216: Two ambushes
Chapter 213: Two Ambushes
The cultists' attacks were completely thwarted.
Jafar was directing the soldiers to pursue the fleeing cultists.
Another victory, the Commander thought.
But the foundation of this victory was inseparable from Godwin's meticulous arrangements.
The cultist scum, as expected, took the bait, falling into the ambush and being almost entirely slaughtered.
"Leave a few people behind, Commander," Godwin reminded Jafar. "We need to get the location of their camp from them."
"And the whereabouts of Ingabado."
The Commander summoned an orderly and whispered a few instructions.
At this moment, his feelings towards Godwin were particularly complex.
On one hand, he had to admit that this man was an undisputed talent.
Whether in internal affairs, commanding troops, or political maneuvering, he was top-notch.
The only pity was that such a comprehensive talent could not be used for himself.
In fact, Jafar would even be happy to hand over all the affairs of Lookout Fort to Godwin, as all the credit would ultimately fall on his own head anyway.
On the other hand, he was filled with apprehension towards Godwin.
The other party's prestige in Lookout Fort was growing daily; even people from the two churches were starting to lean towards him, which would undoubtedly shake the foundation of his rule.
"Lord Commander, you don't seem very happy," Godwin said.
Jafar returned his Bending Blade to its sheath, his gaze sweeping over the soldiers clearing the battlefield, and replied indifferently, "These cultists are already insignificant."
"Even if we catch a few people for interrogation, we may not get much more information."
"Just as they confessed before, they don't have a fixed camp; their purpose is to prevent us from having the opportunity to encircle them."
Although he heard the implied meaning in the Commander's words, Godwin's expression remained unchanged.
"Then don't you want to know who is secretly funding them?"
"What's the point of knowing?" Jafar shrugged. "Even if we really find the benefactors."
"They are definitely not characters we can deal with."
Godwin had long anticipated that the Commander would abandon the investigation.
Clearly, the Little Finger Merchant Guild's conversation with him was quite successful.
Or rather, this master of equilibrium at Lookout Fort only wanted to smooth things over from beginning to end.
He did not continue to argue, but in his heart, he was wondering if he should abandon the current Commander.
Jafar was indeed an easily manipulated leader, but this ease of manipulation applied to everyone.
If one day he could no longer be controlled by himself, he would become a threat.
"Alright, Godwin, I know you're unhappy," Jafar seemed to see through his thoughts and actively advised, "But some things are best left to rot in your stomach."
"The army of Lookout Fort will not continue to track these cultists."
"If you still want to investigate, you can only use your own people."
"Of course, My Lord," Godwin respectfully replied.
"Very good, you are useless to me now," he silently added in his heart.
Arthur sat in a delivery caravan, eyes closed in meditation, with Drax and Philip sitting opposite him in the carriage.
The Orc was vigilantly watching his surroundings, while Philip tightly gripped his weapon.
Philip was incredibly excited at this moment, able to participate in a battle concerning Qingfeng Valley, and furthermore, by the Lord's side.
He was already eager to try, not caring in the slightest that he was about to face a group of fierce Beastkin.
"My Lord, are our allies truly reliable?" Drax couldn't help but ask.
Arthur slowly opened his eyes, his gaze falling on the two guards: "With just our army, if we were to face these Beastkin, we would likely suffer heavy losses."
"Moreover, we must rely on these allies to send a message to the enemy—a message that can lure them into a trap."
"But even so, there's no need for you to personally act as bait," the Orc said.
"Since I intended to participate in this battle anyway, acting as bait is all the more suitable," Arthur replied calmly.
Things were going exactly as he had planned.
When Varana returned that night, she reported all the information to her father.
Duke Wild Dog immediately convened an elder council that night, requesting each elder to select two warriors to escort the Mist Town caravan;
At the same time, he specifically reminded them that this operation required extreme caution, as Arthur would also be accompanying the caravan to Lookout Fort.
During the meeting, the traitor Eugene recommended his subordinate Carson to Duke Wild Dog.
The next morning, Eugene, who was sending messages via raven, was caught red-handed by Duke Wild Dog.
Although everyone still hadn't figured out how Eugene used ravens to transmit information, everything matched Arthur's predictions exactly.
As an elder, Eugene naturally refused to confess.
His subordinate, Carson, was not so unyielding.
Under the two-ring spell, "Domain of Truth," cast by Arthur, Carson revealed everything he knew.
Ultimately, the two traitors and their accomplices were all imprisoned, and the bait message had been successfully sent out.
Now, they just needed to wait for the prey to take the bait.
Xiao Lingdang hid in a tree using invisibility.
Her mission in this battle was to investigate the enemy's deployment and determine if Rage Claw, the leader of the Black Blood People, had arrived.
Although she had no idea what the werewolf named Rage Claw looked like.
But Varana told her that as long as he appeared, she would recognize him at a glance.
As the caravan gradually approached, the Pixie heard subtle movements in the forest.
The sound was as light as a herd of deer walking through the woods.
But not long after, she saw a group of armed people emerge from behind the dense trees.
And the tall werewolf walking at the very front immediately caught her attention.
Varana was indeed right; Rage Claw was very easy to recognize.
He was the only one in the group who consistently maintained his Beastkin form.
His physique was tall and robust, and his gray fur made him look like a solid rock.
This group of Beastkin stopped not far from the old road, some hiding in waist-high bushes, others concealed behind tall trees.
Rage Claw blew a whistle, and two of his subordinates, armed with light crossbows, each climbed a large tree nearby. Xiao Lingdang was so scared she didn't even dare to breathe heavily, fearing she might alert the nearby Beastkin.
She cautiously flapped her wings, quietly moving to the other side to observe the enemy's movements more clearly.
"You're too impatient, Hal," a woman's voice said. "This could very well be a trap."
"Even from this far away, I can smell something isn't right."
Rage Claw sneered, suddenly reaching out and grabbing the woman's neck: "Shut up, woman!"
"Just do what you're supposed to do."
"Remember, you're alive because of those ravens."
"You have no say here; I make the decisions!"
"What a rude bastard," Xiao Lingdang cursed silently in her heart.
Rage Claw released his hand and waved, summoning his brother.
He was a burly man with a full beard; he squatted down, leaned close to Rage Claw, a cruel smile on his face.
"Is everything set up?" Rage Claw asked.
The burly man nodded: "The brothers are all ready; as soon as the caravan appears, we can act immediately."
"That damned Baron, leave him to me," Rage Claw said in a low voice.
