59: Chapter 59 Primitive Technology and Self-Sufficiency
The sky was draped in the glow of the sunset.
In the forest, the roars of exotic beasts rose and fell one after another.
Lin Ye stepped on the pile of decaying leaves, raised his hand to fire the Wind-Chasing Claw, which latched onto a tree branch a dozen meters high.
The cable retracted, and his entire body soared into the air.
Before night fell, the ground was definitely not a place to linger.
Jumping, climbing, swinging.
Lin Ye moved at high speed through the canopy layer, leaving the dangers of the ground far beneath his feet.
Just after crossing a giant tree, there was a strange noise above his head.
Lin Ye looked up.
An exotic beast covered in black spots pounced down from the tree trunk above.
Its sharp claws were spread wide, aimed straight at Lin Ye's face.
The light screen in his right eye popped up with information.
[Spotted Lynx (Medium)]
This beast's timing was incredibly precise, catching him exactly when he was in mid-air preparing to descend.
But Lin Ye was not one to be trifled with.
He kicked off the side of the tree trunk with his right foot, forcing his body to flip in mid-air.
At the same time, his left hand reached toward the outside of his backpack.
He pulled out his fire axe.
Swinging from bottom to top, he struck with all his might.
"Crack."
The axe blade smashed directly through the lynx's jawbone and hacked straight into its brain stem.
[Killed medium exotic beast, points +5]
Lin Ye grabbed the lynx by the scruff of its neck with his right hand and landed his feet on another thick branch.
The movement was clean and efficient, killing it in one blow.
His left eye opened slightly.
Eye of Destiny, activate.
The lynx's corpse emitted a faint green light, with only a few gray spots.
The pollution level was extremely low.
"Thanks, Mother Nature. Even after clocking out, you're still handing out performance bonuses."
He hoisted the lynx corpse onto his shoulder and continued leaping through the forest.
...
Meanwhile.
In the Void Sea, on the various Floating Islands of the Lost Lands.
Those Challengers who were greedy for double points and wanted to stay in the ruins to grind points overnight were now paying the price.
At night, the Pale Species had greater stamina and became more aggressive.
A John Bull Challenger had just hidden inside an abandoned car when the roof was ripped open by five Pale Species.
Before he could even scream for help, he was torn to shreds.
Two South Korea Challengers who were traveling together were cornered in an underground garage by dozens of Pale Species.
In less than ten seconds, they were literally "smashed to pieces for peace."
Screams echoed throughout all the major global livestreams.
Even Scott, who had been leading the whole way, was tucking his tail and hiding in a safe corner at this moment.
In the Great Xia Live Stream, the barrage of comments rolled frantically.
[Who was it that just said our Brother Eye was cowardly? Come out and walk two steps?]
[If you're not enthusiastic about clocking out, you've got a problem with your brain. This is the consequence of being a workaholic!]
[Double points during the day, double the chance of dying at night!]
[As expected, "playing it safe" is the truth.]
...
Waterfall cliff.
Lin Ye swung himself against the cliff wall, his body passing through the curtain of water.
Stepping into the karst cave, he let out a long sigh of relief.
He threw the lynx corpse from his shoulder onto the ground with a "thud."
He pressed his wrist terminal.
A semi-transparent scanning light frame shot out, completely enveloping the lynx corpse.
"Upload."
White light flickered, and the corpse vanished into thin air.
[Great Xia Challenger: Lin Ye, successfully uploaded supplies!]
[Supplies: Spotted Lynx]
[Detecting...]
[Quality: Excellent]
[Triggered 8,000x critical hit!]
Over on Blue Star, at the Great Xia National Fortune Resource Plaza.
8,000 lynx corpses piled up into a small mountain, and the logistics army immediately rolled up their sleeves to get to work.
Inside the karst cave, Lin Ye walked over to the fire pit.
He struck the flint, sparks fell into the tinder, and the campfire quickly flared up.
The firelight dispelled the darkness and damp cold.
He used his dagger to cut up mutton bones with meat on them and tossed them into a small iron pot to simmer.
He also whittled two branches, skewered some fatty and lean mutton, and stuck them at an angle beside the fire pit.
Before long, the bone soup in the pot was bubbling away.
