Chapter 222 - 222: The Dance of Titans
"When two forces of nature collide, the universe holds its breath."
The Chaos Dragon, Mainu, still reeling from the unexpected blow, stared at the blue and silver humanoid machine. Its ancient, golden eyes narrowed, trying to process what had just happened. Who is that? Why didn't I see his attack? No energy signature, no kinetic trail… he just appeared! A cold, unsettling realization dawned on him. He… is dangerous. More dangerous than any primitive I have encountered. I won't be able to change into my true form, not with him stopping me. Not with this new variable. The transformation, which had begun to shift its scales to dark purple, stopped, unable to complete under the sudden, focused attack.
Mainu snarled, a low, rumbling sound that vibrated through the void. It had underestimated these humans, and this… this thing in the blue and silver armor. Arrogance had nearly cost it a critical evolution. It had to create distance.
With a sudden, violent burst of speed, Mainu lashed its tail, propelling itself away from Richard at sublight speeds, a golden blur streaking towards the scattered human fleet. Its intention was clear: unleash a devastating beam, cripple their command, and then escape to complete its transformation.
But Richard, anticipating its move, was already there. One moment he was hovering near Mainu, the next he was directly in front of the Dragon, a blue-and-silver wall of defiance. The Prometheus X-19, powered by Richard's transcendent energy, moved with impossible speed, a blur of motion even to Mainu's enhanced perception. Richard threw a punch. Not a simple punch, but a strike imbued with the raw, focused power of a demi-god.
Mainu, reacting on instinct, materialized a shield just in time. Not its phase shield, which was still recovering, but a pure psionic barrier, golden and shimmering. It absorbed the attack, a massive concussive force that rippled through the void, pushing Mainu back hundreds of meters. The shield flared violently, flickering like a dying flame after just one punch. This isn't good, Mainu thought, its ancient mind racing. His physical strength… it rivals my full psionic output. It glanced towards the human fleet, still standing by, watching. For now, the human fleet is standing by, watching. But I don't intend to go on this honorably.
As Mainu gathered energy, preparing to unleash a devastating beam onto the human fleets, Richard's voice, now clear and resonant through the Prometheus's external comms, boomed. "Where are you looking?" Then, Richard punched again, a blur of motion. Mainu's shield flickered, deflecting the blow, but the impact still sent a tremor through its body. Mainu smiled, a cruel, predatory grin. So that works, huh?
Mainu roared, its golden scales flaring. It ceased trying to escape and instead lunged, its massive claws extended, its tail lashing, each strike capable of tearing a battleship in half. Richard met the assault head-on, deflecting the attacks with his very own psionic shield, a shimmering blue barrier that pulsed with contained power. The battle went on at sublight speeds, a dizzying, battle between two titans. They moved all over the place, a blur of golden and blue light, leaving trails of disrupted space in their wake. The void became their arena.
On the UEDCC Battlecruiser Retribution, Fleet Admiral Archembeau watched, her face a mask of awe and disbelief. "I… I can barely track them," she murmured, her voice barely audible over the bridge's hum. "Their velocity… it's off the charts. It's like watching two stars collide."
Captain Eva Rostova, still in her Paladin mecha, relayed from the asteroid belt. "Admiral, the Dragon and Prometheus are engaging in close quarters! They're moving too fast for accurate targeting! We're holding fire unless ordered!"
Meanwhile, back on Luna, in the TRC headquarters, Lina monitored Richard's vitals and the Prometheus X-19's system readouts. Her brow was furrowed, a faint sheen of sweat on her forehead. "Sir," she said over the comms, her voice tight with concern, "the crystalline muscle in Prometheus can only handle three to four more gigajoules of your psionic energy before critical strain. The internal dampeners are at ninety percent capacity!"
Richard's voice, calm amidst the furious exchange of blows, replied. "That's to be expected, Lina. The suit wasn't designed for this level of sustained output. I will end this in three hundred moves, hopefully." He exchanged blow after blow with the Dragon, left and right, a whirlwind of fists and claws.
