Chapter 223 - 223: The Reaper's Kiss
"To defeat a monster, you must understand its nature. And then, you must become something worse."
Richard's thoughts scrambled for answers, a frantic torrent of data and tactical analysis, as he dodged and counterattacked. The Prometheus X-19, usually an extension of his will, felt sluggish against Mainu's new, terrifying speed. The Dragon's dark obsidian scales, now pulsating with malicious purple energy, were harder than he thought. Every psionic punch, every focused blast from the Prometheus, seemed to destabilize and dissipate when it came in contact with that chaos energy. It was like trying to punch smoke, but smoke that hit back with the force of a supernova.
Shit! Shit! Shit! How do I beat this fucking lizard! For the first time since his transcendence, a cold, sharp panic gnawed at Richard. He looked at his internal consoles within the Prometheus X-19 cockpit. The mecha's AI, David, calmly notified him of electronic damages: [Primary targeting array: 40% efficiency. Secondary comms: intermittent. Life support: nominal.] But Richard wasn't worried about redundant systems. What truly concerned him was the damage done to the crystalline musculature in his mecha's limbs. They were slowly losing speed, the intricate energy conduits straining, causing a noticeable lag in response time.
Suddenly, Mainu let out a beam from its mouth. A thick, pulsating purple beam of pure chaos energy. Richard barely dodged it, the Prometheus X-19's thrusters flaring desperately, the heat wash scorching the void where he had just been. But the cost was immense. The beam, missing Richard, lanced through the human fleet. Several ships that had surrounded them, trying to maintain a defensive perimeter, were instantly vaporized. The UEDCC Destroyer Aegis, the TRC Frigate Sentinel, and two UEDCC battleships simply ceased to exist, replaced by expanding clouds of superheated gas.
Richard saw what that action cost. A cold fury, sharper than any panic, flared within him. He surged towards Mainu, hoping for a counterattack, a desperate gamble, weaving through the Dragon's erratic, sweeping purple beam.
Mainu smirked, a cruel smile on its vast maw. It saw Richard's desperate charge. With a subtle shift of its head, it moved its beam towards the remaining human ships, forcing them to scatter, to break formation. The ships, already reeling from the previous losses, veered wildly away from the path of destruction.
Richard, seeing his opportunity, sped up towards it, a direct, head-on assault. Or so he thought. Mainu, anticipating his move, rushed forward with impossible speed, a dark purple blur. It grabbed the Prometheus X-19's arms in its massive claws, the metal groaning under the immense pressure. Mainu pulled the mecha close, its eyes burning with malicious triumph, and prepared for a final, point-blank beam. The Chaos Dragon intended to finish this.
Richard's mind ran faster than ever before, processing every variable, every possible outcome. With a desperate surge of strength, he twisted the Prometheus's arms, tearing them free from Mainu's grasp, the crystalline musculature screaming in protest. Then, with the last of his mecha's kinetic power, he kicked the Dragon's jaw upwards. The purple beam, already forming, redirected, lancing harmlessly into the empty void above them. But the cost was devastating. The Prometheus was basically armless, its limbs dangling, sparking, the arm's crystalline musculature utterly destroyed.
Everyone who had seen it—the human fleet, Lina, the Ancients—thought it was basically over. The Dragon was clearly stronger, faster, and far more formidable.
Mainu laughed, a deep, evil rumble that echoed across the comms. "HAHAHAHAHA! Even though you're strong, you have little to no experience in fighting someone stronger, human! You fight with your instinct, not with your mind! You are still a child playing with fire!"
Richard's internal consoles flared red, warning him of catastrophic system failures. David's calm, synthesized voice reported: [Arm systems: offline. Propulsion: 60% efficiency. Life support: critical.] But Richard ignored it. He smiled. A slow, terrifying smile that held no fear, only a chilling resolve.
"Most would've surrendered at the face of disaster, cataclysm," Richard's voice, though strained, boomed across the comms, reaching every ship, every ear, even Mainu's. "They would've cowered at the face of terrifying horror. Some would've fought mindlessly, in hopes the tide of battle for honor would turn. But I say, that's pure bullshit." He paused, his glowing marks pulsing. "To achieve victory means you will do whatever it is necessary to win, even at the cost of your own morality. To fight a monster, you must become the monster."
He started smiling wider, a predatory glint in his eyes. "In a game of cards, you already lost, because you just showed me your trump card."
Everyone, including Mainu, was confused. The Dragon's laughter, initially booming, faltered. "HAHAHAHAHHAA! You truly have lost your mind, human! I don't know what a 'trump card' means! No matter what you have hidden in your sleeves, in the face of true chaos, nothing is above it! I am Chaos itself!"
Richard's smile remained. "Yeah, but you're still made of flesh."
Then suddenly, Mainu detected a missile coming towards it. A single, small projectile, moving slowly, almost casually. He was utterly confused. He just waited for it to hit him, preparing to absorb or deflect it. It wasn't made of psionic energy or anything that hinted at a high energy density that would be capable enough to least damage its scales. It seemed harmless.
