102: Chapter 102 The Zhang Family
"You..." Chen Zhi was a bit angry that Lin Ning hadn't said anything sooner. Although he had long anticipated that Lin Ning might be followed and monitored, his worry didn't diminish.
"I was planning to tell you tonight." Lin Ning interrupted him, paused, and said in a low voice, "I observed them; it's two police officers."
Chen Zhi: "...How are you sure?"
Lin Ning gave a bitter laugh, "Their walk, their demeanor, their facial expressions, and the hand signals they used when they took turns following me. I'm familiar with all that!"
Chen Zhi could hear the emotion in Lin Ning's voice.
"The person who investigated you yesterday was a deputy station chief," he pondered for a moment before saying, "Perhaps these two police officers were assigned the task of monitoring you as a suspect."
"???" An inexplicable sense of awkwardness was suppressed by Lin Ning, who then raised his voice and chimed in, "Hahaha, I was considering that too!"
"Anyway, hurry up and make your arrests; I still have orders to fulfill."
Lin Ning hurriedly hung up the phone and subconsciously glanced to his front left.
A young man was straddling an electric scooter, pretending to be on a phone call.
Damn, he almost thought that "there wasn't a single good person in Hongtong County!"
He had originally intended to summon the energy he had when he first arrived and work until eleven or twelve at night. If I'm having a rough time, I'll run you guys ragged until you drop; nobody gets to have an easy life.
It was better to be a bit gentler now. Lin Ning checked the time on his phone; he would just work for another two hours and then call it a day.
He didn't push himself to take extreme orders anymore; he drove leisurely for two hours, kept his word, and finished work to head home.
Linfeng Garden.
Just as he entered the residential compound, he saw a small crowd gathered at the base of the apartment building, mostly elderly men and women, all craning their necks with glowing eyes, more engrossed than if they were watching a TV drama.
An argument?
Lin Ning pushed his scooter over to take a look.
In the center of the crowd, two plump women in their thirties were shifting their attacks from physical appearance to crude, explicit insults.
"You shameless b*tch, beep-beep-beep-beep...!"
"You slut, your mother is a beep-beep-beep-beep..."
"..."
"..."
The words that followed couldn't even be described with "beeps."
The two women, getting increasingly worked up, were finally about to reach the climax that Lin Ning and the others loved to watch; both of them spread their hands, ready to charge.
A man standing to the side, whom everyone had ignored and assumed was just a passerby, stepped forward and grabbed both of their arms, pushing them apart.
"Talk if you want to talk, but don't fight!"
Lin Ning looked at this spoilsport—Zhang Shitou—what business is it of yours!
Hey, hey, hey, what are you doing? Let go!
The two women took the opportunity to each grab one of Zhang Shitou's arms, continuing to curse at each other across him.
Lin Ning watched, dumbfounded. What was going on?
Someone tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around to see Jin Er and Xu San. The two were squatting on the edge of a flower bed, eating melon seeds and watching the show with great relish.
"What... is going on?" Lin Ning asked in a low voice.
Xu San spat out a melon seed shell, chuckled, and lowered his voice: "Fighting over a man, obviously. Zhang Shitou said he wanted to break it off with the previous person, and both women thought the other had squeezed them out. Hence this!"
Lin Ning was even more confused. He looked at Zhang Shitou in the middle of the crowd—an average-looking man of short stature—and then looked at the two women with explosive combat power who were cursing each other in the street for his sake.
"What do they see in him?" Lin Ning really couldn't help asking, "Wasn't Brother Zhang Shitou so poor before that he ate steamed buns with pickles? He hasn't gotten rich now, has he?"
Xu San threw down the melon seed shells, leaned in, and with a meaningful smile that all men understood, he gestured with his hand to indicate length and whispered: "As the old saying goes, 'Zhang's Length'!"
Lin Ning: "???"
"F*ck..." After realizing what he meant, he cursed under his breath, unable to laugh or cry, "Be careful, or that Li person will come looking for you to fight to the death!"
As expected of an old driver; he almost couldn't keep up with the speed of that joke.
Knowing that a fight definitely wouldn't break out, and since they were "sisters-in-law" anyway, Lin Ning lost interest in listening to the shrewish swearing and got up to leave.
He was grabbed by Jin Er.
"We have real business," Jin Er said. "We've gotten a general idea about the two targets you gave us yesterday."
Lin Ning raised his eyebrows, signaling for him to go on.
"One is for stealing electric scooter batteries; besides the four people you gave us, their gang should have two more people. Neighbors said six people live in their room. The other is involved in gambling; they say they run their own book but piggyback on the Hong Kong horse racing scene."
Lin Ning yawned out of boredom; too basic!
But even a mosquito is meat no matter how small.
Especially gambling; the reward should be quite substantial.
"Mm." Lin Ning nodded, "I have some things to take care of in the next few days. I'll tell Officer Li Feng, and you guys can go directly to him tomorrow to explain the situation clearly and give a statement."
Jin Er and the others weren't actually very willing to deal with officials, but they nodded anyway, "Alright then."
Watching the still-intense battle, Lin Ning shook his head and went upstairs to his home.
He took a shower and called Officer Li Feng.
He briefly mentioned that Jin Er and the others would be going to give a statement tomorrow.
"Alright, got it." Officer Li Feng agreed readily, then his tone turned cheeky, "That group you reported yesterday for secret filming? They've been caught."
"Oh?" Lin Ning, hearing that tone, played along.
"Last night, we conducted a joint operation with Officer Yang Jun and his team." Officer Li Feng lowered his voice, "Good grief, they were right in the middle of a group, you know, doing that thing, tsk tsk..."
"Whoa!" Lin Ning hadn't expected it to be such a coincidence.
"We dug out so many cameras. The girls, who were already crying, almost tore those scumbags apart."
Lin Ning didn't know how to comment on that.
If they were playing that wildly, did they even care about this?
They chatted a bit more and then hung up.
The night was long and deep, and he had no desire to sleep.
After tempering his Psychic Power, Lin Ning sat alone, holding his phone and scrolling through Douyin.
After watching a few videos of young ladies, he irritably threw his phone aside.
Flashes of Jiang Yu's face—her eyes curving into crescent moons when she laughed heartily—kept appearing before his eyes, along with her scalding tears when she buried her face in his shoulder and cried.
The atmosphere had been so good at the restaurant that day.
Zhang Shitou really deserves to die!
However, thinking of his current situation, Lin Ning felt a bit relieved.
He pulled the blanket over his head; sleep, he thought, once he fell asleep, he wouldn't have to make any choices.
