100: persuade
Chapter 99: Persuasion
Paul held his teacup, his gaze fixed on the lush oak tree, remaining silent for a long time.
"Another small miracle," Godwin, who was beside him, said.
"Now I finally understand why you were so certain that Lord Arthur would be able to establish good relations with the Priestesses of the Whispering Place."
"Lord Arthur has undoubtedly received the Goddess's blessing."
Paul sighed with emotion: "I originally thought that to win over the local priests,
"I would have to use some methods and spend some money. I never expected it to go so smoothly. This truly exceeded my expectations."
Godwin reminded him in due course: "The priests of the Mother Earth Church are easy to deal with. The truly tricky ones are probably the Priestesses of Bastet."
"You want me to help introduce the priests of the Dancing Lady?"
After listening to Arthur's request, Juan confirmed.
"Precisely, I hope to gain their support."
"But I don't know them at all, and as priests of different faiths, it would be too rude to visit them unannounced."
Juan pondered for a moment, then replied: "That's not a problem. There's no conflict between us and them."
"In fact, to deal with the Night Mist, Ms. Laetitia and I often cooperate."
"Oh, by the way, Ms. Laetitia is their leader."
No sooner had Juan finished speaking than a priest hurried in to report that Ms. Laetitia had come to see him.
This sudden visit surprised both Arthur and Juan.
A moment later, three ladies were in the reception room.
The middle-aged woman in a long robe sat at the table.
The other two young women, veiled and boldly dressed, stood not far away.
Arthur dared not underestimate these two.
If he guessed correctly, these two escorts accompanying the Priestess were the Bending Blade dancers of Bastet's temple.
More than their graceful figures, people should pay attention to the two dangerous Bending Blades at their waists.
The reason Arthur was so concerned about them was because they had been frequently winking at him since they entered the room.
And their superior, Laetitia, clearly didn't care about her subordinates flirting with the Saint of the Mother Earth.
"I never expected you to grace us with your presence," Juan broke the silence in the room.
A unique fragrance emanated from the Priestess, intermingling with the faint scent of fertilizer in the church, forming a peculiar aroma.
"I also didn't expect such surging energy to appear here," she said with a smile.
Then she turned her gaze to Arthur.
"You must be the Son of the Wolf, the Saint of the Mother Earth."
"Lord Arthur Glamorgan, right?"
"Please forgive my subordinates, Lord Arthur, they always like to collect handsome men."
The Priestess pronounced the word "collect" with a highly provocative tone.
Juan couldn't help but cough lightly.
"Oh~ Don't worry, Juan, you're also very popular among the girls."
The priest's cheeks immediately flushed red, and he quickly changed the subject: "The energy you sensed is the Earth Vein power guided by Lord Arthur."
"Oh, brother, if you don't mind, could you tell us about this Earth Vein energy?"
So, Arthur briefly explained the relevant information about the Earth Vein.
Of course, he wasn't foolish enough to reveal all his secrets, only saying that he had received divine revelation and found the Earth Vein under the Goddess's guidance.
Laetitia chuckled: "Sometimes, I truly envy you.
"Although your Goddess is silent, she always gives clear and precise guidance."
"But our deity is different; he is as unpredictable as a cat."
"We always have to rack our brains to fathom his intentions."
"So, what can this power do?"
"Resist the Night Mist," Arthur replied.
The Priestess raised an eyebrow and pressed: "Has it been verified?"
Arthur told them what had happened in Hearthfire Village.
Seeing that Laetitia still had a hesitant look on her face,
he asked: "Do you perhaps have a better method?"
The Priestess shook her head: "We can guide the power of the divine to establish a sanctuary."
"This can resist the Night Mist, and our people have tried it in some villages, and it is indeed effective."
"But this isn't enough to protect everyone here, is it?"
Facing Arthur's question, the Priestess merely spread her hands helplessly.
"If the Night Mist attacks here tomorrow night, what is your plan?" Arthur further asked.
Laetitia and Juan exchanged glances.
"Is this a revelation from the Mother Earth?" Juan asked.
Arthur didn't answer directly, only saying: "I want to know your answer."
"We will evacuate as many people as possible, and then transfer those who cannot be evacuated to the church," the Priestess replied.
Arthur pointed out incisively, "In that case, the enemy will easily occupy this place."
To this, neither religious leader could respond.
"So, I have a proposal, but it requires assistance from both of you," Arthur said.
The Priestess looked at the young Saint, "If the power of the Earth Vein can truly resist the Night Mist, we are happy to help."
Arthur explained his plan to them.
After listening, the Priestess said: "We will not object to you selling grain from the Whispering Place.
I also know that Lookout Fort has always been troubled by provisions.
"But due to our duty, we cannot express approval for this, but we will not oppose it either."
"As for other aspects, the Bastet Church will assist you."
"The Mother Earth Church will fully assist you," Juan also gave his reply, "We will also persuade the commander to accept the grain from the Whispering Place."
After receiving their promises, what Arthur had to do next was to persuade the commander.
After lunch, he bid farewell and left.
Before he left, one of the Priestess's attendants came forward and whispered to him: "If you come to our temple, remember to look for us."
"My sister and I would be happy to serve you."
With that, the girl looked at Godwin and Paul, and added: "We don't mind if they join too."
Godwin laughed awkwardly, while Paul shyly turned his head away.
Commander Jafar was checking the report submitted by his subordinates. Although the priests of the Mother Earth Church had tried their best to save some provisions, the remaining rations in the fort would still not last until the next supply delivery.
Messengers requesting grain had already been sent out; it remained to be seen how the two great families would react.
Lookout Fort was, after all, the largest fortress on the border.
Even if the higher-ups were unwilling, they wouldn't let them run out of food.
It was just unclear how much less the next supply of provisions would be, and how much of it would be substandard.
"Lord, the Baron of Qingfeng Valley and his two attendants request an audience," the orderly reported at the door.
"Let them in," the commander said.
Arthur entrusted the task of persuading the commander to Godwin and Paul.
After all, both of them were more eloquent than him.
Moreover, unlike the commander and Juan, Arthur had no advantage with him.
Initially, the commander looked down on and was repulsed by Arthur's two attendants.
But upon hearing that they could solve the grain problem, he immediately became energetic.
