau for their loyalty and their fierce, often desperate, faith. They had only been told to grab a few clothes from their house and get ready to be reassigned.
Now, they wondered if they had forgotten if they had signed up to go to space or something, because this... this was too advanced, too unbelievable. They followed Ciano, his imposing figure large and tall enough to be seen even by the last man who hopped off, a silent anchor in their confusion.
They followed him down a wide, clean hallway, a stark comparison to their grimy jungle compound. The air here was cool, sterile, circulating with a faint, metallic scent. Through a translucent wall, they could glimpse the stadium-sized egress hole they had just descended, now sealed. Androids, sleek and silent, moved with purpose, cleaning, fixing electric panels, performing their tasks with an unsettling efficiency. Then, a few more figures emerged, drawing gasps from the men: female human-looking androids, dressed in crisp, military-style uniforms, their faces serene. They smiled faintly, almost imperceptibly, and gestured towards a wide doorway.
"Receiving Area," one of the androids said, her voice soft but clear, her movements graceful. "Please proceed. We will guide you."
The men shuffled forward, a mix of fear and sheer curiosity propelling them. At the receiving area, security scanners lined the entrance to a large, sterile room. Ciano stood by them, his gaze firm. "Let yourselves be scanned," he instructed. "Stand for one second. You will receive your ID."
A nervous, scrawny recruit named Luiz volunteered first. He stepped onto the marked platform. A soft hum emanated from the scanners. A moment later, a metal, sleek ID card slid out of a slot. Luiz picked it up. His eyes widened. It had his picture, his real name, his personal information, all accurate. It was scary, terrifying in its precision, yet undeniably efficient. He passed through, holding his new ID like a precious, forbidden artifact.
"After the scanners, Proceed to the next room," Ciano instructed, pointing.
In the next room, a lounge awaited. It was unlike anything they had ever seen. Plush seating, soft lighting, and more beautiful human-looking android servers circulated, carrying trays laden with snacks and refreshing drinks. Holographic monitors shimmered on elegant tables, displaying abstract patterns and soft, glowing light. The men stood at the threshold, awestruck.
Ciano gestured to the seating. "Please everyone sit down," he commanded, his voice firm but now tinged with a hint of something else—hospitality. "You are free to request any food to the ladies. They are here to serve you."
Most of the men were quite uncomfortable, being in such a luxurious room while still dressed in their sweat-stained, jungle-worn clothes. They shifted uneasily, unsure how to interact with the perfectly serene androids. But there were others who just didn’t care about it, their awe at the place outweighing any social discomfort. They simply stared, their minds grappling with the new reality unfolding before their eyes.
