121: Reasonable suspicion

Chapter 120 Reasonable Suspicion

The priest cleared out his office to serve as the venue for this meeting and discussion.

Among the residents of Mist Town, Louis was particularly special.

Even under Arthur's gaze, he showed no sign of fear.

He slowly raised his heavy eyelids and said in a dry voice, "According to normal procedure, you should take over the mayor's position."

Arthur sat behind the desk.

Everyone could feel the tension and unease in the office. "Are you their leader?" Arthur asked.

"What do you mean by that?" the tall Black woman beside him immediately retorted, "Are you questioning my husband?"

Drax let out a cold snort.

The Black woman looked at the Orc upon hearing the sound.

Although her physique was much inferior to Drax's.

She showed no fear and continued to glare coldly at the Orc.

"Everyone, everyone, please don't be like this." Louis quickly stood up to mediate, "We didn't come here to argue."

Once the atmosphere in the office had eased a little, he replied, "Dmitry used to lead us; I'm just temporarily managing in his stead."

"Of course, that's assuming people still need someone to lead them."

"But given the current situation in Mist Town, this temporary arrangement won't last long."

Arthur showed a slight smile.

This unassuming little man had more insight than most people here.

He judged that this was someone who, like Heir, could get things done.

So, he quickly reviewed the conclusions he had drawn from the available clues.

"Who killed the mayor?" he asked everyone in the room.

At first, everyone was a bit stunned by the question.

Seeing that Arthur was indeed waiting for an answer, Ismark spoke with a puzzled expression: "Sir, I told you, it was —"

"Werewolves, yes, I know." Arthur interrupted him, "But why would a pack of werewolves suddenly appear?

"Not only did they bite and injure so many people, but they also took advantage of the chaos to kill your father.

"Did anything like that happen in the previous attacks?"

Ismark shook his head.

"Do you think there was some kind of deal between the werewolves and the Undead?" the priest asked.

Arthur shook his head and said, "Most Undead are incommunicable.

"I dispersed that mist and know a little about it.

"In my opinion, the person who can control the mist would prefer to turn living people into Undead rather than hire werewolves to go on a killing spree.

"Fresh living people and decaying corpses are very different.

"Besides, why wouldn't the mist just transform those werewolves directly?"

The Baron's analysis gave everyone a new perspective on the mayor's death.

After some discussion, Louis tentatively asked, "Could it be that those werewolves have no connection to the Undead?"

Arthur nodded and replied, "According to what I know, almost all the people killed and bitten by the werewolves were followers of the Sheriff and the mayor."

The rest of the words, even unspoken, were understood by the others.

Louis's wife was the first to object: "This looks more like you're trying to sow discord among us."

"Is that so?" Arthur raised an eyebrow; he had underestimated this woman. "Why would I do that?"

"To seize control."

"Haha, if all of you die, who would I rule?" Arthur retorted.

Louis quickly whispered to his wife, "Stop talking, Ruby."

But his words clearly had no effect.

Ruby rolled up her sleeves and continued, "I've heard all about it; you have a Pioneer Group of nearly sixty people.

"If we start fighting among ourselves, you and your Pioneer Group can take the opportunity to enter Mist Town.

"You'd be thrilled if we started fighting, even though Joshua isn't a good person either; I've wanted to punch him for a long time."

Arthur asked again, "Then what? Let my people face those Undead alone?

"Why do you think my small Pioneer Group can compare to all of you?"

Ruby was momentarily speechless. She slapped her husband's back, probably wanting him to speak for her.

But Louis agreed with Arthur's statement.

"In that terrible night raid, both we and the Sheriff's people suffered heavy losses, but only Joshua's side wasn't greatly affected.

"Moreover, what I can't understand is that Joshua's people were clearly responsible for battlefield reconnaissance and relaying orders.

"But when those werewolves came, we received no warning at all; they caught us completely off guard."

The priest frowned. As the religious representative of Mist Town, he had tried his best to remain neutral throughout.

He accepted those infected with lycanthropy purely out of the mercy of the Righteous Hand and the requirements of his doctrine, certainly not out of any personal bias towards the Sheriff.

Now, after hearing this analysis, he felt that Joshua's suspicion was growing.

If Joshua had indeed colluded with werewolves to kill the mayor, then he must face judgment.

"We have no evidence." Heir said, "These vague suspicions alone cannot shake Joshua's position.

"And neither us nor the Sheriff can afford to conflict with them at a time like this."

Arthur naturally understood this point.

He did not want to provoke a conflict among the three factions of Mist Town, as all three groups could potentially become his subjects in the future.

Furthermore, the Undead attack could come at any time, and internal strife at this moment would undoubtedly be the most foolish behavior.

He just wanted the other two parties to be wary of Joshua.

"Then why couldn't it have been the Sheriff?" Ruby suddenly asked,

"Because his own son was also bitten to death by werewolves!" Louis said, "No one would put their only son in danger.

"Especially Gray. That child was raised by him alone; he would be willing to give his life for his child."

"Dorothy isn't dead yet." Heir's words exploded in the office like a thunderclap.

Fortunately, the priest immediately explained, which calmed Louis and Ruby down.

The two said nothing, but the expressions on their faces already said everything.

Heir took the opportunity to say, "Baron Arthur might have a way to save these people, but it requires your help."

Before Louis could speak, Ruby interjected, "If there's really a way to restore those people to normal, just say so; we'll definitely help."

Louis also echoed his agreement.

Heir then proposed that they wanted to find the exiled Brucian.

Upon hearing the name, Louis's expression changed, and he stammered, "He no one no one knows him Ruby couldn't stand it anymore and said loudly, "Oh, come on, it's come to this, just tell them about your brother.

"Are you going to take that secret to your grave?"

Without waiting for Louis to respond, Ruby said, "That's right, we've always been helping Brucian.

"Without our help, he wouldn't be able to survive alone in the forest.

"My two brothers know where he is; they usually bring him daily necessities.

"If you want to see him, I'll have them take you."

Arthur looked at Louis, wanting to hear his opinion.

Louis said with a wry smile, "Listen to her, just listen to her."
