24: 24. Settlement of Accounts

“Dad, what’s this?”

Lu Feng walked over, picked up the document, and was about to read it when Lu Zezhou quickly took it back, laughing, “It’s nothing. Just some useless books and papers, don’t worry about it.”

Lu Feng didn’t believe him. Taking advantage of his inattention, he snatched it back again and looked closely. Sure enough, it was a “Critical Illness Insurance” policy.

Lu Feng checked the date; it was six years ago. He was surprised, never expecting his father to have such foresight, buying insurance six years prior.

But logically, this was critical illness insurance, and kidney failure would definitely be covered. So why had Lu Feng never heard his parents mention anything about a claim?

Lu Zezhou hesitated, but Lu Xiaoli couldn’t stand it anymore and said directly, “This matter concerns your second uncle. Back then, your cousin Lu Manwen had just graduated and started working in the insurance industry. Your second uncle went around asking people to help his daughter meet her sales targets. Your dad is soft-hearted, so he naturally bought a critical illness policy.”

Lu Feng thought back; his cousin Lu Manwen had indeed joined an insurance company at that time.

“We had completely forgotten about it, but then your dad was suddenly diagnosed with kidney failure. We were even glad we had bought critical illness insurance. After finding the contract and reading it, we discovered that kidney failure was indeed within the scope of coverage.”

Lu Feng asked doubtfully, “That’s great then, so why…”

As Lu Xiaoli spoke, her tone became more agitated: “The same day we went to Lu Manwen to apply for the claim, she initially said everything would be fine and that she would process it as quickly as possible. But the second time we asked, she gave us a cold notice, saying something about… the condition not meeting the major illness stipulated in the contract, and that no compensation would be given.”

Lu Feng clenched his fists, never expecting this behind-the-scenes story.

No wonder his second uncle’s family didn’t want to see him before, and Lu Manwen pretended not to see him today.

“But she swore back then that there would be no problem and that the claim would be fast. Now… she’s denying everything. She even had security guards kick us out,” Lu Xiaoli said, gasping for breath.

Lu Feng calmly said, “She’s the manager of the Xinghai City insurance branch now, isn’t she?”

“Exactly! That’s what makes me so angry. Back then, with just a word from her, your dad supported her sales targets with real money. She’s completely heartless.”

Lu Feng thought for a moment: “Dad, leave this to me. Even if they’re relatives, some debts need to be settled.”

Lu Zezhou looked at Lu Feng, suddenly realizing his son had truly grown up and could now shoulder the responsibilities of their family.

He nodded, relieved, “Okay, but they are relatives, so don’t… make it too ugly.”

Lu Feng calmly said, “That depends on whether she knows what’s good for her.”

...That night, Lu Feng fell asleep early. He was somewhat unsure if changing locations would affect his dream space.

It wasn’t until his body sank and countless dream bubbles appeared that he finally breathed a sigh of relief.

The white bubbles were still the most numerous, and the first ones to approach him were his parents’ dreams.

Lu Feng curiously looked at his mother’s dream. After seeing the scene inside the bubble, Lu Feng’s jaw dropped. It was his… wedding… One moment he was marrying a woman with a blurred face, and the next, he was holding a baby like a lotus root.

Lu Feng’s mouth twitched. It seemed like the same world, the same mother, but he was only just an adult, having just graduated from high school.

His father’s dream was much simpler, just recalling things that happened when Lu Feng was a child, like hiking and playing ball, very heartwarming.

Lu Feng smiled as he watched. These beautiful memories were precious to him, and he had to protect them.

Lu Feng looked around, silently thinking of Lu Manwen’s name in his mind.

A moment later, a white bubble was pulled towards him.

“It seems she’s in a great mood after her trip, still having sweet dreams of traveling?”

Lu Feng sneered, gently tapping the outside of Lu Manwen’s dream bubble with his finger. A change occurred; the white bubble in front of him began to vibrate. Then, a yellow ripple spread from the bottom, enveloping the entire bubble from bottom to top.

In the blink of an eye, the white dream turned into a yellow dream.