Each impact sent shockwaves through the void, rattling distant asteroids. The suit's internal systems, designed for immense power, were slowly increasing their strain. The velocity and kinetic force generated by Richard's movements were pushing the very limits of the Prometheus X-19.
The captains and admirals across the solar system watched in stunned awe, their comms filled with gasps and exclamations. They couldn't comprehend the fight. It wasn't a battle they could follow with their eyes, just flashes of golden light and flashes of blue and silver, appearing and disappearing across the vastness of space. Sometimes, a distant roar would echo, or a ripple of displaced energy would wash over their ships.
Two hundred moves later, the two titans stopped. They hovered, facing each other, breathing heavily. The Prometheus X-19's armor shimmered, faintly smoking in places. Mainu's golden scales were scratched, its shield flickering, but its eyes held a new, sinister gleam.
Mainu laughed. A low, guttural chuckle that swelled into a booming, triumphant roar. "Hahahaha! Is this your first time fighting, human?" As it spoke, a dark, malevolent energy began to pulse from its body. Its transformation, which had been halted, quickly finished. The golden scales peeled away, replaced by dark purple, almost black, scales that seemed to absorb all light. Its eyes deepened to a chilling violet, burning with ancient, destructive power. Its form grew slightly, becoming even more monstrous, more primal.
Richard, watching the transformation, felt a cold dread. Shit… I didn't notice that. His mind raced, analyzing the new energy signature. What kind of energy is that? It's not just psionic… it's… chaotic. Destructive at a fundamental level.
Mainu's voice boomed, now deeper, more resonant, filled with terrifying power. "Now you will experience the full power of chaos. The power that consumed Terralia. The power that devoured Mars. The power that will feast on your pathetic planet!"
The Dragon disappeared. Not a warp jump, not a burst of speed, but a flicker, a distortion in space, and it reappeared directly behind Richard. It moved with a speed that defied comprehension, a true manifestation of chaos. Mainu slashed with a massive claw, tearing into the Prometheus X-19's side. The armor shrieked, a deep gouge appearing on the blue-and-silver plating.
Richard quickly moved away, his suit's thrusters flaring, but Mainu didn't give him an inch. It sped up, its dark purple scales shimmering, its new chaos energy leaving a trail of distorted space. The battle went on again, but the dynamic had shifted. Richard was slowly, losing. The Dragon was now faster, its attacks more precise, more devastating. The dark purple scales and the chaotic energy were a new, terrifying variable, one Richard hadn't accounted for.
Back on Luna, Lina watched the Prometheus X-19's energy readings plummet. The suit's structural integrity indicators flashed red. "Sir! You're taking critical damage! The suit can't keep up!" Her voice was laced with despair, her hands hovering uselessly over the console.
Lishnurak, Muma, Lila, and Namu watched the holographic display with grim faces. The Chaos Dragon, in its new, terrifying form, was a blur of dark purple, overwhelming Richard.
Elder Murak closed his eyes, a deep sigh escaping him. "The Chaos energy… it's a direct counter to pure psionic constructs. It unravels them. Richard's suit, his shield… they are being undone." He opened his eyes, a desperate plea in them. "He needs to find another way. He needs to use his balance. His human anchor."
"But how, Elder?!" Lina cried, tears welling in her eyes. "He's losing! He's going to die!"
"He must remember," Murak said, his voice firm. "Remember what he is. What he fights for. The purpose."
On the Vigilant, Admiral Yamada watched, his face ashen. The battle was now a blur of terrifying speed, impossible to follow. "Can anyone get a lock? Any weapon solution?"
Officer McThorne shook his head, his voice strained. "Negative, sir! Their speeds are too erratic! Our targeting systems can't compensate! It's like they're phasing in and out of reality!"
The golden dragon, now a terrifying dark purple, was systematically dismantling the Prometheus X-19. Each slash, each burst of chaos energy, sent the suit reeling. Richard was fighting, but it was a desperate, losing battle. The fate of Earth, of humanity, hung on the rapidly fading blue light of the Prometheus X-19.
