14: Find a class to attend
Having completed all the necessary operations, He Ming leaned back comfortably in his office chair. Recently, he hadn't rested well because he was busy coding the super AI program that would assist him in his work.
Just as he was about to close his eyes and get some much-needed rest, the phone in his pocket vibrated repeatedly and inappropriately.
He took it out and saw it was an unfamiliar number.
"Hello?"
"He Ming, you finally answered the phone."
A saccharine and choked female voice came from the other end of the line.
He Ming felt goosebumps rise all over his body. Although the voice felt strange, a scene from his memory automatically surfaced.
It was Group Leader.
"Before... I didn't reply to your messages because something major happened in my family. My mother, she..."
At this point, Group Leader sounded as if she was overcome with grief and began to sob softly.
He Ming furrowed his brows tightly.
He had to admit that Group Leader's acting was realistic; her voice was delicate and full of 'green tea' flavor.
"My mother is very ill, and I had to go back to my hometown to take care of her. The signal there was bad, and I was completely panicked. I really didn't ignore you on purpose."
He Ming remained silent, quietly listening to Group Leader perform her monologue.
His fingers tapped sporadically on the desktop.
Seeing that He Ming wasn't reacting, Group Leader intensified her tearful tone and cut to the chase.
"He Ming, I know you're the best to me. I'm really struggling right now... My mother's medical bills are like a bottomless pit. All my money has been poured into it, and I've accumulated a lot of debt. I really had no other choice but to come to you..."
Group Leader's words were interrupted by He Ming.
"Oh, is that so?"
"That sounds quite sad."
"I actually have a serious suggestion," He Ming said, a hint of mockery in his voice.
"Why don't you go find a job? I think the Cainiao Post Station would suit you quite well."
Group Leader: "...?"
She didn't react immediately; her brain processed this completely unexpected answer for a few seconds.
Get a job?
The Cainiao Post Station?
This was completely different from the script she had planned!
"He Ming, what do you mean?"
"The literal meaning."
"Because you'll be dealing with large and small packages every day. It'll be fulfilling."
"Plus, some packages won't have codes, so you'll have to put in extra effort."
Group Leader vaguely felt that something was wrong with his words, but she couldn't pinpoint it, until He Ming slowly added the second half of his sentence.
"Oh, right. Look at the character 'eight' ( eight). Doesn't it particularly match your current demeanor?"
"He Ming, you're insulting me, aren't you?"
On the other end of the phone, Group Leader was squatting on the sofa in a sheer, transparent nightgown, her brows tightly furrowed, wearing an expression as if she had seen a ghost.
"Insulting you?"
"How can you jump to conclusions like that?"
"If you keep this up, I could sue you for slander."
"Then what does this 'eight' ( eight) mean?"
Group Leader thought He Ming was definitely calling her a busybody, and she stopped pretending to be pitiful.
"I'm concerned about you."
"I'm asking you to count the strokes in the character 'eight' ( eight) to distract yourself and stop dwelling on sad things."
Group Leader almost subconsciously thought... one left-falling stroke, one right-falling stroke.
"Two strokes."
Two strokes. 'Er Bi' ( Second stroke)? Group Leader murmured the words, then suddenly realized!
The homophone was... "He Ming, you bastard! Are you calling me an idiot (Er Bi)?"
Group Leader's roar completely tore away her facade.
He Ming snorted coldly, hung up the phone, and blocked the number.
After being hung up on and blocked by He Ming, Group Leader was trembling with rage, her chest heaving violently.
"Ahhh, I'm so angry!"
"He Ming, what do you think you are!"
Group Leader screamed, grabbed a nearby cushion, and violently threw it against the wall.
After venting, endless feelings of grievance and fury surged within her.
She desperately needed someone to talk to, and even more, someone to share her indignation with.
She picked up her phone, opened the chat box labeled [Bestie], and rapidly typed, the emotional text practically spilling off the screen.
[Lili, I'm seriously furious, I'm going to explode!]
[That He Ming, who used to follow me around like a dog, actually dared to block me!]
[I called him back using a new number and he mocked me! He actually called me an idiot (Er Bi)!]
Group Leader sent a long string of voice messages like a machine gun.
She recounted how He Ming had suggested she work at the Cainiao Post Station and how he had used the character 'eight' to insult her intelligence.
After sending them, she eagerly awaited her best friend Lili to immediately join her in cursing He Ming and sharing her outrage.
The phone quickly vibrated.
Lili's reply had arrived.
[Yanyan, calm down. But honestly, your luck hasn't been great lately...]
[Why don't you actually listen to him and find a job? At least stabilize yourself first.]
Group Leader stared at the screen, speechless and choked up instantly, nearly spitting out a mouthful of blood.
"Find a job?"
Group Leader repeated the phrase in disbelief.
[Even you are saying that? Lili, whose side are you on?]
Group Leader was about to type a rebuttal when another message from Lili followed immediately.
[Oh, right, speaking of jobs, I just successfully interviewed at a new company. It seems quite powerful. It's called Xinghai Biotechnology.]
[Although it's a new company, its registered capital alone is two billion! They are hiring now. Why don't you come and take a look?]
Lili sent Group Leader a recruitment advertisement.
[The position is pharmaceutical sales, with a base salary of 5,000 plus commission. If you do well, the income should be pretty good.]
"Two billion?"
These three words seemed to possess magic, instantly capturing Group Leader's full attention.
Her mind quickly became active, like a wild horse running loose.
How wealthy must the boss of a company with two billion in registered capital be?
What kind of people would she be able to meet working there?
If she could just... Group Leader instantly threw He Ming to the back of her mind, her fingers tapping rapidly, her tone becoming urgent.
[Two billion, is that true?]
[Lili, you're amazing! How did you get into a company like that?]
[I've only done property sales. Pharmaceutical sales sound like a completely different thing.]
[Oh, right, right! A big company like that definitely needs a receptionist, right?]
[Someone with good looks and great temperament. I think that position suits me better.]
[Do you have any inside scoop? Help me ask about it!]
Do sales and have to cater to people's moods? No way am I doing that.
A receptionist is much better—glamorous and bright. Just standing there makes her the face of the company.
Most importantly, receptionists are the most likely to interact with the company's high-level executives, or even that mysterious billionaire boss.
However, Lili's reply quickly shattered Group Leader's fantasy... [Receptionist? Don't even think about it, girl.]
[Our company's salary and benefits are based on the standards of a Fortune 500 company. The receptionist who started yesterday is incredibly beautiful, completely out of our league.]
[Right now, only sales, marketing, and a few technical positions are still hiring. If you want to come, I can forward you the HR's WeChat contact. Want to try sales?]
Group Leader pouted disappointedly, looking at the words "already taken."
But the allure of two billion was simply too tempting.
Sales—although it sounded a bit difficult—what if she could use it to access the core circle?
[Fine, fine, sales it is. Hurry and send me the HR's WeChat contact.]
[Thank you, my dear Lili. Once I start working, you'll have to take good care of me!]
Putting down her phone, Group Leader's mood had shifted from overcast to partly cloudy.
She looked at the prosperity of the Magic City outside the window, as if seeing an even larger gold mine waving at her.
As for He Ming, he had temporarily been swept into the garbage heap of her memory.