The original scene of a beach and seagulls inside the bubble suddenly transformed into an office. Lu Manwen was sitting on a man’s lap, pouting, “Brother Shen, like this, are you really not afraid your wife will find out? I’m worried she might come over and hit me one day if she knows.”

The middle-aged man named Shen Nanyu scoffed, “What does that old hag know? In front of me, she’s just a dog. Even if she finds out, so what? Does she dare to cause trouble? Heh… I’ll go back and divorce her, and let her wander the streets.”

“That’s great then. Once Brother Shen kicks her out, I’ll serve you. I’m not like that old woman; I’m very obedient.” Lu Manwen showed a fawning smile, constantly rubbing against Shen Nanyu.

Shen Nanyu pinched her chin, his eyes burning with desire.

“You little kitten are really clingy. Let me tame you.”

“Don’t be so eager, Brother Shen, this is the office…” Lu Manwen said coyly.

This behavior made Shen Nanyu even more heated. He chuckled, “The office is even better! Look how big it is, and the soundproofing is great. I’ll be promoted in a few days, and this position will be yours.”

Lu Manwen grinned from ear to ear, immediately squatting down: “Brother Shen, I really love you so much.”

Lu Feng didn’t bother to watch the rest of the scene, but he had managed to uncover some dirt on Lu Manwen. However, this wasn't enough. Lu Feng tapped the bubble again, and a blood-red light enveloped it, raising the dream level once more.

This act of forcibly changing the dream level would have a significant impact on the dream owner, but Lu Feng couldn't care less.

When the dream turned red, Lu Feng stepped forward, directly entering the dream… Morning.

Lu Manwen woke up from bed, feeling a splitting headache. It took her a while to feel slightly better.

“I didn’t drink last night, so why do I feel like I have a hangover? Or was it because of the air conditioning?”

She didn’t think much of it, got up to wash, and came to the living room, where her parents had already prepared breakfast.

“What’s wrong, Manwen? You don’t look so good?” Lu Manwen’s mother quickly came over to ask.

Lu Manwen shook her head and said, “I’m fine, Mom and Dad. I won’t eat breakfast. I have things to do at the company. I’m leaving now.”

Her father, Lu Dahai, smiled and said, “Drink your soy milk before you go.”

Lu Manwen casually picked up a bowl of soy milk and drank it. As she put the bowl down, as if remembering something, she said, “Oh, by the way, I saw my cousin Lu Feng come back yesterday evening. Uncle went to pick him up.”

“Hmm, I know. Has he been bothering you about the insurance recently?” Lu Dahai showed no expression, as if talking about a stranger.

Lu Manwen: “No, I’ve already explained to him many times that it doesn’t meet the contract’s stipulations. Even if I’m the branch manager now, there’s nothing I can do.”

“Good. If he still bothers you about this, tell me, and I’ll go talk to him and make it clear. We can’t let his illness ruin my daughter’s career.”

“That’s right. My daughter worked so hard to get to where she is today. It’s all thanks to her own efforts, and we can’t let anything delay her. Lu Zezhou should be sensible.”

Lu Manwen nodded, turned, and left the house, driving her car towards the company.

Although Youguang Insurance Company wasn’t as well-known as some of the established brands in China’s insurance industry, it was still considered a pillar.

Lu Manwen walked into the small downtown office building in Xinghai City. She was already good-looking, and her simple, elegant attire attracted many people’s attention at the elevator.

Lu Manwen had long been immune to such gazes, even feeling a bit proud inside.

At the company, she poured herself a cup of coffee. As soon as she sat down leisurely, she heard her subordinate report, “Manager Lu, someone is here to see you.”

Lu Manwen frowned: “Who?”

“He said his name is Lu Feng.”

Lu Manwen rolled her eyes in annoyance. She had just seen him return yesterday, and today he was already eagerly seeking her out?

He was like a stubborn plaster that couldn’t be shaken off.

Lu Manwen and Lu Feng were several years apart and had never really spent much time together, let alone built any rapport. So, her expression was very cold: “Let him in.”

She planned to resolve this matter completely today.
