Chapter 232 - 232: The Beginning of An End
"A paradox is a sacrifice in a closed system, a single life for an impossible future."
Outside the temple, a strong gust of wind, smelling of ozone and fury, tore through the air. Terralia, her form radiating a fierce, golden light despite her injuries, braced herself. "He's here," she said, her voice a low growl. "Loki, prepare yourself."
"I am always ready, my lady," Loki replied, his smirk a stark contrast to the tension in the air. He leaned casually against a pillar, his form disguised as the officer who had deceived Mainu. Beside him, the illusory replica of the dragon egg pulsed with a convincing echo of chaos energy.
Mainu landed with a crash that shook the temple's foundations, his massive form exuding a dark, oppressive aura. "Terralia!" he bellowed, his voice a thunderous roar. "Where is my child?"
Terralia, her rage a carefully constructed mask, charged forward. "This is my child too, Mainu! What gives you the right to claim it by yourself?" she retorted, her voice filled with a fabricated fury. Mainu ignored her and his gaze fell on Loki, who was leaning nonchalantly in the corner. "You, bastard," Mainu snarled, his eyes burning with a cold, hateful fire. Loki, with a theatrical flourish, dropped his disguise and smirked, examining his fingernails with feigned boredom. "It's not my fault you're so easy to trick."
Mainu's anger, however, was unnervingly calm. "As soon as I am done with her, I will enjoy my time eating you alive," he promised, his voice low and full of menace. He suddenly lunged, his clawed hand shooting not at Terralia, but at Loki and the illusory egg. Terralia, anticipating this, moved with a speed that belied her wounds, slashing his face with a shimmering claw and charging him into the temple wall. Mainu, however, easily stood, the wound on his face already healing, and said, "Don't make me do this, Terralia. We can still be a family."
Terralia, breathing hard and enduring the pain from her injuries, stood her ground. "I'll have to die before you take the child," she spat. Mainu sneered, then his posture changed. A flicker of confusion crossed his face as he sensed something amiss. "I can't believe you would resort to deceptions, Terralia. What a disappointment." He scoffed and backed away, sensing the energy from the egg was not real. Terralia, playing her part perfectly, feigned a look of worry and then enraged frustration as he turned. "Mainu! Don't even try!" she roared, flying after him toward Atlantis.
Loki sighed, the illusion of the egg fading into nothingness. He smiled, a genuine, weary smile, before conjuring a portal and stepping through it.
On the other side, Loki arrived at the center pavilion of Atlantis. Standing there were Lethunia and Asmodeus, channeling the chaos crystal that pulsed, sending waves of dark energy through the city's streets. "Oh," Loki said, his eyes scanning the area. "Where's Hephaestus?"
Asmodeus glanced at Lethunia before answering. "He decided to go to Agartha. Loki nodded, understanding that this must be a necessary and final part of the messenger's sacrifice.
He took a deep breath, steeling himself, and conjured another illusory egg, this one even more detailed than the last, focusing on every tiny crystalline shard of the obsidian. He sweated, the effort of the illusion almost a physical burden, and said, "That should do it."
Lethunia smiled and nodded, a serene acceptance on his face. He reached into his robe, took out the silver cylinder, and opened it. Asmodeus and Loki watched as a cloud of shimmering silver dust motes flew away, scattering into the air. Lethunia's entire body became enveloped in a gentle light, slowly disintegrating. "What a good day to return to the first spark," he said, his voice filled with a calm satisfaction.
Just then, they heard a roar. Loki snapped his head around.
In the distance, Mainu was flying towards them, with Terralia giving chase and firing beams at him. Mainu dodged the beams, firing back, a battle of pursuit playing out across the sky. Loki quickly conjured an invisibility field around them, but it didn't seem to affect Lethunia.
"That wouldn't work on someone who only has a minute left to exist," Lethunia said, his smile serene.
Loki felt a pang of sadness. He couldn't believe what it took for a man to sacrifice his very existence just to change the future. Even Asmodeus, the Archdemon of Lust, was confused, but he refocused, channeling the chaos crystal with renewed vigor.
Terralia, chasing Mainu, couldn't help but smile, a faint, melancholic expression. The plan was working. Her eyes caught Lethunia's figure in the distance, slowly disappearing into nothingness. She sped up, enduring the searing pain of her injuries. Mainu landed first, skidding to a halt in the middle of Atlantis's main street, his figure towering over the houses. He turned to face Terralia, a sneer on his lips. "You really want to die that badly, huh?"