The missile hit Mainu's chest. Not with an explosion, but with a soft hiss. Green gaseous particles erupted from it, engulfing the Dragon's chest in a cloud of emerald smoke. Mainu waved off the clouds of green smoke with a massive claw said, utterly confused. "Is this supposed to do anything? A pathetic gas attack?"
Richard, his smile widening, said, "It'll take time. And I watched a lot of sci-fi movies."
Then suddenly, 0.1 AU's away, behind the TRC and UEDCC fleets, a cloud of dark particles, almost invisible against the blackness of space, came towards them. They moved like a hungry locust swarm, avoiding each human ship with uncanny precision.
Richard's voice, now filled with a chilling triumph, boomed across the comms. "Do you know what's the enemy of all biological life? Let me introduce you to my latest prototype: the self-replicating Nanite Swarm."
In the flagships, the nanite swarm passed by them, avoiding each human ship, a dark, tide going straight towards Mainu. Mainu, still confused, didn't even move. It just materialized a psionic shield, its golden barrier shimmering into existence. But the swarms passed through it. Each nanite, consisting only of particle-sized, zero-point micro-generators (ZPMG) that drew energy from quantum vacuum fluctuations—the so-called zero-point energy—the lowest possible energy state of a quantum system, even at absolute zero. In theory, even empty space is not truly empty—it's teeming with particles and energy. A ZPMG harnesses this background energy on a microscopic scale. Since each nanite only had small energy signatures on a quantum level, they could pass through Mainu's shield like dust in space, utterly undetectable by its psionic defenses.
Mainu still waited to see what it would do. Then, he saw the edge of his tail. The dark purple scales, the newly armor, began to reatomize into dust. Not just the scales, but the underlying tissue. This panicked him. "What?! What is this?!" he shouted.
Richard saw his opportunity. His glowing marks flared. He then commanded, "Lina! Overclock the fusion drive! Channel all remaining energy to containment field!"
Lina's voice, now filled with a desperate hope, responded. "Yes, sir! Overclocking fusion drive! Energy reserves at critical! Containment fields pushing ninety-eight percent!"
The Prometheus X-19's chest began to spin, the central core glowing with an intense, blinding blue light. It was aiming directly at Mainu, who was too distracted trying to wave off the nanite swarm, like a creature plagued by invisible lice. Mainu was also too unaware of the bioweapon that had already started working inside him, meticulously reconstructing his DNA genetic code, twisting it, corrupting it. It would be a matter of time before the reaper would consume him from the inside. While the nanite swarm distracted him like lice, his fate was already sealed.
Then, Richard unleashed the Aetheric Storm. A beam of pure, raw psionic energy, drawn directly from his transcendent reserves, erupted from the Prometheus's chest. The mecha's overclocking fusion reactor powered the containment field in the weapon, reshaping the beam into a corkscrew-like pattern, a drill of pure energy.
The beam hit Mainu with destructive force. The Dragon only saw the beam too late, its attention divided. It roared in agony, its dark purple scales cracking further, melting under the concentrated psionic assault. It clenched its jaw, a guttural curse escaping its throat. This fucking insects! What is this dust of motes kept coming at me?! What sort of weapon that's eating my tail and why do I feel weaker all of a sudden?! Its mind raced, trying to comprehend the impossible. While blocking Richard's beam head-on, he realized the that the chaos energy didn't disrupt the beam. He cursed again. Shit! This is pure energy! My chaos energy could only handle so much of this! Pure energy is an exact opposite of chaos energy! It might disrupt and consume most of psionic variances, but pure psionic energy is a different thing! I need to run away!
Mainu then suddenly sped away from the swarm, a desperate, panicked flight.
Richard, seeing Mainu run away, asked Lina, "Lina, where's he gone to?"
Lina responded, her voice strained but triumphant. "He is heading back for Saturn, sir! I think he is trying to consume more energy to help heal the nanite swarms' tissue damage, sir!"
Richard scoffed, a grim satisfaction in his voice. "Like hell he can escape that. Even if one nanite swarm stuck to his scales, it will keep replicating itself, and start to consume him again. Though his regeneration is way faster, it is enough for the bioweapon to destroy his genetic code. Minutes, maybe hours, he will first suffer…" Richard's voice trailed off, a chilling list forming in his mind of the biological breakdown Mainu was about to endure:
Massive cellular apoptosis: Uncontrolled cell death due to unrepairable damage, his very cells committing suicide.
Oxidative stress spike: Free radicals flooding the dragon's bloodstream, corroding him from within.
Mitochondrial meltdown: Energy production in cells crashing; his mighty wings would falter, muscles seize, his power fading.
Foreign protein synthesis: New, alien proteins beginning to assemble from corrupted mRNA, twisting his very essence.
Heat emissions: The rewriting process giving off intense internal heat, possibly causing thermal distortions or surface cracking as his body fought itself.
Structural mutation: Limbs or organs beginning to alter shape—bones softening, cartilage reforming, tissue stiffening or liquefying in unnatural ways, a grotesque transformation.
"Then later, it would continue to decay, like a creature returning to dust, its power dissolving into nothingness. The Ancient Chaos Dragon, the devourer of worlds, was being eaten alive. The Future is now, Old man"
