Chapter 218 - 218: The Dragon’s Fury
"We faced a god today. And we made it bleed."
At the very edge of the Oort Cloud, the solar system's icy frontier, a colossal assembly of human might hung in the void. Fleet Admiral Yamada's dreadnaught Vigilant was now the centerpiece of an armada. Reinforcements had warped in, hundreds of ships and capital ships, Carriers flanked by battleships, heavy cruisers, and swarms of fighter squadrons. They formed a vast, layered defense, a wall against the encroaching darkness. Each ship held its precise position, their energy signatures humming with readiness. They were positioned 0.3-0.5 AU from the golden dragon, a distance carefully calculated for maximum tactical advantage, allowing for full weapon spread and evasive maneuvers.
On the Vigilant's bridge, Admiral Yamada stood, his face grim, his gaze fixed on the colossal golden form of the Dragon. He felt the weight of every human life in the solar system, every hope for a future free from ancient threats. His comms officer, Lieutenant Commander Kelly Cheston, monitored every frequency, every sensor reading.
A moment of silence stretched, thick with tension. The only sound was the low thrum of the Vigilant's engines and the soft clicks of console readouts. Then, throughout every human ship, the deep, resonant voice of Mainu, the Chaos Dragon, filled their comms. It was slightly static, ancient, and unnervingly calm, a voice that seemed to bypass speakers and resonate directly within the listener's mind.
The voice rumbled, seemingly from the Dragon itself, though no mouth moved. "I do not seek violence. I only want peace and harmony amongst your race. I fully bring myself unto you hoping you would accept my humble offer. My former kin, the Krill, have betrayed me. They sought to use my very essence for their own dark rituals. I merely wish to return to my ancestral home, this solar system, and offer my power to you, the true inheritors of this world. My presence will be your shield, my wisdom will be your guide, my strength your ultimate protector against any cosmic threat." Mainu's voice was smooth, persuasive, laced with an ancient charm designed to lull lesser species into submission. It believed these "primitives" would fall for its grand pronouncements, eager for the patronage of a seemingly benevolent cosmic power.
Yamada listened, his expression hardening. The data from Mars Command, from the ancient elders, had been clear. He leaned back into the comm, his voice now laced with cold steel, cutting through Mainu's deceptive charm. "Your deceptions don't work on us, Chaos Dragon. We've learned your true intentions. We know of Terralia, our planet's true guardian, and how you consumed her. You will pay for the sins against our planet's guardian, and the crimes against the planet Mars, which you left a barren husk. We know your intentions. You will not touch Earth."
Mainu paused. A flicker of genuine, raw surprise crossed its vast, golden eyes. Its ancient mind, accustomed to unchallenged authority and easily manipulated lesser beings, struggled to comprehend. They know? How? These primitives… they have knowledge of events from millennia past? Impossible! Then, the surprise twisted into something else. A low chuckle began, deep in its chest, vibrating through the comms, a sound of pure, unadulterated evil. It grew, slowly, steadily, until it became a booming, evil laugh that echoed across the void, chilling every human soul that heard it, a sound of cosmic contempt and unbridled arrogance.
"HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" Mainu's laughter reverberated, shaking the very comms frequencies. "It feels a burden off my shoulders, that I have to pretend someone I disgust! You insects, like all the insects I've burned before, will always end up in the same way! I've met this exact scenario a thousand times, no, a hundred thousand times before! All the races that think they're brave enough to take me on, have died. You all—will join them in the void!"
Before Mainu could finish its taunt, before its laughter fully died, a blinding streak of light, too fast for the eye to follow, shot from the human lines. It was a single, massive projectile that fired FTL kinetic slugs from one of the ship's integrated warp cannon. The energy signature of the shot was immense, focusing the power of a small star into a hyper-dense, hyper-velocity slug. It screamed through the vacuum, a silent, deadly spear.
The projectile slammed into Mainu's shoulder. The Dragon roared, "ARRRRGHHH!!" a sound of pure shock and incandescent pain that ripped through the comms, rattling teeth in human skulls. Something pierced it. Not deeply, not fatally, but something did. A small, golden shower of scales erupted from the impact point, glittering like dust motes in the harsh light of the distant sun.
