Chapter 229 - 229: The Gambit
"Even in the shadow of apocalypse, even a small mischief is a spark of light."
The air above the devastated continent crackled with residual energy. Both dragons, Terralia and Mainu, ceased their battle. The landscape bore witness to their struggle. Mountains had been vaporized, their peaks replaced by smoking craters. Valleys were now vast, glassed-over plains where beams of pure energy had scoured the earth. Ancient forests were reduced to ash, and the very crust of the planet was fractured, bleeding molten rock in places. The continent, once vibrant, was a monument to their destructive power.
Terralia, her shimmering scales dulled, her light flickering erratically, stood heavily, her breath coming in ragged gasps. A deep gouge ran along her flank, leaking faint, golden ichor that sizzled on the scorched ground.
She had managed to force Mainu back, pushing him away from Earth, but not without a terrible price. Her strength was depleted, her body aching. Her thoughts, however, weren't on her own pain, nor on the destruction around her. Her mind raced, a cold dread gripping her. Her egg wasn't in her temple anymore. Mainu's forces had moved it.
She wasn't worried about her child's immediate safety; she was sure Mainu, blinded by his paternal love, would do anything to protect it. The only thing she was truly worried about was Mainu's increasing strength. Throughout their brutal, three-months fight, she had felt it—his chaos power growing, adapting, becoming more formidable with each exchange. She was worried that the next fight would be her last, that she wouldn't be able to hold him back. Her only solution was to quickly find a cure for their child, so that Mainu's chaos would subside, and eventually, the Krill contract would break, and this devastating war would be over.
Meanwhile, Mainu had returned to his temple on Mars. The planet, though now scarred by the Krill's harvesting and human defenses, still retained vast, unstable rainforests in its equatorial regions, a stark contrast to Earth's lushness.
Inside his temple, a vast, cavernous space carved deep into a Martian mountain, a single Krill officer stood beside a pedestal. On it, nestled within a shimmering obsidian crystal, rested the Dragon egg, emanating a strong, psionic energy that pulsed with a dark, unsettling light.
The Krill officer, his reptilian face impassive, bowed low. "My lord, I have successfully retrieved the egg as you have asked. It is secure."
Mainu, his voice a low rumble of satisfaction, settled his colossal form onto a massive stone dais. "Good. Now I can focus on absorbing this planet's energy. I can finish this once and for all. The sooner I can finish her off, the sooner I can instill fear on humans, and the sooner my child awakens. This is the only way." His eyes, burning with a cold, desperate resolve, fixed on the officer. "Now go. Take my child somewhere safe. It's only a matter of time before Terralia finds out our fight was just a diversion. Since she's heavily injured, I'll take my time absorbing this planet down to its core. She will not be able stop me again."
The officer bowed politely, his movements precise. "Yes, my lord. It shall be done." He took the egg, its obsidian shell cool against his hands, and exited the grand hallway.
As he moved through the temple's shadowed corridors, the Krill officer's form began to shimmer. The reptilian humanoid shape rippled, distorting, then slowly transitioned. Scales receded, skin smoothed, and his height shrank. The segmented Krill armor melted away, replaced by sleek, dark leather and intricate Asgardian plating. Long, elegant horns, like polished obsidian, sprouted from his head. A smirk, cunning and ancient, spread across his now human-like face. He faded into the shadows, the egg floating silently behind him, its chaotic energy a dim glow.
It was Loki.
Sometime later, a shimmering portal opened in the deepest chamber of Atlantis, the grand, crystalline sanctuary hidden beneath the waves. Loki, strode confidently in, the massive dragon egg floating effortlessly behind him, its dark energy pulsing.
Poseidon, seated at the great circular table, looked up, a wide grin spreading across his face. "Well, well, well! Look who it is! The prodigal son returns, and with a rather large delivery, I see!"
Hephaestus, hunched over a workbench, his brow furrowed in concentration, didn't even turn. He was meticulously tinkering with a strange, dark cylinder that pulsed with an erratic, unsettling shift from dark purple to deep blue. The air around him shimmered with heat.
Vishnu, his multi-limbed form radiating calm, rose and patted Loki warmly on the shoulder. "Heyy, Loki, my boy! I knew you could do it! Always the one for grand gestures, aren't you?"
Loki raised his hands, receiving the compliments with a theatrical flourish. "Come on, guys, it's nothing! You know me. Just a little bit of cunning, a dash of misdirection, and a whole lot of nerve." He gave the egg a gentle nudge, sending it floating towards Archdemon Lucifer, who sat silently, his red eyes fixed on the pulsating artifact. "Here, Lucifer. Handle with care. It's… quite fragile."
Poseidon leaned forward, his grin fading slightly. "So, how's the battle going on up there?"
Loki settled into an empty seat, a faint sigh escaping him. "It's going better than expected, actually. Everything's going as planned. The Krill invasion fleet is busy with our… more enthusiastic brethren. The surface war is a bloody stalemate. But we should hurry, though. That dragon is naive, yes, but the Krill search party will inform him anytime soon that the egg isn't in Terralia's temple. Which means he's gonna be royally pissed I stole his child."
Vishnu, his serene expression momentarily clouded with concern, glanced at the egg. "W-what's the plan again, Loki? Because I'm scared. Mainu is… formidable. Just us fighting him seems… more suicidal."
