60: Chapter 60 What? Gone?
Just as he turned the corner into the operating room hallway, Zheng Jing saw Guo Jianjun standing there, staring blankly.
"Brother Jun, Kuizi has already gone in. Why don't you lean back on the chair and rest for a while?"
Guo Jianjun shook his head: "If it were any other day, I would have been fast asleep by now, but today, I just can't fall asleep."
Zheng Jing comforted him: "Don't worry. This is the best orthopedic hospital in the entire province, and an orthopedic expert is performing the surgery on Kuizi personally. What could possibly go wrong?"
After saying this, Zheng Jing handed over a bag of steamed buns: "Here, eat it while it's hot. You haven't had a proper meal all day."
"You make a good point!"
Reaching out to take the buns and soy milk, Guo Jianjun realized he had been worrying too much. "You really know me, brother. These big buns look delicious."
The two sat down on the nearby plastic bench in the hallway, casually tearing open the paper bag, and the hot, meaty aroma immediately wafted out.
The two had been hungry for an entire night, their stomachs empty and aching. At this point, they couldn't care about their image, grabbing the buns and devouring them in big bites.
The bun skin was fluffy and soft, the meat filling solid and full. One bite filled their mouths with savory flavor. Even though it was hot enough to make them smack their lips, they couldn't bear to stop, wolfing down the food.
A bite of bun, a sip of hot soy milk—their empty stomachs were filled, and it was pure satisfaction.
Guo Jianjun chewed the bun and asked indistinctly: "That benefactor of Kuizi's, is he alright?"
"He's fine, just a normal fever. It's already starting to go down now," Zheng Jing replied while eating.
"That's good. A good person like that shouldn't have anything happen to him."
Zheng Jing swallowed the last bite of the bun and asked casually: "Have you notified Uncle Guo and Aunt Guo?"
"I called them right after you left earlier. My uncle and aunt immediately chartered a car and rushed over. They should be here in about three hours or so."
Zheng Jing nodded: "Alright."
After finishing this topic, the two didn't say anything more, and the hallway suddenly quieted down.
Before, they had been rushing back and forth for Guo Kui's injury, and combined with their worry, their nerves had been tightly strung, so they hadn't felt anything.
Now that Guo Kui was in surgery, and with an expert performing it, they both felt much more at ease.
Now that their stomachs were full, a heavy drowsiness immediately overcame them, their eyelids growing so heavy they could barely keep them open.
Leaning against the back of the chair, even though it was hard and uncomfortable, they both fell asleep after a short while.
They slept for over three hours in this nap.
Suddenly, a burst of hurried footsteps, mixed with suppressed sobbing, startled them awake.
Guo Jianjun and Zheng Jing rubbed their sore, heavy eyes and stood up, seeing Guo Kui's parents rushing over, out of breath.
"Uncle, Aunt."
"Uncle Guo, Aunt."
The two quickly stepped forward to greet them.
Guo Kui's mother was sobbing quietly, while his father was relatively calm, asking about the specific situation.
Guo Jianjun lowered his voice and briefly explained the process of how Guo Kui got injured,
and told them that the person performing the surgery on Guo Kui was the top orthopedic expert at the Second Hospital, so they didn't need to worry too much.
"Thank you, thank you, Little Jing, and Junzi."
Zheng Jing and Guo Jianjun quickly waved their hands. Guo Jianjun said: "Uncle, Aunt, I am Kuizi's brother, why are you thanking me?
If you want to thank someone, thank Zheng Jing. If it weren't for his friend stepping in, I'm afraid Kuizi wouldn't have been able to get the surgery today."
Before Guo Kui's parents could speak, Zheng Jing quickly said: "Although Kuizi and I aren't related by blood, we are like brothers..."
Even so, Guo Kui's parents still repeatedly said thanks to Zheng Jing, mentioning how much trouble it was and how hard he worked.
During the time the few of them were talking quietly in the hallway, the surgery in the operating room was just finished.
The doctor controlled the anesthesia dosage very accurately. As the effects slowly wore off, Guo Kui woke up a little in a daze, but his whole body was limp and weak, and the drowsiness was still very heavy.
The shadowless lamp overhead was blindingly bright; even with his eyes closed, it was painfully stinging. His brain was foggy, and without thinking much, he pulled the quilt,
covering his entire face tightly. After blocking out the bright light, he tilted his head and drifted back into a deep sleep, not moving at all.
Before long, the red light of the operating room went out, the doors slowly opened, and medical staff pushed the hospital bed out.
Guo Kui was covered tightly by a white quilt from head to toe, with only a tuft of messy hair exposed. He lay there quietly, without making a sound.
Guo Kui's mother caught sight of this at a glance, and her legs went weak on the spot. She burst into loud wails: "My son!"
Guo Kui's father's head exploded with a "buzz," his vision blacked out, and he felt as if the sky had collapsed. His hands and feet were shaking violently, and he was about to rush forward like a madman.
Zheng Jing and Guo Jianjun looked at each other, their faces full of shock.
Could it be?
It was just a fracture surgery, and an expert was the lead surgeon. Could they have actually killed him?