Mainu glanced at its shoulder, a gaping, shallow wound smoking faintly, a trickle of golden ichor beginning to seep from the edges. Impossible! An insect's weapon capable of hurting me? What kind of weapon do they use? Who are they? This defies all known physics! Its ancient mind, used to effortless dominance, reeled, its arrogance momentarily shattered by the unexpected pain.
Then, a single ship's comms cut through the Dragon's roar, a calm, authoritative voice. "This is Captain Karl Johansen of the USS Odin. Are you done speaking, big boy? Because we're just getting started." The Odin, a UEDCC battleship, held its position, its forward batteries already cycling for another shot, a defiant beacon in the vast armada. Its targeting lasers painted Mainu's wounded shoulder.
Mainu, enraged, snapped its head towards the Odin, its golden eyes burning with a newfound, terrifying fury. "You bastards! How dare you—!" As it was about to spit out something, a torrent of psionic energy or a destructive beam, Admiral Yamada's voice boomed across the fleet, cutting off the Dragon's threat.
"Fire! All units! Full spread! Pepper that goddamn lizard! Focus fire on the wound!"
Thousands of energy beams, kinetic slugs, and torpedoes surged from the human fleet. The void lit up with a furious, multi-colored storm, a wall of pure destruction hurtling towards the Dragon. But before the barrage could connect, Mainu materialized a psionic shield. It shimmered, a translucent golden barrier that pulsed with raw power, distorting the light around it. All warp cannon projectiles, all missiles, all energy blasts, hit the shield and dissipated, absorbed, or deflected harmlessly. Not a single shot pierced through. The immense energy of the human armada simply washed over it, like water against a mountain.
Yamada, witnessing this impossible phenomenon, cursed under his breath. "Impossible! Its shields are absorbing everything! Even concentrated warp cannon fire!" He barked new orders, his voice tight with desperation. "Surround it on all sides! Sector Gamma, flank left! Sector Delta, right! Trap it! Don't let it escape our firing arcs!"
But before a single ship could complete its maneuver, before their engines could even fully reorient, Mainu moved. It vanished from its position, reappearing hundreds of kilometers away in an instant, a golden flash. It zigged and zagged, moving at impossible speeds, a golden blur against the stars, making a mockery of their encirclement. Its movements were not like a ship's, bound by inertia and thrusters, but like a living, thinking being, anticipating their every move, phasing through space as if it were water.
Then, Mainu opened its mouth. A beam, colossal and blinding, erupted. It was pure, concentrated energy, a torrent of cosmic fire, hotter than a star's core. It lanced across the void, hitting the UEDCC Cruiser Valiant. The Valiant's shields flared, overloaded instantly, the ship's internal lights flickering wildly. Then the hull itself began to glow, melting from the inside out. It barely took a second before its structure buckled, twisting, and then detonated in a silent, expanding fireball, leaving only an expanding cloud of debris.
"Scatter! Scatter! Scatter now!" Admiral Yamada roared, his voice hoarse with desperation, his face pale as he watched his fleet being torn apart. "Break formation! Evasive maneuvers! Prioritize survival! Get out of its line of sight!"
Ships tried to steer, their engines screaming, but Mainu was faster. It picked off ships with terrifying ease, a predator in a field of prey. It bit down on the TRC Destroyer Ironclad, its massive jaws crushing the hull like paper, tearing through armored plating. It slashed the UEDCC Frigate Tempest with a claw, slicing it in half, spilling its contents into the vacuum. It banged its tail against the TRC Carrier Dauntless, sending it tumbling wildly, its internal gravity failing, crew members thrown against bulkheads. Then, with a telekinetic squeeze, it crushed the UEDCC Battleship Leviathan, twisting its hull into a crumpled ball of metal, sparks and explosions rippling across its dying form. Any ship that fired its weapons, the shield around Mainu intercepted it, rendering their attacks useless, a golden barrier mocking their efforts.
Mainu laughed, a chilling, triumphant sound that seemed to relish the destruction, its golden eyes gleaming with malicious glee. It fired off more beams from its mouth, picking off fleeing ships with casual precision. "HAHAHAHAHA! Is this all you got? I admit, you got more firepower than all the other insects I faced off! THIS IS FUN! A delightful challenge before I claim my prize!"