Loki leaned back, a confident smirk playing on his lips. "Simple. I steal the egg, which I did just now. The lizards inform Mainu that the egg has been stolen. He's pissed off, searches for it, and we bait him with the chaos energy from Satan's dimension, which Asmodeus here will help us channel. He's gonna bite the worm, right into our trap. Then, we use Hephy's bomb to flood Earth for thousands of years, hopefully it's enough to damage Mainu because he is growing stronger. We need to hit him with something he won't expect."
Hephaestus, without looking up, grunted. "Ohhh… it's strong alright. The thing you should be worried about is if the planet is strong enough to withstand the explosion. It's a dark-matter bomb, you imbeciles. Not a firecracker." His voice was laced with a craftsman's pride and a hint of madness.
Loki's smirk widened. "That's great, Hephy! Always the optimist."
Poseidon and Vishnu exchanged wide-eyed glances. "Woah, woah, woah, woah!" Poseidon exclaimed, his voice losing its usual calm. "Isn't that too strong? Flooding the entire planet? For thousands of years?"
Hephaestus finally turned, his eyes blazing with a terrifying intensity, dropping the glowing fragment onto his workbench with a clang. "You should ask the black dragon that question, Poseidon! If we want to kill him, it should be strong enough to at least give him an injury that lasts forever. Something that will break his regeneration. Besides, all it can cause is for Pangea to split up into fragments of smaller continents, the planet's rotation goes to shit for thousands of years before it stabilizes again. A minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things, don't you think?" He gestured dismissively to the holographic map of Earth.
Vishnu looking concerned, interjected, "What about the refugees, though? The other civilians? The non-transcendants?"
Hephaestus sighed, running a hand over his face. "Lemuria is safe. Yahweh, has taken them to his own pocket dimension, a realm of pure light and peace. Hel is also safe, a sanctuary provided by Satan for those who seek refuge in the shadows. The Egyptian tribes, Aztecs, Nordics, and the Maharlika kingdom… they aren't going to be spared. They've been fighting off the Krill ground forces from taking more people. They are waiting. They would rather die than be captured and enslaved." His voice was heavy with the weight of their sacrifice. "However, the Atlanteans here, will be taken to Agartha. There's a vortex deep beneath the crust, beneath us, that will take us there."
Poseidon nodded solemnly. "It's just sad that we had to leave those people behind, but we must respect their sacrifices for the plan to work. Their courage will not be forgotten."
Loki stood up, his gaze sweeping over the council. "Then let's get this over with quickly. Every moment we delay, more lives are lost." Archangel Gabriel and Archdemon Lucifer, who had been silently observing, looked at Loki. Lucifer, still telekinetically floating the huge egg, spoke. "Sir Loki, we'd like to escort you to Lord Terralia's temple. We need to ensure the egg is placed there for the next phase."
Loki smiled, a genuine, rare expression. "Come on, any help is accepted. The more the merrier." As Loki opened a shimmering portal, a gateway to Terralia's sanctuary, and stepped in along with Archangel Gabriel and Archdemon Lucifer, Vishnu turned to Hephaestus. "Is that thing ready, Hephy-san?"
Hephaestus, wiping his brow with a greasy rag, grunted. "Yep, all it needs now is the fragment. The kid will activate it. Then we can take this thing above, at the center of the city. We're gonna use the chaos crystal to bait Mainu, in which Archdemon Asmodeus here will help us." Asmodeus, smiled and bowed, a silent acknowledgment of his role. Hephaestus continued, his eyes gleaming with a manic excitement, "And then explode the whole thing right in that winged lizard's face."
Everyone looked at the hooded figure in the corner, who remained utterly still. Hephaestus, with a grunt, neared the unknown fragment to him. The hooded figure, he simply touched it for two seconds. His arm, beneath his cloak, formed a network of glowing lines, like circuits, that connected to the fragment and activated it, slowly pulsing with a dark, contained energy.
Hephaestus, still uneasy about the mysterious figure, but trusting the man's power, said, "Thanks, kid." He returned to the bomb and inserted the pulsing fragment into a designated slot. The bomb, once a dull cylinder, now pulsed erratically, its dark energy swirling within.
Hephaestus then turned to the remaining transcendants. "Now, everyone here should evacuate. Should you not want to experience dark matter washing over you, I suggest you leave."
Poseidon sighed. "Fine. Mazu, let's go. This place is about to get… messy." He led Mazu out, their forms shimmering as they passed through the chamber's exit. Vishnu followed, and the other archdemons and archangels, their faces a mixture of awe and trepidation. It was only Hephaestus, Asmodeus, and the hooded figure left.
Hephaestus asked the figure, "So, aren't you supposed to go with them? To safety?"
The hooded figure shook his head, his voice a low, resonant hum. "No. My goal now is to make sure the events are happening without any hitches or segways. The egg will be found by my great-great-great-great-grandfather, in the future, four hundred two thousand and fifteen years from now. All that is left is to spread this in the air." He showed a vial full of silvery powder, almost invisible against his dark cloak. "And everything should proceed as it is."
Hephaestus sighed, a deep, weary sound. "I still don't understand the whole time concept thing, kid, but I'm glad you're with us. Your presence… it's reassuring." He patted him on the shoulder, a rare gesture of affection from the gruff smith god. He looked at Asmodeus, his eyes hardening. "Our sacrifice will not be for naught. Now let's take this up, and not waste it." Asmodeus nodded, his burning eyes fixed on the bomb. Together, they lifted the pulsating dark-matter bomb, its immense weight a testament to its destructive power, to take it up towards the center of the city of Atlantis, right on the surface, where Mainu would surely come.