Grease dripped from the surface of the roasted meat onto the charcoal, making a sizzling sound.
He sprinkled on some coarse salt—the original, authentic flavor.
Lin Ye tore off a piece of roasted mutton and stuffed it into his mouth, then picked up the iron pot and took a sip of hot soup.
Warmth spread from his stomach throughout his body, and the exhaustion of the day was swept away.
The fire inside the cave was warm, and the aroma of meat filled the air.
Outside the cave, the Scarlet Night was full of murderous intent.
After eating and drinking his fill, Lin Ye did not rush to rest.
The fear of insufficient firepower is something engraved in the DNA of the people of Great Xia.
With no ammunition for the crossbow, how could he sleep soundly?
He walked over to the pile of wood in the corner, which was material left over from building infrastructure yesterday.
He had picked out some straight pieces of wood when he collected them, and now they were coming in handy.
Lin Ye searched through them and picked out a dozen hardwood twigs about the thickness of a little finger.
The Great Xia audience was stunned.
[What is Brother Eye doing with twigs? Using them as toothpicks?]
[Stop joking, they're that thick—is he trying to make weapons?]
[He wants to make arrows with these conditions? He doesn't even have a piece of iron; can they even break through defenses when shot?]
Lin Ye pulled out a metal arrow and placed it on the ground as a template.
He swung his dagger, cutting off the excess length of the wooden twigs and then scraping off the rough bark.
He brought over two flat stone slabs and clamped the wooden sticks between them, using force to press them straight.
He moved them to the edge of the fire pit, using the high heat to slowly dry and set them.
After processing the arrow shafts, Lin Ye set his sights on the sheep bones left over from earlier.
He used the fire axe to hack them into small pieces, then used the dagger to refine their shape.
Finally, holding the roughly shaped bone pieces, he ground them back and forth on a rough rock.
Bone dust fell with a rustling sound.
A bone arrowhead with sharp edges was finished.
As for the fletching, there were no bird feathers in the karst cave.
He simply picked a few tough, flexible leaves and cut them all into identical triangles.
Lin Ye returned to the fire pit, moved the stones aside, and picked up a dried and set wooden shaft.
He split a two-centimeter-deep slit at the front of the shaft and wedged the sheep bone arrowhead into it.
Then he wrapped it tightly with thin tree bark he had stripped off.
Finally, he did the same at the end of the shaft, tying on three triangular leaves to form flared fletching.
A primitive, simple wooden arrow was finished.
"Let's test the feel."
Lin Ye walked to the depths of the karst cave and wedged a piece of raw meat into a crevice.
He came to the entrance of the cave.
He raised the crossbow, loaded the arrow, and cocked it.
He aimed and pulled the trigger.
"Whoosh!"
The wooden arrow flew off the string.
"Thud!"
The bone arrowhead pierced through the raw mutton and embedded itself into the crevice behind it.
The leaves at the tail were still vibrating slightly.
Lin Ye stepped forward and pulled out the wooden arrow with force.
The wooden shaft hadn't split, and the bone hadn't shattered.
Although it wasn't as sturdy or durable as a metal arrow, its penetrating power and stability were qualified.
"Not bad, not bad. The ammunition crisis is temporarily resolved!"
Lin Ye patted the debris off his hands with satisfaction.
He turned around and sat cross-legged back by the fire pit.
Striking while the iron is hot, he would finish making the remaining dozen or so wooden arrows tonight.
In the Great Xia Live Stream.
[What is called self-sufficiency? Brother Eye's hardcore manual crafting just blew my mind!]
[Other contestants: Bullets are out, close your eyes and wait for death. Brother Eye: Scavenge some twigs and sheep bones, and you can sneak attack and kill a few more when you go out.]
[Actually, I can do that too! Give me an axe, and I can chop out a coffin for myself.]
[This is the kind of livestream a real man watches; what's the use of that flashy, pretentious stuff.]
The firelight flickered, and Lin Ye's hands didn't stop moving.
Just when he had three more to finish.
"Roar—!"
A deafening roar pierced through the waterfall at the cave entrance.
It was very close!
Right by the Water Pool!
Lin Ye dropped his work, grabbed his fire axe and crossbow, and walked toward the cave entrance.
