203: The perceptive Gu Xiheng
The eyes of several people flashed as they all came to a realization.
Looking closely, they indeed found zombies with pale pupils among the horde; they raised their weapons, thrust them into the brains, and successfully dug out crystal cores.
The group moved swiftly through the zombies; every time their figures paused for a moment, it meant another zombie crystal core was in hand.
Every so often, Ai Yue would bring down a wave of lightning, paralyzing and freezing them; after three or four waves, the ordinary zombies could no longer hold on and turned into scorched bones on the ground.
At this point, the zombies from the periphery would continuously surge in, and Ai Yue would keep releasing lightning without interruption, repeating this cycle to reach a state of balance.
With Li Shilan present, the group was not at all worried about exhaustion; with Ai Yue, Li Shilan, and Gong Qiuqiu there, the others weaving through the zombie horde to gouge out crystal cores found it as easy as picking up money on a mountain of gold.
The commotion caused by Ai Yue's group naturally alerted Gu Xiheng; he didn't understand why they weren't resting and instead were slaughtering their way through the zombie horde without a moment's pause.
If it were to say they were clearing zombies for the base, based on his understanding of them, they weren't nearly that noble.
Gu Xiheng keenly felt that there must be a huge benefit to doing this; thinking of this, he could no longer sit still, put on his gear, and immediately led an elite squad out of the base gates toward Ai Yue and the others, fighting their way through.
Ai Yue spotted Gu Xiheng leading people over from a distance and frowned: "His nose is as sharp as a dog's; he reacted so quickly."
But she couldn't stop him either, and could only allow Gu Xiheng to lead his people closer.
Gu Xiheng and his elite squad didn't have the same abilities as Ai Yue's group; at the cost of one life, they finally merged with Ai Yue and the others.
"Ai Yue, are you hurt? Is everyone okay? I brought people to support you," Gu Xiheng said, arriving at Ai Yue's side while panting heavily.
Gong Qiuqiu smiled playfully upon hearing this: "Xiheng, look at the state you're in; I can't tell if you came to support us or if you came to seek death!"
Gu Xiheng rolled his eyes at him and retorted bluntly: "What do you think? Do I have a problem in the head to come here just to die?"
Then he asked tentatively: "But then again, you people just arrived at the base; instead of taking time to rest, you ran out here to help us fight zombies? Comrade Gong Qiuqiu, when did you become so public-spirited?"
"When have I not been public-spirited? I am a person who loves helping others most; wherever there is trouble, I will help! Look, aren't I here helping your base clear out zombies this time?" Gong Qiuqiu said nonchalantly.
"Alright, we both know each other too well, especially you—a person who doesn't get up early unless there's a profit. Would you be so kind as to help us clear zombies unconditionally?" Gu Xiheng clearly didn't believe Gong Qiuqiu's rhetoric.
Gong Qiuqiu curled his lip: "Believe it or not, it's up to you!"
Gu Xiheng swept his gaze around and happened to see Gong Qiumu nearby digging a white crystal out of a zombie's head.
His eyes flashed as he understood in his heart; what Ai Yue and the others were after was that thing.
Seeing them go to such lengths, this thing dug out of a zombie's head must be extraordinary—perhaps it was something similar to the transparent stone.
Gu Xiheng understood most of it and couldn't help but feel excited; now that the Ancient Centipedes had disappeared, the transparent stones were being used up, and the base's stockpile would soon run out.
He hadn't expected that at this critical juncture, he would find out there was a substitute; he couldn't be happier.
At this moment, he felt that Ai Yue was truly his lucky star!
Seeing Gu Xiheng's irrepressible joy, Ai Yue knew he had figured it out, lamenting once again how keen he was.
Gu Xiheng no longer bothered bickering with Gong Qiuqiu and ordered his men to quickly kill zombies and dig out the white crystals from their heads.
Although those soldiers didn't understand Gu Xiheng's intentions, they didn't delay in executing the order.
But the results left them even more confused—what white crystals? There was nothing inside but brain matter.
The group cut the zombie heads into small pieces but still didn't find the white crystals Gu Xiheng mentioned.
Seeing this scene, Gu Xiheng's brow also furrowed.
That's not right; he clearly saw them gouging them out of the heads, so why couldn't his men find any?
Gu Xiheng thought carefully and replayed the scene he just saw in his mind; he didn't find anything different, so he carefully watched the actions of Ai Guosheng and the others, only then realizing that they weren't gouging every zombie, but were picking and choosing.
It seemed only special zombies had them.
Seeing that Gu Xiheng had no harvest, Ai Yue didn't offer a reminder either, happy to see him looking confused and getting nothing; who told him to always defend his sister and wife regardless of right or wrong? Let him worry!
Ai Yue stopped paying attention to Gu Xiheng and focused on striking down zombies.
Gu Xiheng was no pushover either and soon observed the difference, recalling that those zombies with exceptionally agile movements and incredible speed were the ones he discovered a few days ago that upgraded by devouring each other.
He estimated that only these zombies that had upgraded after mutation would have the white crystals.
He found a mutant zombie in the horde, approached it, and released a blast of flames, burning the zombie until it had no strength to resist, then split its head open with a blade.
To his surprise and delight, Gu Xiheng found that there indeed was a white crystal in this zombie's brain.
He immediately dug it out and held it in his hand, feeling the warm, jade-like sensation coming from the crystal.
He instinctively began to absorb the energy within the crystal and immediately felt the fatigue in his body fade slightly, and the Superpower within him increased by a tiny bit.
Gu Xiheng was truly excited now; he gripped the crystal tightly, a burning light flashing in his eyes, and immediately ordered the soldiers to only dig from the upgraded zombies.
Although Gu Xiheng knew now, he didn't have the same abilities as Ai Yue's group to collect them quickly.
He could only stay at the edge of the area Ai Yue had cleared, using the deterrent of her lightning to constantly search for and kill upgraded zombies.
Though he had gains, they were far less than what Ai Yue's group collected, but there was no helping it; they had formed their team first, and it was impossible for him to join at such a moment; he could only wait for the next chance to join Ai Yue's team.
Ai Yue's group, along with the people led by Gu Xiheng, fought from day until night before stopping!
Ai Yue called for everyone to retreat, and Gu Xiheng naturally merged with Ai Yue's group, fighting their way toward the base gates.
Ai Yue and the others didn't object to his behavior and successfully returned inside the base.
Gu Xiheng took off his blood-stained outer coat, naturally handed it to a nearby soldier, and said with a smile: "Ai Yue, Qiuqiu, Uncle, Auntie, next time let's go out together to find those white crystals!"
