100: Chapter 100 Desperate Firewall Defense
Lin Ye stood on a horizontal branch of an old tree.
He extended his right arm, and the Dark Weaver's Nano-wire hooked onto the edge of the Ice Waterfall.
Zhao Mengmeng crouched at the edge of the trench.
She gripped a flint tightly in her hand, half her face smeared with frozen mud and grease.
The forest line to the northeast collapsed.
Snow churned and rolled, and bushes snapped over in succession.
Countless Blood-colored Vines flattened every obstacle, surging out of the woodland like a Red Tide.
Veins bulged on the back of Zhao Mengmeng's hand as she gripped the flint: "This thing has no honor; when it can't win, it calls its whole family!"
Lin Ye lowered his gaze, locking onto the thin vines in the front row.
"Light it."
The flint struck heavily against the blade of the dagger.
Sparks flew, catching the tinder.
The grass rope sent up black smoke, and a ball of orange fire dove into the animal fat below.
The frozen white fat melted upon contact with the heat.
The oil flowed along the bottom of the trench, and tongues of fire raced along the oil path.
The dozen-meter-long curved shallow trench erupted into flames.
Heatwaves rolled back the wind and snow.
In front of the Water Pool, a wall of rolling fire rose from the ground.
The Blood-colored Vines in the front row were moving too fast and crashed headlong into the fire.
Piercing shrieks erupted from within the line of fire.
The barbs on the surface of the vines carbonized rapidly, their slender bodies twitching and curling in the fierce flames, dark red sap popping and crackling before turning to ash in the blink of an eye.
Zhao Mengmeng raised her crossbow and roared: "Burn! Burn it all to hell!"
Great Xia Live Stream.
[Satisfying! That's how you should burn them!]
[Once the fire wall went up, I got goosebumps!]
[Weren't the vines so arrogant just now? Keep charging!]
[Brother Eye's fire trench was crucial; the positioning was perfect!]
The fire raged fiercely.
The scalding grease continued to burn at the bottom of the trench, and thick smoke was blown by the wind toward the northeastern forest line.
The first wave of vines was forcibly burned back.
But the pushing from behind never stopped.
More Blood Vines surged out of the woodland, pushing against the charred remains of their kin, forcing themselves into the fire trench.
The charred segments slammed into the bottom of the trench, blocking the flow of the oil.
Hundreds and thousands of thick vines from behind rolled over the ashes and continued to press forward; as soon as the front layer was burned away, fresh vine flesh from behind immediately took its place.
A gap was forcibly breached on the left side of the fire line first.
A main vine as thick as a thigh rolled up a large amount of snowy mud and smashed into the trench.
The snowy mud met the fire and emitted a large cloud of white smoke.
That section of the flame was forcibly pressed down, and the fire dimmed.
Zhao Mengmeng shouted: "The left side is broken!"
Lin Ye raised his right arm slightly.
Three strands of Nano-wire shot out, precisely cutting into the base of the thick vine.
The engine retracted at high frequency.
The thick vine broke apart, dark red sap sprayed, and the fire surged back through the cut.
But this was of no use.
Two more thick vines immediately filled the gap.
The right side of the fire line was immediately covered as well.
The vines used their tips to pry up frozen soil, rolling up snowy mud and the corpses of their kin, covering the fire trench layer by layer.
Zhao Mengmeng rushed to the edge of the trench with a military shovel, desperately prying out the charred obstructions.
The heatwave scorched her eyelashes, curling and yellowing them.
"These beasts are learning from us to use dirt to put out the fire!"
"It's not learning; it's a very primitive trial-and-error instinct."
"That's still disgusting!"
Lin Ye leaped down, grabbed the last bag of oil dregs, and threw it into the dimmest part of the fire.
The grease burst, and the flames reignited.
The defense line was barely sustained.
But their reserves had hit rock bottom.
The animal fat they had saved for the winter was all cleared out in these few minutes.
Zhao Mengmeng picked up the last piece of wolf fat and threw it into the right trench.
"Come on! Trade your whole family for a pot of hotpot oil!"
The Blood-colored wave pressed down hard.
The fire wall was eventually filled in at three points.
Thin vines drilled into the interior of the defense line through the gaps, their charred outer skins twitching frantically on the snow.
Lin Ye swung out the Dark Weaver.
The Nano-wire swept across, cutting the intruding vines into pieces.
The severed segments continued to twitch on the snow.
Zhao Mengmeng stepped on one segment and drove her dagger straight down.
Dark red sap splattered onto her shoe, immediately sizzling and emitting white smoke.
She jumped back in pain: "It's even corrosive!"
"Don't engage in close-quarters combat."
"Got it, this thing is more difficult to deal with than an ex-boyfriend."
Lin Ye watched the fire wall being constantly cut off, his left eye opening and closing briefly.
Within his vision.
The overwhelming red light covered the entire surface toward the sinkhole, and it was still surging outward wildly.
This little fire trench couldn't possibly burn them all.
He closed his left eye.
"The fire line won't last long."
