Chapter 196: The Bloodwolf’s Duel
Deeper within the subterranean labyrinth beneath St. Petersburg, the rhythmic thud of Spartan boots echoed through the damp, cold air. The thirty Spartans, a mix of Hoplites and Stratos Infantry, moved with relentless purpose, their internal lights cutting through the oppressive gloom. Behind them, Major Anya Petrova, her UEDC unit a silent, watchful presence, followed closely, their own flashlights struggling to pierce the darkness the Spartans effortlessly illuminated.
Suddenly, the lead Spartan raised a gauntleted fist. They had arrived. The tunnel, long and rough-hewn, opened into a vast, echoing cavern. At its far end, a massive, crudely reinforced alien door, a patchwork of dark, unknown metals, blocked their path. Guarding it were three exceptionally large and tall Krills, easily dwarfing the regular Krill encountered so far. These were not the disorganized remnants they had been purging; these were elite guardians, their posture radiating a grim, unwavering resolve.
The middle Krill was the tallest, an imposing figure at approximately 15 feet tall, its scales a darker, almost obsidian hue. It was clad in what appeared to be a form of noble, dark armor, intricately scaled and adorned with what looked like ritualistic carvings. It wielded a massive, two-handed greatsword, its edge shimmering with a contained energy that pulsed faintly.
The colossal Krill slowly approached the Spartan lines, its greatsword pointed directly at them, a clear, deliberate gesture of challenge.
"By God..." a UEDC soldier whispered over the comms, his voice tight with a mixture of awe and fear. "That one’s enormous. And that armor... this isn’t just a grunt." The two flanking Krills, though smaller than their leader, still formidable at around 12 feet, moved into flanking positions, their own blades at the ready, their reptilian eyes fixed on the approaching humans. The heavy silence in the cavern was broken only by the hum of Spartan armor and the Krill’s slow, deliberate footsteps.
Just as the tension peaked, a new figure emerged from behind the Spartan lines. Davi Silva, a commanding officer of the 2nd Spartan Battalion, strode forward. His Hoplite armor was identical to the others, but his presence radiated a different kind of intensity, a coiled energy that seemed to hum beneath his yellow and black plating. He stopped, his visor reflecting the challenging Krill. A faint, almost imperceptible smile played across his lips, hidden behind the visor.
He turned to a Stratos Spartan nearby and, with a casual gesture, took a disposable mass driver. "An honorable duel, is it? Reminds me of the old days," Davi’s voice, calm, almost jovial, resonated over the comms, a stark contrast to the grim silence. In the simulation, a similar scene had occurred where a Krill asked for an honorable duel. Davi aimed the mass driver at the challenging 15-foot Krill and fired.
A sounding whhhzzztt filled the tunnel as the slug, a hyper-dense projectile designed to punch through reinforced plating, flew towards the massive alien. Suddenly, the slug stopped. It floated, inches from the Krill’s outstretched, clawed hand, struggling against an invisible force. The Krill’s scales around its hand rippled with a faint, dark energy, and its multi-faceted eyes glowed with a cold, focused intensity.
Back at the UEDC Command Base, monitoring via camera, a voice screamed in horror. "What?! It stopped it! They have supernatural abilities! My God, they have psychic power!" The UEDC soldiers on the ground, watching the live feed from Major Petrova’s helmet cam, were surprised and horrified. Their faces, pale behind their visors, reflected the terrifying, unprecedented revelation. The Krill’s ability to halt a mass driver slug with sheer mental force was a game-changer, a new, terrifying dimension to the enemy.
Davi Silva, however, remained unfazed. He retracted a thin plasma vibro-blade from under his wrist, but then, with a shrug that sent a subtle clang through his armor, dropped it to the ground.
"This one’s worthy. He’s strong," Davi’s voice, a satisfied grin audible in his tone, echoed over the comms. He adjusted his shield, a subtle hum emanating from his shield’s integrated reverse inertial dampeners, a technology designed to subtly slow incoming kinetic impacts.
The 15-foot Krill, cracked its neck, a guttural, almost reptilian sound, and charged. Its massive greatsword flashed with incredible speed for such a colossal weapon, a blur of shimmering energy. Davi easily dodged the initial attacks, his smaller frame moving with impossible agility. The Krill’s slashes, though fast, seemed to slow as they approach Davi, caught by the "reverse inertial dampeners that spread outwards," a subtle energy field emanating from his shield. He confirmed the Krill was indeed an "elite warrior" – its natural speed was truly exceptional, even for its size.
One of Krill attacks embedded its greatsword deep into the ground, momentarily stuck. Davi, seeing the opening, smiled coldly behind his visor and delivered a brutal uppercut punch, connecting with the Krill’s jaw with a sickening thud that reverberated through the cavern. The krill stumbled back, wiping green blood from its mouth, its glowing eyes narrowed in surprise.
"You’re strong, human. I give you that. What’s your name?" The krill’s voice was a guttural growl, surprisingly in English, a chilling testament to its psionic abilities or advanced learning.
