195: Chapter 195 Protecting You

Jiang Yu's hand pressed against the glass door of the ICU, her fingertips turning white.

Chen Zhi glanced at Lin Ning lying inside, then looked at Jiang Yu.

Three seconds later, he lowered his head and tapped on his screen—

"Watch him closely, do not alert the enemy. Investigate everyone associated with the target."

He put away his phone, took two steps forward, and said softly, "He is fine now; he will get better."

He paused, then added, "He saved many people."

Jiang Yu did not respond.

Chen Zhi turned and walked toward the elevator.

After a few steps, he paused and looked back.

Jiang Yu was still standing there, her shoulders trembling.

Chen Zhi pressed his lips together tightly and turned into the elevator.

The only sound left in the hallway was the electrocardiogram monitor.

Beep, beep, beep.

Jiang Yu's tears fell.

Large drops fell onto the back of her hand and onto the floor. She didn't make a sound, just stared at the person inside, tears streaming down her face.

The beeping of the heart monitor in the hallway continued; she didn't know how much time had passed.

She raised her hand and wiped the tears away with the back of her hand, her movements crisp and efficient.

There was only one thought in her mind—I must hold on; I must watch over him until he gets better.

Then she strode toward the nurse's station.

"I am the patient's family member," she said, her voice hoarse but her tone steady. "Can I get a caregiver pass? Also, please tell me what I need to prepare for follow-up care."

The nurse looked up at her, paused for a moment, and handed her a form.

Jiang Yu took it and lowered her head to fill out the form. Her hand was still shaking a little, but her writing was steady.

Jiang Yu handed the form back and asked, "I want to stay by his bedside. When can I do that?"

The nurse looked at the word "fiancée" on the form, her tone softening. "Lin Ning's condition is basically stable now. If he's fine after observing for one night, you can stay with him once he's moved to a ward tomorrow."

Since this patient was using the military's special green channel, the nurse kindly reminded her, "He will be moved to a high-class ward. If you can't find him tomorrow, come to me and I'll look it up for you."

"Okay, thank you, thank you!" Jiang Yu bowed slightly to thank her.

She returned to the ICU entrance, looked at Lin Ning inside a few times, clenched her fists, and turned to leave.

Jiang Yu took a taxi back to Lin Ning's place, packed the supplies bought during his last hospitalization along with some daily necessities into two bags, and carried them.

She went downstairs, took a taxi, and returned to the hospital.

She knew that caregiving wasn't allowed in the ICU, but she wanted to be as close to Lin Ning as possible, and she didn't want him lying alone in the ward.

Jiang Yu sat down on the resting chair in the ICU hallway, completely oblivious to her palms being reddened by the straps. She put on her headphones and started searching for "nursing care for unconscious patients."

She studied diligently, practicing massage techniques for bedridden patients and tutorials on turning them over without pressing on tubes, occasionally raising her hand to practice the motions in the air...

The lights in the hallway dimmed; the night had deepened.

Jiang Yu put away her phone, took out the foam mat she had brought, used one bag as a pillow, clutched the other, and prepared to rest on the floor of the hallway.

She wasn't actually sleepy, but she forced herself to sleep—tomorrow, she still had to take good care of Lin Ning.

The third day.

The sky was completely bright; sunlight leaked through the gap in the curtains and fell onto the side of the hospital bed.

The heart monitor beat steadily, beep, beep, beep.

Jiang Yu finished giving Lin Ning a full-body massage, wiped the sweat from her brow, sat by the bed, and lowered her head to take notes from the tutorial on her phone.

The screen was playing "Dietary Transition After Comatose Patients Wake Up." She pressed pause and copied down the main points. Her ballpoint pen scratched across the paper.

Every little while, she looked up at Lin Ning on the bed, picked up a cotton swab dipped in water, and gently moistened his lips.

The person on the bed's eyelashes fluttered.

They fluttered again.

Then, he slowly opened his eyes.

The first thing Lin Ning saw was the sunlight. The second thing was Jiang Yu.

The sunlight fell on the tips of her hair, warm and glowing. She was looking down, her profile quiet and peaceful as she focused on writing something.

Lin Ning opened his mouth, wanting to call her.

His throat felt like it had been rubbed by sandpaper; he couldn't make a sound.

He moved his fingers.

Jiang Yu seemed to sense something and looked up.

Their eyes met.

Her eyes instantly reddened.

But it only lasted for a second. The next moment, a smile bloomed on her face. She quickly stood up, reached out to press the call button by the bed, and then turned to pour some water.

Her movements were fluid and seamless, not letting him see what was in her eyes.

She brought the water back, held the straw to his lips, the temperature just right.

Lin Ning took two sips, his throat moistened, and he rasped in a breathy voice, "You..."

"Shut up." Jiang Yu put the cup down. "If your throat is uncomfortable, don't speak yet."

Lin Ning looked at her.

She had lost weight, there were dark circles under her eyes, her lips were a bit dry, and her hair was tied up casually with a few stray strands hanging down.

But her eyes were still sparkling.

Lin Ning wanted to say something, but after receiving a glare from her, he swallowed his words.

Several doctors filed in. Jiang Yu stood to the side, looking slightly nervous as she said, "His temperature was 36.8 degrees last night. He had slight convulsions in the early morning; the on-duty doctor should have a record of it. His urination is normal, no hematuria, about 40 milliliters per hour. His heart rate this morning is stable between 70 and 80, and I just gave him some water."

After the doctors examined him and discussed the machine data, they nodded at Jiang Yu. "The patient is recovering very well now. Considering his condition when he was first admitted, it can be called a miracle. We'll run two more tests in a moment to see. If there are no other issues, the next phase will be the recovery period."

They also praised her, "The family caregiver has done a great job, which is a huge help to the patient's recovery."

Jiang Yu breathed a sigh of relief, said nothing, and just looked at Lin Ning.

Lin Ning felt a bit guilty under her gaze, though he didn't know why he felt guilty.

After the doctors left, Jiang Yu's tense shoulders visibly relaxed.

She tidied up the notes on the table and said casually, "Wang Qiao and Yang Weifeng have been asking about your condition every day; they were worried sick. Now that you're awake, should I notify them?"

Lin Ning blinked, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his mouth, and rasped in a breathy voice, "Okay..."

Time flew by until five in the afternoon.

The ward door clicked open, and two people squeezed in.

Wang Qiao walked in front, carrying fruits and a thermal container.

Yang Weifeng followed behind, carrying a big bag of takeout, shouting as he entered, "Lin-za! Daddy has come to see you!"

Lin Ning, lying on the bed, suddenly regretted letting these two idiots come.

Looking at the two of them and the things in their hands, dead memories began to attack him.

Wang Qiao handed the things to Jiang Yu, muttering, "Thank you for your hard work, sister-in-law. This is soup stewed by Crazy's wife; have some to nourish yourself. Eat more of this fruit, it's good for your skin. We also bought barbecue and stir-fried dishes; eat a bit later to relieve your fatigue..."

Yang Weifeng put down the things, leaned over to the bedside, looked Lin Ning up and down, clicked his tongue twice, and said sarcastically, "Not bad. Fourteen hours of emergency rescue, three days in a coma, and you actually managed to pull through."

Wang Qiao came over and chimed in, "I heard you went off to be a hero? I don't know about anything else, but the way you keep ending up in the hospital and needing emergency rescue, you could definitely inherit the title of 'Pig Jianqiang'."

Lin Ning was both angry and guilty. The guilt wasn't directed at these two idiots. He glanced at Jiang Yu who was busy working, opened his mouth, and let out a breathy sound.

Yang Weifeng leaned in close to listen, "What? What did you say?"
