215: Bait
Chapter 212: The Bait
Arthur and Varana devised a plan together, intending to ambush the Black Blood People who attacked the convoy two days later.
That day happened to be when the next batch of supplies was due to arrive in town.
Evidently, those Beastkin already knew the regular intervals of the convoy's deliveries.
This filled Arthur with suspicion.
He couldn't help but wonder if someone had leaked the convoy's information.
He discussed this point with Varana.
The young baron was exceptionally cautious when discussing this matter.
After all, suspecting one's allies was never a glorious thing.
A slight misstep could affect their relationship.
But Varana's calmness far exceeded Arthur's expectations.
She picked up on the suspicion in Arthur's words but showed no displeasure.
Facing the baron's suspicion that someone from her side had leaked information, Varana stated that she would conduct a further investigation.
However, just then, the previous intelligence about the Black Blood People attacking the convoy had a new follow-up:
【Green Intelligence】The Black Blood People have planted two spies among the Night Outcasts.
Their identities are Eugene and Carson.
These two use ravens to transmit messages. Please make good use of them.
With this conclusive evidence, Arthur finally felt reassured.
He began to ponder how to explain all this to Varana in a way that would make her completely trust his judgment.
He got up and poured the Beastkin some more wine.
She asked with a smile, "Are you trying to get me drunk?
"And then do something to me?"
"Why would you think that?"
The Beastkin tapped the wine glass, signaling Arthur to keep pouring.
"You keep pouring me wine," she said, "but you drink very little yourself."
Arthur smiled, "That's because we have alcohol restrictions here.
"Everyone is only allowed one drink per day."
Varana couldn't imagine such a rule.
For them, the Beastkin who had long wandered outside, the most readily available comfort was alcohol.
So, both men and women of the tribe drank.
Getting drunk was rare, as their powerful bodies had much higher resistance to alcohol than ordinary people.
This made them even more reckless.
Alcoholism was common.
Varana was certain that if they were only allowed one drink a day, it would definitely cause a rebellion.
She wasn't sure how Arthur managed to make everyone in Mist Town adhere to this, but she greatly admired it.
However, how long could such a rule last?
She wasn't optimistic.
But after receiving Arthur's answer, she was still a little disappointed.
She genuinely wanted to bear a child with this man.
Not only because of his excellent appearance but also because of his bloodline.
"Did he communicate with you?" Arthur asked.
The Beastkin collected her thoughts and replied, "Yes, in a dream."
"Can you tell me about it?"
Varana nodded, "Mostly things you already know.
"Like how he was trapped and how you rescued him.
"He gave us new instructions, telling us to assist you.
"To recuperate and prepare for the next hunt."
Arthur thought for a moment and said, "Did he say when he would awaken?"
Varana shook her head.
"Alright, it seems we can only wait."
"He is guarding this land in his own way.
"We can feel the energy shrouding the land.
"It can resist the invasion of evil things.
"But I can feel that this energy is not strong."
"Yes," Arthur agreed with her, "It can't resist beings like Marcus.
"If those powerful vampires want to come in, they can force their way in.
"It just won't be pleasant to stay here."
Varana speculated, "I think he wants us to find his companions.
"That is the true purpose of the hunt."
"Companions?" Arthur mumbled, trying to recall relevant information in his mind.
"Don't you know? There were once three gods like him living on this land."
"Kamelien, Wind of the Sky." Arthur interjected.
Kamelien was also a subordinate deity of Mother Earth, often appearing as a unicorn.
As for the Wind of the Sky, Arthur didn't know much.
He had only seen fragmented information in ancient local documents.
It could be inferred that he was a giant eagle.
These three deities were the faith of the indigenous people of Qingfeng Valley, spread there by a group of Shanteya druids.
Rage Claw had not told Arthur the whereabouts of the other two demigods.
"Are you sure these two deities are still in Qingfeng Valley?" Arthur asked.
The Beastkin shook her head, "They disappeared a long time ago.
"After Marcus conquered this place, Kamelien was the first to disappear.
"Then came the Wind of the Sky, and only Rage Claw continued to resist."
"I can only wish you good luck," Arthur said.
Varana shrugged, "That's just my guess.
"I'm not sure what he wants us to hunt either."
"Maybe traitors."
Arthur's abrupt words made Varana's hand, which was holding the wine, stop.
"We've already discussed this," the Beastkin's tone grew cold, "You don't need to keep reminding me."
"Do you trust me, Varana?" Arthur asked.
"Of course."
"Then I can give you two names."
The Beastkin withdrew her hand, "Speak."
"Eugene and Carson."
The Beastkin's expression darkened.
After a long while, she finally responded, "That's no small accusation.
"Especially since it involves one of our elders."
"They communicate with the Black Blood People using ravens.
"Perhaps we can use this."
"How can we use it?" Varana asked.
She seemed to have accepted the fact that these two were traitors.
This saved Arthur a lot of explanation.
"Tell them that I will increase the convoy's guards.
"They will warn their masters, and that way, you can catch them red-handed."
"That's a good idea," Varana acknowledged.
Arthur continued, "Also, tell them that I will also be in the convoy.
"The Black Blood People consider me a thorn in their side.
"They will never miss such a good opportunity.
"They will come out in full force, and Rage Claw might even come."
"But last time, they—"
At this point, Varana suddenly understood something.
"Last time someone tipped them off, but Rage Claw wasn't willing to miss the opportunity.
"So he sent those newborns to test the waters."
"Exactly, that's it," Arthur said, "But this time, we'll send them a lie."
"Will he take the bait?" Varana asked, "Rage Claw is not someone swayed by emotions.
"He's better at that than any of us Beastkin."
Arthur laughed, "Don't worry, the only reason those guys haven't left yet is because of me."