"My name is Davi Silva, citizen of Earth, a soldier of Terran Retribution Command," Davi replied, his voice clear and proud. He pointed to his thin saber plasma vibro-blade on the ground, then dropped it, letting it clatter. He shifted his stance to gauntlet fighting, his armored fists clenching. He wasn’t really good with blades or swords; brawl and close combat was what he excelled at, his true art.
"What a brave human. An honorable one," The krill rumbled, a strange glint in its eye. The Krill also dropped its greatsword, letting it clatter to the ground, and switched to a similar fist-fighting stance, its massive, clawed hands clenching. "My name is Krill Sonja. I am a son of the Duke Kul Sonja, Harvest Leader of Russia."
Davi doesn’t say anything, but a primal excitement surged through him. He lunges at the 15-foot tall Krill.
The fistfight started, a brutal, dance between the two. Throughout the exchange, Davi was seemingly helpless at times, the massive Krill easily grabbing his leg and slamming him against the tunnel wall with bone-jarring force. But Davi was different; he "liked being hit," a strange, almost masochistic joy in the impact. He immediately counterattacked, targeting the Krill’s legs, which forced the massive alien to lower its head, allowing Davi to land a brutal uppercut. Both of them, in a weird way, were "enjoying it," a primal warrior’s delight in the raw exchange of blows, a mutual respect forged in violence.
On the onlookers, the Spartans from other battalions and the UEDC soldiers grew increasingly worried as Davi took hit after hit, his armor dented, the ground around him beginning to be soaked with his own blood. The two Krills standing by the door, however, cheered and seemed to enjoy the raw brawl, a sign of their own warrior culture, recognizing the honor in the brutal exchange.
For the Spartans of the 2nd Battalion, they knew Davi, their commander. He would do this "many times, challenging in raw fist fight with strong opponents, ten thousand times over" in the simulations. But even they are concerned; Davi is getting hit and downed too many times.
Blood, Davi’s own blood, began to soak the ground around him, a dark stain on the pristine armor. With each hit, a strange, almost manic excitement flared in Davi. For the Krill, it’s "crazy"; the human keeps getting up and seems to "like it the more he got injured." As Krill Sonja watches Davi, "washed himself in his own blood," the squad from the 2nd Battalion exchanged knowing glances.
"Yeah. It’s done. As soon as he washed himself with blood, the battle’s done," a 2nd Battalion Spartan muttered over comms, a grim satisfaction in his voice. The other Spartans from other battalions are confused; they never saw how the 2nd Battalion operated. They were always tasked with "special operations" in the simulation because they "always seem to get it done."
Then, on Davi’s back, the wolf tattoo, which he had engraved on his chest just before deployment, flared a vibrant, angry red, pulsing with an inner light that seemed to draw power from the very blood soaking his armor.
He lunges again. This time, he is faster, stronger, a blur of yellow and black armor. The Krill feels the force that hits its leg, a sickening crack echoing in the tunnel. It thought its bone just broke. As Krill Sonja watches the human going berserk, it staggered and knelt, its massive frame trembling, its psionic power momentarily overwhelmed by the sheer, raw ferocity. At that moment, Davi’s punch, imbued with the raw, unleashed power of his berserk state, connected with the Krill’s jaw, a final, thunderous impact that downed the Krill.
"You win, human," Krill Sonja’s voice faded as it went unconscious, its massive body thudding to the ground.
The tunnel was silent once more, save for Davi’s heavy, ragged breathing. The Spartans from other battalions and the UEDC soldiers were in "awe" at Davi’s display of raw power. The UEDC Command Base, watching from their cameras, was equally stunned, their analysts frantically trying to decipher the energy readings from Davi’s armor.
But Davi doesn’t stop there. Still in his berserk state, a primal roar escaping his vox-caster, he lunges at the two remaining Krills standing by the door. It’s a 2 vs. 1 fight, but Davi, a whirlwind of yellow and black, quickly overwhelms them. Their energy shields were useless against his berserk fury, their blades too slow. They fell, one with a broken neck, the other with its chest caved in.
He then calms down, his heavy breathing echoing in the tunnel, slowly returning to normal. The wolf tattoo on his back (chest) fades, returning to its normal, unlit state. He smiles, a beat-up, blood-soaked grin, a warrior satisfied.
The legend of Davi "Bloodwolf" Silva was born in that dark cavern. His reputation, already known within the 2nd Battalion for his unique, brutal fighting style, now spread like wildfire to the entire Praetoriani Siderum and the UEDC forces.
"So that’s how the 2nd Battalion ’gets it done’," a Spartan from another battalion muttered to Isabela, his voice filled with awe. "He just... lets them hit him until he goes berserk."
Isabela Silva, wiping a smudge of alien blood from her visor, gave a grim nod. "He’s a force of nature. And he just opened the way." The large door at the end of the tunnel, now unguarded, stood ready for the Spartans to proceed, their path cleared by Davi’s brutal, personal victory. The subterranean hunt continued, now with a new legend leading the charge.
