124: Werewolf's Invitation
Chapter 123 The Werewolf's Invitation
Old Joe found Arthur while checking the third guiding point.
After he explained his purpose, Arthur pondered for a moment and decided to meet the three outsiders.
For young Baron Arthur to shoot an arrow and hit the bullseye a hundred meters away, he would find it quite difficult.
But when it came to social interaction and conversation, it was merely commonplace for him.
This handsome man from Amn, a favorite at court banquets, was not only skilled in musical instruments but also excelled at singing and sweet nothings.
In addition to these widely known titles, Arthur now also held the identity of a Mother Earth Priest.
The events in Wolf Den City, and the magnificent feat of dispelling the Night Mist, further enhanced his reputation.
So, when he took a seat at the empty spot at that table, the leading short-haired lady couldn't help but whistle.
Her gaze swept over the young Baron, and she said with a smile, "I originally thought I'd be meeting a pot-bellied old man."
Arthur was also discreetly observing the three of them.
The short-haired woman sitting opposite him was quite young, appearing only a few years older than him.
The man standing on his left was the oldest of the three, and the most robust, presumably the bodyguard for the other two.
Ever since Arthur sat down, he hadn't said a word, merely leaning against a pillar and trimming his nails with a sharp dagger.
Arthur noticed that his hands were covered in calluses, which should be marks left by years of using weapons.
As for the other man, he was dressed very strangely.
He wore a long robe, with many small cloth bags hanging from his waist.
A faint scent of spices wafted from the bags.
Arthur knew in his heart that it wasn't seasoning for cooking, but rather something used for certain rituals.
"Does my appearance disappoint you?" Arthur asked.
The short-haired woman chuckled, "No, not at all."
She continued, "Who doesn't like a handsome man?
"My name is Mirabel. I really didn't expect this current Baron of Qingfeng Valley to be so brave, daring to enter Qingfeng Valley with only three attendants."
Arthur sighed, "I'm already starting to regret it now.
"Look around. When I first came in, I thought I had arrived in some desolate borderland.
"Mother Earth above, this truly gave me a fright."
Arthur's exaggerated expression made the short-haired woman's smile grow wider.
She said with a smile, "You don't have to pretend to be like those noble scions.
"We've heard about your deeds.
"Don't worry, we're not here with any ill intentions, it's just—"
Just as she was about to continue, the strangely dressed man suddenly interrupted, "Our leader wants to talk to you.
"Mirabel, stop playing these games. You know the leader is waiting for our report.
"It's getting late. We need to hurry and leave. It's not safe at night."
Mirabel frowned slightly, a hint of displeasure flashing across her face.
But she quickly put on a smile again and said to Arthur, "Alright, Baron, let's talk—"
Arthur raised his hand to interrupt her, looking at the interrupting man and asking, "Excuse me, I don't know who you are yet."
Then, he pointed to the other man, "And who is he? It's hard for me to continue talking with you before knowing your identities."
"Are you always so suspicious?"
Mirabel leaned back, her eyes sharpening.
"That depends on who I'm talking to, where I'm talking, and what I'm talking about," Arthur replied.
The woman answered, "We are subordinates of Duke Wild Dog. Of course, you can also call us the Night Outcasts."
Arthur watched her impassively. He couldn't see any panic on her face, nor on the other two.
Either these three were extremely confident in their abilities, daring to so openly admit that they were with the werewolf who killed the Sheriff, or the werewolf who killed the Sheriff was not a Night Outcast at all.
"As for these two," the woman continued, "they are just my bodyguards. You don't need to worry."
"So what does this Duke Wild Dog want with me? Where does he want to meet me?" Arthur asked.
"We have a camp at Oak Lake. If you agree, we'll leave now," Mirabel said.
"You're not giving me much time to consider," Arthur said.
The strangely dressed man then interjected again, "It's getting dark, Baron, it's getting dark.
"Do you know what appears in this place when night falls?"
Arthur remained silent, waiting for him to provide an answer.
The man said vaguely, "Dark forces are roaming around Mist Town.
"Night is the time for beasts to hunt. You wouldn't want to travel at night."
Arthur gave a cold laugh and said, "Thank you for your advice, my friend.
"The beasts you speak of, are they the beastmen roaming in the forest?
"If so, aren't there three right in front of me?"
Upon hearing this, the three instantly revealed fierce expressions, and Flora, behind Arthur, clenched her fists.
Arthur, however, calmly continued, "Don't be nervous, guys.
"Acting here isn't a wise move.
"If your leader truly wants to meet, then show at least some sincerity, instead of sending subordinates to deliver a message and order me what to do.
"As you said, the sun is about to set. Do you still expect me to follow three beastmen out of town?"
Perhaps Arthur's words provoked the three of them.
The strangely dressed man sneered, "I've seen many self-important, foolish idiots like you.
"They all firmly believe they are chosen by destiny, capable of defeating evil and bringing light.
"But what's the result? Haha, you really should go look in the woods outside, young man, then you'll understand.
"I advise you to talk to our leader sooner. He'll give you some advice."
Facing the other party's provocation and threat, Arthur was unconcerned. He said, "Is that so? Then I invite him to be our guest here.
"We can sit and talk in the tavern, unless he's done something unspeakable and dares not come here."
"What are you implying?" The man suddenly stood up.
Almost at the same time, Flora also took a step forward.
Mirabel quickly waved her hand, signaling her bodyguard to retreat.
Though the man was full of confusion, he still complied.
After he stepped back, the short-haired woman spoke, "Listen to me, Baron.
"Our leader is a wise man. A conspiracy is brewing in Mist Town, and he has important clues."
"Then he should go to the Sheriff," Arthur said.
"You know how the locals feel about us."
"Then how do you know I will stop this conspiracy?" Arthur retorted.
Mirabel shook her head, "We are just messengers, here to deliver a message.
"We don't know the leader's specific thoughts.
"But what I can tell you is that since you entered Qingfeng Valley, our wolf pack has been watching you.
"The leader chose you, so naturally he has his reasons."
Mirabel reached out and gently stroked Arthur's hand, "Honestly, it would be a loss to the world to be without such a handsome man as you."
