34: Chapter 34 Almost Died

Life is like the waves on the sea, sometimes rising and sometimes falling.

A person cannot always have bad luck, and naturally, one cannot enjoy good luck forever.

Even Zheng Jing, who possessed a system cheat, could not escape this common rule.

This abandoned gold mining area was astonishingly large; it was not one of those narrow and deep underground mine shafts.

In the early years of mining, most operations were open-pit. The entire mountain range had been extensively excavated. Looking out, one could see continuous desolate slopes and rocky beaches, encompassing several mountain peaks.

In such a vast area, which was an old mining site abandoned for many years, the spots that could yield gold or silver were naturally very scattered.

Zheng Jing searched the mountains for a full four hours, but he didn't find a single new thing.

Whether it was the Radar System in his mind or the metal detector in his hand, they remained completely quiet throughout, not making a single sound.

If it were anyone else running around for so long in vain, they probably would have become restless and impatient, but Zheng Jing's mindset was exceptionally calm and steady.

Nothing else, just that with provisions in hand, one doesn't panic!

After all, he had already dug up six or seven grams of small gold nuggets plus over a gram of gold dust early in the morning. His harvest far exceeded that of an ordinary person, and he was already very satisfied in his heart.

Holding the belief that the opportunities belonging to him would come sooner or later, and that there was no point in forcing what didn't belong to him, Zheng Jing simply let go of the intention to specifically search for goods and strolled leisurely along the mountain path.

Besides, this didn't hinder his actual work, and it also allowed him to relax his mind instead of being constantly tense.

In the Northern Fujian region, there are nine mountains, half a river, and half a field; everywhere is deep, dense forest.

As he walked, Zheng Jing encountered another small grove similar to the one where he had rested yesterday at noon.

The shade was thick, the breeze was gentle, and it felt exceptionally cool and comfortable.

It was noon, and the sun was becoming increasingly scorching.

Although he hadn't done much digging all morning, the rushing about had consumed a lot of energy, and Zheng Jing's stomach was already growling.

Coupled with the fact that he hadn't slept well last night, he was now hungry, sleepy, and tired...

Zheng Jing decided immediately to take a break there.

He chose a relatively flat spot against a large tree to sit down and took his lunch out of his backpack.

As usual, Zheng Jing never treated himself poorly when it came to food.

A portion of fish-flavored shredded pork self-heating rice, paired with a bottle of nutritious pure milk, made Zheng Jing eat until his mouth was oily.

After eating and drinking his fill, he naturally had to take a good rest to ease the exhaustion throughout his body.

The mountain breeze blew gently, and a heavy wave of sleepiness instantly swept over him.

Before long, Zheng Jing fell into a deep sleep.

In his dream, a sharp, urgent sound echoed in his ears, constantly urging him to leave quickly.

A strong sense of crisis suddenly surged into his heart, and Zheng Jing woke up from his dream with a start.

Upon waking, Zheng Jing felt as if something was watching him. He looked up and saw, in the grass two meters away, a thick King Cobra with its head held high, flicking its slender tongue, staring fixedly at him.

A layer of cold sweat instantly broke out on Zheng Jing's back, and all the hair on his body stood on end.

Before Zheng Jing could react, he saw the King Cobra's body tense up, gathering strength, looking as if it were ready to pounce and attack at any moment.

"Holy crap!"

Zheng Jing couldn't help but exclaim, feeling a lingering fear in his heart.

This King Cobra was no joke; it had the title of "King of Venomous Snakes." If it bit him, he would be lying in a coffin right on the spot!

Based on the distance, he estimated that by three o'clock in the afternoon, he would be sent to the crematorium by Guo Kui and the others, and by four o'clock, he would be in a small box!

Zheng Jing was terrified; if it hadn't been for the voice in his dream reminding him, the consequences would have been unimaginable.

But now that he was awake... the tables had turned.

Zheng Jing became excited. Ordinary people might have already panicked if they encountered such a highly venomous snake.

But he wasn't afraid at all, because he had followed his father and cousin into the mountains to catch snakes for a treat since he was a child. He had long ago figured out the nature of various snakes and was very experienced in dealing with such venomous ones.

You can be as venomous as you want, but you are just a snake after all. How could you be a match for the great Master Zheng?

Although the King Cobra seemed to be a national second-class protected animal, it had almost cost him his life just moments ago, so Zheng Jing had no intention of letting it go.

Besides, as the old saying goes, if you see a snake and don't kill it, you are committing a sin!

Such a fierce and highly venomous snake left in the mountains would always be a problem.

After all, Guo Kui and the others were also going into the mountains for Gold Panning, and no one could say if they might happen to run into it later. Moreover, those few of them might not have his snake-catching skills; if they really bumped into it, something terrible might happen.

He might as well take action himself and eliminate this hidden danger!

Zheng Jing gripped the small digging shovel he carried with him, steadied his mind, and struck quickly, killing the highly venomous snake in just a few moves.

"Damn you, you provoked me first..."

Seeing that the King Cobra was dead beyond a doubt, Zheng Jing finally wiped the cold sweat from his forehead.

Knowing how to catch snakes and daring to catch them only meant he wasn't afraid of snakes; it didn't mean he wasn't afraid of their venom!

If someone hadn't shouted in his dream today, he probably would have met his end here.

He didn't know if it was some passing deity or his ancestors protecting him, but Zheng Jing decided that the next time he came, he would bring some incense, candles, and paper to pay his respects properly.