Zhao Mengmeng asked urgently: "Retreat into the cave and hold our ground?"
"We'll be sealed in."
"Then where do we go?"
Before she could finish speaking.
A roar suddenly erupted from the snow forest to the left of the Water Pool.
The ground shook violently.
This wasn't the faint sound of vines slithering along the ground.
This was the dull thud of heavy creatures rampaging and smashing through thick tree trunks.
Zhao Mengmeng turned the crossbow: "Are we hosting a monster team-building event today?"
The edge of the snow forest was forcibly smashed open.
A horned mammoth covered in thick snow charged out of the tree canopy.
Its shoulder height approached three meters, and its twin horns were curved like blades.
A broken half of a Blood Vine hung from its forehead, and its eyeballs were filled with bloodshot veins burst from terror.
A second one.
A third one.
Several armored Snow-backed Rhinos followed close behind.
Their back plates were wrapped in vines stretched to the point of breaking, and they puffed out heavy white steam from their mouths and noses.
They completely ignored the firelight and the two people in front.
They were just blindly charging forward.
The first horned mammoth crashed headlong into the vanguard of the sea of vines.
Its elephant legs, thick as pillars, crushed a large swath of thin vines with one step.
Its giant horns swept wildly, tossing whole swathes of piled-up vines into the air, smashing them directly into the fire trench ahead.
The Snow-backed Rhinos charged across the snow surface with their back plates, grinding rows of Blood Vines into mud.
Zhao Mengmeng was stunned: "Are they helping us fight?"
"They are running for their lives."
"That still counts as temporary teammates!"
The Great Xia Live Stream was filled with excited comments.
[Holy crap, giant beasts crashing the formation!]
[Vines: I was suppressing the fire line just fine, who drove a dump truck here?]
[The exotic beasts have been driven crazy too; this vine expansion is completely unreasonable.]
[This wave has bought time for Brother Eye, run!]
The weight and explosive power of the giant beasts did indeed forcibly tear open the Red Tide.
But the number of vines surging in from behind far exceeded common sense.
The crushed vines sprayed acid, wrapping layer by layer around the limbs of the giant beasts.
A Snow-backed Rhino was pulled to a halt.
Countless thin vines drilled forcefully into its mouth, nose, and ear canals.
The screams were muffled and desperate.
In just a few breaths.
The massive body collapsed like a deflated balloon, and its skeleton pushed out through the gashes in its flesh.
Zhao Mengmeng's scalp went numb watching: "This is literally eating and spawning troops on the spot!"
Lin Ye turned decisively, his gaze sweeping over the tunnel entrance halfway up the Ice Waterfall.
"Retreat."
Zhao Mengmeng's gaze swept across that direction.
That was the stronghold they had built with their lives.
The fire pit, wooden bed, water reservoir—all the confidence they had to survive the harsh winter was in there.
Her voice tightened: "Just throw it all away?"
"If we can't take it, seal it all off."
Lin Ye turned back first, heading straight for the Ice Waterfall.
Zhao Mengmeng dove into the cave, grabbing dried meat, coarse salt, and flint, stuffing them desperately into her backpack.
Lin Ye tore down the largest wolf king pelt, rolled it up quickly, and strapped it to his back with a tree bark rope.
The crossbow, wooden arrows, military shovel, and Fire Axe were all hung in easily accessible positions.
Zhao Mengmeng picked up the aluminum pot, paused for half a second, dumped the scraps inside toward the door, and strapped the empty pot to the outside of her pack.
"Help me."
Lin Ye had already moved several large stones from beside the Water Pool and forced them against the inside of the door gap.
Working together, the two filled the remaining tunnel entrance with frozen soil, gray mud, and crushed ice.
Outside the tunnel.
The defense line collapsed.
The Blood-colored Vines flooded over the charred trench, surging wildly into the Water Pool area.
The fallen Snow-backed Rhinos were submerged, and the ice cracks they had caused were covered with dark red severed limbs.
Lin Ye looked up at the cliff ridge above.
"Go up."
The Dark Weaver hummed.
Several strands of Nano-wire crossed the ice wall and bit into the rock layer at the top of the cliff.
Lin Ye grabbed Zhao Mengmeng's belt.
The engine retracted to its limit, and the two were pulled up rapidly, pressed close to the Ice Waterfall.
More than ten meters below their feet.
The first batch of vines that climbed over the Water Pool surged onto the overhang, their sharp tips piercing the outer door panel that had just been sealed.
Zhao Mengmeng fought back the nausea and looked away.
"Half a minute later, and we would have been two dishes inside the cave."
"Don't look down."
The Dark Weaver engaged again to pull them up.
The two crossed the top of the Ice Waterfall and, using the momentum, crashed into a snow pit at the top of the cliff.
Lin Ye pushed himself up and retracted the metal wires.
Zhao Mengmeng climbed up: "Where do we go now?"
"The ruins."
"It's full of Pale Species there!"
"Just enough for our needs."
Lin Ye brushed the snow off the shoulder of his cloak and picked up the military shovel.
"Lead the vines over there and let them fight the Pale Species."