All the other captains feared. The scene they just watched, as their fellow captains and friends were easily getting picked off, was a nightmare made real. Despair began to set in, a cold, creeping sensation that threatened to overwhelm their resolve.
On the bridge of the USS Rising Sun, a UEDCC battlecruiser, Captain Kenji Nagamoto watched the carnage. His face was grim, but his eyes held no fear. Only a cold, burning resolve. He had seen enough. This was not a battle they could win with conventional tactics. This required a different kind of sacrifice.
"They are dying for nothing," Nagamoto murmured, his voice calm, almost serene, a stark contrast to the chaos outside. He turned to his crew, his Japanese accent clear, his gaze sweeping over each face. "Listen to me, my friends. We are witnessing the end of an era. But humanity does not fall without a fight. We will show this creature what true resolve means. We will show it honor. We will show it sacrifice. Our sacrifice will not be in vain."
His crew, hardened veterans, looked at him. They saw the truth in his eyes, the unwavering conviction. A grim understanding settled over them. They nodded, their faces resolute, ready to follow him into the abyss.
"For humanity!" a young ensign shouted, his voice cracking but firm.
"For Earth!" another echoed, gripping his console.
Nagamoto smiled, a warrior's smile, tinged with a profound sadness. "Good. Helmsman, engage stealth mode. Full power to engines. Plot a direct collision course with the Dragon's shoulder, target the impact point precisely."
The Rising Sun cloaked, its energy signature vanishing from enemy sensors, its hull absorbing stray light. It surged forward, a silent torpedo aimed at the golden monster. The Dragon, busy picking off fighter squadrons and reveling in its destructive spree, didn't notice the ship, its senses overwhelmed by the chaos it created.
Nagamoto hoped the shield would break after ramming it. He braced for impact, his hands tight on his command chair. But it didn't. They went through. The Rising Sun passed through Mainu's psionic shield as if it wasn't there. All other projectiles, missiles, and explosions from the battle had been stopped by the shield, but this massive, cloaked ship, moving at normal speeds, simply phased through it. It was a momentary, impossible loophole, a flaw in the Dragon's ancient defense.
An opportunity. A desperate, suicidal opportunity.
Nagamoto's eyes widened. "It's a phase shield! Strong against energy and extreme velocity, weak against mass at slow velocity!" He roared, his voice filled with a sudden, fierce elation. "Overload the core! Thirty seconds on the clock! Maximum energy output! Channel it all to the forward hull!"
The ship's internal alarms blared. Red lights flashed. "Core overload initiated! Thirty seconds to detonation! Warning: Catastrophic structural failure imminent!"
Nagamoto made a final speech, his voice broadcast through the ship's internal comms, clear and strong, reaching every corner of the Rising Sun. "My crew, my family, it has been the greatest honor serving alongside you. And it is the greatest honor to serve humanity in its direst times. We are the shield. We are the sword. We are the Rising Sun! May our light guide the path to victory!"
The energy rising within the ship became a blinding blue light, visible even through the cloaking field. Mainu, now distracted by the sudden, massive energy spike directly behind him, detected something. It turned, its golden eyes widening in surprise, a flicker of alarm in their depths. But it was too late.
The USS Rising Sun's fusion reactor overloaded. A massive blue explosion erupted, not outward, but contained. The blast was channeled, focused, amplified by the Dragon's own psionic shield, which, instead of deflecting it, absorbed and intensified the raw energy within its field. The shield flickered violently, struggling to contain the impossible force, then collapsed in a blinding flash.
Yamada, watching from the Vigilant, saw the shield dissipate with the smoke. A gasp went through his bridge. "The shield! It's down! We must not waste this opportunity that it has been given to us!" He roared, his voice raw but triumphant, "All remaining ships! Fire! Full barrage! Hit it now! Concentrate fire!"
One hundred thirty-five battleships, heavy cruisers, and battlecruisers, their weapons already charged, unleashed everything they had. A second storm of fire, even more concentrated than the first, engulfed the Dragon.