Terralia didn't seem a bit deterred, despite her grievous injuries. Mainu felt a sharp, agonizing pain in his heart and shouted, "Do you really want to die that badly?!" He charged his arm, molding his clawed hand into a spear of pure dark energy. He gritted his teeth, holding back tears as memories of their life together flashed before his eyes—a life of shared laughter, quiet moments, and the promise of a child. But he was resolved to save his child, even if it meant destroying their love.
Terralia didn't even flinch, still coming towards him, her determination a grim, beautiful fire. As soon as she was close, he screamed, a sound torn from his soul, and lunged his arm towards her. The dark spear of his hand pierced her chest, and golden blood splattered from her mouth, a divine light mixing with crimson.
Terralia's smile never faltered. Her life was fading from her eyes, but her resolve was absolute. With her last ounce of energy and strength, she pushed back against Mainu's figure, slowly but surely, guiding him towards the center of the pavilion.
Terralia didn't flinch, still charging towards him despite her wounds. Mainu felt a sharp pain in his heart, a deep, unbearable ache. He shouted, "Why?! Why would you do this?! We could've spent our time alone as a family on a planet with nothing but us, but no! You chose these insects over us! You chose these insects over your own family! Your child! Me! Why?! Why?!" His eyes finally gave way for his tears, looking at her.
Terralia smiled at him, her voice weak, but her resolve unshakeable. She used her remaining strength, pushing Mainu's body towards the center of the pavilion, where the illusory egg stood. Mainu, still grieving, carefully stepped around her, his eyes fixed on the fake egg, convinced it was the real one.
Terralia, her life fading, caressed his cheek. "Life isn't just about us," she whispered. "Life can be about sacrifice, memories, facing the inevitable. Without struggle, without pain, without love, there is no such thing as life." She pushed him one last time, her voice growing weaker. "Without death there is no life and sometimes life..." She smiled one last time, closing her eyes as her hand dropped. "…is all just about time."
Everything went white.
From orbit, an army of transcendants stood, facing the Krill Empire's main battlefleet. Odin, Zeus, Satan, and Yahweh, watching from their distant observation points, a white explosion blossomed on the surface. The clouds parted, the oceans parted, and for a moment, they could see the very ocean floor.
"It finally happened, huh, brother?" Satan said, his voice a low rumble.
Yahweh nodded, his expression somber. "Yes. I finally felt the planet's energy shifting. The inevitable cataclysm is now evitable. Our descendants will finally have a chance to fight back. I was worried about the wrong thing; I kept seeing visions of our species' end, desperately seeking a solution. I even blamed the cause of it, on you. It turns out, I was wrong and a great change must occur, so great that it needs a great sacrifice. Sometimes, to succeed, you have to start all over again."
Satan scoffed, but there was no malice in it. "True. So, when are we coming back?"
Yahweh gestured for everyone to prepare to move. "In time. Despite this great change, we must leave information for our descendants, an origin they can look up to. They may make a religion out of it, but it is an indication that we are coming back to help fight the great cataclysm, the dark dimension's invasion."
Satan smiled. "The second coming, huh? That's a good idea." He stepped into a vortex he had conjured.
Odin sighed, turning to Zeus. "Let's go, brother. Hopefully, you left a note for your kingdom somewhere."
"That I did," Zeus replied with a wry smile, disappearing in a flash of lightning. Odin followed, a deep melancholy etched on his face. Everyone disappeared, leaving the empty posts behind.
The entire Krill Empire was in shock. Their flagship, hovering in orbit, witnessed the self-destruction of their farm. On the bridge, Emperor Kharvann slumped, a mix of fury and disbelief on his face. "Did our pet survive?"
The four young kings, their faces pale, stood nearby. "Yes, your majesty. Lord Mainu needs time to regenerate."
"That puppet still lives, huh?" Kharvann said, his voice laced with venom. "Have you prepared the replacement?"
The four kings nodded. "Yes, my lord. The artificial egg has been completed. It is no different from the real one."
Kharvann stood, his form radiating cold purpose. "Let's just take what we have harvested and go. The time for games is over." The four kings nodded, their gazes as cold and empty as their emperor's.
